I liked the little intro with pretty slick graphics for those days, and a very cool guitar riff in the background. Later found out that it is The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.
Yes, that was fun. I made a point to drive around large concentrations of event structures and vehicles, and blasting them with canon. The only problem was that if you did it for too long, sometimes the game would glitch and your plane would teleport to the edge of the map, making reaching the base impossible, ruining the score.
I remember my dad bought me this in 1991, playing on a 80286, yes, 286. I was so happy at this game, playing everyday, and reading the manual on the details of the weapons . That was the first time in my life learning about Libya because it is mentioned so many times in the game. I am from Hong Kong though haha. Anyways, the frame rate on the 286 was lagging so bad. But I never played it in high frame rate so it is not a problem lol

I remember playing this on my Gateway 2000 486-DX33 in 92/93 along with so many more. To me the 90's were the golden age of video games. So many advancements and "firsts" in that era. EDIT- Haha, that's a special radar dish

nice vid : ) just bought this on steam, one of my favourite games ever, have so many happy memories playing this game on the amiga, playing it again it still delivers. the graphics and sounds are obviously basic when compared to modern titles but for pure playability and immersion it is still my favourite flight sim. I wish more developers would focus on gameplay depth, attention to detail and mission design and worry less about flashy graphics.
So many memories playing tis on my dad's Tandy PC. I must've been about 10 years old when I started playing. As others have mentioned, I used to read the manual which was super-detailed over and over again. On the weekends, if my friends weren't outside playing, I'd play this and Seawolf. I would pretend I was an actual pilot doing these missions and when I came back after doing a few missions, I would land, "debrief" and then go to the mess hall (my home's kitchen" heat up some Chef Boyardee and have lunch before "setting out again".
As arcade as this is, i still loved it. It was a fun little sim that even attracted people that usually do not care about sims. But it was accessible to many, in a way that it was easy to learn and do.
Wow that brings back the memories I loved this game put in plenty simulator time on this one can't remember if I beat it or not (giggity ) but I do remember when I started to get bored with it I would drive around on the ground at random tank farms and shoot the tanks .....good times
Is it just me, or does this thing have the agility of a Hornet, the armament of a Blackhawk, and the gun power of a Thunderbolt, all while maintaining the stealth capabilities of a Nighthawk?
Yeah I remember you could play it as an all around ground attack + air to air with worse stealth or strictly ground attack with stealth capabilities so good you had to fly directly over a SAM field to get detected. Also loved the different types of radar the game threw at you that would make you alter your course to avoid detection. Really fun game, Ilogged hundreds of hours in this game.
Darknamja Tornado. Nothing like flying under 100ft to hit an enemy airfield at night! That game also had the mission planning system that set the standards for today's sims. Many, many hours on that game.
Were you playing this with accelerated time turned on? That radar at Olgenegosk seems to be spinning at a rather crazy speed... IRL they don't often reach even 10rpm, and I don't recall them turning that fast in the original version of the game either...
What did you do for sound settings? This sounds a lot better than when I've tried the game on DOSbox, or watched videos of it on TH-cam. I particularly like the engine sound; It has a somewhat eerie, yet calming hum to it.
I used Roland Sound Board instead of Adlib! In the "Select Sound Driver" screen at beginning! Of course you'll have to have Roland Mt-32 roms installed on dosbox before you can emulate it!
Guybrush Threepwood After doing some 'Googling' around off and on throughout the day, I've got MUNT, a Roland emulator, generating the sound in my installation of F-117 in DOSBox! Thanks for the tip! I have the Dosbox and still can only get the "Adlib" settings to work. But I ma still learning my way around DosBox. For example, I had to deactivate the "prepare for landing" voice or the game woudl crash at that point.
I always liked this game!!!, along with the f-19 and f-15 that were very similar. One question you may know: what functions do the ECM and IRJ indicators perform, under the Chaff, Flare and Decoy counters? thanks !!!
you could turn on either ecm to jam low end radar guided missles or the irj to jam first generation ir guided missles. just another way to evade SAMS if you run out of chaff and flare etc.
You can turn them on to jam radar or ir missiles, but turning on ecm increases detectability and irj reduces engine power, so those should be only used briefly when really needed
A few things that I learned to exploit in this game. You only needed one burst to bring a plane down All missiles could be avoided by breaking hard left when it got close and then breaking hard right at once. Even if your aircraft is critically damaged, you could fly all the way back by doing yoyo. Dive, gain speed and then pull up And if you destroy a depot, keep firing at it and every hit counts as a ground target destroyed. That way you could gretaly increase your score. And yes, I played this to death!
the best exploit was to fly at minimum altitude and speed on a reconnaissance/photo mission. you will never get detected and you will get maximum points and a cmoh.
Omg I had that game on pc when I was 8… I had no clue how to play the game lol. I figured out how to take off but was never able to land, nor I understood what to do LOL
One odd thing about this game was how the enemy air crafts never fired at you using their gun. That would have made the game more difficult and realistic.
I'm trying to play this on my computer, does anyone have a schematic for the keys used? I loved this game but can't figure out the controls for it on my computer. anyone got any informational help?
I grew up on F19, and this one is way better (look/feel/sound). F19 was still fun though, to a degree. I never figured out how to get retired though. Game seemed to have no end. Saw a manual that talked about an annoying mechanic that only progresses you if you statistically perform better than previous missions, which is silly. Your chances of success become insurmountable if you start off awesome.
I’d love to see a more grounded arcade style like this come back where you feel like you are doing more realistic missions. I enjoy the Ace Combat games for what they are, but the storylines are a bit goofy and your aircraft magically has hundreds of missiles...
