    Nike shoes boutta be banned for actually delivering on what they advertised: making you run faster.

      Well you can buy golf balls that don't slice/ travel further, but they're not legal for competition. Running should be the same way.

      Patrick Lemire golf is skill based though. Running is a more physical sport about pushing the bodies to the absolute limit of running. By this logic all shoes should be allowed because its a slight benefit. Thats kinda like banning spikes on a track. Should we ban spikes and these shoes. I don’t think so

    I see no issue as long as no outside energy is input into the system. Innovation is good for sports.

    • @tejasmanem
      @tejasmanem 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Nah there has to be a limit. Like compare it to a bicycle, yes there is no outside energy being put into the system, but the bicycle offers a mechanical advantage. likewise adding springs/bouncing with the carbon fiber plates is a running equivalent to mechanical advantages
      It's interesting to think about how previous world record holders would have performed if they had this shoe before, its hard to tell

    • @sams.1597

      Tejas Manem what if world record holders of the 1970s had the racing shoes of 2005 or runners from 1930 running in 1970s waffles? I wonder how they would have performed?

    • @patricklemire9278
      @patricklemire9278 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elite runners are so efficient the shoes were mainly as protection. Runners used to wear sneakers, or leather shoes that looked almost like dress shoes. The main innovation of the 70's was light weight nylon and EVA midsoles that allowed less efficient runners pile up miles. This new generation are different they're actually creating a mechanical effect like a mild pogo stick.

    The runers in the video all have nearly flawless foot-placement mechanics. I wonder if there is a correlation between any benefit provided by the shoes and an athlete's running mechanics.

    • @ytbaccount87
      @ytbaccount87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just look at a large marathon, at 30k 90% of the people running in these shoes start running wonky because they can no longer use proper technique. You lose a lot of the benefit of these shoes if you cannot manage at least a midfoot landing. It is great marketing by Nike, but these shoes really only help if you are already a very proficient runner. I would love to try the trainer variant to see if that problem is minimized there.

    • @brandonchism6960
      @brandonchism6960 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The issue with your very correct observation is people aren’t interested in hearing they should work on their form. They would much rather spend $200-$500 on a shoe that says it will decrease their times and make them more efficient. And much like Nike captured the market with Jordan, LeBron, Deion Sanders, and Griffey Jr. (all great athletes with shoe lines that continue to sell well); they’ve managed to outfit the best runners in their products. Therefore they will absolutely continue to sell and be on a large portion of the running populace’s feet.

      @@brandonchism6960 . I think you're 100% correct. I'm personally not a competitive runner but I do enjoy running mid distances. This is the first time in about a decade that I'm excited to buy a new pair of running shoes. If I can afford this new Nikes I will get them if only because the pure enjoyment I already get from running will be enhanced. Maybe the shoes will motivate me to take on competitive running. But I do you think you're very correct. Its like anything else. Think about drugs for example. People want to take a pill to fix everything from obesity to mental health.

    Thinking about the popularity of these shoes its insane. I was at University Of Tampa this Saturday for a meet. I had some teammates in the 5k, we’re an Adidas sponsored school so they were wearing Adidas spikes, pretty typical and the spikes we have are nice you know. There were three heats of the 5k at this meet, 91 kids in total. I counted at least 52 kids wearing the vaporflys or next %’s. The meet has historically had a pretty fast 5k, but that night was easily the fastest the meet has ever been, 19 kids went under 15 minutes and 12 were 14:50 or better with the winner running 14:22. It was weird seeing all these kids wearing them, my coach and I had an interesting conversation about them. We both agreed while maybe the science does back up the increase in running economy to an extent, I feel like the biggest thing when it comes to these shoes is the mental aspect. You’re wearing the same shoes Kipchoge wore when he broke the 2 hour barrier, if he can run fast in them then why obviously why cant I? At the sametime its quite annoying when all people talk about it seems like are the shoes. Totally discredits the work athletes put in to run the times that they do.

  • @fernandoserrano9393
    @fernandoserrano9393 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are shoes similar to these Nike shoes. Spira makes shoes with metal springs in the soles. They increase the force return from landing more than regular shoes. Since they have springs, they have never been allowed in sanctioned events. The Nike shoes are a roundabout way of doing the same thing, using the the carbon fiber plate and the front two round parts instead of metal springs.

    No shoe can return more energy to your stride. That would be against the laws of physics. Energy is always dissipated - especially by foam padding in the sole. Carbon fibre is very light and would help stabilise your foot. But, so what? These shoes shouldn't be made illegal. The new regulations have gone from being vague and meaningless to very particular but arbitrary. The perfect footwear would be none at all - no weight to carry and no padding to soak up the energy which ought to be propelling you forward. Only Abebe Bikila, as far as I know, has run an Olympic marathon barefoot. He won gold, by the way.
    I'm sure these shoes are extremely light and extremely comfortable. But I bet a lot of money is changing hands to get them worn.

    I don't think the shoes are giving any unfair advantage. Nike Shoes are just better at returning the forces applied by the Athletes. The Controversy is unnecessary. It's just that they are super expensive and new athletes can not afford them.

      Yes, the idea of banning them is silly. What next? Ban synthetic tracks? Foam pole vault and high jump pits? Fiberglass pole-vault poles? Should Roger Bannisters long spikes have been banned? Maybe all shoes weighing under, say, 12 ounces, should be banned from races. Speaking of bans, let's ban the term "mechanical doping." Nikes shoes in no way constitute doping, and to imply they do is nothing more than a cheap smear.

      Well, the original olympic rules were unbeatable in technical department:
      Naked (100%) and same premade equipment for any sport needing such, like spears and discos. This would also make the female sports more popular then the male ones.

  • @CuanWalker
    @CuanWalker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video but there any many errors....
    Kenenisa in 2016 Berlin was wearing vaporfly 4% and Eliud in 2016 London was wearing the first version of the Nike vaporfly prototype which was on a thicker streak midsole with the plate embedded in it. You also mention the vaporfly elite at the time was illegal for international competition... it wasn't... Kipchoge used it in Berlin 2017 and onwards
    The vaporfly elite you posted at 08:01 is also a fake pair those aren't real :) When you showed the vaporfly 4% Flyknit you mentioned it had react foam of which it doesn't... the midsole is full zoom x. Kipchoge also didn't use this shoe in his world record. He had the same upper but the new vaporfly next% midsole which was a slight update to the vaporfly elite midsole from breaking 2. The 4% model you show at 08:54 is also a fake pair. You can tell by the stitching at the back of the upper.

    Nike must be loving all this publicity, in a pair of totally overpriced shoes, that provide little or no performance advantage to their wearer.
    How convenient, both the current Mens and Womens Marathon Record holders, are sponsored by Nike, so its obvious they will wear their sponsors clothing and footwear.
    Shoe technology might provide a tiny benefit, for over all foot comfort, but its Eluid Kipchoge and Brigid Koskeis athletic ability, that makes them World Record holders in the marathon.
    There are some misguided runners, with deep pockets, who think if they spend hundreds on these racing shoes, then they will run faster.
    Its the specific training you do, that makes you a faster runner, not the shoes you wear

    Everyone should have to run in combat boots on a cinder track. Shoe technology doesn’t make anyone faster, it just makes you slow down less.
