Flashback.....1993.... I'm 21 yrs old..... I'm in Atlanta, Georgia playing in a garage band. We're trying to be the "Next Big Band" .... This song and ALL OF the bands from this year are inspiring us....... It doesn't happen...... We didn't make it big. It's okay, we had flippen fun, and the bands that did make it..... Good for them!

Of course Billy Corgan is a super talented songwriter and guitarist, but the deeper you go down the Smashing Pumpkins rabbit hole, you’ll find that Jimmy Chamberlin is one the greatest rock drummers to ever do it. His sense of swing and feel is next level, and some of his hand and foot combinations are mind boggling. He’s huge part of what makes them great.
@@starla9 I started to hear that more after seeing them play live and watching how often he rooted that swing feel with either an 8th note or 16th note pulse with his left foot on the high hat. John Bonham also did that on a lot of Zeppelin songs. Once you become aware of it, it’s impossible not to hear and sounds so great incorporated into rock music.
Hell yeah, the drummer is almost always what makes a band either good or legendary and Jimmy's one the best to ever do it. So glad he made it through the rough times.
@@pablozee6359 It's so great. Really different feeling to the music. For a long time, it really frustrated me. I was getting into listening to and playing drums, but I mostly listened to post-hardcore, punk, alternative type bands. I could mimic their drumming, or anticipate on instinct. But I cannot with SP at all. Jimmy Chamberlain has such different instincts, different emphasis, sometimes he does the opposite of the instincts I learned from others. Even after listening for 25 years. I've realized that I have to just enjoy and not even try to connect with the drums the way I can with other bands.
Absolutely, made my dad drive me to best buy july 27 1993 to buy the album listened to it instead of doing my homework, lol good times. Will never forget, wound up owning most of their discography.
Great choice! I hope you get a chance to listen to the entire album Siamese Dream. Start to finish, it’s nothing short of rock perfection. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
They're BASICALLY the first of their kind, by their own admission they borrowed pretty hard from "my bloody valentine" and even early "the cure" (very different from later cure), but they were the first American band to morph those UK influences into a unique sound for sure, and the smashing pumpkins sound remains its own specific thing definitely. They're iconic, 90s wise, no doubt.
"All those angels with their wings glued on" This line has stuck with me since i heard this 30 years ago. I don't care much for the modern Smashing pumpkins sound, but the albums from the 90s are just undeniable. Timeless.
90’s was an interesting time in music for sure. Tons of great bands came out during that time. And they all were getting tons of airtime. It was a great time to be young.
The 90's was a sea change in musical taste. A counter culture responding to the 80's excess and commercialism developed and the fashion changed. It created a vacuum for new music that larger labels didn't see coming. Big labels went out and grabbed up every upcoming band and obscure indie, and shoved them in front of the public to find out what would stick. They just didn't know at the time, so you got a wave of weird groups that would have normally never had a chance outside of indie getting a chance.
@@dancode9738 yeah and my CD collection grew and grew. I was lucky to see lots of these bands back then too. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Cracker, Self, Stabbing Westword, and I could go on and on. Awesome time in my life being in my early twenties. I do regret not going to Woodstock 94. Blind Melon is one of my favorite bands from that time to this day.
I might have missed this. But very important. Butch Vig, the drummer for Garbage was the producer for this album and Gish. Also produced Nirvana’s Nevermind. Foo Fighters Wasting Light and Sonic Highways. Sonic Youth, Soul Asylum, and Green Day among others. Very influential producer in the 90’s and up to now.
This whole album was a Jimmy Chamberlin drumming masterpiece. I reckon he was the most important part of their early sound, and on songs like Cherub Rock and Geek USA he was on top of his game.
This intro wasn't just a build for this song, it was the build for the whole album. And for many people this was their introduction to Smashing Pumpkins (as Siamese Dream was their breakout album).
Perfectly said. It laid the groundwork for the rest of any of their music to come. Layer after layer after layer, building and shaping a story that has yet to end. No songwriter like WPC, no band like SP.
I remember seeing this video for the first time on the show 120 minutes on MTV and immediately thought "this is the music for me". I went out and bought Siamese Dream that week. This era was special for rock music. Everything was so new and different and I was all in. I'm lucky to have lived a short train ride to downtown Chicago where I was able to see all the great bands of this era in smaller venues like The Riviera, The Aragon Ballroom, and The Metro. I was 16-20 years old and having the time of my life. I was able to pay $30 and see the Smashing Pumpkins at the Aragon Ballroom. Rage Against the Machine at Aragon. Primus at the Riviera, Foo Fighters at the Riv. I saw Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Janes Addiction, Beck, Filter, Helmet, Ministry. It was a great time in my life.
I wish I could hear Cherub Rock for the first time again. I can't even explain how I felt the first time. Truly amazing for me anyways. MAYONNAISE!!! FOR SURE NEXT
The essence and beauty of alternative. You dont have to conform to mainstream standards to come up with excellent music. Billy's voice is raw and unpretentious and it is perfect the way it is
I was and am a Smashing Pumpkins fan from the beginning. I base myself in metal (what is considered classic metal now Megadeth and Metallica) and very naturally gravitated to Grunge when it started popping off. Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc. Early to mid 90s was some great music and great bands.
...those were all excellent acts, a very exciting time in music, coming off the hair do metal years...my intro to metal was Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, UFO, Scorpions...Also grew up with MotleyCrue, Ratt....
Smashing Pumpkins were amazing to see live - saw them outdoors in Australia and it was a huge crush with lots of crowd surfing. It was a great warm up for Soundgarden too 😀

Dude, u nailed it! The big gtr sound, Billy’s floating voice😂, and jimmys powerful drumming…I was on a boring trip to the mall, Sacramento, 92, and that song came on. Buddies and I basically had to pull over…Minds blown, hearts won! Thanks for getting me psyched for pumpkins near dc end o’ August! (For me, the pumpkins sound is a continuation of a lot of 70s classic rock like Zep, but when it’s done with this level of craftsmanship and heart, it transcends!)
Jimmy Chamberlain, the drummer, is one of the best. He holds back a lot. Only lets it out once in a while. When he does, you can tell that you just heard something special. Much more restrained than Danny from Tool, but can hit similar heights in moments and also has a very recognizable style.
I’ve always held that Matt Cameron from Soundgarden gets left out of these conversations a lot. He’s just as good as Chamberlain IMO, just more “laid back” in his approach.
Fun fact. The guitarist James Iha was also an initial member of Maynards 2nd band, A Perfect Circle. Billy Howerdale used to be The Smashing Pumpkins guitar tech and got James on board

I always thought this was about Paradise Lost and the Devil rallying the angels of Hell to rebel against Heaven. Go back and read the lyrics, they make perfect sense. Even the title, Cherub rock because the Devil was the first angel.

i was 19 when i first bought the Siamese Dream CD. this opening track blew my ears out on my headphone. still good to listen to on Spotify now while driving.
Entire album is absolutely amazing but there's no question that this is one of the best intros to an album ever, because it definitively prooves this band's mission statement: solid and direct rock with unique passionate musical expression, with added, psychedelic and peaceful passages, all perfectly mixed...Jimmy Chamberlain is a BEAST, I don't know how many drummers who can be so totally on time and hype but also expressive as well... and this first moment was most people's introduction do him and the band. nothing else needs be said about Billy's ability to write a song and the rest of the band's ability to deliver it... dude is a egomaniac but most truly a musical hero... so glad yr checking these tracks out and digging them, great content! and yes, do check out Mayonnaise, Soma and Hummer next, basically 3 of the best rock songs of all time!!!
I saw them in 1994 on the tour for this record .They played their set twice all the way through. It was a hot Florida night and Billy came out in his fur coat and they fucking blew everyone's minds. They were a tremendous live act. This guy was taking a drink of his beer standing in front of me and heavy music kicked in and I blasted him .I just couldn't help myself. The music just grabbed you by the balls and didn't let go.
Jimmy Chamberlain (drummer) is probably one of the best drummers of the 90's He had a history in jazz drumming. He always sat behind his drumset, without a drop of sweat, pounding away on snare rolls etc. Always keeps his quarter notes on his hihat foot.
I totally agree and love the song too. The problem was that Mellon Collie was packed with singles over the course of two disks. Great tune though and he should react to it
Balsamic Vinegar in a bowl with a banana with a couple drops of dish soap. Cover with Saran wrap and poke holes with a fork. Soap breaks surface tension and flies land on it and can't get out.

If you want peak SP, check out their first studio album Gish, it is a masterpiece. 'Bury Me' is still my all-time favorite Pumpkins song, that guitar breakdown is a thing a beauty.
Smashing Pumpkins have some absolutely incredible songs, incredible guitar playing, incredible drums, really huge sound and songs that youll never forget like Tonight, Tonight. 1979. Bullets With Butterfly Wings, Zero, Rhinoceros.....
Siamese Dream really broke them. Geek USA is a track that gets your attention from the get. But…I am a devotee if their first album “Gish”. I saw them before it came out and when they played songs from Gish, the crowd lost their minds. It wasn’t grunge. It was heavy psychedelic garage hypno rock coz we were putty in their hands. Billy lulled us into submission with “Rhinoceros” before blowing our minds hitting the madness with “SIVA”. Yeah…this stays on my forever playlist.
for the fruit flies, fill a small dish with Balsamic Vineager, get some cellophane, Saran wrap, cover the top of the dish, use a rubber band to keep it tight. Poke a bunch of small holes in the Saran wrap with a pencil. The flies will be attracted to the Vineager and crawl into the holes and drown. A fly trap. A fruit fly trap.
This is an old hillbilly trick put apple cider vinegar in a cup with some Dawn dish soap, and then put saran wrap over it and put a couple holes in the top of the saran wrap. It will get stuck in it it works 👍

For the gnats! There are several plugin to an outlet style light with sticky paper that attracts bugs. They work amazing in my kitchen. I am bug free in Texas, that's saying something. Also Jimmy Chamberlin is their drummer, and he is an absolute god. Geek USA for next Pumpkins track!!!!
I was a band in the early 2000s and we didn't play a lot of covers but we played this song and it's just so much fun to play, to layer all that thick guitar and have those great drum parts, it's just amazing.

IMO...this album has some of the greatest guitar tone building, ever. They went to EXTREMES with the guitar layering to get those tones. Listen to the song Hummer from the same album. There is a part in the second bridge where the guitar sounds like a chainsaw cutting through butter. Siamese Dream is one the greatest albums I have ever heard in my life.
When i had fruit fly issues a while ago i found that a bowl or dish filled with apple cider vinegar and a couple drops of dish soap covered with a saran wrap with some holes in it helped, it didnt solve the problem but it definitely got rid of the most of them. Also great reaction to a great song.
The 90s (especially in NYC) was MAGIC. Alternative music... including, TOGETHER for FIRST time, alternative hip-hop. Native Tongues... others like Cypress Hill. Ice-t's punk/metal band Body Count, Ice Cube! They all toured together... Same Fans. Same Crowd. Mosh pits for hip-hop AND bands like Soundgarden & Smashing Pumpkins. DotCom ECONOMY BOOM. Again... magic
Speaking as a child of the 90s 😉... But yea, the biggest problem i always had when trying to get someone into SP, either now or back when it first came out, was Billy's voice. I mean, i guess i get it, but they had a PERFECT run of albums in the 90s, both musically and lyrically. Anyhow... kepp up the good work 🙏
Never bothered me, it suited the music. I mean, there's a MYRIAD of lead vocalists out there who can't really "sing" - you would never send anyone to them for vocal lessons - but they have a distinct, recognizable sound and it just works with the music
When I first heard his voice (around 92ish), I didn’t really dig it. But something happened & a couple months later, I totally got it. Been a huge fan ever since.
Nowhere Fast, Jellybelly, Hummer ...those three have the sound ur looking for. High intensity focused distortion and phycadelic grooves. Very incredible music man.
They sell this gnat killer that looks like a cute little plastic red apple. You pour the stuff into it and set it where you want it, like the back of the kitchen sink. The gnats all go to it like the ant motel. Terro (I believe makes it). Easy Peasy. They bug me to! 😂

Once I learned that he had initially trained in big band, swing, and jazz styles, wow could I suddenly hear it in the music. He is amazing.

Smashing Pumpkins were amazing to see live - saw them outdoors in Australia and it was a huge crush with lots of crowd surfing. It was a great warm up for Soundgarden too 😀

Dude, u nailed it! The big gtr sound, Billy’s floating voice😂, and jimmys powerful drumming…I was on a boring trip to the mall, Sacramento, 92, and that song came on. Buddies and I basically had to pull over…Minds blown, hearts won! Thanks for getting me psyched for pumpkins near dc end o’ August! (For me, the pumpkins sound is a continuation of a lot of 70s classic rock like Zep, but when it’s done with this level of craftsmanship and heart, it transcends!)

Jimmy Chamberlain, the drummer, is one of the best. He holds back a lot. Only lets it out once in a while. When he does, you can tell that you just heard something special. Much more restrained than Danny from Tool, but can hit similar heights in moments and also has a very recognizable style.
I’ve always held that Matt Cameron from Soundgarden gets left out of these conversations a lot. He’s just as good as Chamberlain IMO, just more “laid back” in his approach.
Fun fact. The guitarist James Iha was also an initial member of Maynards 2nd band, A Perfect Circle. Billy Howerdale used to be The Smashing Pumpkins guitar tech and got James on board

I always thought this was about Paradise Lost and the Devil rallying the angels of Hell to rebel against Heaven. Go back and read the lyrics, they make perfect sense. Even the title, Cherub rock because the Devil was the first angel.

i was 19 when i first bought the Siamese Dream CD. this opening track blew my ears out on my headphone. still good to listen to on Spotify now while driving.

Billy and Jimmy, while both respected, are two of the most under rated duos ever in rock and roll history. EVER.
Entire album is absolutely amazing but there's no question that this is one of the best intros to an album ever, because it definitively prooves this band's mission statement: solid and direct rock with unique passionate musical expression, with added, psychedelic and peaceful passages, all perfectly mixed...Jimmy Chamberlain is a BEAST, I don't know how many drummers who can be so totally on time and hype but also expressive as well... and this first moment was most people's introduction do him and the band. nothing else needs be said about Billy's ability to write a song and the rest of the band's ability to deliver it... dude is a egomaniac but most truly a musical hero... so glad yr checking these tracks out and digging them, great content! and yes, do check out Mayonnaise, Soma and Hummer next, basically 3 of the best rock songs of all time!!!

I saw them in 1994 on the tour for this record .They played their set twice all the way through. It was a hot Florida night and Billy came out in his fur coat and they fucking blew everyone's minds. They were a tremendous live act. This guy was taking a drink of his beer standing in front of me and heavy music kicked in and I blasted him .I just couldn't help myself. The music just grabbed you by the balls and didn't let go.

Jimmy Chamberlain (drummer) is probably one of the best drummers of the 90's
He had a history in jazz drumming. He always sat behind his drumset, without a drop of sweat, pounding away on snare rolls etc.
Always keeps his quarter notes on his hihat foot.
One of their most underrated songs that is AMAZING is "Here is No Why" from mellon collie and the infinite sadness album. Worth a listen.
I totally agree and love the song too. The problem was that Mellon Collie was packed with singles over the course of two disks. Great tune though and he should react to it

Bury Me may be my favorite as well. Gish is definitely my favorite album of that era.

Yes! Bury Me is my favorite track off Gish followed by Snail and Rhinoceros. The live British TV performance of Rhinoceros was incredible too.

Smashing Pumpkins have some absolutely incredible songs, incredible guitar playing, incredible drums, really huge sound and songs that youll never forget like Tonight, Tonight. 1979. Bullets With Butterfly Wings, Zero, Rhinoceros.....
Siamese Dream really broke them. Geek USA is a track that gets your attention from the get. But…I am a devotee if their first album “Gish”. I saw them before it came out and when they played songs from Gish, the crowd lost their minds. It wasn’t grunge. It was heavy psychedelic garage hypno rock coz we were putty in their hands. Billy lulled us into submission with “Rhinoceros” before blowing our minds hitting the madness with “SIVA”. Yeah…this stays on my forever playlist.

for the fruit flies, fill a small dish with Balsamic Vineager, get some cellophane, Saran wrap, cover the top of the dish, use a rubber band to keep it tight. Poke a bunch of small holes in the Saran wrap with a pencil. The flies will be attracted to the Vineager and crawl into the holes and drown. A fly trap. A fruit fly trap.
This is an old hillbilly trick put apple cider vinegar in a cup with some Dawn dish soap, and then put saran wrap over it and put a couple holes in the top of the saran wrap. It will get stuck in it it works 👍

Pumpkins went pretty damn flawless for several albums. I saw them in Jacksonville shortly before Gish released and was hooked from then on.
For the gnats! There are several plugin to an outlet style light with sticky paper that attracts bugs. They work amazing in my kitchen. I am bug free in Texas, that's saying something. Also Jimmy Chamberlin is their drummer, and he is an absolute god. Geek USA for next Pumpkins track!!!!

I was a band in the early 2000s and we didn't play a lot of covers but we played this song and it's just so much fun to play, to layer all that thick guitar and have those great drum parts, it's just amazing.

IMO...this album has some of the greatest guitar tone building, ever. They went to EXTREMES with the guitar layering to get those tones. Listen to the song Hummer from the same album. There is a part in the second bridge where the guitar sounds like a chainsaw cutting through butter. Siamese Dream is one the greatest albums I have ever heard in my life.
When i had fruit fly issues a while ago i found that a bowl or dish filled with apple cider vinegar and a couple drops of dish soap covered with a saran wrap with some holes in it helped, it didnt solve the problem but it definitely got rid of the most of them. Also great reaction to a great song.
The 90s (especially in NYC) was MAGIC. Alternative music... including, TOGETHER for FIRST time, alternative hip-hop. Native Tongues... others like Cypress Hill. Ice-t's punk/metal band Body Count, Ice Cube! They all toured together... Same Fans. Same Crowd. Mosh pits for hip-hop AND bands like Soundgarden & Smashing Pumpkins. DotCom ECONOMY BOOM. Again... magic

Speaking as a child of the 90s 😉... But yea, the biggest problem i always had when trying to get someone into SP, either now or back when it first came out, was Billy's voice. I mean, i guess i get it, but they had a PERFECT run of albums in the 90s, both musically and lyrically. Anyhow... kepp up the good work 🙏

Never bothered me, it suited the music. I mean, there's a MYRIAD of lead vocalists out there who can't really "sing" - you would never send anyone to them for vocal lessons - but they have a distinct, recognizable sound and it just works with the music
When I first heard his voice (around 92ish), I didn’t really dig it. But something happened & a couple months later, I totally got it. Been a huge fan ever since.
