Let it be known that Hawa presented to BA a fully realized pitch for a segment called Hawa At Large, where she would make African dishes and talk to guests about African cuisines and cultures. Not only they rejected her pitch, they used a photo of her with the BA chefs for diversity points, shot three videos with her AND paid her only $400 for each video. She’s since sworn off of working with BA ever again, and we all missed out on her radiant screen presence and African recipes. Shame on you BA.

So when are we gonna start acknowledging that Hawa was only paid $400 for appearing in this video, that the EIC Adam Rappoport wore brown face, doesn't pay the POC editors who show up on camera for their appearances at ALL while paying the white editors (according to Sohla), and that BA has a huge systemic racism problem????? Especially in America, African Americans were employed in “undesirable” positions such as line cook and chef because these are ere the only jobs available for them. Fast forward a several decades and you are hard pressed to find a person of color - let alone Black person to be in a upscale or high class kitchen. People of color worked so hard to keep those jobs in the past and now they are working even hard to be let into some these areas.

something I love about Bon Appetit is that they introduce me to new food. I've never had Somalian food, but it's clear that I'm missing out. It's one of the few videos that I think I'm going to go out of my way to make this recipe--ESPECIALLY with banana (I love sweet and salty, i feel it on a molecular level.) Please have her in more videos, she's an absolute angel and an informative cook!
