This was the song they put out as a tribute to their drummer the Rev. It was so sad when he died, and this song is such a touching memorial for him. But it does really just touch the heart when thinking of anyone whom you have lost. It helps the grief, I think. Gives it an outlet.
Also A7X is one of the few bands that have been together since they were kids. The Rev dying was the first time they had to replace a member. So sad, he was a GPAT
“Your pain is gone, your hands untied” First verse “never shamed but never free” Jimmy had multiple addictions since a young age so he was never really free but lived unashamed. Now his hands are “untied” meaning free. Thank you for this reaction and for not being ashamed to show your vulnerable side, we all have one.❤
Its been 15 years since Jimmy died and I STILL cry every time i hear this song.. now as my generation is dying so young we can all relate to the words in this song a little too much.
8:50 Imagine being the band and writing it about your friend/drummer, and then going out and playing it live night after night. I remember they did their song Fiction (written by The Rev) at a show in 2014 Fairly Shortly after The Rev had died, and Matt had to stop singing and cry, because the "REV!" chants were so loud he couldn't keep it together, it was a beautiful moment one I'll never forget as long as I live.
I always thought this song was written about The Rev too, but turns out Syn wrote this song about his grandpa before they lost Rev. But the band as a whole decided to use the song as a tribute to him. I saw them on the Nightmare tour right after they lost him, in 2010. They did this song and their whole show that night was a tribute. They had the big banner with that final photo hanging behind them. It was a great show, but the whole thing had a sad undertone to it. It was my first time seeing them. I wish I had found them sooner.
@@ILikeDonuts666 A little over 4 years, which is about how long ago Covid was, doesn’t that feel fairly recent? I said “fairly” I stand by what I said.
@@Kiertiana I didn’t know about that part, that makes a lot of sense then why it’s got such broad message appeal. These guys really are fantastic songwriters.
@djjazzyjeff1232 Yeah, I just recently learned that myself. I was told by someone else on another video. I did some research, and it turns out it seems to be true. Most media outlets still say that he wrote this about The Rev, though.
Avenged Sevenfold - Fiction: The Rev sings: "Promise me you'll never feel afraid" After The Rev died, Avenged Sevenfold - So Far Away: M Shadows sings: "Sleep tight I'm not afraid" It's something that brings tears to my eyes every time.
This is the strength of Metal. It is generally about getting an emotion out of yourself and sitting in it, rather than letting it fester. It's why a lot of the themes are dark, because they are usually the ones that need to come out. It can be a good way to understand and reframe the feelings. It does mean that you end up with songs that you can only listen to sparingly. I think if you ask most Metalheads/Rockers, they all have that one song up their sleeve that they will only break out once or twice a year when they need a good emotional purge. They will probably also have one or two that they are glad they heard, but will never listen to again. I hope that this was more a release than it was trauma, but thanks for sharing it regardless.
'I have so much to say, but you're so far away'. Damn, that hits hard right now. Just earlier today I thought: I should tell mum about that... She passed in 2021 😢 RIP to our loved ones
When you say “Fuck you Avenged Sevenfold” we know you mean “Fuck you for hitting me in the feels” and we all know this pain and it’s why we love A7X and many more in the “metal” scene.
Great one once again Teddy! The song is for their drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan who passed away from an accidental overdose while they were still recording/producing this record(Nightmare). It was sudden and devastating, he was only 28. You should check out Fiction from that record as well. It was the last song The Rev wrote for that record before his death(he turned it in within weeks before actually). That song is like his premonition of his own death. Like he knew he didn't have much time left. Since he was young he always told everyone that he'd die before the age of 30. Eery as fuck but it's a great song. He had recorded it on piano with his vocals the week before his death and their singer M. Shadows just added his vocals after his death to finish it. Turned it into an amazing duet. Haunting but beautiful.
7:24 man I just wanted to give you a hug. I’ve been binging your videos because I love seeing you react for the first time to my childhood and still favorite songs, but my heart sank a little when I saw this video title. If you’ve experienced loss, you know this song will hurt in ways you didn’t expect it to. I sang my heart out to this song in two concerts: one several years ago, and one this past year. The first one I was just blissfully singing along to a rare acoustic song by A7X. The second was after my aunt lost her battle with cancer, and I was sobbing my way through each word. I was crying at the first guitar strum. But idk it reminds me how much I miss her and still love her, and how there’s still so much to say but she’s so far away. Sending hugs and tissues ❤
Brilliant reaction to an awesome emotional song....RIP Jimmy!! Not sure if you're pannign to listen to it but teh live official music video for Disturbed's "hold onto memories"..........one point in that video will wreck even the hardended souls
Yep. This is another death that hit me SO hard when I heard about it. The Rev was such a legendary drummer. RIP man I can't listen to this without getting teary eyed. Again welcome to the family Teddy. You should check out their song Welcome to the Family on a related note.
Played this song at my Dad's memorial service when he passed almost 13 years ago now. I saw A7X about 2 months before his passing and they performed this live. Beautiful! But still so hard for me to listen to. 😢
My previous comment was me in my feels but your autism comment caught me off guard. My son is autistic and music is literally how I wake him up in the morning. If it’s a song he’s not into, he’ll keep sleeping. But boy, he jumps right up when it’s a song he wants to jam to. I love your reactions, looking forward to more!
I can vibe to this song, but also it definitely will bring out your feelings for sure. lost my dad over 12 yrs ago and every time I here this song I think about it
The song is very heartbreaking particularly if you've ever lost somebody very very close to you too soon. But I don't get depressed listening to it It actually gives me a good hopeful feeling
This song and ‘Buried alive’ have such an emotional attachment for me. My dad went through stage 4 throat cancer when I was about 11 years old. He survived, barely. This song came out around that time and he absolutely loved this album from start to finish (buried alive being his favorite song of all time). I’d like to think this song and buried alive helped save him and I’m so thankful to still have him in my life after almost losing him. I have lost so many people recently and this song helps me to get through it. Hearing it live brings me to tears every time. (RIP The Rev 🤘🏻)
I personally struggle with feeling my emotions and its songs like these, as well as many other metal songs, that allow me to understand myself even a little bit deeper
Beautiful reaction, bro! Try not to focus on that what you cannot control. It’s like always having an umbrella open, waiting for the rain to come not realizing that you are missing out on the sunshine. Keep your head up. The world needs you.
Yep bro its that time again to bawl ur eyes out... thisbsosng hit me instantly the 1st time i heard it..especially in the end when theh showed REV as i didnt know he passed away
For someone thatisalready struggling with depression, I hate that majority picked this song for you man! It mad me cry and I sont ever cry! You ever need an ear, I will lend mine any day for ya bro. Positive, happy thoughts my boy. Stick with the happy stuff!!!
Your channel is my first ever sub...and as an oldie, that's saying a lot. I feel such gratitude for you and your genuine reactions and love of music. As a fan of all kinds of different metal, it's incredible to see someone on a very real journey through the genres. Please continue to keep an open mind. I have so many recommendations I loved to give, both metal and other, but I just discovered your channel and will continue to watch your journey and am happy to just join you on it.
This hits every time!! I've cried so many tears to this song remembering loved ones I've lost!! As always Teddy an amazing reaction and thankyou for trusting us with being vulnerable! Stay strong and keep ya chin up ❤
8:20 There's a Volbeat song with a line, "The memories are all we have, so keep them safe and sound." I swear although Rap gets credit for excellent lyricism and word play, rock and metal does it as well as anyone. Edit: Last Day Under the Sun, incase anyone wondered.
This song rips my heart out every time I hear it with all the family and friends I have lost as well as Military brothers and sisters this song hits way too close to home and too deep
When they came live recently not only is it for The Rev its for anyone who lost someone and holds them close. Its for anyone that lost and needed to know yo can move on yet keep them close. Music can make you feel and they want you to remember their hurt as well as your own. Its rough but you cary on in their memory and grow with them by your side even if they arent here anymore.
Dude! Your journey into metal so far in the past month or so has managed to stretch across 30 yrs or so of memory lane for me! It is so f*ckin' weird to realize that some of the stuff that is so new to you is so old now. 🤣🤣🤣 It's epic that you gave it a chance and really enjoy it! I knew we got you really hooked with Bad Omens. 🤘😝
I have lost 6 family members in the past year. This song always resonates with me these days but it doesnt make me sad anymore i understand what they are saying in the song they miss their friend and brother but want them to know that they are carrying him with them still and that they will be okay just takes time
In your review the one where you played nightmare , the opening of the video shows matts hand with a death bat on it . Its the rev's . And the drums in the scenes of the night mare and athe end , was jimmys drum set 😢
Thank you very much for reacting to this song! This is a tribute to their drummer The Rev. If you can, please do Hail To The King by them next. Very powerful song.
I can't help on the whole fear of death part, except to tell you it's natural to fear death. Death is an unknown entity/thing, and if there's one thing we humans fear, it's the unknown. Grief and loss on the other hand, on that I have a quote that's helped me, the quote is about losing a lover, but it could just as easily apply to the loss of a friend, a parent or a sibling. It's from the animated TV show "South Park" and comes from the character of butters and goes like this "Well yeah, and I'm sad, but at the same time I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like, it makes me feel alive, you know? It makes me feel human. And the only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt somethin' really good before." theres a little more to it than that since it's an exchange between two characters but that quote alone is something to take to heart. I wish everybody out there the best. Happy newyear btw.
The Avenged Sevenfold "official" fan club is called "The Deathbats Club." So i guess the fans would be called "Deathbats?" The deathbat is their logo for a lil context of the name.
Lol you, your brotheren and stephan hawkin. Dude you're cool as shit bro. Love that you listened to this song. My brother in law committed suicide and this song we used to listen to often. This songs means more to me than most songs. He was my brother. Best friend and coworker. It's been so hard to not have him in my life and I have felt incomplete since then.
You should definitely do a reaction to the stage (either the song or some songs from the album). It’s got a pretty deep meaning while also being amazingly technical and just an overall sweet vibe.
I hope you see this man. I’ve only just started watching your channel but I myself struggle with severe panic in terms of mortality. I’ve had my best friend and many family members die fairly recently. What friends haven’t died, I’ve become distanced from due to my move across the country. There is an epidemic of loneliness and mortal panic amongst young men in this generation and you are not alone. It may be mostly white young men in your country but in the US it is far wider-reaching. People are becoming disenfranchised, aware of how little they matter in the scheme of things. I don’t know how to fix it but I do know that constant access to social media isn’t helping anyone.
14:55 as a therapist, ima start doing this little dance and song to my patients. "... unresolved issueeees..." Like shit, it's the NHS, what are they gonna do, fire me?
I'm in a bunch of the live show clips at the end there, some of them are from Download Festival in 2006 in Donnington Park, on the old Racetrack setup. I went to see them at that festival when I was 15, met them at a meet and greet as an obsessed teenager. These guys were legit my first musical obsession, even got their logo tattooed in 2008. My heart broke when I heard The Rev had died.
Take the underlining message(s) away, I have always said “heavy bands make the best soft songs”. This is one of em. Easy top 10 in my eyes of best soft by heavy
i never really used to give this song much thought, but i always liked it and knew it was emotional. i havent listened to this song in years. before close friends of mine passed away. i went to sing along like i used to, but instead i started crying
It's amazing what music does to us. So much has happened in the last year for me, and so many songs that I liked, but didn't have any previous personal connection to me, would come across my radio on shuffle. And man, hearing lyrics that you've heard a thousand times, that suddenly mean something so much different than the last time you heard them, it just hits you.
This song... it still gives me chills few seconds after starting it. I'm sure now you know we it's a song that we love. Their dear friend and drummer died of a overdose if I remember right. It's a tribute to him. I absolutely love this song and the emotion in it.
It is a powerful song, originally about Syn's grandfather and then reworked on the passing of the Rev. There is another part, The song 'St. James'. I believe they refer to it as 'the light to So Far Aways' dark'. You should check it out, It's a great upbeat song.
It's not depressing. It's sad, but acknowledging our losses and the love we have for those gone honors them. It's a tribute to the mark they left on us.
you have to understand that’s entirely subjective though… for me personally, this song was depressing as it brought forward memories of people I can no longer just pick up the phone and call anymore. It’s purpose may be to tribute, but they’re not in control of the mark their music leaves on others. As beautiful as the song is, it’s still depressing.
My mother showed me a video of an Alzheimer lady remembering her daughter, but to me, it was depressing watching them have to fight to remind her of her own daughter and husband. My mother thinks it's happy because she remembers at the end of the video. It just makes me ruminate on the human condition and how fragile we really are.
Just in case you referring to the lyric as "hands are tied" i want you to know that the actual lyric is "no pain hands untied" as in the Rev is free now
I know hearing it for the first time is heart-wrenching. As others said below, it was a tribute to their drummer whom they lost (he was shown in all of the scenes after the "break"). As I listened to this this more and more, I found it to be a gorgeous tribute to him and a wonderful remembrance of all of the great times they had together. Beautiful reaction, Teddy. I know it hit hard. Take a breath and center yourself. Much love and respect... Now react to their track Hail to the King for a nice spectrum of their dynamics.
This song cuts me to the bone. I miss my childhood friends that moved away, grew up and found lives of their own, before they became adult jerks and you discovered you were better off without them
I HIGHLY recommend "After Life" and "Hail To The King" by Avenged Sevenfold! Another touching song but not nearly as sad would be "Dear God" by Avenged Sevenfold!
I found you by accident one day at work, and you have quickly became my favorite reactor. Your emotion is unrivaled and you keep it real. Much love brother. Keep up the strength and keep making brilliant content.
why are you happy that you didn't experience pain? pain is an integral part of life. without it, we cannot experience true joy. our existence means nothing without pain.
this one gives me goose bumps and chills every time. i followed avenged sevenfold from the very beginning so when jimmy "the rev"Sullivan (their original drummer and best friend) passed away it was so shocking as a fan that at that point had listened to every album listened to every interview almost every live performance. when this song came out it definitely brought strong emotions. if you really want a tear jerker youl need to check out his tribute video not this song but the actual tribute video put together by friends and family. also thank you for sharing this very deep moment with us
I love that comment of yours, " f**k you avenged sevenfold, I was happy before I did this reaction" 😂 so funny but this song is amazing and your reaction was well worth the watch bro

And the only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt somethin' really good before." theres a little more to it than that since it's an exchange between two characters but that quote alone is something to take to heart. I wish everybody out there the best. Happy newyear btw.
Love the song, RIP Rev. This song 8s on my list to be played at my funeral
this song hits for me because the rev is my biggest inspiration on drums. the man was a true legend
My band used to cover this all the time, such a tearjerker
This song still makes me tear up. RIP St. James
This song has helped me over the years to get through the death of my best friend.
Clicked on this knowing I’d be bawling by the end of it 😅
The Avenged Sevenfold "official" fan club is called "The Deathbats Club." So i guess the fans would be called "Deathbats?" The deathbat is their logo for a lil context of the name.
It is without a doubt. The greatest tribute song to a specific loved one, that has ever been written in history.
Never sobbed so much at concerts EVERY TIME they played this 😭
Lol you, your brotheren and stephan hawkin.
Hang tight brother. The ones that we love will be seen again, and that will be a beautiful day!❤
14:55 as a therapist, ima start doing this little dance and song to my patients.
"... unresolved issueeees..."
Like shit, it's the NHS, what are they gonna do, fire me?
The song for rev the drummer such an emotional song to watch but also such an amazing tribute
This song is about a missing drummer, but it's truly about any missing friend from our youth
Every time. Gets me every god damn time
This song will bring tears to everyone’s face. Even if you’ve never heard it before.
You should check out Planets then Acid Rain by avenged sevenfold super underrated songs but they tell a two part story.
Not gonna lie, "Teddy Grey on Depression" kinda sunk me a little... Hugs bro. Mad respect for keeping it real.
It is a powerful song, originally about Syn's grandfather and then reworked on the passing of the Rev.
There is another part, The song 'St. James'. I believe they refer to it as 'the light to So Far Aways' dark'. You should check it out, It's a great upbeat song.
FoREVer 🖤
It's not depressing.
It's sad, but acknowledging our losses and the love we have for those gone honors them.
It's a tribute to the mark they left on us.
you have to understand that’s entirely subjective though… for me personally, this song was depressing as it brought forward memories of people I can no longer just pick up the phone and call anymore.
It’s purpose may be to tribute, but they’re not in control of the mark their music leaves on others. As beautiful as the song is, it’s still depressing.
@TeddyGreyOS That's fair.
I'm sorry for trying to tell you what it means to you.
I'm also sorry for your losses.
Dealth bats is the name of the fans.
🦇💀🦇 foREVer 🦇💀🦇
This song cuts me to the bone. I miss my childhood friends that moved away, grew up and found lives of their own, before they became adult jerks and you discovered you were better off without them
I allways liked this song, but even more after my brother died last fall. Great lyrics!
may he rest in peace stay strong:)!!
They did a live acoustic version of this song and tbh I like it even more than the original
Deathbats-avenge up and lets get him to react to Avenged Sevenfold's Cosmic 🦇🦇🦇🦇
RIP Rev
foREVer
I won’t see you tonight part 1. Saved my life. foREVer
I HIGHLY recommend "After Life" and "Hail To The King" by Avenged Sevenfold! Another touching song but not nearly as sad would be "Dear God" by Avenged Sevenfold!
Acid Rain too
rev,m shadows, synyster gates, zacky vengence, johny chirst love you guys listening every day 15.02-2024
i feel u man
I found you by accident one day at work, and you have quickly became my favorite reactor. Your emotion is unrivaled and you keep it real. Much love brother. Keep up the strength and keep making brilliant content.
why are you happy that you didn't experience pain? pain is an integral part of life. without it, we cannot experience true joy. our existence means nothing without pain.
RIP Jimmy 😢
I believe in you and your fam does and thatw a sign like idk how but it might be
Dude , i don't know if you allready done songs by DEFTONE , i'd love watch your react on his fury voice 🤩😍
this one gives me goose bumps and chills every time. i followed avenged sevenfold from the very beginning so when jimmy "the rev"Sullivan (their original drummer and best friend) passed away it was so shocking as a fan that at that point had listened to every album listened to every interview almost every live performance. when this song came out it definitely brought strong emotions. if you really want a tear jerker youl need to check out his tribute video not this song but the actual tribute video put together by friends and family. also thank you for sharing this very deep moment with us
I love that comment of yours, " f**k you avenged sevenfold, I was happy before I did this reaction" 😂 so funny but this song is amazing and your reaction was well worth the watch bro
RIP the Rev.
Rip the rev
