I love Saito's mindset so much. Thinking that failing to reproduce is your style - that even if you can't draw what's exactly in your head, it's part of that flow to the story and belongs in it. It's so creatively liberating and what I needed to hear. Thanks for the marvelous work everyone at Archipel. Absolutely gonna check out both of their works.

I bought Sazan and Comet Girl last year and enjoyed how it made me feel like I was watching a movie. It's so great to learn more about the artist and her process!
Also, I really wish they printed Sazan and Comet Girl on larger paper. Those pages Yuriko Akase showed in this video are incredibly beautiful and the small format doesn't do them justice. Perhaps they will do so in the future. Awesome video!

Thanks for Documentaries, I was lived in Sendai and Tokushima for 7 years from age 1-7. I watched Ghibli and go to Disney Land since my child hood and now I moved to Indonesia. I never do drawing or animation before, until I decide to leave my corporation work and do what I never do before as my child hood dreams. It's not easy but not late to do. I enjoyed all progress I do from 2021 until now. All this channel documentaries video give me more Inspire to do drawing and animation better than yesterday. I'm not alone, masterpice created by lot of fails and tears until that skills and works become Master.

I believe that he doesn't make manga anymore, but I desperately wish there was a video like this on Hitoshi Ashinano. His method of storytelling is blissful and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou chnaged my life. Sadly, like most manga artist, there is precious little to be found on him. Even less for someone who can only read English.

So good I am speechless! You really blew it out of the park with this documentary. I love Torch, the artists are free to pursue manga in their own way instead of conforming to the norm. And it makes me think, why conform to the norm? Imagine if more manga had vastly different art styles. And the works of both authors depicted in this documentary look amazing. I want to read them both!!!

This is a great documentary. I am familiar with Saito’s artstyle, it is quite a common style used by Japanese hobbyists that are also into western media (particularly dating from the late 80s to 2000s). I understand that such a style isn’t pleasing to a large audience but its rather unique and pleasing to me. The violence may turn others off, but depicted in that style is well fitted for the stories he creates. The expressions and details especially with the nose and facial details found in western people that make the artwork more harsh and realistic(in a cartoony way) is what makes it work with the storytelling. I’m glad to see Saito having the opportunity to showcase the artstyle by publication.

That guy in the 30:00 mark that does the ''manga gone rogue'' vibe reminds me of art student I once met (at an art course). His technical skill was a disasters, but his fantasy was enormous. Once we had to draw realistic portraits, in this case I tried to use my best skills. Even though mine looked more advanced than his, his work was more recognizable. Sometimes technique isn't all that. Btw I watched many of these documentaries and the style/vibe is always spot on, as if we're really zoomed into the artists lives.

My son of 18 loves Saito so he collected every book produced by him. There are 5, Shito Chofu, Shito Chofu South American Journey, Shito Chofu Mystery America, Musashino and Musashino, Lost Highway, which has just been released recently. Saito is highly intelligent person and he claims that he makes his utmost efforts to draw his works minutely and carefully and that he does not belong to Garo school. Here he elaborates on the latter. I am influenced by my son and now like his works, too. I love how he tries to create without using too many words - narrations, just as he explains here, although he suspended that policy and began to use lots of words since Musashino (I still love his works after Musashino). I think me and my son are lucky to be able to read his works earlier than other country’s people in Japanese, our native tongue. Saito spent his early years in US so that might have influenced him when he created Shito Chofu series.

  • @emiliojurado5069

I really must emphasize the insight about creativity and crafting that "Junichiro Saito" says around minute: 30:16. "I can,t draw exactly as I want. If I can,t recreate an image I have in mind, I end up going with it anyway... as it becomes part of my work." I think this is a fundamental mindset because many creators get caught in the trap of trying to be or do something "perfect". Or create an ideal work. Art is a wondering and reflection of existence. And likewise, art it,s imperfect, unpredictable, confused, inspiring, depressing, ugly, beautiful...
