It's easier to replace the starter if you take the splash plate off the frame. It gives you alot more room to work.

Did you short out the battery, should be mounted the other way the cross piece may short the battery.
You put the old battery the right way.

Clicking was the solenoid. Starter or battery connections had to be cleaned up. Or you bought a pooched starter
It was likely the wire coming from the solenoid for the starter shorting out somewhere...i had this exact issue with my 87 yamaha moto 4 225.

Yeh owner said to change the starte delay and the battery is not working
You can hook 12v power to the starter Directly and see if it spins. If so then it’s in the wiring/switch
