Jimmy Chamberlain is a monster talent and often (sadly) left out of the conversation on top drummers. He’s one of my favorites, so smooth and inventive.
Kudos to whoever picked this track for polo. Beautiful, lush song that's indulgent and more obscure to a non-fan, without being inaccessible or hard to listen to for someone who isn't versed in the pumpkins
Every time I come in the comments to say Starla, there's someone else with a song that I also this is their best song 😕 What am I to do? Listen to Starla dude....Starla. Or maybe Drown. Porcelina for sure tho too. X.Y.U. ? Starla!
Porcelina is the absolute best song to listen to loud and in the dark, so you can get completely enveloped in the music! It's truly mystical ❤ and...excellent when they play it live!!!!
Siamese dream is an album you dont want to skip any of the songs coz they are amazing and fit well as an album. Just saw them on Wednesday and they still rock on hard
I am all in for your Pumpkins journey! Favorite band of all time. You can pick any song from their original run in the 90's and not go wrong. Their drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, is one of the all time greats and there are many tracks where he gets unleashed.
I forgot how good this song is. I haven't listened to Mellon collie in a long time. Smashing Pumpkins has always been one of my absolute favorites. The face-melting heavy distortion contrasted against Billy Corgan's childlike, almost bratty voice is just magical. Please react to Hummer of you can! They have so much great music.
Billy doesn't rate it. I think he's against it because he thinks fans only like it because it was co-written by James, who was out of the band for ages.
Smashing Pumpkins is timeless. Go through Gish, Pisces Iscariot, then Siamese Dream, to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Those albums (along with Radiohead) got me through my teen years. Billy might/may be a big drama queen, but he damn well knows how to write a song. Edit: If you like A Perfect Circle, James Iha joined that super group in the mid 2000's.

Drown, Mayonnaise, Rhinoceros, Cherub Rock, Hummer, Soma, my favorite tracks. The entire Siamese Dream is 🔥🔥 this track is great also. They do deserve their recognition
Siamese Dream is definitely my favorite Pumpkins album. It's an absolute joke they're not in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Songs like Soma show how they can mix beautiful riffs with hard rock in the same track perfectly.👌
The Smashing Pumpkins were invaluable to me during my teenage years. So many of their songs were integral during different parts of my life. YES, I think The Smashing Pumpkins deserve to be in the Rock and Roll HOF!!
Not only do they as a band deserve to be there but Billy Corgan deserves to be there based purely off of the number of hit singles that man has wrote for other artists It's a travesty they aren't in the hall already
@@wichitadisciple9874 To be honest, I think it comes down to personality, the hall of fame want their rock stars to be humble and so forth, they're maybe afraid billy would cause some kind of awkward spectacle because of bragging, complaining about fans or whatever
JimmyChamberlin (the drummer) was the Danny Carey of the 1990’s . I know Tool were around in the 90’s, but Jimmy was (arguably) the better drummer back then. It is SHOCKING that they aren’t in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! They created a whole new genre of music with their second album (Siamese Dream). It wasn’t grunge, like most alt rock/metal bands were back then. They brought back arena rock mixed with face melting riffs, insane drumming, layered vocals (kind of like how Queen layered their vocals). They had a sound that will never be copied. As soon as you hear a clip of a Pumlins song you KNOW it’s them. Their third album (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) was the highest selling double album of the 1990’s , and is consistently in the top 10 double albums of all time. They fused hard rock with metal, with grunge, with pop. They are Kind of genreless.
During Pumpkins mania in the 90s I vividly remember hating Billy Corgan's voice and once they won all those Grammys they got played to 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 on radio and Mtv, which didn't help. I dug the instrumentation a lot but him....ugh. Then about 10 years ago while on a road trip with my cousin he played their classic album " Siamese Dream " and I was blown away by how solidly crafted it was. "Cherub Rock", "Disarm" and "Mayonnaise" in particular slammed me with a wave of nostalgia. They all drove home memories of my youth in a crazy way. Billy's vocals no longer bothered me after that, in fact it really grew on me. Now I love both his tone and singing style. My wife and I have seen Smashing Pumpkins twice live in Australia and I bought four of their albums which continue to be on rotation: Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness are my favourites. Just so weird how that goes. And yeah, trust me I deeply regret missing them at their peak.
Smashing Pumpkins aren't my favorite band, but their Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is my absolute favorite album ever. Its just one of those classic albums that never gets old, I hope you listen to more!
This is Allan's daughter (the one that recommended this song) and we all hang out every night and watch your reactions. When we saw you were doing The Smashing Pumpkins 1979 we were stoked, and when we saw that you were reacting to Thru the Eyes of Ruby we freeeeaked. All of their albums are great but Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is by far their best. His youngest daughter is 14, I'm, 30 and my brother is 31 and he did us a favor by showing us Tool/The Pumpkins/A Perfect Circle etc when we were growing up. It's just on a whole other level as far as talent, meaning, the whole enchilada. As far as The Smashing Pumpkins goes, I would recommend Muzzle, Zero,Tonight Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. (Muzzle is probably the next best IMO) Keep doing what you do!!! Looking forward to your next tracks!
All good choices but Soma is the one that hits the spot for me. Not just for the song itself but it's position on the album coming right after Disarm gives you a little breathing room before doubling down on the feeling when the music kicks up. It's point and counterpoint for the song but counterpoint and point for the album.
Ruby, Porcelina, and Hummer are all great extended/ 6+ minute songs. I still have never listened to Mayonnaise, and I've forgotten how others like Soma, Geek USA go.
Such a polarizing band whose talent is undeniable. Their debut Gish got me through some really tough times in 92-93...they can melt your face, make you cry, and just take you on surreal journeys....so glad my favorite reactor is on the SP train.
I WAS AT THIS CONCERT. IWAS ON THE FLOOR 20 FEET FROM THE STAGE ..THE SHOW AMAZING!!!! COULDN'T HEAR FOE 2 DAYS AFTER THE SHOW ...IT WAS 3 HOURS OF THEM CONSTANTLY ROCKING , THEY WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF YOUR LIFE
"breathing underwater and living under glass" I love the way the guitars sound during this part. It goes with the lyrics so perfectly. Probably my one of my favourite Pumpkins songs ever.
Jimmy is an absolute beast on the drums. He's also the most humble, and gracious person in the band. I met the band in 1999, and Billy and James were both wonderful, but Jimmy really made an impression on me. I've been a big fan of Jimmy ever since. There is a method to Billy's singing voice. He used a nasal voice to create a juxtaposition between the soft and harsh sounds. It's perfection.
Just to let you know (a little off topic 😂) i just love the little spinning thing behind you, i watch it almost the entire time you react to a song. 😊fantastic
There is no question they should be in the rock n roll hall of fame. Billy’s massive catalog is behind prolific. They have influenced a whole generation of music.
BROOOO!!!!!!! I can't believe you're doing this song!!!! I saw them live in '96 for their Infinite Sadness tour (this album) and to be honest, I was was aware of this song but it wasn't one of my favorites. This song absolutely stole the show! It was so powerful! If you really like this I implore you to find a live version of this around '96, it's amazing! It's definitely one of my favorite Pumpkins songs after seeing it live. As you alluded to, their drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, is a monster. He is my all-time favorite drummer, and yeah I'm also a Tool fan, so that says a lot lol. You really made my day doing this song and I hope you really enjoyed it!
I’m an “album listener” by nature, but there’s a few albums in particular that stand out as needing to be heard in their entirety as a collective work of art. “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” is one of those albums, in my opinion.
The sequence between 708 and 721 is a stunning transition, gives me chills yo this day, and I bought this album the day it released... Best tune on the entire album IMHO
I have spent my whole life trying to replicate the sound of the distorted guitar sound (without layering) that comes in at 4:33....its been 24 years. lol
If had to describe this song in one word: epic. My favorite song on Mellon Collie, which is saying something because this album has some absolute bangers. Allan definitely did your right and his other suggestions are great. They should be (and will be) in the HOF. JImmy Camberlain is an excellent drummer. Look forward to more reactions to the Pumpkins. Another epic on Mellon Collie that is definitely worth your time is Porcelina of the Vast Oceans.
I'm glad you touched on the polarizing aspect of Billy's voice. They're a tough band to recommend because if you don't like his voice, then you're automatically out. BUT, if you love his voice, which many of us do, it's easy to fall head over heels in love with their music. Greatest band of all time for me. Daring to be different while backing it up with ludicrous chops and songwriting. I love this band.
GREAT song! I'm so happy that you're getting into the Pumpkins, one of my top 3 bands of all time! Cherub Rock was their first hit, it's the song that put them in the national spotlight. Please go down their rabbit hole, you won't regret it!
It's interesting because through The eyes of Ruby and 1979 are both great songs they are both very different from each other but also very different then a lot of the pumpkins catalog thur the eyes of Ruby is the cultured fan pick Though your guy is right this is one of my favorites also loved "body's" off this album
They definitely should be in the hall of fame. One of the biggest snubs in my opinion. The numbers of albums sold, the quality of drums, guitars and lyrics all point to a hall of fame resume.
Jimmy is just so god darned good at drumming. Jazz styled hard rock. Hits all the right beats and lifts the energy of every song without ever over-doing anything. Everything sounds so effortless.
That donation request letter at the beginning sounds just like what I would write. Crazy to see likeminded fans. Songs I would say are great -whirl -thirty-three -Starz -Geek USA -United States -Mayonnaise Also drummer Jimmy chamberlain is underrated AF and should be considered one of the goat 🐐 drummers.
Billy's lyrics and music got me thru that 17-20 yr old search for identity. It was nice to hear someone give Jimmy Chamberlain props on drums. Bold move playing Ruby Nice. ❤
Jimmy Chamberlain was always my favorite drummer in the midst of an astonishingly great class of drummers from the 90s. I just vibed with his feel like no other. The song Quiet is a pretty fun one with great drums that should catch your ear.
Agreed, kudos for picking this song. The Smashing Pumpkins are and have always been by far my favorite band ever since Gish first came out. I’ve seen them 8 times and can’t wait to see them again.
The drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is criminally underrated. Been one of my favorites for a long time. I love is work on the song "An ode to no one". Great video's bud!
Alan killed it on this request, a classic deep cut that is probably better than their known hits of the double EP. This song almost sounds like it was a cut off the Siamese Dream album (imo their best) , just the sound and feel feels like it could have come off the album.
first time viewer of your channel. i am at 1:13, paused the video to comment - you haven't started listening to it yet... but from a long time fan, you're in for a hell of a time. enjoy the ride - i'll see you on the other side.
“The Beginning is the End is the Beginning” was used in the Watchmen movie. Amazing pumpkins song too (among many others already mentioned in these comments).
Smashing Pumpkins should absolutely be in the hof. This album (Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) is a masterpiece Needs to be listened to from beginning to end. It's a story.
They're right. Mayonnaise may be my fave or top 3. But the album diameter dream is in my top 10 faves of all time and I have like 100 great album.faves
These albums are the type you need to listen to in their entirety. Melonchollie and the infinite madness was the first successful double album since Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to be released. Pumpkins are the modern day Zeppelin.
Love the pumpkins 🧡🎃and Billy’s voice is perfect for their vibe. Their songs are often for the weirdos those that don’t always fit in they sing of unrequited love, loneliness, and the raw emotions come through in Billy’s voice. Some favorites include: Soma, Hummer, Snail, 1979, Here Is No Why, Tonight Tonight.
"Bodies" would be an interesting track to react to next because you mentioned the hot and cold reactions to Billy's vocals. He can do so much with his voice from soft and sweet to harsh and raging, sometimes all of the above and several shades in between all in one line. "Bodies" has the whole mix and a bit of a twist to emphasize the existential dissonance at its core. It's another fun and complex song from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness disc 2 with pulsing guitar and incredible drumming as usual from Chamberlin.
This was the first concert I ever went to, when they were touring for this album. January 1997 in Bloomington, IN (go Hoosiers!) They set a high bar for every concert I went to afterward.
I saw SP 4 times in the early to mid-90s. They were the soundtrack to my college years. I remember so viscerally the first time I heard them- someone was playing the Gish cd while driving me around in their truck. And I was moved beyond belief- immediately.
"It's a softer voice or whatever..." Hehe. Now react to songs like 'Bodies', 'XYU' or 'Tales of a Scorched Earth'... He actually has a voice that can go from eerily soft through to face melting scream of the banshee and the band have excellent songs that take advantage of it all but the main reason some people don't like his voice is that it can sound quite nasal and that puts a lot of people from diving into the pure gold that is the Smashing Pumpkins song back catalogue.
This song came off Mellon Collie, which sold 10+ million copies. I can't imagine these songs without his voice. HOF? Yes, absolutely. But Billy so rubbed people the wrong way, I don't think they'll ever be inducted. And thank you for noticing the drums... Jimmy Chamberlain is probably the best rock drummer of all time. He seems to empathize with the guitars... But before you fall in love with them, check out the song "Beautiful," from the same album. I love it, it shows their range, but a lot people just stick to the face melting. Great channel. Kudos.
This is not a song you see a lot of people react to, but I think it's the perfect choice because it really encapsulates what Billy the the gang were trying to do at this point.. not being afraid to embrace their heavier roots, bombastic guitar solos, wall of sound guitars... Mellon Collie is all over the place, but this is one of the best songs they've ever done. Mayonaise next, please! (I met Billy once, I told him Mayonaise was my favorite song, he said thanks. And then my girlfriend proceeded to talk to him for several minutes about poetry or something.. it ended with Billy asking his security guy "Where's my slushie, motherfucker?!" Good times.)
❤❤❤ I’m so stoked for you! The Pumpkins have been my favorite band since the fist time I saw them in 1994. You can go down an amazing rabbit hole here, there’s so much interesting stuff. Check out Soma, Hummer, and Starla. The beautiful thing is that you’re going to get suggestions for 50 different songs, and all of them will have merit. Love the channel Polo!
HERE WE GO! I just left another long comment about how SP are my favorite band since 93' when I was 11 years old. If I had to pick my favorite songs it would literally be impossible. There's so many from each album. Ruby is one of their epics. Other epics in my opinion off the top of my head would be Hummer, Soma, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, and Glass and the Ghost Children(this one is not for everyone, it's weird but great). I haven't played this video yet but I'm really hoping you like it. Whoever recommended it is a damn hero. My second favorite band is Dream Theater and I saw on your channel you have a reaction for them too. Dream Theater is a supergroup of dudes that have degrees in music, there's very few people on the planet as talented as them. People's main complaint of Dream Theater is James LaBrie's voice, but you get used to it and it grows on you. Kind of like RUSH, Geddy Lee's voice is something to get used to. Actually, since I'm commenting on a Pumpkins video, a lot of people hate Billy's nasal voice but I actually prefer it to his "new" singing style. Sorry for these long comments man, just excited to see new Pumpkins fans being made!

Absolutely, one of my favorite albums
The sequence between 708 and 721 is a stunning transition, gives me chills yo this day, and I bought this album the day it released...
Best tune on the entire album IMHO
Beautiful
They need to be in the hall of fame.
I have spent my whole life trying to replicate the sound of the distorted guitar sound (without layering) that comes in at 4:33....its been 24 years. lol
„porcelina of the vast oceans“ will blow your mind 🙈
❤❤❤❤❤
This song and "Tonight, Tonight" are the some of the best. Also "In the arms of sleep" "Lilly", "Ava Adore" are amazing!
GEEK USA is a gem. The person at the intro is a late fan. There is no better rocking song from Smashing Pumpkins from their best album.
Very much agree with Mayonnaise. It has been one of my favorite songs since the 90's, and I've never gotten tired of it.
It's interesting because through The eyes of Ruby and 1979 are both great songs they are both very different from each other but also very different then a lot of the pumpkins catalog
thur the eyes of Ruby is the cultured fan pick
Though your guy is right this is one of my favorites also loved "body's" off this album
They definitely should be in the hall of fame. One of the biggest snubs in my opinion. The numbers of albums sold, the quality of drums, guitars and lyrics all point to a hall of fame resume.
If you were vibing to the end of Ruby, just wait til you hear Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
❤❤❤
Siamese Dream was the album of the decade ('90's) in my opinion.
The “WHY” at 8:36 is my favorite part of the song.
Songs I would say are great
-whirl
-thirty-three
-Starz
-Geek USA
-United States
-Mayonnaise
Also drummer Jimmy chamberlain is underrated AF and should be considered one of the goat 🐐 drummers.
That’s me! I agree with the list you have there!
Yes they should be in there, this CD was one of the best selling CDs of all time. This was one amazing tour, they were so good live.
I'd add "Soma", "Starla", and "Cherub Rock" to the list of Smashing Pumpkins
Billy's lyrics and music got me thru that 17-20 yr old search for identity. It was nice to hear someone give Jimmy Chamberlain props on drums. Bold move playing Ruby Nice. ❤
Any reactor to the mighty smashing pumpkins gets a folllow! In the pantheon of greatest bands ever
This song is a testament to Billy's unmatched ability to create epic soundscapes backed by the rest of the amazing talented band.
Jimmy Chamberlain was always my favorite drummer in the midst of an astonishingly great class of drummers from the 90s. I just vibed with his feel like no other. The song Quiet is a pretty fun one with great drums that should catch your ear.
They are the kings (and a queen ) of combining quite and loud music to a magical harmony . Great catalog to explore.
His voice has more range than a lot of their recorded stuff might imply. I recommend their live version of An Ode to No One.
One of my all time favorite performances from ANY band! Absolutely fire!
Jimmy Chamberlin is one of the all-time great rock drummers.
Agreed, kudos for picking this song. The Smashing Pumpkins are and have always been by far my favorite band ever since Gish first came out. I’ve seen them 8 times and can’t wait to see them again.
Porcelina of the Vast Oceans. Give this song a whirl. You won’t regret it
And Soma!
The drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is criminally underrated. Been one of my favorites for a long time. I love is work on the song "An ode to no one". Great video's bud!
Legend of a tune. One of their best. Your requestor was on point.
This is a perfect song of psychedelic rock
Alan killed it on this request, a classic deep cut that is probably better than their known hits of the double EP.
This song almost sounds like it was a cut off the Siamese Dream album (imo their best) , just the sound and feel feels like it could have come off the album.
This is Allan's daughter, dont inflate his ego lmao (jk love you dad :D)
Love you commenting on his fills! Jimmy Chamberlin is my favorite drummer!
Love this song!! Definitely up there as one of my favorites
first time viewer of your channel. i am at 1:13, paused the video to comment - you haven't started listening to it yet... but from a long time fan, you're in for a hell of a time.
enjoy the ride - i'll see you on the other side.
13:08 i knew you'd love it. 🧡
"Cherub Rock" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" - their best tracks IMHO!
“The Beginning is the End is the Beginning” was used in the Watchmen movie. Amazing pumpkins song too (among many others already mentioned in these comments).
Which is also the slowed down remix of The end is the beginning of the end from Batman&Robin, (which is not amazing)
Smashing Pumpkins should absolutely be in the hof.
This album (Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) is a masterpiece
Needs to be listened to from beginning to end. It's a story.
Glad you like Billy's voice! I love it too. It fits their sound. The Pumpkins are legends.
On cd I agree, sadly live he would more often than not just screech the lyrics
@@daveangels I agree. He is at his best in the studio.
Your face at 4:30 when the riff dropped 🤣
Love the pumpkins 🧡🎃and Billy’s voice is perfect for their vibe. Their songs are often for the weirdos those that don’t always fit in they sing of unrequited love, loneliness, and the raw emotions come through in Billy’s voice. Some favorites include: Soma, Hummer, Snail, 1979, Here Is No Why, Tonight Tonight.
this whole album is golden. there are so many hidden jems , like this song. it's one of if not the best album of the 90s. and a double, at that.
The lyrics are special for sure. Happy theyre appreciated
🎃Love Smashing Pumpkins!!! Please react to -Bullet with Butterfly Wings -Tonight, Tonight -Cherub Rock -Thanks!!!
One of their best songs. Epic in every way.
I saw SP 4 times in the early to mid-90s. They were the soundtrack to my college years. I remember so viscerally the first time I heard them- someone was playing the Gish cd while driving me around in their truck. And I was moved beyond belief- immediately.
"It's a softer voice or whatever..."
Hehe.
Absolute goosebumps. I just love the epicness of this track.
This is one of their best! Thank you for your analyse. I listen to it for 28 years et ça continue de ma donner la chair de poule !
❤❤❤
I’m so stoked for you!
