hopefully these would be "the flagship" models. But Toyota should highly consider that one of the fundamental characteristic of the 3 generations of the toyota MR2 is that it was it's affordability. 80K to 100K will be way too steep to maintain that affordability. Besides, didn't the 3 generations of the MR2 symbolized affordable fun cars to drive? One will bring up "get a miata" if you want an affordable small sports car. But the mid engine lay out of the MR2 makes it a better than the miata. As an autocrosser that owns a Gen 1, I will say that a small mid engine car (Toyota..LOL) is a lot more fun to drive than a MR small sports car. There's something "magical" about the feel of an MR car when you toss it around the course. "Dear Toyota please make the MR2 affordable to common people! I would like to get an affordable one to keep my Gen 1 MR2 company in my garage!"

04:23 How many total units now? Welp, my excitement for the MR2 can also be added to the list of things that stop inside the braking distance of the Cybertruck.
We need info directly from Toyota, as that is a ridiculously low and exclusive number units. I can't even fathom how a completely new platform, that won't cost $100k base, could ever be greenlit. The even stranger part, is how it is claimed that Toyota will use a gas ICE (likely that 3-pot as mentioned), as a way to prove ICE's are still relevant and exciting for sports car enthusiasts. Since this isn't even some new expensive technology, producing 300+hp, why would this not be available, with a $60-ish MSRP, for far more units? Thinking, a couple thousand. Not like, 100.
I would've expected to see this more as a base Corvette competitor, at a roughly equivalent price point. It's got a gasoline.engine and 300hp for god's sakes. $100-150k, base? Please.
Toyota is best to emulate the mid-engine Corvette with the new MR2 (or whatever the name will be). NOT the Lotus Emira, IMO.

When the ft1 model was made and propagated as the new supra, I was the happiest money saving planner on earth and was ready to buy one from a dealer as soon as they would come out. Then a completely ugly looking car emerged and I was thinking what the h is that? I read supra at the back so went 😱 nooo what happened to that beautiful image I had in mind??
Then Nissan came with 400z and I was thinking OK the car looks suitable for all ages, more elegant, 400hp this should make ttrs call 911 for help to pass it. Nop, ttrs sprint time remains unmatched, 2 more little seats for my kids, elegant, fast 2.5 400 hp that makes you feel you're in a lambo zoon without emptying your wallet on petrol..
I thought, sadly another disappointment from Japan..
Now, they're talking mr2, with a price tag for carrera 911? and new rx7 mazda and fed up with disappointments. 😤
Over priced, no 0-60 sprint competitiveness, looks strange?

Sports cars are not selling, havent been for over years. Toyota is losing money on them, in fact most manufacturers are losing money on them. The only reason they are still making them is to generate interest and excitement over the brand.....like a marketing ploy. Everybody loves them, but instead buy a truck or SUV here in the US. Abroad, sports cars are slapped with an import tax making them 3-5 times more expensive, yes, a $30k sports car like a GR86 would cost $30k here, but in some countries......they literally go for like $80,000. Even I had a sports car, but I drive it like once a week. The rest of the time, I drive my SUV. I got tired of paying insurance for it, so I sold it after a few years.

One of my most favourite cars that I owned was my 1985 MR2. I had it in my late teens early twenties. I think the product choices for this new one like potentially offering manual, gas only, and mid engine are perfect for a car like this. 2 things that i think would be mistakes for Toyota would be to 1) limiting the numbers and 2) making it a 3 cylinder. I think a big chunk of the target market for this car would be people such as myself (high income earning years with disposable income) So paying $70k would not be a problem. But I would not pay $70k for a 3 cylinder no matter how tuned up it is. For the North America market the 3 cylinder does not make sense in my opinion. The bigger mistake however, in my opinion would be making this in limited numbers so that it becomes a collectors only car. If this is a final "celebration" then build one for everyone who will buy one. The purpose of the halo car is to elevate the brand and build goodwill. Frustrating people who would like to buy this car with limits, dealer markups and making them impossible to get will do the opposite. Let Lexus have the collectors car. In the 2000s when Toyota stopped making sports cars I stopped buying Toyotas. I would probably have bought other Toyota SUVs etc if I didn't feel like the brand abandoned enthusiasts at the time. For this car I could come back to Toyota if they make it a true enthusiasts celebration car for people who will drive them, share them, enjoy them, show them. To do this you need to be able to buy one without feeling like you got screwed. When you buy one of these cars you want to feel like Toyota appreciates your business and the enthusiast buyer. The current trend of screwing enthusiasts by making special models impossible to get unless you are a rich collector is harming car culture.

320hp and 1300kg is a bit ridiculous though for 80k but I guess the flagship car always needs to be heavy. You can get similar specs from a jailbroken volkswagen gti though. Other than that it’s a good time to be alive as a car enthusiast so long as you’re young and rich, and can drive well, which very few people are lol. I really hope it also doesn’t look like a ferrari or nsx, I genuinely would not mind if they used the tailights from the yaris lol. I secretly hope it borrows the 90s supra tailight design. And production numbers really need to be atleast 8k imo. Also 1.6 litres for a flagship is ridiculous as well lol they need to do something about that

Another thanks to Toyota for proving people why we need ICEs, we love driving and we love a fun car!
I think they are killing two birds with one stone since they are thankfully snobbing EVs and at the same time, they are also proving to the competition that is not about horse power. I keep seeing car brands competing with each other about who's gonna make the most powerfull car, the thing is on the road we can't use the damn 1000 HP cause there's a 50kph limit!!!!
Some of the best cars of the last couple years are way below competitors in power, cause reality is, all they need is a bit of sound and engagement on the road to be better 🤷‍♂

OMG I’m seeing love notes to Lotus, the original MR2, love notes to the late Lexus LFA in the genetic codes of its design, especially on the titanium version -the vents, the diffuser. I can’t get away from this car today. Goodnight, if it looks like that -get it. If it don’t look like that… but I hope it does. Save money, pay in full in cash, no loan, no financing -just get it done. I hope that’s the one a lot of concepts out recently like their seeing how the market responds before building I hope the titanium one, is the one. If not, I don’t know.

Mhhh... Let's sumerise things Toyota is building a MR2 that is an Mr. That's good.... If that want it to be there falagship and build it in limited numbers then that's really bad.
At least it has a Manuel and is a turbo.... But if no one can buy it then it might be better dead....I mean look what happens to the nsx, the supra or the z.....I don't mind that it will be potentially just for the JDmarked at least they get something fun 🎉

if it doesn't have an EV drivetrain it's going to be another still born project. Other companies already have a more advanced engineered engine and transmission. Why do you think the Supra is actually a BMW?

A 3 cylinder? ... Ffs. That's just not appropriate in a car like this. At that price? The last time a major manufacturer put a 3 cylinder engine in a 'sports car' it failed miserably.

I feel like Toyota will compound on the trifecta. So Supra leaves the trio then mr2 enters the chat in US. Then 86 leaves the chat and Celica enters as a goodbye to ICE
