The Best Way to Raise a Sailboat Mast Oday Mariner

  • I finally discovered an easy way to raise the mast single handed on a trailer sailboat. You just need a way to temporarily attach a winch to the mast, and a higher point on a post to pull from. You can reverse this (winch on post) but then you will not be able to stabilize the mast as it goes up, allowing less control.

A close up of the winch attaching to the mast and the post and cable connection would be helpful.

Nice setup. I have an O'Day 19 with a similar length mast. Over the years (I'm 72), I have been able to simply "heft" the mast up rotating at the rear mast step pin. (I always wondered why O'Day included a forward mast step pin until I saw someone needing to raise their mast from the bow vs the stern.)
The winch does make the whole process much easier. Using the trailer to provide the higher lifting anchor keeps things simple. The Mariner and O'Day 19 masts are easy enough to stabilize port and starboard especially on the trailer.
My other boat is a Capri 22. At first I did try just "hefting" that 100+ pound mast by myself. It can be done but not recommended. I use a gin pole (whisker pole) with a stabilizing bridle for both the gin pole and mast. I maintain control both raising and lowering the mast. These items can always be on the boat taking little additional space.
I have been considering an a-frame that provides the needed stabilizing supports for all directions. The a-frame supports can broken down and be stored in either the cabin or the generous ports side locker accessed from the cabin.
My goal is to keep the process simple and safe and ideally to keep the items on the boat.

Thanks kid, I like your style. it’s the most simplistic way. I’ve seen To raise that mast mast and I feel like I would be very comfortable utilizing your system. If you would post detailed pictures, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.!

This is very clever. I may have missed it, but couple of closeup pictures, especially the way the winch is attached to the mast, would be really helpful!

Thank you and please, I'd like to see the stepping method of the winch to the mast. I've tried to build something along this same line, but side-to-side sway is a problem. Can you give more of a description and photos?

I love that way I’m new to sailing I just bought my first sailboat. I bought a 1985 hunter 22 foot and I tried one way and then I watched so many videos on TH-cam and so I came up with a way but I have no control over the mass. It’s Waze too much trying to raise it I don’t care for it and I’ve seen this video and I think this is the way to do it because you’ll have control of the mass all the way Up, so I’m gonna try that. I think you’ve got the way there

The vertical post on the trailer can double as a mast crutch for transport. I like this. I would like to see pictures of the post and how you attached it. Also, that winch seems awfully fast. Do you have to find a particular gear ratio? Thanks.

Hey great concept i started mounting the winch on a board. Was curious to see your design. As i will be doing it myself. Thanks

That seems to be one of the easier methods I've seen.. I have a good but gutted '68 Mariner hull I'd give you if you were closer to south Ga.

I am really new to sailboating, I’ve been a power boat guy most of my life. I recently purchased a Hobie cat 17. The mast on the cowboy is 28 feet or 11th. It’s a bear for my son and I to try to step this thing each time we want to take the boat out. I love this idea. I would like some of the pictures you mentioned in your video so I can get a better idea on how to do this myself.

Nice and simple. I have a Montgomery 17 and need a system like this. Right now I use a gin pole, but want to use my winch. Can you send me some photos/instructions? thanks

there must be something wrong with me. I want to down step the mast on my hunter 212 while i am on the water to get below low hanging bridges. so i am looking to create a gallows over the tiller and and loop around the spreaders to a gin poll end (the gin pole otherwise serves as my spinnaker gin pole) with the foot end attached to the mast raising pole bracket. the up haul line is attached to the gin pole end and run through a pulley back to the mainsheet downhaul works. but it is a work in progress. Cheers

I just bought at a auction a 1964 O'day Mariner 19 ft. all it needs is a little TLC. Amazing what a pressure washer can do. Since 98% of the time I will be single sailing, Great idea of putting a winch on the mast to raise it. Thanks for the Ideas. I'm going to restore the boat to new looking . Any other ideas for the Mariner would be appreciated.

67 Mariner here. Would like to build the same apparatus. Looks like you mounted the winch on a board and then used small tie downs to secure to mast. I saw similar mast raising ideas on TH-cam and was going to tack metal plates off the winch with 2 bolts in rear plate to secure. Your method looks much simpler with less scuffing to mast. Would you send a few picks of your winch on backplate? Two 1” tie-downs top & bottom? Yes, wonderful sailboat indeed ☺️

Show us the pivot plat or tabernacle you have at the base of the mast. I don't have these things, just a recessed "cup" in front of the cuddy. I need a winning solution!

This looks faster than the gin pole method I’m currently using, think I will try it but use the main sheet instead of a winch.

    I have a question and a suggestion.
Why put the winch on the mast and not the trailer?
Putting a temporary crutch under the winch strap would allow you to winch the mast up without the need to lift it, you could put it in place on the tabernacle and cut it to a length that by the time the crutch is not needed, the winch strap will pull it out of the way. Some masts have a similar raising system using the whisker pole to raise the winch cable to give it the angle it needs to raise the mast without help, similar to how spreaders function.
