Brad, not only the changing the curl pattern. Us black and dpanish girls grew up with relaxer in our hair and ruining our hair for our whole lives until we did a big chop. This is the biggest reason why its so emotional for them but also us watching.

That first part! I remember getting my first relaxer and feeling bald bc my hair was so flat! It broke off then came the braids with extensions then the weave ponytails and later track extensions and since I had gray hair (family genetics, we don’t know why but no deficiencies 🤷🏽♀️) I was allowed to use dye before the end of middle school. By 21 I was over it and did the big chop. My hair grew sooo long in the next few yrs! By 25, bra strap length! Now since im older, I embrace the gray and keep a nice long bob as a judgmental rich auntie should 😂 I kept with the straightening, but no chemicals. Just blown out monthly with pin curls or body wrap.
Female POC here! Thank you for mentioning the relaxer/natural hair discourse in the video. The conversation gets a little more complicated when you see how the chemicals in relaxers are starting to affect black women as well (they’re starting to link certain cancers to relaxers). It’s also worth mentioning that there are only 23 states in the U.S. that have laws preventing hair discrimination, so many employers require “professional” hairstyles in the workplaces (straight hair, no braids, no locs) and you can be fired for not abiding. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend watching the Good Hair documentary by Chris Rock. A little older but a lot of good perspectives and information included! Thank you for always looking to educate others and yourself! 🫶🏽

It blows my mind that in 2024 there are still companies in the US that try to dictate how a female employee looks beyond "clean and appropriately professional". The problem, of course, is what some people determine to be professional. As a white woman who has unfortunately been plagued with self-esteem issues and the need to be a people pleaser, I have not personally had to deal with this type of discrimination (other than being a woman in the first place). Discrimination of any type makes me so angry.

I cannot wait to see the world in ten years. I know we are moving away from those outdated rules as our aged CEOs retire and let younger CEOs take over and change the rules to be more accepting (like at the most bare minimum level, the bar is in hell: rolling my eyes) of all people regardless of sex or color.
Brad’s commentary on relaxer vs straight was brilliant. I have healthy hair and most people don’t know when it’s relaxed or I just pressed it in between relaxers. It’s crazy how nasty people get. As a beauty professional, I have to work with it all, but some people get very personal about other people’s choices.
I stopped getting relaxers 2015, I got tired of scalp burns and dry scalp. When I went natural, I felt free and my scalp was way healthier. I'm glad I went natural!
I went natural as well, and I’ve been that way for about 30 years. I started getting scalp and hair damage. My other concerns was all the information out there identifying them as endocrine disruptor and linking relaxers to cancer.

I get salon relaxers now because I got tired of doing it myself but I don't think people realize how much work it takes to do it yourself and that's why most get it on the scalp especially when you're working against time. It's definitely a learning process to get your system down tight. Loved your reactions, Brad. 💜
Yes I bleached a small section at the front of my hair to the root to dye it hot pink. It took SO long and I had to be totally invested in the process to be sure my very dark type 4 hair lifted evenly and to blond because I didn't want an orange or copper based. I don't think I have the patience to do even a quarter of my head.
And it seems most people don't realize how dangerous and corrosive the chemicals are. Some of it gets to the scalp

He's so right, as a 42 yr old white woman who can't even French braid I have always been amazed by black women and their skills with hair but especially braids, I have seen braids that were actual works of art 🥲 I also appreciate the pain tolerance involved, I let a friend practice extension braids on my thick ass hair when I was a teenager and it took almost 5 hours, I still vividly remember trying to sleep that night and my scalp felt like a giant bruise, I couldn't lay down 😭 she got the photos she needed the next day and I cut them out immediately, so much relief...
The struggle is real, Brad was worried about relaxer on the scalp but I think he underestimated what a black woman's scalp can tolerate lololol
I've always dipped in and out of Brad's channel, this is my first video in a while and i have to say I'm really impressed with his knowledge on relaxers and black hair in general.

Man!! When it takes over 2 hours to detangle, wash,and condition I can't help but remember how I could do all this plus blow dry and flat iron/curl in that same amount of time 😂😂😂😂
I just turn wash days into a vibe. I get into it, enjoy the hot shower, put on some podcasts while I detangle and condition. At the end of it, I get amazingly beautiful coils. My relaxed hair could never.

Hm. It does not take me 2 hours to wash my hair! My hair isn't white people long but it's healthy and full and yea.. it takes like 30 minutes max. I don't detangle for too long because girl... our hair is curly. It with curl onto itself tomorrow lol. I'd just be ripping it out if I combed it even more. I'm all about simple. I'm Nigerian. As a white woman, I have wondered about that. I see so many weaves, or straightened, and I think, ‘doesn’t that look like white hair?’ I can only imagine the emotions that brings up.
Even with my wavy hair, I’ve sometimes envied the flat ironed styles, but I also appreciate when our hair can do what n one else’s can do, and that’s what I absolutely love about natural black hair. Black girl hair done right is majestic.
@christinamann3640 the thing is, many black women such as myself were pressured to get relaxers at such an early age (I was 4) because it was the only way our was accepted. This was especially true for me because I had a biracial mom who didn't know how to deal with my extremely thick and coily hair. So the natural hair movement started where we learned to appreciate the hair we were born with which was good, but the issue came when that became the standard and then it was essentially the same problem all over again where your hair is being dictated by others.
The point of the natural hair movement was for us to learn more about out hair in general so knowing the risks that comes with relaxers opposed to it just being pushed on you without much say

@469ka37 luckily it wasn't as bad for me but my mom didn't know what to do with my hair bc I was the only person with curly hair in my Hispanic family. Always told I looked unkempt and that I needed to brush my hair. It really puts you down when your natural self is denied and seen as 'not good enough'.

The stigma around relaxing is real, but also the chemicals are really dangerous. Even Brad expresses concern by saying it reminds him of acid. I do agree that it is your life and your hair so do whatever your heart desires!
There’s a lawsuit going around right now saying relaxers have been related to causing uterine cancers. . . Do your own research on that one though.

Except there are parents who use them on their children and the kids have no say about it. A former coworker told me she got her first relaxer at age 2 which I had never heard of. That’s crazy and child abuse IMO.
@@anndeecosita3586I agree. That IS child abuse. Relaxers should have a surgeon general warning and legal age just like cigarettes, since they both contain lethal substances that cause life threatening diseases.
I haven’t relaxed my hair in over 20 years. I am much happier.
I would love to see Brad collab sometimes with an expert hairdresser who can chime in with information when it’s a process he’s less familiar with so we can all learn best practices together.

The first lady with the very long hair looked STUNNING with straight hair, it looked beautiful when she took it down and was still curly but when it was straight she looked like a different woman. Absolutely gorgeous, ALL 3, their hair is so beautiful.
I wasn't sure if she used neutralizing shampoo though..but her hair surprisingly came out very nice!

It's interesting to see how they are all so happy in the end. I'm not black but I have naturally curly/wavy hair and I always had so much trouble with it. Never really liked how I look with the curls. And then I decided to straighten it, and I was so in love! I'm in my straight hair phase right now, and maybe someday I'll go back to natural, but I think we should always prioritize what makes us feel better about ourselves!
Yesss I hate when people tell me I need to embrace my natural hair. taking care of curly hair can be expensive and time consuming!! We should be doing what we love and what makes us feel good. I have curly hair and I like my curly hair but I like it straight too and people are always making comments shaming me for straightening it. 🤦♀️

When I was relaxed, I did both finger and brush applications, and they came out perfect. The last girl's problem was that she did not use enough relaxer on her sections. Her hair is too thick for that little bit. She needed a really good coating.

I’m so late to reply! But, I have never relaxed my hair and I can FEEL IT! I can feel my scalp burning as if I just put alcohol in my wounds, I can feel my scalp notching as if I just put itching power in my clothes😭!

In high school I had a stylist relax and bleach my hair in one day. Within a week it all fell out. Haven’t colored or relaxed my hair since. I have THICK beautiful, curly hair but I can’t say that I don’t miss color from time to time.

Rinsing out the relaxer early isn’t bad… just loosens the curl pattern vs fully straightening. It’s all preference and is one of the coolest parts of a relaxer to me
She actually did a terrible job. She needed to get a few tutorials under her belt because when she washed her hair BEFORE the relaxer and I'm glad she didn't damage her scalp. Her application was poor also. Im glad it turned out okay, but it could've been so much worse.
no. that just looks a mess. if you want to loosen curls a relaxer isn’t for you because you’re not loosening anything, you’re straightening them out, and you get stragglers. that’s what a texturizer is for.

I think it's great self care to style your hair to match desired maintenance. Straight hair is easier to manage for some, other like curly, braids, dreads, wigs, shaved, etc.

To add to your relaxer education Brad, there’s also a fibreguard relaxer that even more gentle than a no lye relaxer. I switched my relaxer to fibreguard last year when I switched hair dressers because there’s no way I’m attempting relaxing my hair by myself and my hair still has curls in it but just looser because I like having the option of both

Hi Brad, I love that you acknowledge when you don’t know something but are willing to learn. Most people think that we get relaxers to be European-ish but that’s not true. When you have like 4C or a tight curl pattern it takes insanely amounts of time and products to manage your hair. My daughter’s hair wash day can take 4 hours even at a salon because her curls starts to tighten as soon as air hits it. It will be dry at the ends but not at the roots. My hair does that so I have it kind of short.
And people either forget or are ignorant of the history of bw having to straighten their hair due to things like workplace discrimination.
@@greenytaddict Not only in history. Look at recently how many stories there are of kids/teenagers getting suspended from school because of wearing their natural hair.
But it does have more to do with looking European tho, since our natural hair is not accepted in society. And we also have conditioned ourselves to not like our natural hair as well.

With the third girl, when you were talking about how the roots should be done last, I had a flashback to all the times you talked about hair bleaching and doing the roots last. That actually makes the most sense when it comes to a lot of hair processes, as well as not adding heat as it can cause problems.
i've been using the relaxer "Just For Me" since I was a child, i'm 33 now and it's the only relaxer i trust tbh and THE ONLY PERSON I TRUST TO RELAX MY HAIR IS MY MOM so watching these gives me soooo much anxiety. i would never ever ever do my hair myself so kudos to these people doing it themselves but OMG.

As an african i prefer using the child relaxer kit just because when im doing it by myself it takes time and the child kit is more forgiving on how long you can leave it in so it really helps that it doesnt immediately start relaxing while im still trying to ut sections and really get it in everywhere not to mention if i mess up im able to go straight in with round two instead of having to either risk it over relaxing and falling out or wating two days.

@@lapatti I know dark and lovely does that's the only brand I use not sure about other relaxer brands 😂 honestly my sculp is also way to sensitive to use regular relaxer it starts burning even before it's done its proper work and if I allow it to sit the whole time I end up getting sores from the burns
I am a caucasian woman with pin straight hair. I understand you wanting to change your hair. I have put perms in my hair to make it curly. I will never do it again. It's ironic how I want curls and you want straight hair.

As a chemist, you are correct. Oils do not have much of an effect on reducing the strength of relaxers. It’s usually sodium hydroxide based. Which is a super strong base… it will eat through anything.
I LOVE watching these videos of beautiful black women taking care of their hair. I have 4 black granddaughters, and I know what a process taking care of their hair is, hence RESPECT!!!
The second woman may have applied in that order depending on how coarse that part of her hair is. Afro hair can have multiple texture types.
When I used to get relaxers, the middle of my head was by far the coarsest and took the longest time to process. We always ended up waiting for it to be done enough, even risking the rest being overdone because of it.
Yes you are correct. That's why I applied it to the crown first. My hair is the most Coarse in that area.
My hair took longer to process and it’s fine. The reason was that my hair is low porosity which makes it slower to absorb. I always got my hair relaxed by professionals and was still left with scabs sometimes. they would want to leave it in even when I was burning because the processing was slow.
I used to relax my hair in the back. After becoming natural I learned that section is on the looser side. I should not have been doing that lol no wonder my hair struggling in the back.

I’m white (with wavy hair) and I wanted straight hair so bad as a teen my mom took me to a salon to get a relaxer. I would be too scared to do it at home. These people were very brave doing it themselves. Doing black hair is an art in itself and I admire the dedication it takes to produce so many styles. I can barely get my hair into a ponytail without having to clip the short layers back.
I watch Brad's videos to either be in complete awe of gorgeous hair or to be absolutely horrified by fails. There is no in-between.
After watching brads videos i realise how is important to have your hair looking good. Its so much influence on your mood and self confidence

Yeah hearing Brad talking about the brush scraping the scalp triggered relaxer memories. I don't miss it and will probably only straighten my hair out with a silk press.
Relaxer are not Hamful you are only supposed to relaxer your hair once very for month s I have healthy long relaxed hair I do protective hair styles relaxed hair can be healthy like natural hair

One; all these girls are so brave. The idea of home relaxing or perming both scare the crap out of me.
Two; I’m not black, but I do have curly hair, which I choose to straighten most of the time (not chemically) and what Brad said about the EFFORT to have good, detangled, styled, curly hair is bonkers compared to not curly. Whenever I do choose to allow my curls out, so many people are like “wow, why don’t you just always do that, it’s so pretty “ …. Cause it takes like, 4 times as long 😅
I have wavy hair. It's actually faster for me to just curl it with a curling iron or overnight heatless curls than to do the curly method that makes my natural wave pattern look good. Like 1/2 the time.

@@PrettyGirlPretty11 I think she meant the chemical burns that can happen with doing bleaching/perming at home. They are way stronger than just coloring. I don't care if im coloring it, because if its uneven its uneven 🤷♀️ but if I knew I could burn my scalp with coloring I wouldn't do it eather, thats just something im not willing to risk
I am black and only go natural in the summer because of the work when it's curly. I can blow-dry and flat iron my hair which will take me 4 hours, but then for 2 weeks all I have to do to style is put a brush through it. I can do my curly hair quicker, but I have to do it much more consistently and deal with the moods my hair is in everyday.

We start at the top of our hair because of the thickness closer to the scalp. We know that closer to the head is hotter which is why we do it do that we can get our hair straighter Brad.

As an African American woman, it’s so beautiful to see the amount of healing that has taken place among our culture. We’re finally finding a way to love ourselves instead of constantly staying damaged. I love to see it for my people. 🫶🏽
If there's one thing Brad's videos have taught me, it's to support my local hairdressers by having my hair done professionally so I won't end up with regrets. Thanks, Brad! (I'm sure my hairdresser is grateful too.)
I’m only half way through and I want to say Mondo is a great example of a brand doing well within a niche, the commentary on The Black community specifically the Black American 12:37 community and our journey with our hair was very appropriate and spot on

This first girl who relaxed and colored her hair did a great job. Her hair is so strong to have withstood all those heavy-duty chemicals. My hair would have broken off or melted. Your looks so beautiful, shiny, and amazing!!!
I am a black woman who has had relaxers since I was younger and now wear my natural hair. For me, I was constantly told that my natural hair was not school/work appropriate. Not just by white people. I am one of the few whose hair is difficult to relax, even when using super relaxers. So, having spent a lot of money to straighten my hair, then having to put heat on it daily to upkeep it, only for bosses, teachers, even principals to say that it is still not acceptable was extremely painful. I finally got sick of it and chopped it all off. I found the strength to accept my hair as it grew, and stand up to my boss, my professors at college, and the family members whose mindset was stuck in the past. It took a lot of self searching, and a willingness to believe in myself, all while getting negativity from others on a daily basis. If you have never been through something like that, then it is very difficult to understand. A lot of women have it a lot harder than I did. I, thankfully, did not loose my job over it, but I was talked to at my college about what is considered "professional" as someone entering the field of education. Even with all of that I kept my hair natural. So, a lot of women and men, especially those of color, receive constant backlash for wearing their hair the way that God made it, a simple right that every person should have. To them a relaxer isn't just about doing what you want with your hair, it is about being forced to change yourself into what others deem is acceptable, while at the same time denying your right to just be human like everyone else. I know that it shouldn't be a big deal, but it still is. In a lot of places, kids still get expelled from school for not straightening their hair, people loose their jobs because of it. So it can be a sensitive subject. I believe that people should have the right to do what they want with their hair, but even in the USA that is not something that everyone has the privilege to do.
I would like to know where these schools are and places of education that attacked you for natural hair. I have been in education all my life and have never seen, heard, or read of this anywhere. If you tell us the name of this place, we will be happy to yank their sorry, you know what's into the world of today!
What type of hair would you say you have. I honestly think more textures then 4a-4c i have c coils but get told , its not 4 in texture but thick . Its weird ti describe but Ive always got told that i have , “Good Hair “ my hair is a very soft thick but coily curly and shrinks like crazy .
Wow ! I couldn’t imagine a boss or a workmate nor a YT person a telling me that my hair is unacceptable . What exactly would they have an issues with? Im very curious to know what type of hair doesn’t relax or straighten to the point that someone still thinks your hair is inappropriate?

As a hairstylist’s daughter, I would recommend to go to a professional when you’re relaxing your hair. It’s one of those things that need to be done by professionals 100%!

I remember my mother trying to use a relaxer on my hair in the 90s (Romani+Irish heritage...or hair-itage, if you will). It massively didn't do anything, just made it even more frizzy than normal. Massive shout out to all the curly geniuses online who have shown me and so many others how to actually take care of super curly hair! 💙

@@Ashley-tk5we black women aren't the only ones with curly or kinky hair, nor have they been the only ones to show how to manage it. There's plenty of black women included in that group, true, but, no, I meant what I said. Especially given that, because my texture doesn't allow for it, a lot of the protective styles shown by black women don't stay put in my hair without an elastic or clip. Luckily there's plenty of white, West-Asian, and native folk (not just women) who have my same texture and have shown people like me how to manage it.
It is a well known fact that black women taught non blacks how to take care of their hair. Curly hair is universal, not going to argue that point.

Fact: The day I went back to natural was when a relaxer dulldozed through my edges. I prayed to Black Jesus that if he gave me my edges back, I would never relax again. The edges returned, and we lived nappily ever after. 🥰
What did you do to regrow your edges please ?
@@S.daniella Honestly, I just crossed my fingers and left them alone. I didn’t use any products or home remedies, I just left my edges absolutely alone. No brushing, no braids, I just let them grow and made sure my bonnet that wasn’t too tight around my edges at night, and hoped they came back. I didn’t have excessive prolonged damage, so they were able to grow back. They’re still not as full as they were, but they’re here, and I’ll never them for granted again.

As a 45 year old woman who has shoulder length hair i have been getting relaxers since i was 12 years old and I've also been using hot tools on my hair ( both the curling & flat irons) but with the new year coming in literally less than a few hours I'm going to seriously start my new experiment of no longer playing at home beautician ( meaning no longer flat ironing my hair myself) just to see if it bothers to grow or will it be stuck at shoulder length forever🤔

I swear the flashbacks of my mom perming my hair immediately surfaces and I could feel the burning sensation on my head. I admonish these women but I went natural in 2017 and I can't look back. They're beautiful women with beautiful hair ❤
That first lady looks soo pretty with her hair! I dont have curly hair but i agree with the "i just feel happier" because i had hair down to my butt and i got it cut a little above my shoulders and it felt so good to get it chopped all off. Some people dont realise just how heavy hair can be and that when you get your hair cut it feels so good 😂
I don't do relaxers anymore because I went natural like 5 years ago. After years of getting them done and doing them on others, I definitely got to the point I was doing my own. Honestly, they are not really complicated and can definitely be done at home
I get what you’re saying about who cares but I think the important thing to remember is that a lot of curly haired people straighten their hair because they don’t feel confident or they’re lead to believe that their curls aren’t polished and professional. I’m mixed with very curly hair and was adopted by 2 white parents, growing up surrounded by white people I was always under the impression that straight hair was pretty and every time I straightened my hair everyone told me how pretty I looked so I kept doing it. 4 years ago I was done so I shaved my head and started from scratch and now my curls are back and healthy and finally getting the time to shine that they deserve. Happy black history month!

The first girl looked SO good after, and not even because the hair is straight. She had clearly gotten to the point that a lot of us reach where her hair had been a certain way for a long time. It was damaged, she was uninspired, and she just let it fall to the wayside because she didn’t know what to do to make herself feel good about her hair. Then she put time, money, thought, and effort into doing something different and invested in a change for herself, and it looks like it just gave her some new life and confidence! Natural or relaxed hair, she looks so good because she feels good about herself!!!
