I rewatched the fight scene and his hat was eaten with him. So, I doubt the Grimm would've spat the singular hat out. Since it wouldn't make sense to do so if the only thing moving would've been Roman. If the wasn't digested or harmed in any way, and was found completely fine. What's to say Roman isn't either?
Plus how would the hat get out unless the Grimm was killed? Neo obviously didn't find the cane. If Roman got out its most likely his cane would've been in his grip and his hat blown away. Cue Neo finding it and thinking he's dead
Roman was such a good villain and one of the reasons I kept watching rwby during volumes one and two. I really hope they do his character justice by passing his story down to Neo. I feel like they had a deeper connection than they are letting on.
I'll be honest, Salem doesn't bother me because she was around since episode 1 (She was narrating, so basically the big bad was telling us the story since the beginning) and was planned from the beginning ( I think they said she was like the 5th or 6th character created) and I feel like we'll slowly get to know more about her. The wilderness seemed like it was still dangerous, but we just didn't see as much of it because Qrow was killing most of the Grimm near team RNJR and they just plain didn't show us that (which they should've, but I don't think they retconned it.) And I thought the new Weiss trailer had good animation and the choreography was better than volume 4 (That isn't hard, but at least its improving, hopefully we can get it back up to v3 standards at least, hopefully more like v1 and v2 but that's doubtful.) But other than that I'd be inclined to agree with those points. Volume 4 had so many problems.
Soarel To be fair, Monty was the one that made Roman the main antagonist for the first two volumes. That wasn't exactly a quick process, so we can assume the choice to add Roman to the show was made pretty quickly into the show's conception. Also, Monty wasn't going to have Roman die in volume 3. In fact, the whole "airship fight scene" wasn't even in Monty's original script.
Agent Washington Yea, the only thing Monty had to do with that whole scene was some of Roman and Neo's attacks that he helped animate out way before they even knew what they were going to do with said moves and that part of the plot.
I'm really surprised that everyone in the comments thinks it was a mistake to get rid of Roman, when I truly think it was a good narrative choice. If he had stayed alive, he would have been made irrelevant and nonthreatening by the increasing scale of the story post-V3. He worked for Cinder, not for Salem, and his usefulness to her was his power in the criminal underbelly of Vale ("My dad always said, if you need to know a city, ask the rats"). He had no reason to make the trek to Mistral (or Menagerie), and extra reason to stay far away from Atlas. This makes him absolutely irrelevant to the story post-V3, and it would have been hard to justify any further screen time for him. But why kill him instead of just dropping him from the story? Well, his death served multiple narrative purposes: driving home the threat of the grimm (he's the first on-screen casualty to the grimm and easily the most important character to die that way); driving home the fact that grimm don't give a shit who you are or what your allegiances are, if you're human or faunus you're food; giving our heroes a victory that they sorely needed at the time; and giving Neo a vendetta against our protagonists, which gives her a real character motivation and reason to stay in the story. Roman got to die in an impactful scene at the height of his villainy instead of fading into obscurity, which I think does his character justice.
Good point. But, still, his charisma would help give the other villains a much human personality. After Roman they just became dark serious and kinda gods(empty characters with a lot of power).
I agree that Roman wouldn't have any relevance beyond volume 3 but his death is some of laziest writing I've ever seen. When a villain dies their death should have some impact on the main character that makes them think differently, but in ruby's case the only thing she learns is that if she blindly rushes in without caring about the consequences some miracle will happen and everything will be alright.
And to be fair I can’t see him playing a part in Salem’s grand plan. He was a thorn to ruby rose but I was disappointed that the larger impact he had was to neo only when any of the main characters could have learned basic huntsman skills in catching thieves from him. I’m just sad overall on how much potential there was to the villains and heroes.
The biggest issue is that he represents a different type of energy that a lot of people miss from the show. While he was on screen he was bombastic, charismatic, and entertaining to watch toy with the main characters. The other villains, (with the exception of Tyrian, since he's kind of fun), never come close to his level of stage presence. Unimportant as he was, he was fun to have around, while most of the other villains just aren't.
This man was clearly not happy with Cinder using him, so it would have been cool to have him, not joining the main cast, but working in a moral grey to fuck Salem's plans.
Somewhere deep down I feel like Die is a inner child of Roman being pessimistic about life and wants to survive but willing to do that, he needs to trust the people he calls enemies that are hard to trust. One Thing does have references to Die.

When he was in the mech during season 2, painting the town red (I forgot which episode number it was), Sun was yelling to Blake's scroll, "It didn't eat him, he's inside of it like he's controlling it or something!" It may or may not have been a foreshadow idk.

The fact that this is like an evil red like roses alt makes it feel like we havent seen the last of him, maybe he’ll be back more powerful since he’d probably unlock his semblance to save himself, but could end up helping ruby and the others to kill salem since like he said “i cant afford to lose” the world ending would mean he would lose a lot so he’d probably make a truce

Like sure Main Villian is flying off the airship like Neo in Volume 3 but I would've like it if he was reoccuring rival like say Emerald, Neptune and whoever else is in Salems Legion of Doom (For lack of a better name)
I understand why people are sad that he got killed off, scoundrel type characters are always awesome (when fine well, which he was) but here's a question: what would have happened to him if he had survived the battle? Cinder used him because he was the expert on Vale's underworld, on Mercury's advice, he was a tool in her plans there, and nothing more. The White Fang were kept around because they were an international organization that Adam still had influence in, they could still be leveraged for effect, but Roman probably doesn't have much in the way of contacts outside of Vale, he wasn't a criminal kingpin, he was a smalltime thief that happened to be extremely skilled and clever. Even more, the things that Cinder had him doing are suicide for someone who wants to stick around, he couldn't afford to piss her off, but he knew that once he started helping her, his place in Vale was gone, notoriety is useful for gangs and mafia, it's the worst thing a survivor/thief like him can get, it only draws heat. (note for these I'm assuming that the rest of the battle went pretty much the same as his previous encounters, Ruby runs him off but realizes that the rest of the battle is too important to chase after him) Best case scenario, she drops him and he has to try and survive in the ruins of Vale, avoiding Grimm and huntsmen, and anyone else who knows who he is. Especially anyone who knows he was involved in the attack. Alternate scenario, Cinder tries to kill her new loose end via Emerald and Mercury, but Neo finds him and they both run away, leading to basically the same as the above. Worst case scenario, she succeeds in having him killed. In none of these do I really see him showing up again as anything more than a background event. I'm sure if Rooster Teeth had kept him they could come up with something, but if you ask me he was doomed from the moment he threw in his lot with Cinder.
While he was a doomed character (by the writers own admission); he has a level of quality that isn't really shown through the current rwby villain cast and I think that is why people are still attached to him and Neo. Roman had motivations, character and style. Compare that to Salem's crew: Hazel is a child in a giant's body, Tyrian is your typical "fill the crazy trope" villain, Watts *tries* to be Roman with a superiority complex and Cinder has proven to be the cockroach of remnant. All of them lack one of the aforementioned qualities or it is just meaningless word games to seem deeper than reality in the case of Cinder. The largest part to lack here however is character. Tyrian, Hazel and Watts have only shown their ability to sit at a table and get up to do fights on Salem's behalf. Each have 1 thing they want in life and that sums their existence. There is nothing there to dig into.
I initially saw his potential being the obstacle for ruby to conquer BEFORE the fall of beacon. How interesting could he have been with the “criminal vs huntress” dynamic? We could have gotten moments where ruby was outsmarted by a criminal just for the simple reason she’s not skilled enough I saw better pacing for the plot if Ruby vs Roman was the first challenge ruby has to face to prove she can become a huntress. When Roman is bested by ruby after at least a few volumes of Roman either beating her or escaping custody it feels like an achievement to ruby. Like how you beat the hardest challenge in any video game. After ruby defeating Roman he’s imprisoned and the audience can now remember him as a villain who proved his wits beat ruby many times. But right as we celebrate Ruby’s victory over Roman we get the fall of beacon, a reveal to the hardest challenge rwby has to face, Salem. Or at least that could be my own pacing for the story. Sorry if it seems too long to fit into more than 3 or 4 volumes but I really value how Salem and her villains should be looked at, as the people who took out an entire kingdom when the huntsmen were busy catching thieves.
Heinrich Gerboth agree. When I first saw Roman's death in Vol. 3 I was thinking, nah, there is no way he is dead but when it was confirmed that he died, I got really disappointed and pretty angry since he still has so much potential and was honestly the best villain. I felt like they should of done what RWBY henceforth done and have him survive that event and have him comeback stronger and more deadly then ever.
He really wasn't that amazing. So yeah, you got to let go and move on, any charachter can die at any moment, nobody is safe, is what all that means. Maybe Roman wasn't as well written as you thought. Maybe they did not come up with future plans for him.

Great song Roman is by far the best villain in my opinion next to Neo it was sad how he went but maybe rwby can live through Neo since everyone else is super flat and boring (in my opinion) and all of the story went down the drain hopefully they flesh out Roman and Neos backstory that the only reason I kept watching past season 4 and god did they ruin Adam so I wish them luck

I understand why people are sad that he got killed off, scoundrel type characters are always awesome (when fine well, which he was) but here's a question: what would have happened to him if he had survived the battle? Cinder used him because he was the expert on Vale's underworld, on Mercury's advice, he was a tool in her plans there, and nothing more. The White Fang were kept around because they were an international organization that Adam still had influence in, they could still be leveraged for effect, but Roman probably doesn't have much in the way of contacts outside of Vale, he wasn't a criminal kingpin, he was a smalltime thief that happened to be extremely skilled and clever. Even more, the things that Cinder had him doing are suicide for someone who wants to stick around, he couldn't afford to piss her off, but he knew that once he started helping her, his place in Vale was gone, notoriety is useful for gangs and mafia, it's the worst thing a survivor/thief like him can get, it only draws heat.
(note for these I'm assuming that the rest of the battle went pretty much the same as his previous encounters, Ruby runs him off but realizes that the rest of the battle is too important to chase after him)
Best case scenario, she drops him and he has to try and survive in the ruins of Vale, avoiding Grimm and huntsmen, and anyone else who knows who he is. Especially anyone who knows he was involved in the attack.
Alternate scenario, Cinder tries to kill her new loose end via Emerald and Mercury, but Neo finds him and they both run away, leading to basically the same as the above.
Worst case scenario, she succeeds in having him killed.
In none of these do I really see him showing up again as anything more than a background event. I'm sure if Rooster Teeth had kept him they could come up with something, but if you ask me he was doomed from the moment he threw in his lot with Cinder.
While he was a doomed character (by the writers own admission); he has a level of quality that isn't really shown through the current rwby villain cast and I think that is why people are still attached to him and Neo. Roman had motivations, character and style.
Compare that to Salem's crew: Hazel is a child in a giant's body, Tyrian is your typical "fill the crazy trope" villain, Watts *tries* to be Roman with a superiority complex and Cinder has proven to be the cockroach of remnant. All of them lack one of the aforementioned qualities or it is just meaningless word games to seem deeper than reality in the case of Cinder.
The largest part to lack here however is character. Tyrian, Hazel and Watts have only shown their ability to sit at a table and get up to do fights on Salem's behalf. Each have 1 thing they want in life and that sums their existence. There is nothing there to dig into.
I initially saw his potential being the obstacle for ruby to conquer BEFORE the fall of beacon. How interesting could he have been with the “criminal vs huntress” dynamic? We could have gotten moments where ruby was outsmarted by a criminal just for the simple reason she’s not skilled enough
I saw better pacing for the plot if Ruby vs Roman was the first challenge ruby has to face to prove she can become a huntress. When Roman is bested by ruby after at least a few volumes of Roman either beating her or escaping custody it feels like an achievement to ruby. Like how you beat the hardest challenge in any video game.
After ruby defeating Roman he’s imprisoned and the audience can now remember him as a villain who proved his wits beat ruby many times. But right as we celebrate Ruby’s victory over Roman we get the fall of beacon, a reveal to the hardest challenge rwby has to face, Salem.
Or at least that could be my own pacing for the story. Sorry if it seems too long to fit into more than 3 or 4 volumes but I really value how Salem and her villains should be looked at, as the people who took out an entire kingdom when the huntsmen were busy catching thieves.

Such an ignominious death for my favorite villain in western anime. It wasn't even story convenient, either...
Soarel they were the shining, dominant villains of the first three seasons, and Roman was especially prominent and original. WHY
It was, though. He'd served his purpose - in-universe and out - and as far as Salem's faction is concerned, that makes one disposable.

When I first saw Roman's death in Vol. 3 I was thinking, nah, there is no way he is dead but when it was confirmed that he died, I got really disappointed and pretty angry since he still has so much potential and was honestly the best villain. I felt like they should of done what RWBY henceforth done and have him survive that event and have him comeback stronger and more deadly then ever.

He really wasn't that amazing. So yeah, you got to let go and move on, any charachter can die at any moment, nobody is safe, is what all that means. Maybe Roman wasn't as well written as you thought. Maybe they did not come up with future plans for him.

Great song Roman is by far the best villain in my opinion next to Neo it was sad how he went but maybe rwby can live through Neo since everyone else is super flat and boring (in my opinion) and all of the story went down the drain hopefully they flesh out Roman and Neos backstory that the only reason I kept watching past season 4 and god did they ruin Adam so I wish them luck
Hey I support you on that too. I definitely recommend thinking and/or writing what rwby COULD have been. Takes your mind off the sad truth that the writers paced the plot too fast to redeem it.
