Do you need a bank account to link to it? Or is it it’s own bank that’s connected to the card?
From what I can tell at first it won’t be a full bank account but a pre-paid account that you top up using an app. So you can add money to it, spend where you like and keep track of all your spending, but probably can’t do things like standing orders/direct debits. Hope that helps x

I signed up for their beta program in early October and I just received my card in the mail a couple days ago (mid November)
So, If I order this card I will stay at my actual bank right? And if, isn't it also possible to get a Maestro card?

It'll be interesting to see how (if) they can pull this off. It's very unlikely to be a real current account in the UK at least, where fees for standard accounts are incredibly rare, authorisation and compliance is very difficult and expensive, and the market being so competitive it's generally loss-leading. If they're an "e-money institution" they have the same fundamental issue as Curve - fronting adds an extra point of failure that's nowhere near as resilient as just using your real debit card and creates issues with refunds, downtime and muddied responsibility over payment disputes. And among all of that Curve is still bleeding venture capital without a profit in sight.
It's a nice concept but I wouldn't know how many potential customers wouldn't already happily bank with Triodos and have no need to switch. I can't help feel a card physically made out of wood might be a bit green-washy as well - is using softwood for a card, likely made in a single facility and shipped worldwide (given how bespoke it is) truly better than 2 grams of plastic manufactured domestically like most cards?

All really great points, and it will definitely be interesting to see where they go with it and what they can actually achieve.
Triodos already has an eco friendly card and full current account, which charges £3/month to cover costs so, as you say, it’s hard to see TreeCard having a fully fledged bank account for free at any point.
However saying that I would happily still use TreeCard even if it is just a prepaid card, if I know I’m funding tree planting whilst using it.
In any case I suspect this is first of all aimed more at the US market where it isn’t as crowded by new fintech and more ethical options.
It’s also arguable how much more eco friendly a bespoke wooden card is - but as a piece of marketing I think it’s a good move. It captures attention in ads and makes a statement, and whether for right or wrong many people like to make a statement with what they use. It’s certainly a talking point when you pull it out of your wallet and that probably helps with word of mouth!
@@jamieroundtheworld it also changes expectations (hey, maybe I don't want a card that probably won't biodegrade for thousands of years). It may take decades, but it does trickle through and change behaviour.
It may also make people wonder, hey, what are banks actually doing with my money? (answer: hijacking society)
