The 132 pounder on my team couldn't shoulder two 15 pound dumbbells but could lat drop our 195 guy. He was all technique and speed.

I was around 70 or 74 kg and would wrestle a guy that was 86 kg. in practice.
He benched 400+ lbs and let's just say mine (bench) was considerably less then that. I remember clearly taking him down as many times as he took me down.
Europeans focus their training on technique and skill development. They use a lot of partner drills for condition as well as some weightlifting.

well in the long run, speed and technique are the two most important things. if you spend all your time on strength, your not going to get anywhere.

Force is equal to mass * acceleration. You can achieve a very large amount of force based on acceleration differences alone, and given that guys typically don’t weigh THAT much more than others, you’ll get alot farther focusing on acceleration

    Dear Kolat,
I really appreciate your work and online website that provides the great quality to whom wants to learn a high level of wrestling. I have recently learnt that some wrestlers especially Russian wrestlers don't life weights at all. I have lifted both heavily and lightly. For example, I'd deadlift heavy about 3 rep, 5 to 6 sets and do body-weight exercise and lift light weights. I'd really would like to know if doing some weightlifting heavy squats and deadlifts and Olympic lifting such as clean and jerk, snatch really helps wrestlers to get better on the mat.
    Thank you very much
From a big fan of yours.

+John2corner Yes Olympic lifts are great for strength in wrestling but you should continually change things up to keep from getting stale. Don't get stuck in the same routine the whole season do a lot of cross training to keep dynamic and don't let the weight lifting cut into your mat time. Calisthenics can be just as effective and a lot more efficient time wise for wrestling during the season.

      +Cary Kolat (KOLAT.COM) Dear Kolat,
Thank you very much for your reply! So do you recommend doing heavy squat and deadlift too? I am trying to learn how to do Olympic lifting these days. I wonder if lifting heavy is also helpful for wrestlers as some people say doing them heavily slows you down. You also mentioned you did light and middle weight lifting. You became one of the best wrestlers in the world, thus maybe I should lift light and middle weight like you did. Thank you again and your website is just awesome!

    • @KOLATCOM
      @KOLATCOM  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+John2corner Yes you can do some heavy lifts but you should also mix in plyometrics or light and middle lifting with the heavy lifts to keep your fast twitch muscles tuned up. Wind sprints and hill sprints are also good for this besides doing explosive moves while drilling on the mat. A good variety will keep you strong and quick just make sure that you don't let it cut into your mat time because that above all is the most important thing in wrestling training.

My first few workouts after school, coach worked us so hard I barely made the men's room (just in time). Came back out and everybody sat along the gym wall as coach was speaking about Thanksgiving dinner that week and not stuffing ourselves. Man I was so green when he said that 😅

So I'm 113lbs and wrestling in highschool varsity team, should I be power lifting two days a week or something? How much should I be doing if I wanted to stay at a light weight?

    • @John-zh6ld

Strength, speed, and endurance. All the Spec Ops guys in training and war were strength, speed, and endurance. Big muscles were the first out in the first week. Wrestlers always did well.

What do you think about weight lifting before practice? Weight lifting comes first and then after weight lifting you go to practice. My legs are tired and makes it hard to drill my moves.

I agree with this advice. I would say that it depends on what level your at. Sometimes I like the kids to spend multiple days a week in the gym.the reason being, most of the athletes we have are new and they can only absorb so much technique training right now. But they have amazing work capacity and ability to recover, so we'll have them weight training multiple days a week. I think as they progress and they can handle more technique training and have established a good base of fitness, we'll taper off on the weights more during season than we do right now.
