I watched Potato's video yesterday and decided today to try a Russia faith game. True Start Location, and Byzantium started within reach of like 4 capitals, swiped them, and then came crashing into me as soon as my Monumentality golden age started. I fought back and reclaimed the city they captured from me, but by the time the war was over the era had ended and all of my cities but 1 had been converted, so I'd basically lost access to Work Ethic and all of my production. I quit out and immediately saw this video had been posted. Time to go back to Mr. Potato's class, and this time I'll take notes.
I play every game with the max amount of religions enabled too (because I hate having to rush religion) but that also means every AI has a religion too, which can be annoying sometimes.
The lesson is NEVER play on True Start Location because there are too many European civs in not enough land.
There is no algorithm that blocks certain civs from spawning, so it's entirely possible for some civs to be wiped out immediately because they can't settle due to city proximity.
Byzantium likely had a huge advantage against them because they all had to compete for space.
Step N° 1 - Don't start near Byzantium.
Step N° 2 - Profit.
Step N° 3 - Class Dismissed.

I feel your pain. Playing on Deity, this is just going to happen sometimes. It's basically the only way I tend to lose, aside from overplaying my hand in a war or something. Even with flawless play, aggressive civs can destroy your game with how front-loaded they are. Babylon especially is my nemesis, there's basically nothing you can do if they upgrade their warriors to swordsmen and rush you early.
I love how much you’re not caring about Simon being at war for most of the game. I’m very vengeful about the AI that attack me the second time.

Potato: Kilwa is super powerful, especially when you can gain suzerainty of multiple city states of the same type, so we definitely want suzerainty of Nan Madol and Kumasi.
/points with cursor at Nan Madol and Kumasi, has three envoys to spare and only needs to put one into Kumasi, but does nothing
And kumasi is straight broken in game where you have merchants, too much culture

Potato, most of the Great Merchants only apply to *international* trade routes sent to your city. The only one that improves the gold on internal routes is Raja Todo Mal (I think that's the name) and he doesn't appear until the Renaissance era or so.

Raja Todo Mal sounds great in Spanish: Raja (king) All Evil. Un related, but raja as a native word means a crack.
On stats and diminishing returns; when your stat is low, a flat increase is usually better. (Ex: Urban Planning.) When your stat is high, a percentage increase is usually better. (Ex: any of the 50% cards.) Its not so much diminishing returns as it is just which operator (addition or multiplication) will give you a better return. Early game Urban Planning +1 Production is like 20-30% in every city, which is absolutely amazing. Late game that 50% card can be anywhere from 20 to 30 flat per city.
Russia is one of the few civs that I will pick Magnus as my first governor so I can get the provisions promotion in time to sync with a classical golden age and pump out an ungodly number of settlers through monumentality

I find preserves are very useful in a tundra Russia game. The food just makes you grow so much faster than just gurdrawas and internal trading. It is a bit of an investment, but a single preserve can be shared by multiple cities. And once you have the buildings down and forests planted you can place national parks and have insanely good workable tiles that are providing tourism as well.
I always forget that preserves can be used by anyone except the epic bull moose, but this seems like it would work quite well
The problem with preserves in tundra/snow is that many tiles around just doesn't quite have enough appeal, but I guess if one were to plan around preserves foremost perhaps it would be possible to make it work? But it seems like a lot of effort without an easy return.
@@irispettson toundra have a lot of forest, you can often find a few good one. And when the time comes to plant forest, it become crazy
I've tried this build, not with Yosemite, but Ubsunur Hollow (3 faith, 3 production as soon as you settle on 4 tiles!) And it is insane. I'm far outpacing a wider Khmer my next door neighbor.
And it snowballs into EVERYTHING.

While the map settings and preferred win condition do matter, I think Kilwa is an S tier wonder in most circumstances. The empire-wide 15% bonus yield is such a huge buff, and then there's even free envoys. I'm shocked it hasn't been nerfed.

Nizhny-Novgorod has a lot of potential, since you have Machu Pichu. It adds +1 adjacency bonus to commercial hubs, theatre squares, and industrial zones next to mountains.
You can get a +5 hub, or a +4 zone(with an aqueduct built across the river) in Nizhny-Novgorod, if you wanted to... 😀
On my game I'm playing right now, I just got a plus 7 commercial hub thanks to Machu Pickachu.

Just finished watching the first episode! this series is tempting me to jump into my own Russia game...
I recommend you wouldn't. When I started and got an amazing starting location, I had all my citizens and infrastructure eradicated by natural disasters right before I could finish my settler TWICE in one day.
@@Imperial_stroopwafel That's just really shitty luck, it has NOTHING to do with Russia itself! It may also be affected by game modes or settings that you tweaked(or didn't tweak; I always turn down disaster intensity to at least 1)!

This is so weird, I havent played civ in months and decided to pick it up again yesterday. First game in, on random and I get Russia in what looks like an almost identical start to this. Yosemite within 3 tiles of the capital surrounded by tundra... got a 3 big city start with pretty much half a continent to myself.
Unfortunately my game dragged all the way to atomic because I'm really bad at the game and I quit as soon as GDRs got involved.
Then I come on TH-cam and you're playing the exact same scenario, at least I can see where I went wrong.
Did a Peter build in 'Better lakes mod' with the whole world as tundra. Got to a point where I got 1060 faith per turn. Absolutly crushed the (deity) AI with misionary spam.
Just by watching this I realized how powerful Russia can be, I'd never realized before. Also trying it myself and after having played Teddy (Bull Moose) and Pachacuti, I realized how powerful the Preserve district can be. I've always ignored it before
Not buying galley from barb clan made a hole in my brain
I got a sub 200 deity culture victory off mostly walls as Gaul. Man-at-arms rush for early conquest of neighbors. You have a lot of early cities and you get a lot of culture as Gaul if you make lots of units and mines. Build Renaissance walls ASAP and you can put up huge tourism numbers during a part of the game where no one really has any tourism.

I am so pissed that Potato got suzerainty of Kumasi because he literally fell backwards into that. He finished Kilwa and gets 3 envoys. Then he literally says at 21:22 that "I think our big goal this game will be to get control of nan madol and kumasi" (you can literally see the 3 envoys in the screenshot). Then at 25:37 he finished the commercial hub quest and is surprised that he randomly got suzerainty. Bruh.
After the first video I also did faith based Russia. First start was terrible. The second was golden, half half a continent to myself and two wonders (even if I had no tundra wonders), and thanks to keeping secret societies on I had crazy science and culture (also great head spam)

I have not looked into it, so I do not know the impact of points in science as it equates to research speed, but the differences between 10 to 20 vs 200 to 210, is not diminishing return. Because, as I understand it (and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong), 10 science has a static effect. If we equate the points in science to raw percentage increase, you are still gaining a 10% increase in speed, and it is just that going from 200% to 210% is not as impactful to the player as it is to go from 10% to 20%. 2.5% increase in total speed vs 100%. Diminshing return would be if that +10 from 200 to 210 actually gave you a lesser percentage increase in research speed than it would otherwise. In other words, that 10 points actually only gave you a speed boost equal to 5 points (or less). If the 10 does not give you what 10 should give you, because of some cut off point within the value of science points, then that is diminishing return.

it seems like you undervalue preserves and great zimbabwe. Great Zimbabwe can grant like 400-600 gold per turn if you build wide and have a single good Zimbabwe city
Potato, please-please, *USE PRESERVES* You are missing out! Preserves are excellent to make non workable landscapes profitable. Holy sites/Lavra also increase appeal you can combine that preserves to reap the benefits. Your Desert Canad game would have gone so much differently if you would have made use of Preserves. A Breathtaking tundra forest with just a Grove is 3 Food, 2 Prod. 2 Faith (3 if you are Russia), and 2 culture. And Preserve effects *STACK* You can have 2 Preserves boosting each other and have 2 tiles with +4 Food, +4 faith and +4 culture above its base yields. You can b stack preserves with Petra tiles on flat desert tiles an Oasis tiles since those cannot be improved anyways, you can stack them with Nazca lines too.
It is of course not the most efficient an have double or triple preserves that can turn barren snow landscapes into very livable productive lands. You have been making all the "GIGA YIELD" screenshots and almost never used stacked preserves. Try a tundra with Preserves and St. Basil's and see what you get.
I bought Civ6 Anthology yesterday and it has me confused.
Does New Frontier Pass actually give you anything by itself (like base game improvements or something, like Rise&Fall/Gathering Storm before)? Because the 2K infidigging launcher says I'm missing New Frontier Pass, BUT steam says I actually already have all the actual DLCs of New Frontier Pass (included in the Anthology) so there's no point in buying that on top just to get one checkbox flipped in the launcher

How do you have 51 science without building a single Campus district?
12 Cities with decent population (each population unit is 0.7 science), plus nice wonder/science tiles will do that.
I played a deity game with Russia since I watched this video and the international trade ability is just OP. I was able to get 250 science late game with only trade routes and city-state abilities without a single campus.

Different game rules. You have basic version (1%), whereas Potato has Gathering Storm (Holy Sites provide Production equal to their Faith adjacency bonus.).
You never asked but I know there were such discussions: in Nóvgorod the first syllable is stressed (Но́вгород). Same story with Ástrakhan (А́страхань) and Túla (Ту́ла). There is no rules for pronounciation, just tradition. Usually a second or third syllable is stressed (like in Olonets)
Though you did pronounced Nizhniy Novgorod (Нижний Новгород) quite well, Kazán (Каза́нь) and Yaroslávl (Яросла́вль) are nearly perfect with soft ending (marked by “ь” sign). Arkhangelsk (Арха́нгельск) literally sounds like russian “arch-ángels” (city) but with “kh” and the suffix “sk”.

This Russia build is what made me open the game and start playing the build myself just to experience this. Absolutely broken build gotta say, I was able to get an income of almost 400 faith per turn in mid game that is with the 100% Holy Site adjacency bonus card plugged in. My play is not perfect but I got the idea down 😅

My first deity victory was as Harald in an archnipel map
Just spam ship as soon as possible, kill one or two neighbor, raid everything for infinite science/golds, flood the world
