This video is a discussion on things to consider when choosing a cam for your Harley M8. Hope you find it helpful and check out my other videos as well.
Just did RS468 in my 21 road glide special the short time that i have been able to ride the bike is a beast. Really happy with it so far. Powervision can map fuel moto has revised it a couple times. Will continue to record data logs and send them to fuel moto to revise. They are great as long as you purchased tuner from them they will update it
I bought a 2017 ultra limited back in 2019 with 6,000 miles on it. Decided to put a S&S 475 cam chest kit because of the oil pump issues, Went and met with different mechanics out there and they scared the hell out of me by the cost for labor and trusting them to do the job right. So I did all the work myself took my time even buying the tool to change out the cam bearing, But my biggest problem was re-tuning the bike at a shop or dealership which in the beginning I did not want them touching my bike, so I found a Thunder max ECM and bought that and put it on my bike downloaded a base map for what I was running cam pipes etc with my lap top which has a adapter cord from them to do this with and now I can do anything I want to the bike and change anything I need with my home lap top computer simply amazing and I think these people make their ECM in Tennessee also. And started it up rode it and it constantly adjust the setting on the bike to your riding style and the bike sounds bad ass. The ECM cost around 900.00 but by doing all my own work I still saved a good amount of money and I know it is done right the first time because my warranty on my work last a lifetime not 30 days. Great video Thank You Very Much.
Nice information. I'm considering the CR 483 / 485 the star 3030 the comp 246a or the RS 468 for my stock 117 in my 2023 Lowrider st what's your opinion on them three torque cams cus I ride bout like you said 2k-4k ish range
Honestly all of those will be great. I am actually considering changing mine out just to try that Star 30/30. I am really interested in that cam. I can tell you my wife's RS468 is a sweet cam and she would not trade it for anything. I drove it recently and I have to say the torque down low is insane and it pulls hard. Also the 117 you have is going to be even stronger than our 114 bikes so you have a huge advantage.
Good video. I’m commenting because I think some of your overlap numbers are off. Your method of adding intake opening to exhaust closing works as long as intake still open when exhaust closes. But if intake closes before exhaust (SS 475, RS 468), then the overlap is intake opening plus intake closing.
good video young man and great information I have the woods 22xe and for how I ride it works perfect, but it took me 3 months of researching to make a decision
right lol I mean I know some stuff (enough to get me in trouble lol) but when you run across videos like this with good unbiased information you can't help but learn something so thank you for posting @@BeardedBreeden1
Please tell me all about your wife’s cam, i really thinking the red shift is my cam, curious tho, i do quite a bit of long distance travel, how much did it affect you fuel economy? Whats your opinion on long term reliability. What lifters did you use, im not sure which ones to use, I here S&S quality is not what they used to be? Thank you, loved the video 💪🏻
Beautiful bikes, awesome beard! With that accent you gotta be from the south like me. Like the vids brother, keep up the good work! Just finished my own cam swap, went with the S&S 475.
What is the difference in the ride experience between your 22xd and the wife’s rs468. I was actually looking at the 22xd but like you said got honest with the way I ride and went with the rs468. I couldn’t be happier. I now understand why so many legitimate shops recommend the rs468 because they understand it fits in the riding style of 90 percent of Harley owners. Just wondering what your thoughts are comparing the two.
I can feel her bike is stronger on the low end from 1800 to 3500 rpm’s but after that mine is pulling stronger. They both run great but she’s stronger down low and I’m stronger on top end.
@@BeardedBreeden1 yeah it definitely comes down to splitting hairs. And it’s not like the so called torque cams aren’t making decent horsepower at any rpm.
0:54 - THIS RIGHT HERE - 10000% TRUTH!!! 2:50 - Another "question" I think is important is: What is a person's riding experience? Why? Some will jump on a bike and want to add a more powerful motor just because their friends' bikes have more power. The person doesn't consider whether or not they can even HANDLE that power.
I've watched a lot of Cam videos on TH-cam I really like yours. The way you did the spreadsheet and information Was Great made me second guess If I should have done the woods XD instead of the XE. Maybe next time I'll try it thanks for The video and keep up the good work.
Hi - not sure if Im understanding it correctly but I think I see an error. ref. your wood 22XD overlap is 28 as suggested. however the RS468 intake closes at 16.5 so that should be where the overlap stops. Is this correct.? Thus I think the RS468 overlap should be 8.5+16.5= 25.. Also the SS475 might also read = 33.2 Thanks for the video - Im learning all the time..
Another issue many dont consider is if your cam of choice runs at a significant higher operating temp. Listening to Matt Smith of Dyno Guys and Master Tech Miller, the temp can easily run 20-30 degrees hotter.
Yes and I have actually seen bikes that run hotter after their cam install. Good point. I did the oil cooler fan install and that is well worth the money as I monitor temps with the ThunderMax software.
What RpM range you typically ride in determines the best cam selection for the best overall experience. The Star 30/30 cams torque comes on early than most and pulls a heavy ass bike immediately and is generally good for most people.
No, not at this time. In my research I found that the stock clutch generally is good to at least around 118 to 120 hp at the rear wheels and I knew this upgrade would put me around 106 to 112 hp at the wheel. Now having said that....you would be smart to start thinking of the clutch as you indicated and I am looking into that now. Have not decided what direction I am going yet.
Well I did not have all the info on that cam at that time. I think that is a great cam and I may go back and do another video with the Star 30/30, Feuling cam and a few others. Jims has a cam that I like but you cant find any information on it. There are alot of good cams out there and the Star is one at the top. I might switch to that just to try it.
Great video!!!!! Helped me ALOT!!! I wanted to put a s&s 475 cam in my bike but I’m second guessing it now. I seen a video recently and the guy said the 475 is kind of choppy and unstable when taking exits on the highway. I understand why he feels that way now.
this is about the best explanation of cams videos I've ever seen.
Thanks!
Great explanation!!! thanks

Nice job, thank you for making the video. Is that excel sheet public?
Very informative. I put a S&S 475 in my 107 Still trying to get the tune right.
Making any progress?

Yes the Star 30/30 is an outstanding cam as well. Gonna look into that cam more. I started looking at that cam and never really completed my research.
I have the 30/30 in a 2020 RGS and am quite pleased.
Excellent job! Clear and usefull

When you upgraded the cam, did you also or plan to upgrade the clutch?
No, not at this time. Consider upgrading the springs to the 1275's. It's 40 bucks saves the clutch packs and can easily install with only removing the derby cover.
Great information. Simple and informative.
Thank you.
