I miss my youth 🥺 Hard to believe I'll be 50 next year. When games like this first came out we were astonished at the graphics. How far we've come ! Lucky for us we are the generation that's seen us go from black and white tv to 8k and all the other good shit.
I want to thank Microprose for the literally hundreds of hours of fun playing their simulations. What these programmers were able to wrangle out of the hardware of the time still amazes me. Much of this software is now abondonware that can be found and downloaded free and still played in DOSBOX. These were great games before the evil empire of Steam which made playing networked games at home almost impossible since you had to purchase multiple copies of a game before you can host LAN parties.
Yeah, B-17 Flying Fortress, F-15 Strike Eagle, Falcon, Silent Service. _The Mile High Club_ , a collection of flight sims published by Velocity was also great. It included titles from several publishers: F-14 Tomcat, Heroes of the 357th, Jet Fighter II, MIG-29, Mega Fortress, and Wing Commander.

I remember whenever we go out for dinner, I have to bring the “game manual” with me so I can watch the manual during dinner. Very detailed, and I am always fascinated by F117, always asking father why it is stealth? I can see it..... Wonderful game! I think he did the entire mission with the landing gear down! lol (GEAR light flashing). I played so many hours of this game, that in the end I was able to hit an enemy fighter from kilometers away with just a single machine gun shot.
I had a copy of this game but not the manual, and the copy protection would show you a picture of a plane and you had to identify it from the manual, with multiple choice froma list. So I drew out each plane and defeated the copy protection manually, through the process of elimination :) probably took me a month or two to complete it, and of course once I was done I didn't need the cheat sheet I built.
Great memories! I loved playing this as a kid! I could never land so I would always do the mission and bail out over the runway lol. Stealth tip - you are flying WAY TOO HIGH! Fly low and slow (just above stall speed) so you are practically invisible to radar. Are there any modern games like this? I want to be able to take off and land, and fly to the destination - I hate starting a mission and being dropped right into the action, and have the mission magically end when the target is destroyed.
It is a strange feeling to watch this. I remember flying so many epic missions, even surviving and landing with no fuel using gliding techniques, and now, almost 30 years later i am watching the game play of a random fella that flies the plane like he is drunk and with gear down showing that he does not know what to do.
