I don’t think we appreciate enough how difficult it is to accurately and concisely relay generalized information of world history that is impactful enough. I want to be a teacher, but sometimes I panic just thinking about going up in front of others and doing a topic justice. While some might consider this boring and sleep inducing, it is quite the opposite if you actually follow and understand what’s being said.

The delivery is a little insipid, but the content is quite impressive, especially on how the curriculum of world history has developed over the past 20 years. That radioactive dating from archeology not only broadened world history but influenced historians to stumble on to notion that the availability of fish protein and not agriculture might be the key why settlements formed around river valleys is astonishing.

This has actually helped me. I’ve been having some serious sleep issues since dec 2016. One night around 2am I remembered how I would fall asleep in high school hearing the teacher’s voice slowly fade out in my head. I played this, put the phone on the other side of the bed face down with a volume not too loud but not too low either... worked amazingly. I don’t know if I’ve gone past the 20 min mark without falling asleep.
I had no opportunity to study in the US, but listening this lecture I liked the balanced approach of this Lecturer in handling sensitive but important views of world history and showing respect to whole humanity without racism. I appreciate his approach.

I thought that it was boring enough to fall asleep but I ended up wanting to hear more. I never thought of it that way, but there's a real conflict of interest between publishers and knowledge, I guess.
From a historiographical point this professor makes many valid points. Sadly the rhythm in his speech is not very constant, so many people complain in their comment that it is a boring lecture. Well, if you are actually interested in history and historiography, I think this lecture is not boring at all, above all, I find it exciting that this is available freely on the TH-cam.
i'm 37m in and so far this is a lecture about the history of the history of the ways in which world civ is taught. not what i was looking for. moving over to khan academy...
I realized that everytime i have to watch a lecture I have to fight to stay awake, and have failed occassionally. So i realized... Why not use lectures when I actually need help sleeping.
This professor is very inspiring. I wish he is the one to teach my son AP History in high school. We are practically failing because the teacher does not TEACH the subject. My son's statement "If the teacher did not say "Hi" to us when she begins the lesson she would blend with the furniture." Last year (with a different teacher) I could not stop him from reading history. This year it is a disaster... We are failing quizzes and tests even I am present when he is reading the chapters and we are doing quizzes that we find online (I wish there were more of them...).
+V.U | JDoGe | I'm taking AP world history right now, and I found that just reading won't work. It's an overload of information. I used to read and reread chapters and would get C's on my tests. Now, I focus on main topics of the chapter and take short notes and usually score 90-100% on my tests. Hope this helps
Whilst the first lecture might seem boring to some, the material being discussed is quite relevant. The overview of the forces that shaped the teaching of History in the USA provides context for what will be touched on for the rest of the coursework. It also gives insight into the education system in other western countries that were simultaneously being affected by the Humanities and in political priorities.
No offense, but this is the first result when when searching "boring history lecture" on TH-cam. I have put it to use to shepherd me off to sleep many, many times. The only thing I have ever found that knocks me out faster than this video is HF radio noise. Some day, I will watch the whole thing, but until then, nighty night!
I caught something very different in this presentation. Then I couldn't get enough. So far, there has been more discussion on historiography (how history is constructed). It is highly enlightening!
It sounds like the professor is saying that certain institutional, ideological and market forces have conspired to produce a world history "text," but the pressure of these forces has compromised the authenticity of said text, and he wants his students to become aware of this problem.
The first classes in university don't usually go in the subject right away. People in the comment section need to take a history class in university. -_-
Vesto lord They need to take any class in a college or university! The first lecture in any course is almost always an introduction to the subject, including the history thereof. Such an introduction usually lacks any real coverage of the course subject matter. This is beneficial to the students in more ways than one: (1) The student is made aware of the study of the subject. (2) Any student who does not have their textbook yet, or other course materials, is given the opportunity to procure said materials. (3) The student becomes familiar with their professor and his method of instruction and/or personality.
This type of class is what turns young people off from learning history. I only skipped through this but could tell that very little history was taught in this lecture and the members of the class was bored stiff.
Well said. This is a mixture of relativism and woke ideology disguised as cosmopolitanism. Now such universities have a lot of pro-Hamas students within their walls.

"The Camel and the Wheel" by Richard Bulliet This is a wonderful insight into the ancient world ... of the desert... of heat & dust ... of travel in North Africa, and into why the camel was preferred to horse-drawn carts. Many histories give information. Thus gives much more. It is illustrated with drawings as well as photos, of ancient carts used in warfare, for example, as well as of different camels. A lovely read!
Hello let me introduce myself I am a 14 year old who Is in love with History but the schools system refuses to teach it to me.Let me explain they will not teach us World History until 10th grade And I am in 8th grade. Have learned all there is to know about American history but nothing about world history. We will also only learn world history for 2 years.2 Years to cover literally everything that has happened in the world until now.I HATE that.I really want to learn about world history and this outraged me to know that we will learn about the world for such a short time.Therefor i would like to thank Columbia University for posting this playlist so I ca really take the world in, and not how the public schools do it.
ricky dedos Yes me too. Laughing out loud at all the rambling with ums and ems. At the end of a career you’d think someone would have learned how to lecture. Has he not heard of Toastmasters?
Thanks for uploading!!! He seems brilliant to me. A slow pace means more time to consider his words, and don't tell me I'm slow, cause I'm not. Just sitting here, painting fringes, listening and thinking, very much intrigued. Anyone read his book on Human-Animal-Relationships? Just read the intro and had to buy it, looking very much forward to reading!
Most classes also require you to read numerous articles, essay and/or books that will give you a full scope of the matter. These lectures are generally a nice (though not completely inclusive) condensation of the subject.
Boring? - no way! - the history teachers teaching history they had never studied, then the committees get into the act, then the textbook publishers ignoring the committee recommendations - a true saga of the American public school system at its worst - think of it as black comedy.
Fantastic free lecture series, just finished this set and am starting on the next. My only though is that so much time is spent talking about the politics and business decisions of writing the text book itself, that it almost seems as if THAT could be it's own course. "The History of Writing History" or something that deals specifically with those branches of this discussion. I could have done with %20-30 more actual historical event discussion and less "we fought over putting this in or that in", not that those branches aren't interesting in their own right, but they really seemed to derail a lot of these lectures. Also, big thumbs up for getting the board in the shot when the lecturer is referring to it UNLIKE the videos on the Yale TH-cam channel. Get your act together Yale. :D
VJMC Bulliet wrote a textbook and this series is a supplement to reading the text. I assume all his students have read the text, and he is adding perspective in this series of lectures. (I also think they are history majors which is why he talks so much about how historians do their thing!)
+VJMC The "History of writing history" is called Historiography. I took a couple courses on it in grad school. That was actually my favorite part so far. Mostly because I am an AP World History teacher (though I do not use his text) and it was a great insight into the origin of the course. It also fits well into the course he is teaching, which is as much about understanding what the history of the world is as it is about the events of world history

Beginning the course with a history of historiography is a great idea. Looking forward to the rest
Love this guy. Where else are you going to get a free history of the world course? Unique course and a treasure.
I watched this because I can't sleep but now it seems that I have become a master in history
absolutely excellent; this is the only decent history of the world i could find besides roberts book
Its 3 am and I'm unable to sleep. I searched for 'sleep inducing lecture' on TH-cam and found this on no. 1 lol! I'll try to sleep now listening to this.
At 2:26 that was me ....fell out.....slipped into a quick coma.
I could literally listen to this lecture every night for sleep. Sorry professor....but I need sleep buddy.
Time stamp notes for myself:
Driven by demand
6:22 who were to teach World History: first social study teachers, then history teachers of American history in the 1980s
9:12 college board steps in
13:00 provincializing America and Europe history
15:13 avoid any centralism
23:00 Three ways of thinking about world history:
23:00 narratives: a compromise; enormous power of textbook publishers/authors; ossified.
31:30 bridging world history. Thematic vs chronological. Does history “move” forward?
37:44 how do you provincialisme Europe
This guy is pretty interesting. I would like him as a teacher.
Amazing series of lectures! Real eye-openers. Thank you professor Bulliet!
Great for insomnia
I can't fall asleep, so I found this!
+william hung try the golf channel, too.
"The Camel and the Wheel" by Richard Bulliet
This is a wonderful insight into the ancient world ... of the desert... of heat & dust ... of travel in North Africa, and into why the camel was preferred to horse-drawn carts. Many histories give information. Thus gives much more.
It is illustrated with drawings as well as photos, of ancient carts used in warfare, for example, as well as of different camels. A lovely read!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’m enjoying this!
Hello let me introduce myself
I am a 14 year old who Is in love with History but the schools system refuses to teach it to me.Let me explain they will not teach us World History until 10th grade And I am in 8th grade.
My search was "boring lecture to sleep" and this was the first video. 😂🤣🤣 brilliant algorithm. I feel bad for him but, thanku for ur service.
It's 2:30am and I need sleep. But for some reason this is making me laugh.
ricky dedos Yes me too. Laughing out loud at all the rambling with ums and ems. At the end of a career you’d think someone would have learned how to lecture. Has he not heard of Toastmasters?
I'm listening to this because I'm fascinated by ancient history.
This is my favorite bed time story! put me to sleep like a baby(:
For those that prefer, you can change the video speed to 1.25 or 1.5x speed, and open the closed captioning.
Anyone here because they're genuinely interested in learning more?
I searched: "Lectures to fall asleep to". It's working.
Uhhhh...
I'm going through a VERY similar course right now... My teacher copied the first 35 minutes of this lecture and taught it to us...
Wonderful thought provoking lecture, thank you for sharing.
+Lilikate Buggins yes it is
Most classes also require you to read numerous articles, essay and/or books that will give you a full scope of the matter. These lectures are generally a nice (though not completely inclusive) condensation of the subject.
Uh...uh....uh..........uh..uh..........uh. College course Uh 101
Nope sorry most here to fall a sleep
Uh...
Fascinating lecture, thanks for posting!
Brilliant! I wish I could have this teacher.
the history of teaching world history. If I had paid for this course, I would have demanded my money back.
Boring? - no way! - the history teachers teaching history they had never studied, then the committees get into the act, then the textbook publishers ignoring the committee recommendations - a true saga of the American public school system at its worst - think of it as black comedy.
Okeh..
Are you being serious? Because if so, I agree
With the frizz? -no way!
I’m sorry. Idk why this popped up into my head
May I ask A question? What is an ice if i see eye. Si? Is sea the C 2 B or just The F?
How dare you sleep during my moment!
Professor, may I use the restroom?
17:08. Still no actual history being discussed.
Will continue tomorrow.
i chose this lecture for background noise, but i accidentally got really interested in what he was saying 💀 tell me more about these textbooks SIR!
Best nap I’ve had in a while
I want to sleep, but I somehow got engaged. I feel like I learned a lot lol
Thanks for the bedtime lecture😊
