Billy (and the band) don't like to repeat themselves. The sound evolved in every single release from Gish onward. People who couldn't grasp that fell off the train at Adore. But Adore is a master work in its own non-Siamese-Dream way. Worth a listen as an independent piece, not a part of a succession of records. But if you're honest with yourself, Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness sound nothing alike, either. Really in no way at all. So not sure why people were shocked with Adore. Mayonaise takes me back to the same place, every time. Being 14 in 1995. In the pale afternoon light...air still warm....twilight coming. Turning off of the sidewalk onto the dirt. The trail through the bushes, under the tall power lines. The empty land between the suburban housing developments was our land, the land of those who were stuck in between childhood and adulthood.
Same here, this song is a great masterpiece. Hits me at a time when I was in my early 20's. Kid in the 80s, teenager and adult in the 90s. I feel we had it best
I have lyrics from this song tattooed. This song hits right in the feels every single time - from when I first purchased this album in the 90's, until now. It's seen me through a lot 🖤🖤
Luna, Mayonaise, and Soma are my favorite Pumpkins tunes. So glad you discovered this song. One of my all time favorite songs. Siamese Dream is a masterpiece from start to finish. It was a joy watching you take it all in for the first time…brought me back to when I played that track over and over again.
Man, this album is pure gold from top to bottom. One thing I enjoyed about this video is that it wasn't that long, because sometimes the song is so good that you forget to stop to talk about it. Great vid!
Glad to see you enjoying them so much. Even though they were selling out stadiums and headlining festivals in the 90s they're still one of the most criminally underrated bands of all time because the deeper cuts that fewer people are familiar with are *so* good.
Yes, this. People who think Today or 1979 are the pinnacle of the group literally have no idea. Those aren't even top 5 best songs by the band. Ruby, Porcelina, Mayonaise, Soma, Snail, For Martha (song about his deceased mom), Drown, and so so many more. The Machina 2 (not an official release) has some bangers that never got refined into full releases.
Polo you have 3 whole albums of this consistency.Gish. Siamese Dream. Mellon Collie. 3 masterpieces in a row. Adore and Machina are great as well. Pumpkins have an ENDLESS catalogue of good songs
Including a new 3-disc 2-hour-long album that came out this month... ATUM. If you want to get into it in pieces, start with Beguiled, and if you want an even better version, find the Jimmy Fallen show version. They killed it live and it's better than the recorded version.
All great albums BUT between Siamese Dream and MCIS is the crown jewel - the often unmentioned Pisces Iscariot album! If I were shipwrecked and could only have one album, its the one.
"Cherub Rock" was their first hit, it's amazing, you'll see why it made them famous. Also, "Zero", "Today" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" were big hits, and all amazing as well.
That look on your face around 2:20 when the bass drum hits, after that little arpeggio in the beginning! That's the moment when you get a sense of just how deep the sound is going to get, and then, when that first wall of distorted guitar power chord crashes in, it's so fucking satisfying!!!! I remember hearing it for the first time at 15 as I biked home from my job as a stockboy at Zellers, one summer night in 1993. I didn't go home. I went to the park across the road, climbed my favourite tree and listened to this song over and over and over again, pushing my earbuds as far into my poor ears as I could, trying to lock this amazing sound into my head forever... I love that it still hits that hard!!
Class of 97. This was my theme song of the late 90’s. The melancholy of knowing you have to grow up and friends will drift apart but you’ll always have those memories.
Billy Corgan is an emotional song writer. Ironically, he was at his best when he was unhappy and you can see that in the song writing in both Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. These three albums are undoubtedly among the top alternative albums of all time. When you get a chance, you should listen to them all from start to finish. You will not be disappointed. Not all the songs are "hits", but they all are worth listening to and represent a lot of the mellon collie overtones of the 90s. I personally recommend the song Jellybelly 😁
What’s ironic is this is literally like the only song Billy never wrote James actually wrote this one , which is crazy, not only cuz of Billy’s control and ego we all know of, it’s also one of their best songs
I'd argue that there are few songwriters that aren't tapping the ol emotional well when doing their thing. The mood and overall tone varies wildly, but it's pretty much all emotion when music is the topic.
My favorite Smashing Pumpkins song has got to be "Eye" off of the Lost Highway soundtrack. The beat is great, the lyrics are great, but the transitions -- the transitions are just awesome. Such a good song!
Yes! I’ve been commenting every video about reacting to Eye! We need to push for it! It’s one of their best songs but it seems people have forgotten about it!
you found their greatest song and it didn't take you long. the guitars whistle on this bitch. probably the greatest song i've ever heard in my lifetime. certaintly my fave SP song bar none. the record should have been called "Sonic Dream" b/c that's what it is. it's a masterpiece of a record. top 3 records in my lifetime right here.
I've been a Pumpkins fan since early on but I never thought they'd be great live. Boy was I wrong. I've seen them several times in smaller theaters and small clubs and they truly rock. Their music is heavier than it seems at first. Some of the best shows I've ever seen.
Somehow 1979 is like that even though it's not about the 90's. It just makes me feel like getting in my first car that had no A/C and driving around aimlessly because we had nothing else to do.
I use to play this song and To Forgive from them when I was at rock bottom and needed something to help me vent. I still deal with the pain today, but I’m just glad I didn’t take my life and I’m still here holding on to hope. 🖤
The pumpkins are one of those bands that make "albums"... the songs work on their own...but to really appreciate the music on another layer, it would be worth listening to the entire album... Start with Siamese Dream and then Mellon Collie... The ones that come after are great albums as well. but these two records are near perfect from start to finish. It would be fun to watch a whole album reaction.
I've always admired how absolutely deliberate Billy and the band are with their tones. It comes off as low fidelity but it is anything but. Very layered and beautiful.
Great album, a masterpiece really. That intro is one of the greatest pieces of guitar music ever written. Im glad you are getting turned on to all this awesome 90s rock. Sometimes I think it would be cool to have the people such as yourself who have a reaction channel to do a reverse day sometime where you pick a song that most of us may not have heard thats a favorite of yours and do a video with it.
Polo, TSP is a great road to travel with songs that just grab you with chill vibes (like Mayonnaise) or sudden blow your wig off chords (Cherub Rock). Great band and the more you discover, the more you'll come to realize just how overall great they are.
One of my favorite pumpkins songs of all time! The weird little hissing sound is from a really cheap guitar Billy bought and liked the sound so much he used it for the song... It's also kind of crazy how many good songs they have.
This has always been my favorite SP song, most likely because I fell in love with it at age 14 and it's grip has never loosened, but they have a bunch of other bangers! "Galapagos", "Rhinoceros", "Porcelina of the Vast Ocean", "Tonight, Tonight", "Soma", and many, many more!
One of the undeniable strengths of SP is their drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin. There are so many great songs that display his "from a whisper to a roar" talents, but one that comes to mind that is the song "Jellybelly". It's pretty common knowledge amongst Pumpkins fans that Jimmy is heavily influenced by jazz and his jazz/rock-style/technique is on a full display here.
This is some Bob Mould "wall of guitars" shit. Sounds like 27 guitars cracking it out in perfect time with each other. Not to mention the drumming. WOW. Thanks dude
Their later stuff was good but this* CD was always either in my player or on the first or second page of my CD book back in the 90s. Absolute masterpiece.
This is REALLY my favourite band of all time but the three songs you reacted to may not be the pumpkins I necessarily concider my favourites. I tend to go for the heavier stuff and if you want to hear what a badass drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is you should check out Geek U.S.A., Cherub Rock, I Am One, Siva or X.Y.U. to name a few.
The greatest alternative rock album of all time. From start to finish it is pure brilliance. I was 18 when it blew me away and at 49 it is still in heavy rotation for me and still blows me away all these years later. Soundtrack of my life.
I know it's been a minute since you posted this vid. But I remember listening to this band after this album dropped. I was 17, and this song hit me so hard. I could feel the pain in the music and lyrics clearly. Parts of it I felt I could relate. Despising the struggles and unfulfillment of conformity, just wanting to be loved for who I was and to just be me, wanting my family life to be better than it was. I've always kept a memorable place in my heart for this song. Glad you got to hear it.
All the pumpkins albums between Gish and Machina II are completely excellent. I personally don't think any of the songs on those albums are even average, they're literally all excellent. The fact that you've listened to three songs and two of those weren't "hits" but epics in the SP catalogue, and you liked them is completely amazing. You'll love the hits I'm sure, but I'm really happy for you. You get to listen to all these songs for the first time. What a blessing it has been to see your channel, and to see you actually enjoying all this good rock music. Makes me feel good knowing there's a new pumpkins fan.
currently on a musical journey myself and it enticed me to listen to some old Pumpkins and i wanted to see someone react to my favorite and here we are
If you were a hurt kid or young adult when this came out to this day on occasion it might pull a tear! It's one of those! Love to love to love the bitter and sweet and sad and love
Mayonaise has always been one my favorite songs in the world. Has been a north star at times and has lifted my spirits when they've been the lowest. You should check out "In the arms of sleep". The guitars cry in the background of that song. Such a beautiful somber song.
an ode to no one, disarm, and porcelina of the vast oceans are some of my favorite pumpkins songs. cant wait to see more in the future, you're gonna love the band!
One of my favorite things about The Smashing Pumpkins is the dynamic range in most of their tunes. They will go from soft & low to wall of sound and back again so smoothly. Siamese Dream was the best album of the '90's so you basically can't go wrong checking out anything from that release. I also really love the tune Drown from their earlier album Gish.
Not only my favorite Pumpkins song, but my all time favorite. The music, mood, and lyrics just get me down to my soul. I always tear up a bit no matter how many times I hear it. Glad you liked it. Look forward to more Pumpkin reactions. As for suggestions, their two best albums were Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie so anything off that would work. Their first album Gish is a really solid debut.
Smashing pumpkins are a HUGE part of 90's inspiration, if you put patches of bands on your backpack in highschool Smashing pumpkins was one of them. Disarm, Today, Tonight Tonight, zero are great songs to check out. Thank you POLO
I love that as the outro plays (around 8:00) your facial expression settles and you blankly process what you've just heard. No gestures, no words, but we all know the feeling when we hear those last few notes of a song that electrified us or when the credits roll on a movie that blew our minds. The first is always the best, it's a magical feeling.
Siamese Dream when it came out 1993 along with other great albums at that time, impacted my high school self and defined who I am now. This song in particular was one of those tracks that were on repeat.
Siamese Dream is an amazzzzing album. Fun Fact: There's a random out of key guitar "Whistle" that happens in parts of the song. It is due to the fact that Billy's guitar was so old and cheap everytime he stopped playing it, it made that "Whistle" sound so they wrote it into the song. As a 90s kid I just got the pleasure of seeing the pumpkins live and they DID NOT dissapoint.
I loved the smashing pumpkins growing up because even before I knew how to articulate the sentiment I could feel they were a band with Midwestern sensibilities that mirrored my own in many ways.
Finally you did it, I hope you enjoyed the beauty and the pain of it, it is a masterpiece from them. Thank you for finally checking them out AFTER 7 MONTHS OF LONG AWAITED REPLY.

Exactly. There's such a softness to the Heaviness, if you know what I mean 😁

I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary

While the harlots of my perils
Scream
And I fail
But when I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will
Mother weep the years I'm missing
All our time can't be given
Back
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
That cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
So bad
When I can, I will
Words defy the plan
When I can, I will
Fool enough to almost be it
And cool enough to not quite see it
And old enough to always feel this
Always old, I'll always feel this
No more promise no more sorrow
No longer will I follow
Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
When I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

What’s ironic is this is literally like the only song Billy never wrote
James actually wrote this one , which is crazy, not only cuz of Billy’s control and ego we all know of, it’s also one of their best songs
@@ACarter87 James wrote the basic chords, but Billy wrote the lyrics and the melody.
The live version with Marilyn Manson is so good.
Yes! I’ve been commenting every video about reacting to Eye! We need to push for it! It’s one of their best songs but it seems people have forgotten about it!
Holly crap I don’t know this song 😮
@@alfieholloway it’s wicked good. A hidden gem.
Pumpkins on a David Lynch soundtrack. Cant go wrong
you found their greatest song and it didn't take you long. the guitars whistle on this bitch. probably the greatest song i've ever heard in my lifetime. certaintly my fave SP song bar none. the record should have been called "Sonic Dream" b/c that's what it is. it's a masterpiece of a record. top 3 records in my lifetime right here.
This sing helped me get through my best friend passing in high school. Thanks for listening.
I've been a Pumpkins fan since early on but I never thought they'd be great live. Boy was I wrong. I've seen them several times in smaller theaters and small clubs and they truly rock. Their music is heavier than it seems at first. Some of the best shows I've ever seen.
Holy dang. I love this song. Geek USA and Hummer too.
I like to think this song encapsulates being a teenager in the 90s. I was one and it always hits home.
So glad you've discovered the Pumpkins. They are one of my favorites, and they have a TON of great tunes.
"Fool enough to almost be it, Cool enough to not quite see it" WHAT a line...
The entire Siamese Dream album is iconic. A great listen all the way through.
Pumpkins are one of the great rock bands. It's easy to forget them, so long ago. Thanks for the reminder.
Start with Siamese Dream? Acting like Gish never happened. And Gish is fucking amazing.
Gish. Start with Gish.
Gish ftw
This song has my all time favourite guitar solo - brief and to the point, with a tone you feel like you can chew on. Wonderful
Drown, Cherub Rock, Hummer, Soma, etc, how many times I listen to these tracks summer time in my room in my youth
One of my favorite pumpkins songs of all time! The weird little hissing sound is from a really cheap guitar Billy bought and liked the sound so much he used it for the song... It's also kind of crazy how many good songs they have.
That sound is the whole song
This has always been my favorite SP song, most likely because I fell in love with it at age 14 and it's grip has never loosened, but they have a bunch of other bangers! "Galapagos", "Rhinoceros", "Porcelina of the Vast Ocean", "Tonight, Tonight", "Soma", and many, many more!
Silver Fuck. Now that's a song title. And a real barn burner of a song!
The whole “Siamese Dream” album is such a win. Not a bad song at all. “Hummer” would be my next suggestion.
This is some Bob Mould "wall of guitars" shit. Sounds like 27 guitars cracking it out in perfect time with each other. Not to mention the drumming. WOW. Thanks dude
Soma is a ridiculously good song...the whole of Siamese Dream and Gish are just the Pumpkins at their simplistic best...
Has anyone said Jellybelly!?
The Pumpkins should be in the R&R Hall of Fame!!!
Just listen to the whole of Siamese Dream. I can pretty much guarantee you'll appreciate the time spent.
One of the best rock songs in the '90's ... very emotional ! 🎧🎤🥁🎸
Listen to Anything off the album Siamese Dream- Cherub Rock
Man the nostalgia and chills I get from this song are unmatched :( I was 18 when this song came out and it feels like yesterday :(
an ode to no one, disarm, and porcelina of the vast oceans are some of my favorite pumpkins songs. cant wait to see more in the future, you're gonna love the band!
"Smashing pumpkins Sunday" Sounds like a great day to listen and discover how underrated they were as musicians in th 90's
I second this.
This is literally the song that comes to mind when I think of music as a concept.
One of the greatest guitar records of all time!!! The music over all and the vocals,, this is one of the greatest records ever to be recorded!!
Dude, the solo brings me to tears and the whole ending. So powerful!!! One of my favorite all time bands.
30 years ago it was all I listened to, for years. I can still lose myself in SP 😊😊
One of my favorite songs of all time. Just something to the vibe of this song. Thanks for checking it out.
He's great live in concert. Welcome to an amazing music journey that I feel blessed to have rode IRL back in the day. 💜
This in 1993…pre iPhone, pre TH-cam, pre iTunes, it is hard to explain how discovering this band especially this album felt back then.
Smashing pumpkins are a HUGE part of 90's inspiration, if you put patches of bands on your backpack in highschool Smashing pumpkins was one of them. Disarm, Today, Tonight Tonight, zero are great songs to check out. Thank you POLO
The beauty of this song is that it is powerful but also feels like a blanket of love.
I have not heard this in many years, I was 22 when Siamese Dream came out... now I remember how good music was in the early 90's.
