10:45 from what I've seen, people saying your skills reset are using the wrong term as well. At least from what I understand, each act simply introduces a few more skills so that players aren't thrown into the deep end with all skills available to them at once. It'd be like starting in Lumbridge and being taught how to woodcut, fish, and fight a mob. Then you go to Varrock and the game teaches you about cooking, mining, and idk magic. You don't lose access to being able to woodcut/fish/fight a mob while you were in Lumbridge; you simply gained a few more skills instead.
Your skills dont reset, you get new ones, but more than half of them are copy pasted versions of the others, which is why people claiming the skills get reset was a thing, because it kind of is true for all combat skills and gathering skills. YOur understanding is incorrect though, its not that they just introduce skills so people dont get overwelmed, its that those skills only work in those episodes full stop. this is why your example with starting in lumbridge is completely wrong. Its more like starting in lummy, being taught to fight a mob, woodcut, fish, and then going to varrack and all of those skills are useless now (in varrock), and you have to relvl the combat skills you already did.
After playing I can agree to the following: 1) Linear gameplay structure that becomes stale, repetitive and boring very quickly. 2) Lack of interplay/synergy between professions across all episodes. There is some, but very little. Cooking/Fishing for example serve no purpose beyond other than making money and cannot be performed in episode 2. 3) Armor/weapon progression not carrying over to other episodes, which is a huge bummer. Basically, make sets of different equipment, store it and pull it out whenever you're ready to fight. 4) No sense of MMO experience because of 0 player interactions. Feels like playing a singleplayer RPG. There is a cap of 20 players in each instance/room and a chat interaction that is heavily sensored. Thats it. 5) Because of tedious gameplay interactions, interfaces, buttons, lack of controls and other stuff, it feels and plays like a mobile game. There are ton of other things that I also dislike with the game, but I would like to believe that these are the most important ones and unfortunately some of them are deep rooted fundamental design choices that will never change. It feels like you're grinding for the sake of just grinding. No purpose, meaningless progression, making it feel soulless

Regarding the eels - the meta is to go between eels and the pufferfish two rooms over. It's a shorter walk than it sounds, and it ends up being perfectly timed for them to have just respawned. The fish vendor stall is also in the room between said two rooms making it easy to sell to him (quicker than dropping your fish). This trick of going between two or even in some rare cases three adjacent rooms is one you'll be using a lot with resource collecting skills to avoid downtime. There's still some areas though where the first resource in your chain (even if you use multiple rooms) takes like 0.5 seconds longer than it takes you to get back there though, so I agree they should fix those ones.
10:10 that does seem to be the case for the majority of skill nodes though. Just like in OSRS there are skilling activities which have down-time and some which don't.

the gathering system is amazing but the combat needs more work it's a little basic, i also wish food does something for combat maybe like a boost or buff
I do kinda wish the gathering skills were more useful immediately but they do have a purpose. It looks like level 200+ materials are not sold in any shops so that’s where the economy will come from. Not sure if making people wait til 200+ for any real purpose is great but I suppose he wants the game to be around for a long time so in that regard I get it. I do slightly worry he’s focusing too much on long term and people will burn out long before then. Leveling after seems mostly linear up to 200 and I don’t think skilling has been **that** slow. Also being able to throw knowledge points into less fun skills is a good plus. Idk, I definitely see the potential and will continue to play on the side but it currently is pretty far from a main screen game yet it in many cases requires main screen game focus. For being a relaxing long term game it sure does have me clicking a lot.
It's extremely ironic how Jagex originally implemented EoC because the biggest complaint about RuneScape was it's combat system. And we're right back to square one with this one!
Interesting take! I agree on the rewards from quests, some will want to complete all quests before moving on but that is a lot of time spent to move onto the next area and start from zero with almost no extra benefit in the new area from the quests in the previous area. The ones that do benefit you really change the game. Everyone is finding out that Spider’s Nest is one of the biggest game changers with the ability to bank any items to their respective banks from strange stones rather than going to each bank. With so little quests per area you would expect better rewards from them all and not just 1 per area. It will find a lot of people having to continue to wait however long for a new area every time rather than having more to do before they can get to the next area meaning by the time you get the ability to move to the next chapter its already released or almost released. AFK skilling is a huge bonus which should hopefully stop people feeling the need to bot the game too. Im curious how PvP will work as the combat system is confusing. I can attack something weak to cryo with epic cryo weapons and its just as good as other weapons so I feel that something is missing or not working there. All in all, its a well made game and flows quite well but there are lots of things that need looking at and tweaking as you have found. It will be good to see it progress over time!
550 total and 100+ hours in, this game is GOOD MAN, esp as a foundation, thanks for giving it a chance because it got me to give it a chance and now I am addicted. Excited to see where the game goes! ALSO COASTERS ARE COMING BACK LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOO
I’m really enjoying BS right now. It does seem more like you’re watching rather than doing. But i am having a decent time. Game is basically skilling from RuneScape but the skills are region locked.
Core combat gameplay is just fundamentally so dissatisfying currently. Im quite interested in how he will implement multi combat or multi pvp without copying RuneScapes system
Many seem to apply criticisms of 20y of rs experience directly onto this PRE ALPHA game; and its mindboggling. Yeah no shit it isnt replacing rs right away, who wouldve thunk? But you had a wise and reasonable take; thanks, b0paptu.
If they took ffxiv's approach with resource gathering it'd be ideal, starts with 4 on screen and never goes below 3. Always replenishes the first node to be depleated. So with the eel example once you gather all 5 the first one you catched instantly respawns so you can just keep going through them with no downtime
It took me approximately no time to figure out how to pop a heal or immunity to avoid dying. I hardly ever die. But it's also really light on death penalty, so who cares? Also, as with the fish, there are another six fish (pufferfish) around the corner. Don't stand staring at the eels. Alternate among eels, pufferfish, and the fishmonger.
@@tappajaav I do a lot of gathering and crafting, so I don't worry about popping potions early. If you see that your HP is within about 10 pts of your opponent after a couple hits, pop a pot early -- because if you need a second one it will be too late if you wait. If you are making your own potions, it's cheap and easy. Faster than running back from the infirmary. Since the pots only do 20% of your health, you'll need two -- more in a long boss fight. You stack 20 in the slot. Just use them! ;)
Outside of combat (which Gower has also mentioned is unfinished), the design of skills become more interesting the farther in I get. I think a lot of stuff right now is very early design, so I'm really hoping and looking forward to future changes. The levels do feel a bit insane, but I believe they're set-up to expect you to do between 50-100 levels on average. The 500 is just a goalpost. What I love most about this game is how interlinked the skills are, and I really hope this gets emphasised more and more with cross-combat skills and different skill interactions. From my experience with Runescape, I started to enjoy Runescape again when I started an Ironman account. It was really fulfilling because you weren't just progressing one skill. Every skill was designed to work together, with each requiring different parts of the next. The skills were incredibly interlinked in Runescape's design, and you never really saw that until you tried to progress them on your own. Modern Runescape's biggest flaw is that they took away all of that interlinking between skills with their XP farms and free items etc. so the design fell apart. Their new skills too aren't designed to work well with other skills. That's really why it ends up so boring. Gower honing in on the best part of his original design makes me really excited for the games future. Also, the graphics are phenomenal. They're so artistically beautiful, with countless intricate details in their design. Same with the sound design. You can tell how much love has gone into this game.
The game has struck a nice balance with professions all synergizing very well IMO. I really like how they tied your classes faction to a class specific equipment crafting skill. You can farm gear thru PVM or ensure you'll be kitted out if you have the right smithing prof level. You can definitely see the economical side of this game with the profs + once trading is introduced which I think is very appealing for some folks. I've put around 80 hours in, my 3 biggest issues - Not many MMO activities? Alpha or not, this is a pivotal piece in this genre and the fact that theres like.. zero group activities seems like a significant oversight. Special Attacks should've been implemented on release as well. Devs should've known how RNG oriented the combat is and desperately needs some sort of player controlled variance. Lastly, I wish they wouldve added more quests like 1-2 more per episode but this part I do try to remember its a small dev team in an EA game. However, quests lead to goals, which if you arent grinding L&F, you'll run out of rather quickly.
im really liking the game so far! surprisngly i think the combat system is well done. it's like a osrs/rs3 hybrid. it will be cool to see how the special attacks work, and also pvp!
They are doing some daring things with the game (the progression system) and it had zero MTX - this alone makes it deserving of anyone's respect. The game is in good hands and it will only get better. I urge people to try it.
I thought something similar about the combat and having an emergency exit strategy. I thought maybe an uncraftable, purchasable immunity potion that have immediate effects when used. They could make it stupidly expensive, idc, just give me that option.
So imo combat is really really rough. The spawn rate on the npcs and the amount of players allowed in a room makes getting in a battle almost impossible at times. And with no world hopping feature right now you just have to spam log in and out until you find a less crowed world. Idk imo they need to add more npcs to each room and not raise the player cap allowed in said rooms. Just so you can always be able to get in a fight with an npc. it's annoying to always get your npc stolen from you cause multi-combat isn't a thing as well. So until they fix combat this game will keep falling in player count. (and it has sadly, look at steam datebase charts.)
My biggest criticism for the game is there is nothing to do with your friends. Co op woodcutting and neting is not good enough. I have no idear why thay don't have a few monster you can fight as small groups.
the idle time is something i don't care for either. It doesn't really add anything to the game other than just making it feel clunky and it may be the actual reason i don't play the game consistently cause sitting there waiting feels really bad. i actually don't mind the gather and forager either because they are different items.
Hey B0aty, just wanted to touch on your point of having the monsters scale and the idea that it removes some mmo aspect. I want to say I think to the contrary, having high level / hard to get to zones be quite scarce of players adds to the feeling of it being a living world, with harsh / dangerous places having less people - it also adds a bit to it when you do then see other players in the areas, it makes it feel more significant; after all, it's lonely at the top.
Fair, but in reality what happens in MMOs is that everybody is in high level areas, and the rest of the world is empty. Even RuneScape is like that, to see players in early areas you need to go to F2P servers, otherwise everybody's at Prif in infernal capes.
@@sbef I'm not sure man, I think I'll respectfully disagree, even in runey atm I still see tonnes of people in early cities; people are always smithing in Varrock, or Cooking/Weaving in Lumbridge castle. I think the main problem with it is when the areas have dead content, and there's no real reason for people to be there. For example, Kourend is great for a couple specific activities, but outside of those (e.g. Konar slayer/Wc guild/farm guild), it's considerably more barren than the other zones / continents in the game. It's hard to have evergreen content, especially in a game where it's common to finish a grind, and then not do that activity again, but I think in large part osrs has succeeded at that
I surprisingly had a good time during the tutorial, just exploring and training alchemy+foraging for fun to see how much I could accomplish during a tutorial. When the tutorial was gone however, seeing hundreds of people cycling between the cooking ingredients shop to the kitchens to grind cooking, that shit made me alt+f4. If I could opt-out of the multiplayer experience, I would probably still enjoy this game at my own pace, but seeing how others play it just killed my fun.
Seeing how others enjoy the game made u alt f4 lol..... wild...but you CAN hide and make it look/feel/play like a single player game......settings > privacy lol
I haven't tried the game yet, but it really seems very much a single player experience. There doesn't seem to be much cooperative elements - which kind of defeats the purpose of it being an "mmo", in my opinion. I know trading will eventually be added, but it needs more than that - i hope they add some dungeons or group play or something like that.
I almost stopped after the tutorial I was like wtf is this shit. But if you give it a few hours you can really start to see the potential. Along with the frequent updates early on I think it’s gonna be huge a year from now.
The fact that during Andrew's poll people wanted more QoL and features over bug fixes, should be enough to tell anyone who shts on this game, how amazing this game already is, in early access, being only a week old, for an MMO lmao, this game has such an incredible foundation to do almost anything with, can't wait for more content.
I get that the episode mechanic is appealing to some but it has the opposite effect on me - kills any and all desire to progress. i hope it changes. Foraging and gathering existing as separate skills is a prime example. Restarting combat is really what makes me not want to commit - it would be one thing if the skills were different (magic chapter, ranged chapter, melee chapter for example). but as it is they just changed the name and called it a new skill.
LMAO the one that they canceled? Unreleased MMOs have always the greatest hype, then if they deliver it's a damp squib. At least this one has the Gower pedigree. Literally the only person in the world to make a Runescape while everybody else does the same WoW clone.
Gower already took 10,000 hours of my life, I’m not giving him any more (besides the next 10,000 on osrs)

the gathering system is amazing but the combat needs more work it's a little basic, i also wish food does something for combat maybe like a boost or buff
New Rollercoaster video when? :D
I liked the video when you said the last sentence lol. Love you King Skroomoomlie!
It's extremely ironic how Jagex originally implemented EoC because the biggest complaint about RuneScape was it's combat system.
And we're right back to square one with this one!
interesting game, I hadn't heard of it before just now. but b0aty where is the rollercoaster tycoon content?
What is the episode concept of brighter shores?
$5 says everything he suggested is in the game by the morning. Andrew has not stopped cooking
Andrew better be recording bacon sizzling in her mother's kitchen again or I'll be disappointed
the xp gaining while u sleep at a slower rate is AWESOME. i wish they would do that in rs to save us some IRL
You know Andrew is gonna watch this video out of respect of the legend that is B0aty! Hi Andrew! Love the game, can't wait to see it grow
can i have 2g for skiling b0aty
2g for?
Been loving Brighter Shores, would love to see a few videos here and there on it
550 total and 100+ hours in, this game is GOOD MAN, esp as a foundation, thanks for giving it a chance because it got me to give it a chance and now I am addicted. Excited to see where the game goes! ALSO COASTERS ARE COMING BACK LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOO
I still can't get over how skills are tied to zones. That's strange
Do other skills also have idle gain xp or just blacksmithing?
I’m really enjoying BS right now. It does seem more like you’re watching rather than doing. But i am having a decent time.
Game is basically skilling from RuneScape but the skills are region locked.
Region locked uim until you finish spiders quest 🤣
Gower and Sawyer the GOATs of my childhood
Core combat gameplay is just fundamentally so dissatisfying currently. Im quite interested in how he will implement multi combat or multi pvp without copying RuneScapes system
Many seem to apply criticisms of 20y of rs experience directly onto this PRE ALPHA game; and its mindboggling. Yeah no shit it isnt replacing rs right away, who wouldve thunk?
But you had a wise and reasonable take; thanks, b0paptu.
yo cant wait for rollercoaster tycoon vids
So you time the health potion usage so it takes effect just before you die?
@@tappajaav I do a lot of gathering and crafting, so I don't worry about popping potions early.
If you see that your HP is within about 10 pts of your opponent after a couple hits, pop a pot early -- because if you need a second one it will be too late if you wait.
If you are making your own potions, it's cheap and easy. Faster than running back from the infirmary.
Since the pots only do 20% of your health, you'll need two -- more in a long boss fight. You stack 20 in the slot. Just use them! ;)
Coverage of Brighter Shores AND confirmation of RCT to come?! B0aty is my fkn santa m8
thanks for the review, been loving the game so far !
Isn't the level 20 bump just for lv20. Then it's back to %2-3 more exp per level
It turns out everything is instant, Boatyard just had mad lag
im really liking the game so far! surprisngly i think the combat system is well done. it's like a osrs/rs3 hybrid. it will be cool to see how the special attacks work, and also pvp!
Do you still plan on doing that Valheim playthrough?
It's ok as a second monitor game. But RS is already my 2nd monitor game.
They are doing some daring things with the game (the progression system) and it had zero MTX - this alone makes it deserving of anyone's respect.
The game is in good hands and it will only get better. I urge people to try it.
Ok, cool mechanic for the afk thing after logout, but when does your character get to rest!
When you die respawn at the hospital
Is it going to have an OSRS style mobile version? To me personally it’s a deal breaker if it doesn’t sadly
Are you asking b0aty?
I feel like this change needs to change by about 40% to be what people want it to be
Really great point about the granite mining compared to the eels respawn. Just feels off and slightly lagged
That offline afk exp reminds me of Eve Online. Granted exp in that game is ENTIRELY real-time based, but it's similar.
Hell yes! RCT Returning!
I thought something similar about the combat and having an emergency exit strategy. I thought maybe an uncraftable, purchasable immunity potion that have immediate effects when used. They could make it stupidly expensive, idc, just give me that option.
drink potion mid fight
2:57 wud you play it if it was a mod markdonalds or mark gerhard game lol
the idle time is something i don't care for either. It doesn't really add anything to the game other than just making it feel clunky and it may be the actual reason i don't play the game consistently cause sitting there waiting feels really bad. i actually don't mind the gather and forager either because they are different items.
"I had a dream last night that I got an amulet" hahahaah
EVE online does the equivalent of logged out AFK skilling
First thing I thought of when he said it too
Hey B0aty, just wanted to touch on your point of having the monsters scale and the idea that it removes some mmo aspect.
It's hard to have evergreen content, especially in a game where it's common to finish a grind, and then not do that activity again, but I think in large part osrs has succeeded at that
this game is still in the oven yet i am already completely hooked!
Its not horrible, it has potential. It made me wanna just play osrs again haha. Truly everyone should try it for themselves. So much potential
I think starting with 100% hp every fight took out any sort of gear advantage or interesting things combat had besides just a win or loss.
I almost stopped after the tutorial I was like wtf is this shit. But if you give it a few hours you can really start to see the potential. Along with the frequent updates early on I think it’s gonna be huge a year from now.
Why is the VVKool talking
RCT Hype!!! 🔥🔥
The fact that during Andrew's poll people wanted more QoL and features over bug fixes, should be enough to tell anyone who shts on this game, how amazing this game already is, in early access, being only a week old, for an MMO lmao, this game has such an incredible foundation to do almost anything with, can't wait for more content.
i dont mind the idle time like runescape it adds value to the items. like runite ore. gotta wait for that to respawn.
So it's an idle mobile game?
U should get quest cape so there’s nothing else left that u can’t do
gonna give this game a go after leagues for sure
i cant believe how fast he is patching content and updating the game.
12:06 The Riot or League MMO I think is the only one with the fighting chance
LMAO the one that they canceled? Unreleased MMOs have always the greatest hype, then if they deliver it's a damp squib. At least this one has the Gower pedigree. Literally the only person in the world to make a Runescape while everybody else does the same WoW clone.
absolutely agree with the resource respawn
If you close your eyes and just listen, its basically a runescape gameplay
i didnt even make it past the tutorial cause it annoyed me. stopped right then and there
