Why Did R2-D2 NEVER Tell Luke Skywalker The Truth? 😳

- Why did R2-D2 NEVER tell Luke Skywalker the Truth about Darth Vader being his father or that Obi Wan wasn’t quite giving Luke all the details either?
Cuz we see at the end of Revenge of the Sith that C-3PO’s memory is wiped but not R2’s!
So he could have spilled the beans when Obi Wan gave Anakin’s lightsaber to Luke or anytime after that!
But there are actually 2 answers to this question.
And the first is R2 not really knowing that Anakin transformed into Darth Vader.
See, all R2 witnesses near the end of Revenge of the Sith are Obi Wan and Anakin fighting on Mustafar but only see’s Kenobi return without him.
At this point, R2 probably thought Obi Wan killed Anakin and wasn’t able to connect the dots with Vader later on.
But the second answer actually makes more sense but it’s in the now Legends book The Swarm War.
And in the book it tells us that R2 was programmed to not share ANY information to Luke and Leia about their parents to protect them! - บันเทิง
Bro was no snitch.
R2 & Vader are literally my fav characters
It cuz artoo is an asshole.
@@Tenebrous227 What about me?
So true
better question why did obi wan say dont remember ever owning a droid
he saved you life a couple of times you old ingrate!!!!!!!!
Being programmed to never say something sounds kinda awful, like imagine R2 seeing Luke and Leia kiss but being able to say nothing about despite wanting to
😂
Did R2 watch them be born🤔
@@suyz9312No
@@suyz9312 he watched it iirc.
@@suyz9312yes. He’s there at the end of Revenge of the Sith with Yoda and Obi-Wan
For me… it’s technically both
he wanted to protect them… but in the end he didn’t knew who is R2 protecting the children from… his old friend
As once chancellor sheev palpatine said.. "it's ironic".....:-)
and his best friend
@@srinivasaraokotteda1668*how ironic
If ur gonna quote something, quote it right
@@Influxwafer it's a joke man
He was a mechanic, not a family therapist.
im a mechanic not a doctor dammit
whoa crossover
Luke: "What....happened to my father?"
R2: "Some stories, my boy, are better left untold."
I think the first one makes the most sense. R2 wasn't there when Anakin was dubbed Vader by Palpatine. He was gone by the time Palpatine recovered what was left of Anakin.
That makes a hell of a lot more sense than what was in the video, and I'm not trying to insult the creator in any way as he is just going by the movies and the lore. R2 and C3PO just weren't around every minute and moment of Anakin's life, especially when he became Vader.
the being programmed to not say anything makes more sense actually, since he is a droid and has a line of code to follow
R2 not being able to say anything watching Luke and Leia kiss: 💀🗿
Wtf aren’t they siblings?
@@dr.hannibal8338 they didn't know at the time,so throughout the movie they believed they were friends
Skull Easter Island Head?
Poor R2 thought his master was dead
Also I think it's almost explicitly clear that they only let R2 keep his memory because he knows how to keep a secret
In Return Of The Jedi, Luke actually says to R2 “I can’t do it R2. I can’t kill my own father.”
There’s a third answer that makes even MORE sense:
The original trilogy was done before the prequel trilogy had ever been written. Anakin’s back story had been put to paper, sure, but there was no script and no details ever really fleshed out until the late 90’s. George Lucas through in R2-D2 and C-3PO in order to connect both trilogies and he simply didn’t do a very good job in filling many plot-line holes. He just made them, and figured any inconsistencies would either be overlooked, or fans would come up with their own ideas to explain anything that didn’t make sense.
If you want to discredit George Lucas, that would work. But why anyone would want to do that, I have no idea.
@@occam7382 fair enough. But I remember when the prequels released. I was very disappointed in the inconsistencies, because I have always loved the original trilogy, so much.
@@brichan1851, I mean, I don't recall any inconsistencies, or at least any that couldn't be explained, but okay.
@@occam7382 watch *Return of the Jedi* and focus on Luke’s conversation with Leia when they are at the Ewok village. They talk about their mother. Leia remembers her. Not Luke. He then confesses that Vader is his father and Leia is his sister.
Next, watch *Revenge of the Sith* and see how those events play out during Luke and Leia’s birth. Padme dies immediately after Luke and Leia are born. Leia would not have any memory of her mother (her “real mother,” as Luke puts it) due to her death when the twins are born.
That is just one example. There are others.
@@brichan1851I _might_ fact check this, but The Force tells me you're correct.
Artoo wasn’t a talker, and never offered up anything except that which was relevant at the time.
Chewbacca, Yoda, Obi Wan and R2D2 were co-conspirators against Luke.
Option 3 the plot for the prequels wasn’t made yet, so R2 had no reason to know.
Option 4 R2 kept trying to tell him but he doesn’t speak droid so he doesn’t realize beep beep boop beep means “the dark cyborg who makes deadpool look pretty when they aren’t wearing their suits is your dad.” Maybe R2 wouldn’t say it quite like that, but I imagine if he did know what vader did, he’d be a bit upset at him.
Simplest reason: my man ain't no snitch
He turned into Vader before Obi-wan roasted him.
But R2 wouldn’t understand that. It was an internal change in Anakin. He didn’t witness the conversion to Vader nor did anyone call him Vader in his presence
Thing is R2 knew that anakin fell to the darkside, he didnt know the complete details but he knew regardless, now did he know that vader is anakin, maybe, after all he did know anakin and obi wan very well, well enough that R2 can somewhat predict what they would do and i think thats exactly what he did, he knew that obi wan couldn't kill anakin but he didnt know what happened to him.
Long story short, R2 knew that anakin was alive but didn't know in what condition he would be in, then meets vader or sees vader and makes his own decision on who the dark lord is
R2’s memory was wiped, but Anakin put a back up system in R2, so if the CIS captured R2 again R2 can wipe his own memory. Luke found out everything about his father when he was tinkering R2 and accidentally started the memory backup system.
No it was just C-3PO’s memory that I was wiped not R2’s
This was what i assumed as R2 was intelligent & loyal
💀☠️😱holy shit
SAVE AND PROTECT✨️💫💪
I like the idea that he didn’t say anything solely because it would be really funny
Basically R2 knew how to keep his mouth shut
R2 knew and was probably told not to tell them. Maybe he was waiting for the right time or just figured obi wan and yoda would tell him eventually. I like to think if they both failed to tell Luke that R2 would eventually especially if everyone who told him not to was gone then the orders would be moot.
R2: "And she was a good friend."
R2 knew that Luke had to live out his Destiny. It was not his place to disrupt that process. Smart droid!
Unlike chopper, R2-D2 is not a snitch 😂
Because obi wan thought he wasnt ready
I personally would’ve went with the fact that Anakin and probably Padme as well had given R2-D2 a top-tier absolute order to not reveal their relationship. He was at their wedding. He was literally a gift from her to him when he gave C-3PO to her.
So obviously, you wouldn’t want him to casually drop to some other droid that they were married because it was a forbidden relationship.
He knew the assignment
R2 aint no snitch hes a ride or die
I programmed him to not do that
He was trolling everyone the whole time
C-3PO definitely needed his memories erased lol
Or option 3: He was a sassy droid and has his own plans to take over the Galaxy...
I think the first reason is more plausible tbh
It’s a droid , droids don’t think and like wonder about things
I think we can all agree that r2 is just built different
Because with R2-D2, what happens on Tatooine stays on Tatooine!
R2 ain't no snitch
I really want a book from R2's perspective across the whole series.
R2 d2 did know it just huanted him that's why
If R2 were a dog instead of a droid, he would've known.
That is why r2=bestie
He's a rolling HAL
I was under the impression that droids had their memories wiped every few years to prevent them from gaining true sentience…as illustrated in the Han Solo movie.
He never snitched even when luke and leia kissed 💀
Bro is the only one we can trust
It makes perfect sense that R2 wouldn't know that Vader was Anakin.
It was literally in the 3rd movie that politician at the end lea's adopted father he said to wipe both their memories
Oh my this is some story! 😮😅
No matter the film..and a couple of the shows. R2 has been there and seen it all. It wasn’t till he powered down and was covered with a tarp, but he was still there. He is the constant in the timeline.
Thank you!
I hate how many fans just pretend there's a bunch of plot holes in just the OT or between the PT and OT.
They seem to use a lot of surface level and audience perspective info to make up plot holes. (Or regurgitate what some anti Star Wars Tuber told them)
That’s weird. I pretty much thought the same thing.
So all this time R2 could've gave the rebels of some location of abandoned Clone bases.
Okay, I didn't know that C-3P0 had his memory wiped after Return of the Sith
Bail Organa orders it to be done on-screen, shortly after Padme's death. I think R2 laughs about it
If Tarken figured out who Darth Vader was and Thrawn figured it out then R2 figured it out
the actual reason is that this is just a trivial fantasy film from 1977 that grew in profit over time leaving many aspects open-ended and disconnected as the franchise grew
🤚 I know why!!
Cause it wasn't in the script & back in 77 Star Wars Darth Vader & Leia were not family. That was written in in Empire.
R2 being a robot isn't force sensitive. Vader would have to go "R2!" up seeing him and he'd probably do that all weapons out thing from Revenge of the Sith, still not recognizing him.
Anakin told R2 and stay with the ship, and never returned. and before that, he mentioned to 3PO, that Anakin had stopped talking to him.
R2 was always included in secret plans and never spilled the beans! Ask the people on Jabba’s Sailbarge
Because he didn't know!
....maybe he just didn't want to
I thought senator organa ordered the Droids memories wiped at the end of revenge of the sith
Didn’t the “droids” memory’s get wiped in one of the prequel trilogy films by order of senator organa?
I always thought it was because it wasn't written in the script. Silly me.
He didn't feel like it
He did...... It was just a bunch of beeps and clicks... Nobody understood they just repeated what they thought he said
"Now legends."
You mean true Star Wars?
But how does Darth Vader not remember 3PO & R2?
Vader also almost killed R2D2 during battle of Yavin.
Then there's three. Luke didn't know how to
The Jawas Could Have Erased Sum
Of R2D2's Info When He Was Blasted!
I thought R2 did have his memory wiped. Guess not.
The real answer is that by the time Lucas got around to doing the prequels, he simply forgot to watch the original Star Wars movie, hence all the inconsistencies; and, he didn't have anyone around him strong enough to point out the flaws in Phantom Menace.
While I don't believe R2 was wiped, 3PO having his mind wiped demonstrates that it happens. There is then a 19 year gap between when we see R2 and when we see him again. the easiest answer is that some time in that 19 years, he does get his memory wiped. I'm more inclined to believe R2 is highly trusted, but the other possibility is perfectly reasonable.
I honestly think even after everything that happened, r2 was still loyal to anakin
Why was leia 4 years older that luke in new hope, but they were twins in revenge of the sith?
They had there memories wiped at the end of Revenge of the Sith.
The first answer is George had no clue and R2 sells toys so let’s put him in the first trilogy as a main character to make money
Why wasn't R2-D2 and Chewbacca given subtitles?
Anyone else getting game theory vibes from this video?
If he could talk, I can imagine him being voiced by a female
R2 being Cleveland in the Family Guy special made a lot of sense to me. That's how I imagine him speaking if he could speak basic.
@@occam7382 that’s good
Or the third and most likely reason is he ain’t no snitch, he knows snitch’s get stitches 😂
Because when George Lucas wrote the original trilogy, he didn't decide to make a story taking place over a period of 50 years in a galaxy with millions of star systems and quadrillions of beings revolve around a dozen characters.
Luke - R2 can I ask you a question
R2 - Sure Luke what is it
Luke- were you part of the clone wars
R2 - Yes I was Luke I was in the Clone Wars
Luke- ok so if you were in the Clone wars did you know my dad
R2 - uh Luke maybe you should go back to fixing your X wing
Luke- No r2 come on just tell me
R2 - no Luke ok it’s something you should not be hearing ok
Luke - Why R2
R2 -Because Luke i just can’t ok
it was in the script or in this case wasn't
Not completely true I’m not sure if it was legends or canon, but our two actually ends up showing Luke a lot of the Jedi Temple hologram recordings of his father killing the younglings
See how simple that was 1 line of exposition filling potentials plot holes Star Wars Disney can’t write for shit so sad I’m like ole boy on the Transformers dark side “entertain Me”
I figured the reason r2-d2’s memory wasn’t wiped because, and the obvious reason no one can understand what that droid says💁🏻♂️🤔.
I don't care what Disney says, Legends lore isn't a legend, it's fact in the Star Wars universe. Everything Disney has done (especially The Acolyte) are just fan fics done by non-fans
Why did he have to AI generate a pic of R2?
Because it was written in the script that way
Or how about no one can understand R2
But according to G.Lucas " None of the books or videos games are cannon. I don't like Video games "
2nd one makes no sense at all, they had 3po's memory wiped but ignored r2 which is why he has the memory, if they were gonna do anything they'd wipe his memory too. also, they were never intended to meet luke or leia anyway so it's a bs excuse
They've done something similar multiple times like when he got captured by the CIS and had a bunch of republic intelligence on him because having that data on hand let him act in a more flexible capacity
Deep
Cus the two droids wasnt actually in the room when thr twins was born, so who would have told them when itd a secret???
Because… R2 can’t talk.
Does Luke actually ever speak directly with R2? We can see him communicating in the X-Wing, but then there's a display translating R2*s sounds. So it may just be Luke never would have understood R2.
He memories were wiped .. it was in the movies
Watch the scene again. Organa says to “have the protocol droid’s memory wiped.” R2 even laughs while C-3PO says “Oh no.”
R2 never had his memory wiped. Only C-3PO did.
Or my theory: R2-D2 is the most force sentient being in the galaxy and is secretly guiding the destiny of our heroes..
Jar Jar was to be his opposite. The evil force user manipulating those around him subtly while R2 secretly thwarts him after every turn! Bwuahahaha.
To prove my theory, Artoo is always around when something spectacular and good happens while Jar Jar is always around when something negative or odd happens.
Feel free to dispute me. :)
Remind me; When did R2 get exposed to this information? How does R2 know this? What if R2 simply didn't recognize Luke? I mean, he's just a robot and R2 would have no idea what he looked like or even where he was living. It's a big galaxy. Am I right?
The possibility also exists that R2 is just kind of an ass, and enjoys sitting in the background watching everyone trying to work out the shocking family secrets what he already knows
