You are right Maradona had a better WC campaign but he was in his prime at 26 yrs and that's the difference. Messi at 35 almost 36, had to wait alot longer to have a team on par that Maradona had in 86. Messi was just very unlucky because he had teammates past WCS that failed him because they were too lazy and refused too step up to help him and this was Big name players that crapped in thier pants during crucial decisive moments. A software engineer today is much better productivity-wise than an engineer from the 80s or 90s but does that mean it is "harder" now? Of course not, it is actually EASIER now because of the vastly more improved software toolboxes available and also the difference in standard of living with respect to equipment and knowledge-gaining efficiency (mainly because of the web). It's the same with football. And don't forget, in the 80s and up to the early 90s, the physical protection for gifted players was almost nonexistent and you could tackle from behind. This is something often forgotten when comparing players from before the early 90s. Today's players are on average better skilled and players from the 80s and earlier were much less efficient and fitter but swap poor physical protection and improved professionalism and it balances out. Not to mention most football pitches were horrendous in the 80s. I think ultimately comparing different eras is futile. You do with the best available at your time. Having said that, it is very enjoyable to watch videos like this as it is fascinating to see different metrics.
