    Brad portrayed perfectly the rollercoaster of any creative project. You start happy and excited, then you become absolutely maniac, and then you accept the outcome whatever it is, you just want to finish it at this point

    Thoughts as a former ballroom dancer:
    1. We’d carefully blow dry it to get the glue to dry faster and exactly how we wanted it.
    2. The hair colors recommended for dancers were jet black, bleach blonde, or bold red.
    3. We used lice combs to get it really sleek.
    4. Ballroom hair trends are a legit thing. And different hairstyles are popular depending on which style of dance you do.
    5. If the hair is in a hanging braid, dancers would typically safety pin their hair to their dresses to prevent it from hitting themselves or their partners.
    6. The trick with the rhinestones is to put them the right distance from each other. A lot of people place them too close at first.
    7. For your first time doing ballroom hair, good job Brad! 😊

    These competitions last for a weekend to over a week. They will sweat and sleep with this hairdo throughout the competition, usually a few days before and after the competition. So whatever needs to be done to shalack that hairdo in place, they will use it! In the early years, like the 50s and 60s when my mom and dad competed in these, my mom said her hair would go three shades lighter with the amount of powder they used in her hair. Back then, if they couldn't afford gel, they would use homemade sugar syrup on their hair, douse it with powder, and then use two cans of hairspray!

    Hi Brad! I’ve had this hairstyle done for ballroom competition before, and they use gel first to make the waves, then Bobby pin it in place, then hairspray it. It cost me $115-$125 depending on the stylist, and they’re done in 20-30 minutes! And if they use too much hairspray, it ends up flaking all over your head and shoulders!

  • @groovydakota
    @groovydakota หลายเดือนก่อน +40

    Ballroom dancer here 🙋🏼‍♀️, I’m so ready for this !
    Also just to explain why we use so much spray and gel, is 1, ballroom is 5-10 dance styles and you repeat all of those dances 3-6 times , so in 1 competition you can effectively be sweating and dancing up to 60 dances not including warm up etc
    Also! The shiny wet gel look is part of the competitive look, a way to stand out be more shiny more tanned, better dress etc etc

      Our updos for school dances in the early 2000s were nearly this secure. I would remove all the pins, cut any elastics, and then soak the hair in the bath until I could run my fingers through it. Then, the shampoos and conditioners started. I had hair to my waist and this took a couple of hours. There was no way I was letting fancy hair in my bed. Glitter hairspray was THE thing.

    My big question: HOW DO YOU GET ALL OF THAT STUFF OUT?!?!?! I used to do gymnastics, and the competition girls never used anything close to this. Maybe a little hairspray or gel. But nothing even a fraction of this. I mean I know it goes with the territory. It's part of the style of dance, just like the costumes/dresses are. So, I get that. Clarifying shampoo and conditioner will not get this out. And we all thought trying to get certain dyes out of our hair was a challenge.
    There should be a part 2 to this video: how to take out ballroom hair, and get all the products out

      i did 10 years of competitive ballroom & latin dance. in the shower, you try and take it apart as best you can under hot water, and conditioner can help loosen it up too. then multiple (3-5) rounds of shampoo, and more conditioner because your hair is not in the greatest shape after all the product and multiple shampoo rounds 😅

    • @The_Lizard_Queen
      @The_Lizard_Queen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +58

      I did ballroom and Latin for 7 years. I would soak my hair in hot water to soften the hair product, then put a crap ton of untangling hair conditioner. Then I would shampoo 5 or 6 times, and then I would put a deep conditioner on and leave it for 1/2 hour, and finally followed by a good leave-in conditioner. The whole process took about 2 hours. I believe the 7 years of torture my hair went through is the reason why my hairline is now thin and uneven.

      I've scrolled a bit and haven't seen this question yet : why ? Why SO MUCH ? I'm not criticizing, it's a genuine question. For example it seems like ballet dancers don't put so much gel (but I could be completely mistaken, I'm not a dancer at all and only see what's portrayed and social media), and yet they do a lot of turns and stuff so they also need their hair to stay put. So why that ungodly amount ? ^^
      It looks amazing and so creative though!

    • @ThatAuthorGirl
      @ThatAuthorGirl 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      @@zaza7594 because the competition is fierce 😅 I mean, there's a few reasons, honestly. Yes, there are a LOT of spins, sometimes flips and tricks (depending on the dance style), but also, the hair has to last aaallllll day. Like, I'm talkin' 4am to 10 or 11pm. So, a lot of dancers nap between, and you don't want to have to constantly fix your hair. Plus, if your hair falls out of place on the dance floor or a pin goes flying, it could cost you the competition. With everyone else being literal perfection, every tiny thing counts. So, not to say you *will* lose if your hair comes out of place (even a little) but if two couples dance perfectly, but one has a pin fly out towards the judges, the other couple will win. And the final reason is that the gel allows for some super cool designs without the need for more pins or clips, and it adds a killer shine. We looovvve some good shine and sparkle ✨️

      I used to do ballroom dancing myself. As much as I loved the look of the hairstyles I absolutely DETESTED taking them down. It’s the same technique for both dance and swim. It was like taking down concert walls with just water. I had to spray the top layer with hot water and cheap hair spray. Then pick that apart. And you keep doing that until you get to your scalp. Then you wash your hair with hot water and clarifying shampoo twice before using a conditioning one.

    I just subscribed to you..... The reason is watching you is like going to an amusement park, and riding the highest roller coaster.
    Last week I found you reacting to people doing their own hair, you freaking happy laughing my ass off. Talking about how they don't prepare ahead of time and watch enough videos.
    And then what happens today, lo and behold here you are, not prepared, and not watching enough videos!😅😅
    So yes you got my vote!!🎉

    Ballroom dancers also use a product called Mirror Effect By Silkry Dance on Top of your hair after you dry the spray with blow dryer, that gives even MORE glossy effect but you can’t comb through it

    This reminds me SO MUCH of trying to get my hair into a slick, frizz-free, no-flyaways bun for ROTC when I was in college. Having your hair damp but not wet helps the gel “melt” into the hair and harden a little more slowly so you can keep combing it smooth after working the gel in, and dampenjng the hair can help straighten out curls (just like during haircuts) so you get a nice slick look even if your hair really wants to curl.

    I compete in ballroom dancing. To make my life even easier I do my own hair… 😅 The first step of slicking it back is easier if you get the product into the roots all over first, not just on top. Use mousse, gel, or hairspray, or even all 3! I use the Got2BGlued hairspray, it’s amazing! Use a hairdryer on cool to set it. And to take it out… run a hot bath and let your head soak for a good 5-10 minutes before you try and take out any hairnets or pins to prevent breakage. Then wash as usual.

    I had to do this type of hairstyle for my 9 year old granddaughter for her gymnastics competition. My son just showed me a picture and gave me the products and said it has to be exactly like the picture or she would be marked down or possibly not even allowed to compete. I had no idea how to use these products, knew nothing about hairdressing, had no gloves no where to wash my hands except for a bottle of water I had in my bag. I had 30 mins to get this done outside sitting on a picnic table! By some miracle I got it done somehow and she got full points for it. Lol I never what to see that gel ever again! Her hair was as hard as a rock and fully expected a great challenge in getting it washed out but it washed out surprisingly easy.

    Watching this is hilarious, I used to do ballroom and latin dances younger and I could give Brad Mondo advice on how to do it... 🤣🤣🤣 but actually you did a good job for a first timer!
    Use gel to shaping (it doesn't dry as fast) and spray to fix it in place.
    Competition hair needs to hold sometimes days and usually you need to sleep with it so it needs to be rock hard. And in the competition it has to deal with the heat and sweat and possible encounters with others and you need to change dresses etc... So the hair goes through a lot. 😀
    😀

    I did ballroom dancing from 14 to 21. Let me tell you, sometimes my hair was so hard that I could probably crack a diamond on it.
    After years of putting my hair through torture, I decided on NO updos when I got married. Instead, I left my hair loose and cascading in my natural curl. Unfortunately, those 7 years of pulling my hair back so tight, is the reason why my hairline is now thinned and uneven.
    BTW, love the red hair on you, Brad!
