    Jo , I hope you feelbetter soon and can do more vids soo . Would you co spider doing some airplane cockpits using some techniques that are not too advanced? I have watched some very good modelers but about halfway through I what they are doing and why. A good beginning to intermediate tutorial would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your consideration. John Mc

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your kind words! I no longer do aircraft, as my focus is on 40K now. But the techniques I employ are easily transferable. Check out additional videos I did - the 40K Sagitaur video may be helpful, as is the Star wars Legion LAAT. And you might want to check out my jonbius.com blog - I have loads of aircraft articles there.
      Also, be sure and take a look at the work Daniel Zamarbide does. He has been a huge influence on my aircraft and current work.
      I hope that helps! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hi Jon, I am watching this again to add to my weathering skills. At 19:40 you mention using VMS Oil Expert in place of turpenoid thinner. Or do I add a few drops to the turpenoid?

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's actually either/or. The more of the VMS you use, the faster it dries. I tend to use all VMS when I'm off camera just because it dries faster. But, it is more expensive than odorless turpenoid, and if you're not used to handling oils/enamels, the faster drying time can work against you. My recommendation if you're comfortable with the process is to try a 50/50 mix and see if it suits you - understanding that the flexibility window will shrink. With straight turpenoid you may be able to rework oils for 12-24 hours. With all VMS, that window may go down to a few hours depending on type of oil, application thickness, etc.
      In terms of how each product functions, it's same/same.
      HTH! Thanks John!

    • @jhoodfysh
      @jhoodfysh 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    How long do the oils take to dry?

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll have to give a politician's answer... it depends.
      Generally, to make sure they dry quickly, I apply the oils to a cardboard "palette" and let the oil paint leech out as much oil as possible. On some modeling specific brands they're already quite dry. Then I make sure to thin the oils as much as I can and still get the application I want. I like to add some VMS Oil Expert, which helps them dry.
      If I'm really pushing the envelope, I can keep drying time to a minimum... say 4-5 hours. But I do not recommend that unless you're entirely comfortable with all of the chemical interactions for later steps.
      With thin applications of oil, overnight, or even better 24 hours, is sufficient.
      Test it out with the oil paints and thinner you have on hand, say on a spare old kit, and just see what your results are. It can vary widely based on paint brand, application method, and the thickness of the application.
      I hope that helps!
