    NES roms has multiple files too, those just got merged into a single file, that's why those roms need headers, not just identify the mappers but also to identify where each data parts starts and ends inside the file

    Thank you for making this video. I am a huge SNK fan...fanatic. I have a Neo Geo AES "White Box" in mint condition. I also have an MVS Candy Cab running in my home. As a huge Neo Geo fan, I want others to experience the games for themselves. Not everyone is going to want to plunk $750+ dollars for single AES carts. You should also touch base on Super Guns as they at least to me are the best bang for your money.

    Great Video!! I recently sold a Neo SD AES and bought an AES 161-in-1. Both are excellent for what they do. Neo SD is absolutely fantastic for having every game. The 161-in-1 is great for instant loading & also some games have both MVS intros with music (I.e. Garou, Last Blade 2) (something not possible on Neo SD if you have regular bios, as playing original roms in MVS mode having intro sound is a hardware setting).
    The SD Pro looks to be better than both though. Haven't seen a detailed video on it before!

    Great video. I love flash carts, I just absolutely can’t stomach the $400-600 price tag for these. A good option for original hardware if you don’t want to pay that much is to get a 161-1 multicart and unibios 4.0. The pick-n-mix feature allows changing between games easily and is a lot more affordable.

      The PSP has an impressive NeoGeo emulator, but the roms take some work to setup for it. The same emu author made CPS1, CPS2, & NeoCD emulators, which you can find bundled together with the NeoGeo emu. They use MAME roms, include the tools to edit the roms, support MAME command list for in-game move lists, support homebrew & decrypted roms, and on NeoCD, supports MP3 audio (saves space). V2.3.5 is the latest version that I am aware of.
      I definitely recommend the slim models over the original fat model due to the increased RAM from 32MB to 64MB. The fat model uses different versions of the emulators (except CPS1), requires larger cache files to be made for NeoGeo games, cache files for CPS2 games (not required on slim models), a plain looking menu for selecting games, & poorer overall compatibility. I have tested all of of these things that I am telling you, very thoroughly on a per-game basis.
      I hope you or someone finds this info, useful.

    Excellent video! I have a NeoSD AES that I got from Stone Age Gamer and it's awesome but the cartridge has a really tight fit on my Neo Geo AES, and it feels like I could brake it when taking it out. Granted, once I placed the Micro SD card with all the ROMs in it, I don't really need to take the NeoSD AES out of the console often. Does your NeoSD AES also have a tight fit on your Neo Geo AES as well?

It’s a rip-off of the the low-key version you might hear while Eddie Murphy’s character sneaks around and investigates in Beverly Hills Cop. Compare to the original Axel F theme.

    Hi Rob, thank you for this very good and informative video. I bought the NeoSD Pro (AES) as soon as it was available, and I have a little question: it is possible that it draws a bit more current than a standard Neo-Geo AES cartridge? I ask that because I have zero problems with my AES carts, even the bigger ones, but *very rarely* and *very randomly* if I load a game with the Neo SD Pro, some graphical glitches do appear. The same graphical glitches that usually happens on the AES when one uses a not powerful enough AC/DC adapter or has some power problems. It seems to be more frequent on the RAM slot. I am still waiting for the capacitor set to renew my AES, I'll see if that makes a difference.

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think those glitches are a known issue. The original Neo SD did it and it was fixed relatively quickly via firmware. My Pro did it too, but power cycling fixed it. Some notes:
      - My AES is recapped and I'm using a brand new Triad 3.5a PSU. Should be more than enough.
      - The "graphical glitches" were major, not little quirks. In my opinion, that's a GOOD thing: See the glitch right as the game boots, hit reset, all done. In contrast, I saw no glitches that appears after it was powered on for a bit, only stuff that showed up immediately, thereby not affecting gameplay.
      Does that just up line up with what you saw, or are you noticing other glitches?

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a 3-5 AES sent to me because of graphical glitches on scaled sprites in “certain games,” notably, the owner’s copy of the original Fatal Fury. The owner assumed it was the AES since his copy of the game didn’t do it in his other consoles (he had more than one). At first it didn’t seem to do it on my 3-6 console either.
      The speckles seems to go away when I ran his 9v console on lower and lower voltages but I soon realized that the most notable speckles were on the Fatal Fury logo before it scales up to the title screen. Sure enough, there were speckles there on my console too. I bought a copy of Fatal Fury for myself and the speckles were gone no matter which power supply or console I used.
      No doubt, it’s still power-related but I suspect there’s something wrong with the cartridge and not the console. Similarly, I’ve seen reports about the 161-in-1 having scaling issues in some games without power or diode mods.

    • @79Tiamat
      @79Tiamat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroRGBsimilar scenario for me (minus the recap for now). I must add that when the glitches happen, in my case they are always in the first layer, the one used for example for titles, scores, "Player 2 press start" etc. Also the very first Neo-geo logo is corrupted. The rest of the graphic is perfectly fine. But I also just recently found out that if I don't insert the NeoSD cart right to the bottom of the AES slot, but *just* a little less, the corruption disappears (with original carts no problem, no matter how they are inserted). So maybe is more of a mechanical issue, not a power one.

    • @79Tiamat
      @79Tiamat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emmettturner9452 in the case of the Neo SD Pro and my AES (3-6) combination I now suspect there is a *really slight* mechanical tolerance problem, that with original Neo carts I have is not there. As I said in the other comment, if I don't fully and firmly plug the Neo SD pro right to the bottom of the slot, but just a tiny little bit less (I mean *a very little* less), the problem seems to never present itself. I'll recap the AES anyway.

      @qwertylesh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      our neo geos are very very old hardware, have you had yours recapped at all? it could be surface mount power regulation does not work as effectively as its meant to, and the multicarts probably do have a slightly higher energy footprint compared to a standard eprom based cart.

    The best way for me is on the AES a Super MVS Converter with MVS games on it. Have alot of MVS carts and 9 out of 10 i play Metal Slug games and Shmups. Have only 1 original AES Dogtag game Last Resort. For me the Neo Geo is always the Metal Slug games 1, 2, X and 3. Last Resort is a great Shmup to play with 2 players than the far difficult Pulstar.

But Terraonion also has some isn't exactly a trustworthy manufacturer/seller and have had, and acted on, a illegal ToS within the EU (where they are based). And if you have a secondary market for fixing flaws of your electronics design you obviously have issues, especially if you refuse the help of exactly the people that are fixing your work...

      I tested with both the firmware that shipped with the AES cart (the one that EVERYONE who bought an AES cart is using) AND re-tested my boot measurements with the latest beta firmware. Load times might be a few seconds off, but this video is a solid representation of what the cart is like...which I thought was good!

  • @Pykeer
    @Pykeer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The load times on NeoSD really sucks! The waiting time to load a game makes the AES looks like a Neo Geo CD. If you like to play different games from time to time, be prepare to wait a lot between each game. The curious thing is: If you have a Neo Geo CD with a SD loader installed, you get lower loading times in general changing games than on NeoSD

    How do these Mvs carts compare to existing 161 in one carts you can find for $130??

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The older 161'in'1's run at the wrong voltage and can damage your console. The newer ones aren't as scary, but it's still apples and oranges: A low quality multi cart with bad audio issues, vs two devices that can play the entire library exactly as accurate as the originals. Fair question, but not even close to the same thing.

    Christ, I don't think I will ever have the money spare to buy one of these things. The $AU is just too crap these days, and being € for some options makes it even worse as the dollar has never been worth more than €.66.
    I would love to have a ROM cart so I don't have to use my originals carts, but unless a far cheaper option comes along, I cannot see it happening. I would be able to buy 2 or 4 NG games for the price which makes it even harder to justify to myself. Or a bunch of Famicom, MEGA DRIVE, PC Engine, Saturn and SuFami games, for that matter. I guess I could sell a spare AES console...

  • @plasia

    I know you're trying to be on the fence, but objectively (in my mind at least) the Darksoft Multi is better. $40 more for faster loading of new games and the ability to swap between 3 easily, as well as no serial number closed off firmware nonsense.

      You can all feel free to argue away about this, but I'm not going to respond, as this has been discussed to death: Everdrives and the carts in the video are all fine and there's no realistic chance of harm to your consoles...but these Neo Geo and NES x-in-1 carts WILL kill your consoles and I've already had friends' MV1C's (as well as NES consoles) die as a result.
      It's your choice to use them, but don't tell other people to do so, without telling them it'll kill their consoles.

    if I ever get into neo geo i'm going hold off from all of these products. The Price of these are stupid high... like they're overcharging customers just because they can. The load times seem ridiculous. Still leaves more room for other competition.

    The only problem with these are the price. Seriosuly i bought an cmvs for 200 these are atleast twice that, sure its flashcart but thats just a bit out there id happily pay 200-250 for one at most.

      They are expensive but they are also substantially more involved than the "mainstream" consoles. Replicating NeoGeo carts vs replicating a NES or Genesis requires considerably more power and storage. Just consider the size of the games themselves. NES games coming in at hundreds of kb or a few mb. Versus the NeoGeo having 768mb officially. But I absolutely understand that a lower price would be easier to handle.

  • @johandenhertog6878

    So expensive is’t because you get a converter and play cheap MVS carts on the AES. Do that since 2006. Have the Super MVS Converter V2 on my Neo Geo AES. The Multigame 161 IN 1 works perfect on it. Play the Metal Slug games and Shmups on it. Have 1 mint AES US Dogtag Last Resort game. And 9 US MVS carts Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3. Shock Troopers, Magician Lord, Viewpoint, Pulstar and Blazing Star.

    There is no reason these multicarts should be that bloody expensive. The components involved in making them dont come even close to justify 400-600 dollars.

      not worth it is a flash cart ! not a original game i rather buy 1 neogeo game for 450$ like sonic wings 2 for the aes and let sonic wings increase it price value on your collection or closet
      with a flash cart you cant do that.and it will get cheaper after new versions or updates releases people are getting ripoff here
      ...the neogeo flash cart should be less no more 130$ dollars..but..450$ ?

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In short, the parts that are needed to make this cost MUCH more than the parts needed to make ROM carts for other consoles like Genesis or SNES. Hopefully the prices will come down at some point though.

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In short: because it’s niche and the disparity between the costs of legitimately playing those games on original hardware without it is even greater... despite the higher price.
      Yes, it’s also significantly more complex than your usual flashcart.

      In addition to the existing answers:
      100x as many snes consoles sold over AES, so smaller market.
      NeoGeo owners are more hardcore collectors, and are willing to pony up for accessories

    "ROM cart" -- Please stop calling it that.
    Sorry. You run a knowledge repository and this is spreading. These are flash carts that load ROM *files* from SD card (flash) media. In some cases, they even use RAM to simulate the ROM of an original - so "ROM" applies more to the original cart than a cart with no ROM at all.
    Standard game carts contain ROM chips.
    Dumped data from ROM chips are called "ROM files."
    An original cartridge is a "ROM cart." Applying that name to a cartridge that loads ROM files is full circle and confusing (or inaccurate in the case of flash carts that use RAM).

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's a cart that loads roms.

    • @jevansturner

      RetroRGB it's a cart that loads ROM *files* - a standard cart loads ROM data from its own ROM chips. You run a knowledge repository (thanks so much for that!). Misinformation and inaccurate definitions will grow legs and spread. Nobody wants that.

      @@jevansturner yeah make it more confusing by using multiple names depending on the capability and hardware design! The NeoSD is a FlashCart! The Darksoft cart is a RAMCart! The NeoSD Pro is a FlashROMRAMCart. It just rolls right off the tongue. People new to the devices will have no problem following that at all.

    • @jevansturner
      @jevansturner 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Captain Falcon those are all still flash carts because they load from SD (flash media) -- even the ones that load into RAM.
