    We've spent a day with animation film director Hiroyasu Ishida, after wrapping up production for his latest film: Drifting Home.
    As the first creator who joined Studio Colorido, Ishida looks back at his career and works, from his short debut "Fumiko no Kokuhaku" made in university, to his first feature-length film "Penguin Highway", and his thoughts towards the upcoming "Drifting Home", releasing this September.
    Thanks to SubTube for the Portuguese (BR) subtitles and to Salma Sayed, Rana Khaled, Mariam Ehab and Alper Magdy for the Arabic subtitles!

    Ishida is absolutely brilliant. He just has this perspective on youth and emotions that is extremely unique. He just gets something that not a lot of people get, and somehow finds creative ways to express those things through animation. The fact that he spoke so long about his characters as if they were real people - and as almost a parallel to his own struggles - emphasizes that raw creative imagination he has. The lens he views things through is on an entirely different level. It's oddly practical, and immersive, and I really cherish that about all his works. Definitely one of the best directors in the industry, hands down.

    I second others' feelings here: it's always a pleasure to watch one of your videos. The interviews are always very intimate and often show how difficult it can be to create long-goal projects. I personally love to work quick on small projects and enjoy them. I always felt that long term works require a lot more dedication... and suffering. Your videos often point that and I'm grateful for the artists that you interview to be sincere and humble, rather than "raving" about their stuff. It's a refreshing change from all these internet videos that only focus on quantity, productivity, "success", occulting the less enjoyable parts of every creative project. Thank you for sharing this!

And the characters you invite are very interesting people who are pleasant to listen to. It was very interesting to find out that in the head of the man who created the delightful anime "Penguin Highway", unexpectedly, that he has many more wonderful works. Thank you, Archipel, for another masterpiece. Thanks to you, my day has become better!

  • @rubisdrake

    Another fantastic video. You can really tell that this person is fueled passionately by creating wonderful stories about childhood and overcoming obstacles, and will even go out of his way to surround himself in the very environments that his movies take place in. That is dedication! I haven't seen his works yet, bit I'm very interested now.
    Uh, feel free to ignore this request, but... I have been curious if you, or the team, (forgive me, I don't know which it is) Archipel, would be willing to cover more animators or directors that work on the "furry" or Kemono (獣人) scene. I feel like this type of content and coverage is lacking, and I would love to know more about this side of culture in Japan. I know the subject of kemono is a touchy and too on the nose for people trying to compare it to furry... But still, I think it's important to cover a whole broad area of topics!
    I can only imagine how much work and time it takes to find these great people to talk to, establish a business or personal relationship with them in order to entice them for being interviewed and filmed in the first place, and then do all the editing and video work that goes on in these videos, which is why I was hesitant to ask anything in the first place...
    One such person I was thinking of was Shin'ichi Matsumi. He is the director of Beastars, and also helped with Pom Poko, one of my favorite movies of all time from Studio Ghibi, and Porco Rosso (which I have not seen yet). Technically, Pom Poko was directed by Isao Takahata, but he was the assistant director for it.
    I could list other favorite kemono-related movies from Japan, such as BNA - Brave New Animal, Wolf Children, etc...
    There's Masaya Fujimori, an art director known for directing some Pokemon Movies, Zorro and You Are Umasou series. Not saying that Pokemon and You Are Umasou are very kemono-related. I would consider Zorori more of that, but the other two are not, but may be watched by kemono/furry fans at least. I think "kemono" culture strictly revolves around the main characters and focus of the show being this way, as a general theme? Not sure. Because in America, furry is also a theme and trying to be more culturally significant now. It's not just a fandom anymore... And I unfortunately know too much about the various sides of the furry fandom. Lol.
    In Japan, the kemono scene may be different than what I'm used to. I'd like to be educated more about it, especially the history of kemono, and if it may ever grow up to be as big of a scene as furry has become now. It's all interesting stuff to me. Let me know what you think!
    If the directors are too high profile to be able to be contacted easily for interview, then I'd be find just seeing interviews from animators and artists that draw kemono. It's always a treat seeing your videos. So thank you very much for them.

    • @ArchipelDocumentaries
      @ArchipelDocumentaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and for the kind word. To be fully honest we're not too familiar with the kemono scene, but we'll be looking into it 👍
