    A metaphor is fitting. Awful parents have two kids, one they don’t care for and let do whatever(not raising them) and other is their favorite and they raise them using their bad parenting skills. The less cared about turns out better.

      @@capnbrunch9612 I agree with the first part that they actually have no incentive to try anymore because a lot of the 40K consumer base will just eat up whatever is brand new and put in front of them. They already changed how the sanguinary guard look compared to their previous models. If anything they have made them more dull and less unique they just look like Golden Space Marines with jump packs.

    The 40k aestetic for marines seems to be moving to more minimal and utilitarian designs but honestly, 40k is pretty over the top to begin with. It's not utilitarian or "realistic", so why not go for it with the model designs?

    It's a running joke that the AoS sculptors have more fun and get to flex more while the 40k sculptors are mostly restrained.
    So many of the new Stormcast models are better space marines than a lot of the recent space marine releases with just the tiniest bit of conversion, it's wild how uninspiring the 40k sculpts feel compared to AoS.

    The new Sanguinary Guard is shit. Its puzzling how they managed to fuck it up that much

  • @Karloss00
    @Karloss00 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

    The problem isn't the sculpt, as it is well done, however the problem is that it's safe; I think the better comparison would be with Saint Celestine of the Sisters of Battle. Both the original models are angelic beings in golden armour floating above the ground anchored with parchment. Celestine however got a much more involved upgrade in comparison with being depicted as flying above the battlefield. trailing parchment and accompanied by both doves and two battle sisters with her blade drawn and newly added wings outstretched. The Sanguinor on the other hand merely got a plastic update where the wings were simplified, reduced detail on the armour (They stole his nips!) and the death mask looks a little off with the addition of the chin strap and tubes.
    Age of Sigmar can get away with being adventurous with their models are they're often the first sculpt of that unit or they've been around for 20+ years (and likely just getting re-released for Old World). That said Games-Workshop in general have a problem with pendulem swinging between putting too much detail into a model (Most of the early Age of Sigmar models) or going too far on striping the detail (Inquisitor Coteaz a prime example). This might be a reaction to trying to please both old and new players, after all less detail means an easier time painting the model for beginners but can ostracize older players who prefer the older, more detailed models to the newer, cleaner sculpts; even then it's not often fans both old and knew agree when a sculpt doesn't work.
    This was a time they could've pushed the boat out as they reeled these models in too far.

    40k fans hate change while at the same time asking for changes. If they try a new approach to an old model, they will get backlash. However if they stay true to an old model, they will get backlash by the same people. Meanwhile, in AoS they have more freedom to be creative and flex their capabilities which is obvious when you look at the centerpieces and the quality of sculpts they create now.

    I don't know who is in charge with design at games workshop. But it just seems like they have their remedial team on the 40K side and their elite top team on the age of sigmar side. Because their recent plastics for 40K have been mostly misses instead of hits while a lot of the new storm cast eternals have shown what the Marines especially the blood angels could have been.

    • @Hobby_Swamp
      @Hobby_Swamp  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It all just feels kinda safe doesn’t it? Like they’re timid to go outside of the box they made. I think the dark angels stuff was pretty on-point, but the blood angels are a miss. I wanna hear from some BA player and see what they’re feelin.

      @noblegalifreyan4551 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@Hobby_Swamp if anything the new blood angel stuff is not them being timid it's them basically doing the bare minimum. The same one area guard are an atrocious step in whatever direction they're going. The old sanguinary guard had character had detail that people enjoy. People are always demanding new scopes when a current range is 5 plus years old for some reason. It's why I'm not very optimistic for any new guard regiments they bring out because they pretty much water down everything into generic looking stuff.

    Sang should have wing option and have single jump pack nozzle on just like Astorath so accommodate them. Helmets should be more death mask open face rather than basic Storm cast sculpts.

    Maybe the artists stuck doing marine shit just don't care and aren't the most skilled/popular/well-connected artists at GW. Think about it. You're an artist, all artists love to do the most creative things possible. We all know that space marines are pretty restricted creativily for a whole host of reasons. Doesn't mean you can't still make great models, but if I were an artist i wouldn't be happy being assigned "space marine variant #12" while others get to do crazy and different stuff with, for example, AdMech or Orks, or be on the fantasy side where the everything is up for reinterpretation constantly. Could be you are stuck doing red space marines while more skilled artists make a name for themselves, move up the company hierarchy, and can pick their assignments, no wonder they would jump to AoS if the design doc says "we are refreshing this factions range. Go crazy"

    I think its kinda just a reflection of what is encouraged by the profit motive. Capitalism and Art in general don't work together great, its just better to produce the same proven thing over and over again. Its just way to risky to allow artists to use all their creativity, so the 40k team probably has a lot more restrictions in what they can do, while the AoS team is allowed to try more crazy stuff, since its not as profitable anyway. It's the same with other artistic media too, like movies and videogames.
    Star Wars is a good example, the new shows/movies are almost universally disliked. But then they create andor, a show no one had any expectations for, about a characters most people forgot about anyway. So the creators probably had a lot more freedom and made one of the best shows i've ever watched.
