I remember when I first saw this ages ago I loved it but rewatching it so many years later it is great to see how beautifully shot it is and so so very exciting!
This movie helped usher in a new era in horror films that went into the 1930`s 🎥with the famous movies that came in that era and helped to end the era of the short films.
I saw this movie on Creature Features on KTVU 2 back in the day. They showed the silent version, the 1944 version with Claude Raines, and the 1962 version with Herbert Lom.
I watched the first half of this film in around 2002 at a downtown screening of silent movies for Halloween. At the point where Christine rips the Phantom's mask off, we had to leave because it was getting late. Finally watching the rest!
I've been a long time horror and film fan. Seen lots of flicks even Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Always seemed to miss this one. I knew who Lon Cheney is of course. What a great film! For when it was made it's a masterpiece, and even now it holds up quite well. It makes me want to read the book it was based on to get more details.
Thank you for posting this one. This is the one that has the background music that fits it so perfectly. I've been looking for it for some time. It's suitably creepy like the movie itself.
Thanks for this this movie is a classic and though today the phantom dose not look scary scary back then he was terrifying and made people faint sure his face is shocking but after a while think I’d get used to it
Some little facts their is a lake under the opera house also. a chandelier did crash killing one person and their was a singer called Christine so maybe The phantom is based on a tie story but they never found the phantoms remains
I found the organ accompaniment very tedious, often at odds with the plot and lacking the appropriate tension. Zamecnik, Borch, Ketelbey and others wrote far more interesting music for the silent cinema - and I had difficulty identifying the Faust scenes as Gounod's.
I like how this video's quality isn't overly cleaned up with made-up colors and other overly modern touches.
this is the most loyal movie to the book asides from the ending...not to gatekeep, but i loved the book ending so much

I saw this on Creature Features on KTVU 2 in San Francisco.

16:13 The score is so beautiful. This organ score is my favorite out of all of them. So lovely
