    Great advice there. Couldn't have put it better myself. May I just add one thing?
    Never underprice your work. No matter how desperate you are. If you start out with cheap prices it takes years to get away from them as people don't like big increases in price. I basically had to change my full customer base about ten years ago as I was working for too little and doing too many favours because i just liked doing the job. Unfortunately you just end up broke.

      I was charging the rate I wanted for years and made the poor mistake of giving my supervisor a 50% discount trying to be nice, he then went on to tell everyone and it's been 3 years now of people asking for that price.

    Hi Oscar, I really enjoyed this new video format. I have been watching and following your videos for a while now, and found them really interesting and easy to understand. Showing how your day pans out as a detailer is very interesting and helpful to me. Thanks.
    As a footnote. I wanted to turn my car cleaning hobby into a business. I spoke to all my friends, tried to get word of mouth business, left business cards in cafe's etc., all with little or no result.
    I had a facebook business page that I thought was ok (I am no IT guru), got a few likes, but not much work. Then I placed 2 adds on facebook at the start of the Carona outbreak, got heaps of calls, now I cannot finish a job before someone asks me for a price to clean their car. Thanks again for your help and inspiration to get this dream of mine to something that can work for me.

    I carry 2 hammers with me one is a california framing hammer with a waffle iron head. It cost 30 bucks. The other one is a cheap Ikea hammer thay cost 2 bucks. When i get asked by potential customers what products i use and they say "well so and so uses this or that" i walk them over to my truck and hand them both hammers. I ask them if they think that if they use the California framing hamer that suddenly they can build something better then if i gave the Ikea one to Bob Villa...........i have done this about 30ish times and have gained 30ish new customers. And it is tremendously rewarding to see the gears CLICK in their heads.

    another problem is too, that some people get into detailing not knowing what detailing actually is they are more "car washers" than detailers. They are more focused on the money then quality of work.

    Yo Oscar! I know the struggle of keeping your vehicle clean while your working as a detailer! And love your vids! One small tip I would be for you is to paint your van wheels with either plasti-dip paint and make a video! (More content) or just straight black, just makes it look that much cleaner! Thanks for the free courses my man! Your the best!

    When you first launch a detailing business, you can't expect to generate emails and phone calls on a daily basis. These are unrealistic expectations. Developing a detailing business takes time and you have to be patient, and it will not happen overnight. It could take one several years to develop some form of consistency. Business has its ups and downs, so realize that from the outset.

    • @chromo48
      @chromo48 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. When starting out, the best resource is simply knowing people or knowing people who know a lot of people AND are willing to sort of help you get the word out. Not everyone has a network like that, but if you do then you have a definite advantage.

    Yo! I started a Mobile car wash as a part time gig, I got ads on Facebook & IG . Some auto detailers are giving me a hard time cause it’s a Waterless car wash, I put it my two cents to some messages but just realized I’m just trying to make $ just like them. I blocked them, best luck to them. Cruising in my own lane! Great Videos homie! Keep up the great work!

  • @sirwooley
    @sirwooley ปีที่แล้ว

    I just wanted to add a counterargument to what you're saying at your second point. While yes, you're right that often people spend too much time watching youtube vids or about learning how to be a detailer, and usually end up not getting anything done despite spending their entire day "working", I'd say that learning how to detail correctly is actually super important. The problem is they watch these videos of super gross cars getting done and then they think they have to cover every square inch of vehicle, all while doing so on one of these scam "$500 detailing business!" lies that a lot of youtubers like to promote. So they think they have to do a $600-800 detailing service, while they have no skills or knowledge of technique, with $500 of equipment and chemicals for a full detail. Sorry but learning how to detail, and having a process that they can replicate consistently, while being clear on the services they can offer is way more vital than building leads IMO. Before you ever start a detailing business, you should be doing all of this groundwork, developing your skill set. Generating leads then doing either a shitty service for too much money, or charging too little money for the time you spent doing that service, is a quick way to burn yourself out or to not get repeat business. THEN you need to learn accounting, you need to learn marketing, you need to learn how to build a funnel/marketing strategy, you need to learn customer service skills, you need to learn how to manage your overhead, you need to have a business plan or at the very least learn your KPI's. Because guess what, if it takes you 16 hours to do what should take 2, then you're never going to be profitable, nor will you be able to get 2 or 3 clients a day. I know you've said these things in other videos, I love that you're one of the few people that are honest about what goes into this field, but I don't think marketing or generating leads is step one.
