I'm glad that in this age and time, we finally have someone telling us that all we needed for great jobs are the old soldiers not necessarily the most recent bank breaker armies... Thanks so much sir
No problem, i only started looking at these newer cameras mirrorless etc about a year ago, it was then i was like oh everyone considers my camera gear to be old, who knew!
Hey Martin, great video! I bought a 6D last year based on your comparisons. I also picked up a like new 5D mark iii from a local commercial photographer for $500 US...just could not pass up that deal. Have not used it too much, but love the 6D for its dynamic range! keep up the real world reviews of older canon DSLRs, thank you.
Hi Martin - This isn't a portraiture comment, but all your vids on the 6D (and 5D classic) have been simply excellent and thought I'd add my 2cents. I bought my 6D Mk1 brand new back in 2013 and it still functions as my primary documentation camera for heritage conservation architecture work. I have a 5D Mk IV too, which I bought to replace the 6D but I've never really switched, and it's the 5D Mk IV which perennially sits in my bag. The 6D is a tank and highly reliable. It has done its work in remote locations and I never fear for the battery life. I've never exhausted the battery, even down to -30C all day outside which always kills my iPhone. The dynamic range and colours on the 6D are excellent - and ample focus points for what I do. I pair my 6D with the Canon tilt-shift lenses and the good old EF 17-40. I have never once found myself wishing for anything after a day of shooting with the 6D. It is just good at what it does. Period. Can't ask for more (except maybe a 5DsR coz I really just want one for personal landscape/arch projects). For the odd bit of studio work I do shoot (furniture), the 6D hits on all the portraiture points you mention. Cheers.
@jr3002 (This is all personal novice work) I bought my 6D as my first full frame DSLR, and I also wanted a 5DsR because of the specs. Once I bought it I did use it a lot, but after the novelty wore down I nearly never pull it out of my bag even though it is always in there. The only times I have used it is when I want ultra high res to crop right in, so compound eyes or if I take a photo of jewellery or something detailed. The reasons I don't use it: - heavier - bigger - slower - the files are just so bloody big - for some reason the 6D photos just look better, unless I want a really clinical representation I can't explain it - when I take photos side by side they are the same, but when I'm using it for real, I am nearly always happier with the photos from the 6D. The only final note about the 5DsR - Dust omg the dust. I swear the little pixels pick up every little single spec of it. Over f/7 - DUST SPOTS. I have never had any aliasing problems, even on fine parallel hairs of insects or compound eyes. It's so amazing and I would never tell anyone not to buy it, but it's really just a 5D III with massive sensor and USB 3. But for some reason I can't bring myself to sell it even thought it just sits in my bag.
@@DaveMuller Dave - Great commentary re: the 5DsR. Thank you. That's the small but real life stuff that no one ever talks about. Dust! I can imagine it is just something one has to put up with. The sheer size of the files is the main thing holding me back really. Having shot a decade of RAW (and converted JPEG sets through DxO) with the 6D, i'm still at just a single TB on a 3TB storage on my Mac. The 5DsR would gobble that up right quick. The 6D feels like a more nimble camera than those of the 5D series for sure.
I was just going over your old 6D videos because i found a great deal on a used 6D (I'm picking it up tomorrow) and suddenfly this video pops up lol. Your videos are great and thanks to you I stopped lusting over the latest and greatest and am focusing on getting the best I can out of the classic cameras. Cheers!
Same here! I just picked up a 6D and find I love it and can do everything I want to, as long as I know how the camera works and how to set it up for my vision.
I've had my 6D for a few years now. Great camera and a low-light beast. I have other cameras, but the 6D is still my grab-and-go camera. Learn it, enjoy it. It's still a solid choice.
Great video Martin. Love the comparison you made with the Ferrari at 5 mph. A lot of people often just assume the only time to take photos is 12 noon with no clouds in the sky, but in reality, you often have to change your lighting to achieve a great looking image that can tell a better story
I've bought the 6D as an upgrade to my 5DII back in 2012. It seems better than 5DII in every way except a few things that are not very important to me (like 1/180 flash sync, 1/4000 max.shutter, SD card slot) and I really enjoyed shooting with it for 10 years. It's a great camera. And it has the face-detect AF for portraits (quite slow but accurate).
I find that 5d2 does “punch”, but more into brownish, military green sort of colour render. Contrast is a bit too much for me (i like to doodle in Lightroom and Photoshop). 6d gives a soft fresh blush to girls cheeks, lovely glow to flowers and skin, glass objects are deep, water/sky are crisp… even with adjusted warmth settings, these renderings are simply artistic, almost aristocratic with 6d. This is the difference for me between 5d and 6d. Love 5d (and 5d2) - but I am in love with 6d
@@MartinCastein Martin, let me know if you’d like to try out a Pentacon multi-coating f1.8 50mm with your 6D. I am in London now, and happy to lend for an indefinite period. This is such an interesting pairing!! :) the pinks/ cold blues/ purple greys are so unique in this combo!
I have both, and interestingly I used them opposite to what you have said. 5Dmk2 is my studio camera that I used for portraits. Images are just punchy and beautiful, and need little editing to be perfect. The 6D "classic" is physically lighter, better at focusing, and the shutter is so smooth compared to the clunky 5Dmk2, which makes the 6D great for shooting candid street photography, and events. If I had to choose only one, it would be a really hard decision as I love them both… So I would say, just get both. They are cheap, and both have benefits… ps. I also have a 6Dmk2, mainly for video, but in photo mode, even that has it's own look… 🙏🏿
Get a 6D and a 5D classic - you've got convenience and nice colours, and awkward and really nice colors. 6D is my babe, but I've got a 5D lined up. My old Pentax 10mp CCD has a nice look as well, but I've got no lenses for it, so the 5D is the choice of filmic in the moment photography - because the screen sucks.
What an exceptional video! I am so grateful for the way you tailor your content to aspiring photographers who may not have the budget for top-tier cameras. Your coverage of the 5D Mark II, in particular, is invaluable to beginners and even intermediate photographers who are looking to improve their craft without breaking the bank. Your approachable and relatable content truly sets you apart from other photography channels. Your dedication to serving a wider audience with older professional cameras is truly commendable. On a personal note, I would be thrilled to hear about your experience with the rather affordable Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.4 lens on the 5D Mark II or the 6D. As a fellow enthusiast of the classics, I would love to see a video from you on the best affordable 50mm lenses for cameras like the 5D and 6D which many beginner photographers use. I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us. Keep up the fantastic work!
glad you compared these 2. I got a 5D Classic and it broke second time using it. So I have been debating on which of these to get as my next attempt to try out Canon for the first time.
I have the 5D MK ii and recently bought the 6D for the extra ISO that it offers. I'll be getting more outdoor evening shots without tripod. . I prefer the chunkier 5D MKii to hold but I have big hands. . I don't know; I like both. I'm no pro. . Thanks Martin.
The review I was looking for. Thanks, Martin. All the reviews are about tech features vs how the files look. I’m a primary film shooter; the 5D M2 is the closest thing I’ve used digitally that had that film look and feel. I sold it to invest in the FujiX system, which was a huge mistake, as that system produces the most surgical raw files. Just awful. I want to go back to Canon.
Hey Martin. Great videos. I bought the 5D Mark ii because of your videos and the color pallet. As I listen to this video I am beginning to think that you are the one person that could help all of us old timers. When explaining the color pallet difference if you could find a way to reference the color pallet to a color film. IE, Fuji Velva, Kodak Portrait, Kodachrome, Extachrome and so on? Us old timers would pick our results based on the film type and it seems to me that sensors are about the same. What to you think?
I have owned both and I believe your description of the renderings is spot on. Hands down, I do miss the 5D Mk2 not the 6D, contrary to the popular assesment. Not just color wise but also focus wise...The 6D represents a thremendous value for the money though.
Nice video. My daily is a 5D2; it's been my workhorse for years (I tried mirrorless and am still into the optical viewfinder). I'm also old school and only use centre focus point and recompose; 5D2 has been my workhorse for weddings. I keep seeing videos about the 5D1 and was thinking of getting one just to see what the picture rendering is like, but then I found your videos about the 6D. I never considered the 6D at all. So I'm torn between 5D1 and 6D, but I might get a 6D. To be honest, I was thinking of going to the 5D4 before Canon stopped it, so at least I could get a brand new camera. But what a nice set of videos you have on the various models! Thank you.
Thank you for the wonderful channel, Martin! I'm learning a lot from you. I shoot portraits in studio with studio flashes and Nikon d700 which I really like. I use tethering with Capture One and it works great. But now I'm curious to try some of these Canon classic cameras because of your channel. Do you have experience with tethering in studio with them and what's your opinion?
Can you do a shoot with both camera's in their respective's strong points to show and verify what you have explain. EXAMPLE- shoot both in the studio and bought outsided in the conditions you like on an even platform and lighting. I think that would help tremendously. I sold upper tier Fujilfilm gear to come back to Canon because Fuji could not handle my sports load. But I purchased older sports bodies because they are more than capable and I was able to save a lot of money
Many thanks for this. I've had Canon cameras since the early 1980's and amassed a few EF lenses. I was interested to hear if getting a cheap 5D Mk ii for fun would be fun for me but I already have a 6D Mk ii. Think you've answered my question.
@@YODUDE111000 the 5d mk2 was much easier to learn. Yes the auto modes helped a little. I don’t do as much editing any more. Straight out the camera the pics are perfect. Unless I made an error with the exposure. The menu system has a sort of apple simplicity. Canon stuff are so much affordable. And it does video. Canon colour science works for me. It gives me the same excitement I use to get with my old Minolta. This I can’t fathom as I do believe Nikon lens have more contrast. Which I think I see when I use my Nikon lens on the canon
Thanks for the video, fired. Would you have any advice on an older DSLR for the following parameters: Street photography, landscape, pictures of my kids, and a little bit of video to practice with. Cameras I've been looking at so far 5D, 5Dii, D700, D200, 6D.
Great Video Sir I am interested in photography,, so which is better for photographic images, the Canon 6D Mark 1 or 5D Mark 2, because I want to buy and I would like your advice carefully.
How are you, Martin? hope you are well! Please I have one question to ask, I bought An used EOS 6D, and I was going to set the aperture range to F29, Suddenly I noticed its maximum range is just 22!! Cuz I am a dentist and it's necessary to have a sharp depth of images, And I saw a webinar about dental photography by a Doctor who was using a 6D camera, and in some pics, he showed info on his settings and the aperture was 29, so I need to know if there is a way to reach that aperture F29 or F28 for the canon 6d because now I am so confused. Best regards. Thank you.
@@MartinCastein Thank you very much, Maybe that explains about my concern cuz I am using Sigma 105 mm macro lens and I saw in detailes about it, the minimum aperture is F/22. Thank you for make it clear🙏.
I have both the 5D2, and the 6D, and a 70D and the originoal EOS-M. I have a thing for cameras that is the "first" of something. I LOVE the 6D...I love the 70D for the dual-focusing-thing. But I always grab the 5D if I need a camera I can trust. :)
Be good if you could do more about lighting.. loved the comparison.. I’ve got a 6D which needs a bit of attention.. think I’ve managed to get out of second with it!! At least I don’t stall anymore.. !
Just get both! I have the 6D and 5D Classic. Have had the 5DII in the past and shot tons of portraits with it for print work back in the day. I should pick one up again. Im starting to like the RF cameras less and less. The 5D Classic, 5DII and the 6D were Canon's pinnacle for their colors IMO. All downhill after that.
Ok… I got, through my 2nd hustle, a modern canon camera handed to me to start producing content for which I had previously been using my phone. Within about a month of that, I got another canon handed to me, but this one was an older canon Rebel. Going back and forth between the two has been good for filling in the gaps while learning Photography and the Canon ecosystem. I’m looking at these two cameras to continue my education in that regard. And for the simple fact that the 6D uses SD cards, so it better fits my workflow, I’m leaning that way. I got a long way to go, and I’m not sure it’s possible to learn it all, but I’m really looking forward to it. What’s your thoughts on what fits best between Canon R6m2 and T6? Or do I have it wrong altogether?
'have the Canon Mark 3 and Canon 6D--I would like to hear your thoughts on 6D 2 versus 6D with the articulating screen. What to you, are the differences--per capability? Is 6D2 same with upgrade of screen? or something else?
Hi, yeah i would still prefer the d600 overall, the focus system is better as an overall although the centre point is better on the 6d but the rest are better on the d600, the d600 has a lot more dynamic range and has 2 card slots, but most importantly for me the body just lends itself better to faster work with more customisation options and better implementation of auto iso and aperture priority etc. things like spot metering linked to focus point and the flash system is overall better too. Its a lot of the small things that make the d600 better for events.
@@MartinCastein Nikon usually has those things more on point, short of the Canon 1D series. Do you think the D700 would lag behind the 6D or keep up? My only Nikon is a 1D I got for free, but because of its NTSC colour space, it certainly has.. unique colours. I have the 6D which is my babe and an old 10.2mp CCD Pentax. My roommate's still running the 12mp DX Nikon D2Xs and could probably jump to a newer full frame one day.
Not sure I comment on the right video. But, you said in a video you could comment on the focus system of 5dmk2 and some lenses. Did you try 35mm 1.4L mk1? And is it ok or not with 5dmk2? Same for 50mm 1.8 mk2, and 16-35f4. Thanks
the 5d ii isnt easy with wide primes, the hit rate will be not great but its fine if you dont mind that, it depends a lot on the lighting too, in low light it gets really bad in reasonable light its ok. 16-35 is easy for it as most things are in focus on it anyway.
Noob here, been looking at old Canon DSLRs and found a 5d mk ii on KEH for about 450 in LN - condition. Got it today and it looks like its never been used. Question, can the shutter count be reset because this thing says 4111 shutter count. Would this be legit hardly used camera or can it be reset at some point in time? Thanks for any input!
Please recommend a flashgun for 5D classic as it struggles indoors even when the subject is moved to a window etc. please note that the Speedlite should be budget friendly like the camera itself. Thanks
Great advice! Your Ferrari analogy was spot on! I'm patiently waiting for a low shutter count 5d2 to pop up for sale. In your opinion, what is the typical lifespan of a 5d2 shutter? Thanks!
@@MartinCastein thank you for the reply! For how inexpensive 5d2s are selling, having Canon replace it would give the camera a new lifetime of photos, for minimal investment.
Thank you Martin 👍 P.S Oh yes very clear insights…. + love your photos… As a hobbyist on a tight budget with a 20D in the bag (+NK D200) I guess there’s no need to rush to get 5D, especially as I haven’t explored them in challenging conditions?
I have often thought about this and have come to a conclusion that the biggest reason why older cameras OOC jpeg and Raw files seem to look punchier with deeper blacks (especially in subjects like trees and brick walls for example and even tones in peoples faces) and more stand out tones etc , is because of the lower dynamic range of older cameras . As an example , the tones and stronger contrast and punchyness of Nikon D700, D3 or D300S look nicer more rich and higher contrast compared to D600, D750 or D810 (which look flatter) straight from camera . Another example is canon RP vs EOS R , where the RP looks more punchier with more contrast compared to a flatter image from the EOS R . Would you agree with this or can you add anything else/different etc. would love to know your expertise on this ? Thanks and lovely your channel 👌
Thanks David yeah its the dynamic range but also i feel like because of having less dynamic range they were trying to work out how to make the raw files as good as possible. I do feel that over time a lot of the manufacturers have sort of stopped caring as much and just left people to get one with it. Its because they were trying to compete on the look of the files. Then they realised most people that buy cameras dont actually use them (hence the mad low shutter counts on most used cameras) and that the game you could sell cameras on was anything you could measure in a lab. So dynamic range and iso and megapixels because the battle to sell cameras. Image rendition was just at the back of the que. Thats been how ive seen it go because its what they talk about. the camera companies dont talk about tonal gradation or image rendition.
RP sensor is duller and doesnt produce the same colours so takes more work potentially in post but RP has much better high iso, depends what you are doing, if you are using old EF lenses wide open there is a good case for the RP because the focus on it is really good.
I think if you take the trouble to explore flickr you will find plenty of excellent work from knowledgeable photographers who know what they are doing. Certainly more than on TH-cam where 99% of the photography is rubbish.
Hi Martin. If I may; I don’t know what camera I need to get consistant usable 10-15 mb files with. I have a 10 and 12mp cameras but by the time I do minor processing the file drops to 5-7 mbs. Could you make a video about this? Thanks so much

I got the 5d mk ll, despite being a Nikon guy, I prefer it over my d700 now. I feel like I finally have a "go to" camera!
Both great cameras, the important thing is you found the right camera for you!
For sure. Your video’s were very helpful in my decision. Thank you 🙏
In which area you prefer over d700? Thanks
Great Video Sir
I am interested in photography,, so which is better for photographic images, the Canon 6D Mark 1 or 5D Mark 2, because I want to buy and I would like your advice carefully.
Thank you.
That will depend on the lens not the camera, maybe you can ask about the lens used. I expect it was the 100mm macro. That goes to f32
How about for landscape or travel? I’m considering picking up a lower MP canon for my gritty camping trips that can take a bit of abuse and keep going
50d Eric suggests is a good suggestion, id go with the 6d out of these two cameras i think, but either will be up to that.
just bought a 6d and took one portrait shot came out beautiful
Hi Martin
Thinking to get it as backup for for a R6 and the intent for studio work.
I shoot headshots / portraits ,events ,wedding.
Thanks in advance
Be good if you could do more about lighting.. loved the comparison.. I’ve got a 6D which needs a bit of attention.. think I’ve managed to get out of second with it!! At least I don’t stall anymore.. !
i will do John! Im sure you havent stalled your 6d before hahaha
As an outdoor camera the 5D mkll also is weather sealed, which is marginal due to the age, but still more reassuring under a light drizzle
For sure
What about a 1 D mark IV?
Just get both! I have the 6D and 5D Classic. Have had the 5DII in the past and shot tons of portraits with it for print work back in the day. I should pick one up again. Im starting to like the RF cameras less and less. The 5D Classic, 5DII and the 6D were Canon's pinnacle for their colors IMO. All downhill after that.
Agreed !
More please😁
hahahahah i love this comment thank you!
The 6d for sure fills the gap better for you in this setup
Thanks!!
The DR of the 6D is ridiculously good. I have all three 5d, 5dii and 6d. The 6d is very forgiving because of its huge DR
'have the Canon Mark 3 and Canon 6D--I would like to hear your thoughts on 6D 2 versus 6D with the articulating screen. What to you, are the differences--per capability? Is 6D2 same with upgrade of screen? or something else?
I haven’t used the 6d ii I’m afraid
Q: is there a camera that will give u nice skin tones for portraits but also can catch sports action ?
Hi Martin. Thanks for this great video as usual! Would you still prefer Nikon d600 to canon 6D for events?
Hi, yeah i would still prefer the d600 overall, the focus system is better as an overall although the centre point is better on the 6d but the rest are better on the d600, the d600 has a lot more dynamic range and has 2 card slots, but most importantly for me the body just lends itself better to faster work with more customisation options and better implementation of auto iso and aperture priority etc. things like spot metering linked to focus point and the flash system is overall better too. Its a lot of the small things that make the d600 better for events.
@@MartinCastein thanks for the explanation. I perfectly understand now👍🙏🏻
@@MartinCastein
Nikon usually has those things more on point, short of the Canon 1D series.
Just purchased a new Canon 6D MII because I know SLR's are becoming harder to get. . I know it's older tech but I like SLR's.
@@MartinCastein Thanks then it isn't only me. I find the 35 1.4 hard to use at around f1.4/low light
I'm torn right now, should i go with canon 7d ii with 5d ii or nikon d600 with a d300. I'm looking for that perfect pair that works together
what do you photograph?
Awesome video again .
thanks!
Thanks for any input!
its probably the correct count if it looks new. a lot of cameras get bought then not used.
Please recommend a flashgun for 5D classic as it struggles indoors even when the subject is moved to a window etc. please note that the Speedlite should be budget friendly like the camera itself. Thanks
580exii or 430exii
@@MartinCastein Thank you
@@MartinCastein some cheap Chinese flashes too please. And is going with a manual flash okay??
Great advice! Your Ferrari analogy was spot on! I'm patiently waiting for a low shutter count 5d2 to pop up for sale. In your opinion, what is the typical lifespan of a 5d2 shutter? Thanks!
from what ive seen from friends and my own experience its 150k-250k but some just randomly go early unfortunately.
@@MartinCastein thank you for the reply! For how inexpensive 5d2s are selling, having Canon replace it would give the camera a new lifetime of photos, for minimal investment.
5d nice colours 6d more fast
Love your videos
thanks David!
Thank you Martin 👍 P.S Oh yes very clear insights…. + love your photos… As a hobbyist on a tight budget with a 20D in the bag (+NK D200) I guess there’s no need to rush to get 5D, especially as I haven’t explored them in challenging conditions?
stick with what you have the 20d is very capable indeed
@@MartinCastein Thanks 👍
@@MartinCastein An excellent explanation and makes perfect sense. Thanks 🙏
If the question is... between 5d2 and 6d, which camera yield photos those are closer to nikon D700 photos???
Everyone's opinion is welcome here 😃☕☕
Get a d700 👍
@@MartinCastein already got a D700😅 and i also have some canon ef prime lenses around.
To me, the closest D700 look I got was with the 5d classic.
Martin and if u compair with the rp sensor ?
RP sensor is duller and doesnt produce the same colours so takes more work potentially in post but RP has much better high iso, depends what you are doing, if you are using old EF lenses wide open there is a good case for the RP because the focus on it is really good.
I missed a 5D II at a local store, went to buy a 1DXI and ended up with a 6D because of its size.
I dont think you will be dissapointed at all
i'm getting 5 d mark 2 it will be my first full frame camera .
5D I still King
Always
given that 5dii is quite inexpensive, I would get both :-)
This is the right answer.
I think if you take the trouble to explore flickr you will find plenty of excellent work from knowledgeable photographers who know what they are doing. Certainly more than on TH-cam where 99% of the photography is rubbish.
The 5D 2 is a lot cheap to buy, therefore it wins hands dowwn
Hi Martin. If I may; I don’t know what camera I need to get consistant usable 10-15 mb files with. I have a 10 and 12mp cameras but by the time I do minor processing the file drops to 5-7 mbs. Could you make a video about this? Thanks so much
i first need to know why you are ending up with 5-7 megapixels. are you cropping or just ending up with that at export?
@@MartinCastein Thank you Martin, I did get this figured out. Really appreciate your videos and information!
Can we get a video of you hooning a Ferrari while taking photos on a 6D?
hahahaha yes that would be pretty good wouldnt it!
My 5d 2 iso is trash hate it. Make for portraits in shady areas
Lets agree to disagree, if shooting in studio you have lights...
