Sadly, Viserys II was only King for a year. But he did spend most of his life ruling the Seven Kingdoms as Hand of the King, while Aegon III brooded, Daeron fought to finish the Conquest, and Baelor prayed (and was the first to suffer the Targaryen madness, but in his case, it manifested as fanaticism).
I love how he says it's a name fit for a king, but little Viserys is literally the absolute last in line to ever be king. But he ends up being one and actually continues the bloodline
He ain't last in line :) As the youngest child of Rhaenyra, he is still ahead of Aegon the Jester and Aemond the Toaster :)

I don’t think people appreciate Daemon’s acting as much on this episode. But everytime you see him with Viserys, you can tell it hurts for him to see his brother this way. Can definitely relate, and it sold the emotional pain for me in their interactions. Few words, all expression.

@@Bionickpunk isn't Prince Consort? in general , monarchies lacks a "King Consort" as a title , because Queen Rulers normally happens when a kingdom lacks a direct male heir. So , to avoid things to undermine their authority , it makes front and center that a queen is rulling them.
Even with half his face rotting away, he just exudes happiness when he sees his grandsons. Truly, this is the best character ASOIF has had put to film. He's such a good man.

Rhaenyra is unbelievably ethereal in this scene, like a Saint in a painting.
I think this is such clever filming. The older he has gotten, the more nostalgic (as we all do) and willing to be open with his feelings. He sees Rhaenyra in this way, bathed in golden light. She’s always been the joy of his life. And probably the source of the greatest pain because of it.

PARTS IN THIS SCENE I ULTIMATELY LOVE:
1. Viserys: "Daemon"
Daemon: "Brother"
In the 7. episode, when they spoke to each other, they finished their conversation similarly. How they call each other, the way they call each other is showing they still have their sibling bond.
2. The introducing of their children in "chronologically"
They start with the older and after the younger. The future kings met with the present king.
3. When Rhaenyra introducing the younger Viserys, Daemon caress his hair.
4. "That is a name fit for a king"

@@jacobbenear2206 he's not super old. He's basically rotting away alive, that's why he looks like this. In the books, Viserys dies at 52. Daemon is supposed to be 47 at his brother's death. While Matt Smith is 39, I have no problem believing he will look exactly the same for the next 8 years.

Yes, aegon the unworthy followed by Daeron and so on. That lineage extends all the way to the dany and Jon (and interestingly enough, the baratheons too)

That baby right there is Viserys II, who would go on to serve as hand of the king to his brother and both of his nephews ... and for a short while, after succession issues yet again, he would serve as King of Westeros. He was right in this scene after all, "Viserys" is a name befitting of a King! Well, maybe except Dany's older brother.

My man Viserys actually ran the realm. See his nephew conquered Dorn while he was left to run the kingdom. Then his other nephew didnt sire any children. I think his most fatal flaw is marrying his son Aegon to his sister Naerys. Then again gotta keep the Targaryen blood pure.
Also lets not forget that he was the least traumatized Targaryen at the end of the Dance. He knew his mom died but he never experienced firsthand seeing her death, nor was his young adult life full of assasination attempts, instead he was a wealthy hostage of overseas.
Dany’s older brother went through so much trauma that I feel like he might’ve been a decent ruler if he hadn’t been “the Beggar King”.
@@Prodigi50 Even if he’s not King, he would still be a better person. Dany mentioned in the books on several occasions that the pressure he went under just to provide for himself and her and having to sell their mother’s crown burned away all the joy and warmth in him, leaving behind a cruel and bitter man. The fact that Dany, at the start of the series (both in Book and TV) was sheltered, not malnourished, can speak Valyrian (later revealed), and even had her virginity intact meant her brother must have had done something right.

Things would have been sooo different for Westeros had Viserys II lived longer, and had Aemon the Dragonknight become King Aemon I instead. Naerys would have had a happier life too, as she and Aemon adored each other. And even should the love between them cool? He probably would have allowed Naerys to retire and be a Septa like she always wanted.
Aegon IV was just the, ughh, worst.

At the end of the day, Viserys just wanted his family to be happy and healthy. He loved his children and grandchildren, and the love he has for Rhae and her kids are unmatched. Aegon and Aemond seem like they couldn’t care less when he dies, only that Aegon becomes ruler. But Rhae will genuinely be devastated when Viserys dies.
Viserys’s life would have been happier if only he had been poorer. If only he hadn’t been the king…
That’s because viserys never treated his kids with Alicent like his kids. Never trained them spent time it anything he even says rhaenrya is his only child
To be fair, hard to care about a dad that let's the blinding of one of his sons unpunished, prioritises his grandchildren over actual children, and neglects the crud out of their mother (calling her someone else even)

To be fair, Viserys’ body was deteriorating at a rapid pace when he had his children with Alicent. He physically couldn’t be the father he was with Rhaenyra, and she is his heir. It makes sense for him to be with her the most, yet I wish we saw some one on ones with him and each of his children, especially Haelena since she’s a dreamer.
It’s obvious he loves them all, but each love is different and unique. He wasn’t allowed to nuture his love with them the same way.

One of the most human scenes in HOTD. A daughter introducing her son to his grandfather. So heart wrenching. The actors played this scene so well and their chemistry with each other is divine

That's one of my favorite lines in all of F & B.
Rhaenyra's and Daemon's children Aegon III and Viserys II Targaryen were lucky that they survived the Dance of the Dragons and become the future kings of Westeros. After the Dance of the Dragons ended they did their best to rule the Seven Kingdoms even without dragons.
“Lucky” is a loaded word, those boys are about to experience tremendous heartbreak and violence to themselves and their families

Not so. Aegon III was dubbed as the Unlucky One after the dance. Aegon II had no choice but to spare his nephew or risk the extinction of House Targaryen. Both his sons, Jaehaerys and Maelor were murdered while his brothers, Aemond and Daeron were killed during the civil war which left him no choice but to wed Aegon "The Younger" to his last remaining daughter, Jaehaera (much to the Greens dismay). Aegon III was said to fear and hated dragons after witnessing Sunfyre devouring his mother, Rhaenyra. He also became very anti-social after his only friend Gaemon attempted to murder him. His only source of happiness came when his brother Viserys returned.
@@gis4210 not to mention Aegon III spent many guilty years because he left in brother Viserys behind in wars of gullet. Only when Viserys came back did Aegon III finally smiled for once.

And it wasn’t Aegon II that spare Aegon III it was the green that poison Aegon II to save their necks because Cregan and Jeyne Arryn were wiping what remain of the green fleet in the Crownlands and Cregan stark was coming for the responsibles of jace and Rhaenrya’s deaths.
Aegon III did rule. After Jahaera died he marry Daenaera whom help to improved his mood a lot. He would attend council yet again he was a small child of 13 when he became king. Then his brother came back on his anniversary with his second wife Daenaera and more life was breath into him. He named his brother hand and Viserys II ruled more than Aegon III did. However, his realm was good considered he basically had a broken kingdom when he got his crown. Than his son Daeron I took over yet Viserys II had to ruled as Daeron conquer Dorne. Then daeron died and Baelor I came in and Viserys had to yet again ruled as Baelor prey and starved himself until he died. Then Viserys II got the crown but died a year later.
But In truth Viserys II ruled for 3 kings.
His son freaking sucks but we got great warriors from his line. Daeron II, Daemon Blackfyre, bittersteal, blood raven, aemon the white knight, shiera seastar.
Actually Viserys II was the one who continued the blood line of Viserys, being the closest to Daenerys and Jon in the times of the dance...
Correct but Aegons III line continued until the Blackfyres went supposedly extinct.
Viserys II son (Aegon IV) and Aegon III daughter (Daena) had a child (Daemon Blackfyre) who created the rival Targaryen house.

@@NobleBoss there's a little headcanon I had then a part of the support to Daemon Blackfyre was due to him being the closest relative of Daeron the young dragon.
Although Aegon III still have descendants, the main Plumm line (also the mercenary Plumm) and the Penrose children of his daughter Rhaena, but yeah, the main descendants of Aegon III with real importance, even if they were of bastard Origins, are the Blackfyre.

@@iloveads123 Aegon III had no sons. Viserys II continued the line entirely since Aegon III had no children and Alicent’s children were all dead and descendants were all dead.
Hence Viserys II’s line continued through Aegon IV and down to his son, Daeron II and all the way to Rhaegar, Daenerys, and Jon.
This is the happiest we will ever see Rhaenyra and Emma nailed it. This is what she wanted above all. To be with Daemon and to give Viscerys grandchildren he could truly adore. Matt nailed it too with the heartbreaking look on his face knowing him and his brother will never get to have the relationship that both are finally ready to have but it’s too late. Paddy’s brilliance here goes without even having to say.

I hope this show would end as Visery II as a King just like it started Viserys I ascended as King
i am glad he saw their children and was happy to see them before he died .. it must have meant alot for rhaenyra to get that blessing from her father

@@alext7500 I actually think he was regretting it and apologising and that’s why he cried “I’m sorry” repeatedly. Because I think he realised that his daughter and brother were happy together and had he not been so overly protective of Rhaenyra, he and his brother (and Rhaenyra) could’ve had a good relationship during those ten years spent apart. But that’s just my take on it.
@@alext7500 tbf daemon in the early season was imo not as mature as he is now. Back then he viewed rhanerya as a chess piece, a step close to the throne. Viserys sniffed that out and didn’t want his daughter being used as a political ploy.
This moment is gold no matter how sad it was. Proud Rhaenyra introduced her full-blood Targaryen sons to her father who immediately gave the aura of proud-father to her.

Rhaenyra just screams royalty... she's so ethereal and genuine... like she's just everything, it's sad how much she's slandered by the public because she goes against the norm in that time period
She abandoned her father to the hightowers, committed adultery, lied to her best friend and is lying to everyone about the legitimacy of her children. The only person who cared for viserys in this episode was Daemon.

Viserys looked so happy when he found out his daughter named her son after him. Whether or not we can decide he was a good king, he was certainly a good person.

Also Matt caressing they boy’s head probably to calm him down as it was revealed they cut a few of earlier entrance scene due the boy’s crying uncontrollably not in the mood at all for filming.
Yeah, the kids' scenes were in danger of being cut because they weren't in a good mood, likely because they were scared. Probably why Aegon was far away. It's great they were able to make the scene work, because we at least needed Viserys to see his grandchildren before it all goes to sh*t.
@@anthyavila9726 I wonder if it would have worked better if they used dolls and a bit of CGI for realism if the kids were that scared and upset. maybe headshots from behind or more of a focus on Daemon's expression
I do wonder why they changed the timeline in the show. in the books Aegon would have been roughly 8 when king Viserys died. young viserys was not much younger than Aegon
older kids would be less likely to fear the gruesom appearance than a toddler.

I do wonder how the Dance will play out for these babies since they're just literal babies and won't be able to do the things that child Aegon III and Viserys II are supposed to do.

Viserys always wanted to be remembered in history and Rhaenyra granted that wish. This is a touching moment for the old dying king because it meant a lot for him.
I think it really says something about Daemon and Rhaenyra's character and parenting skills that both Aegon III and Viserys II became two of the absolute best Targaryen rulers despite the cards they were dealt while all of Alicent's children (except maybe the daughter) turned out to be assholes or idiots. Rhaenyra, the only child Viserys had a direct hand in raising, would also have been a great queen if she was able to ascend the throne uneventfully instead of being traumatised by the civil war. Really makes you think about how terrible a parenting figure Alicent has been to her children.
Exactly if otto and Alicent hadn’t plunged into the war I reckon she would’ve been a great queen and if the lannisters hadn’t stolen all the gold and money. She would’ve had power at her side of anyone dared question her ruling. She never got a chance to truly rule and aegon the second made her out to be a big villian and wiped her history from the books.

Aegon III and Viserys II, two future kings of Westeros
Viserys II was very similar to his grandpa in the end. The love for his family, his brother and nephews, was always more powerful than anything, he was one of the best HOTK and King.
And dying in strange circumstances too and also his inability to rule his family, which led to the chaos that was Aegon IV, who is basically all of the worst traits of grandpa Daemon and grandma Rhaenyra rolled into one: pride, lust, arrogance, entitlement....

Otto and his Greens keep putting doubts into his head, like Rhaenyra and Daemon getting together was somehow strategic to unseat him. Couldn't have helped with everyone thinking they murdered Laenor to get married so that they could wed. But Viserys knowing that his daughter and brother named their child after him, shows just how much they love him. I think this scene is telling because Viserys doesn't automatically react happily learning his other grandson is named Aegon, further enforcing the Greens doubts and fears into Viserys. By naming any child Aegon, is like showing ambition of the parents to see their son be a great ruler but Viserys , when he heard about his youngest grandson being named after him, washed away all those doubts and unmerited fears.
I find it interesting that the winner of the dance of dragons was Daemon Targaryen. All his children survived and held positions of extreme importance and power, the only one who got dogged might’ve been Aegon iii poor kid witnessed too much.
Visenya died. Does she not count? Plus, Viserys and Aegon are just as much Rhaenyra’s children as they are Daemon’s children. Also, Daemon never expressed interest in his children. Her only cared about his own power which he didn’t obtain.
It is that very baby Viserys that saved the Targaryen dynasty after the Dance of Dragons, and united the realms for many years as Hand to his older brother King Aegon III
Which sometimes makes me think what if Viserys II was the Prince that was promised cause it’s his bloodline that would face off night king.

This scene was just so sweet. Thats why Viserys is the best king, he loved his family & they made him happy.
He was so touched they named the younger one Viserys.
It was obvious Rhaenyra would want a son named Viserys after her father but what surprised him was Daemon allowed it.
He always thought (because of Otto) that Daemon wanted his throne and didn’t love him. But really Daemon truly loved his big bro and was a huge supporter of him and his claim to the throne.

Man Viserys loved his Daughter more than anything
The whole scene is just so real and perfect from beginning till the end. Rhaenerya wanting so eagerly to introduce her children to her dying father, her naming her son after Viserys, the king's smile when he acknowledges it. Paddy's acting is outstanding here, you can really see how well he mimicked all the gestures of a dying person AND besides this, showing emotion of a proud father who finally found piece. The "Daemon" to his brother, he must have just understood while seeing his daughter so happy, that Daemon is perhaps a good father and husband, and Viserys was in the wrong the whole time when he didn't want this marriage to happen. It's just too real, how the children start to cry by looking at their ill grandfather, so heartbreaking. I've seen it so many times, how the elderly just want to be involved, and the children are afraid of them because of their looks (if they're not used to seeing old people). Loved this episode.

If only Viserys gave Rhaenyra's hand to Daemon when he asked, imagine how much bloodshed could've been avoided, how much happier their family would've been. The Targaryen dynasty wouldn't have started to decline so soon after. Both Aegon III and Viserys II go on to become decent people and kings. For all their faults, both Rhaenyra and Daemon seem to be good parents.
But we can’t cause Daemon and Rhaenyra getting together early on would meant they’ll lose the support of turnstone because of house Royce. Likewise Rhaenyra and her bloodline would’ve had a great reign.

King Viserys, Daemon and Rhaenyra are a unit in itself. He wasn't so concerned about alicient and his children with her.

I honestly think this scene just confirms what Viserys believed about “the prince that was promised”prophecy and making Rhaenyra his heir most likely calmed his nerves once he met his grandsons from Daemon & Rhaenyra.

Viserys was a family man to his core. He knew Daemon would always be a rogue and Rhaenyra’s eldest sons were illegitimate. But he loved his family dearly and nothing made him happier. 😢

Viserys banished Daemon to keep him away from Rhaenyra. Even at Laena's funeral, Daemon still had not forgiven him. Here, Viserys accepts their marriage and their children - he is so deeply touched and is so happy in this scene with his 100% Targ family. It reminds us all, what could have been 16 years ago had Viserys not wanted to please the Lords in his court. He sees how happy they are as well, which makes him happy.

Amazing how destroyed his body is (they did an amazing job), superb acting too. I also love that Daemon calls him "brother", It's like a constant reminder of their connection and that really cares about him.
This 2nd time skip was a wise choice, you really feel the passage of time even if you don't watch the show. Before, time and death felt just like something sad to me cause i was only looking through an individual perspective but seeing in terms of humanity now i feel a certain pleasure in seeing the people around me evolve and change, whether is getting mature or being substituted by someone else.

I can't deal with the scene, to me, Viserys' condition presents all the rot his soul had to endure because of the family rivalry while his body rotted because of the disease. Emma as Rhaenyra is simply ethereal and beautiful and so very elegant, she is so sweet and close to her boys, older and younger, not pushing Jake over Valyrian, holding little Luke and guarding him with her body when Alice went for his eye and now holding Joffrey's hand and Viserys looks so calm in his mom's arms... And Daemon looks so humbled by the suffering of his brother, the only two times he looks passive is here and every time Rhaenyra tested his feelings and boundaries... She called him "my love" and Viserys' dying whisper was "My Love" for poor Aemma and all the guilt he carried and ate at him for what he did.... I can't, I want to stop and get off the train here where 'Nyra is still pregnant with Visenya and Viserys finally found peace
So.. finally Viscerys found the successor he was dreaming for..
