    Another thing to do ( I highly recommend) is to cut out that three prong plug and solder and shrink wrap the wires. They tend to get corroded and make poor contact, which makes them get very hot and melt over time. I had two of those plug do that and now I just solder the wires together to eliminate the problem. It will keep your stator from burning out also from running too hot.

    Hi there. Very helpful video. Quick question. When I’m testing the stator and regulator does the ignition key need to be in the on position? Everything else was super clear! Thx.

    Hi, will these tests work on a Yamaha R6 03? My bike’s battery keeps dying even after I put a new battery in. I am trying to figure out if it is a bad stator or Regulator Rectifier.

    I have a 2003 Honda vtx 1800r very low miles and garage kept. Has had 0 issues. One day I went for a ride and after about 15 miles the bike started to sputter and then completely lost power and died as if the key was turned off entirely. No power at all. When hooked to a jump box it turned on and fired up with no issue, the moment the jump box was removed it instantly died. I took the bike home and put it on a charger and it held a charge for weeks and months and fired up again no issue each time I needed to move it. I ran all the tests you outlined in your video and everything seems to check out fine from the battery all the way through. I’m confused as to what the problem could be and am afraid to ride the bike as I don’t want to get stranded again.

      Drain oil to replace what? The stator? You may get a drip or two coming out of the case, but you don't need to drain it.

      Partzilla ok thanks so much I did buy a battery from auto zone it's brand new but this one was made 4 months ago wasn't sitting on shelf in back collecting dust and they have a new supply of motorcycle batteries up front now in box with the date it was made so I beleive since I been dealing with them with cycle battery issues because of them they basicly got cycle batteries now and fresh from factory right by the door letting pple know they sell motorcycle batteries and they are proud of it so I am proud and happy they updated and now have motorcycle batteries thank you for info video was real nice didn't leave anything out

    So for the plug under the seat, the grounds are good, but the reds only have 1.6 volts. What does that mean?

  • @jerrywilt280
    @jerrywilt280 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent video and thanks for the information. I am working on this exact bike which has the problem of not charging the battery. I followed your instructions exactly and found that all of the components appear to check out properly. However, the battery (at rest) shows only 12.3 Volts. When I start the engine, the battery voltage drops to 12.0! Where else can I look to fix this issue?

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The voltage drops when you start it, but what is the voltage at over 3000rpm?

    • @jerrywilt280
      @jerrywilt280 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The battery at rest reads 12.7V. When you insert the key into the ignition, the voltage drops to 12.1 V. When started and revved up, the battery voltage increases to 13.5 V. When the engine is stopped and the key removed, the battery voltage returns to 12.7 V.
      I checked the double reds and the double greens from the regulator/rectifier. The reds read 12.7 V; the greens read 0.2 ohms (as shown in your video).
      My customer said he rode the bike to a place and when he tried to start the bike, it would not turn over (an apparent dead battery even though it was new). He pushed started it and popped the clutch, and it started. Then, he went somewhere else, stopped the engine, and then later, it started!
      I'm trying to help him fix the bike. I did read somewhere that some people have had shorts with respect to the ignition key. As I mentioned earlier, all of your checks with voltages and ohms all checked out correctly. Any ideas on why his battery doesn't seem to stay charged? He's been keeping it on a trickle charger after he rides.
      Thanks again. Your videos are excellent!!

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Electrical problems can be difficult to diagnose sometimes. Sounds like your charging system is working. It could be a bad connection somewhere, corrosion, Honda rectifiers have been known to stop functioning when hot sometimes...then go right back to normal and test good. It comes down to systematic elimination. If it only is an issue when hot, start with rectifier. If it's random, then you just have to keep testing and checking from ignition to battery until something jumps out at you.

    Hi John, Great Video! About what AC voltage should be coming out the Stator? I've checked both the Stator and Rectifier and is within the specs for the initial tests.

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's happening with it? If the stator/rectifier test are within spec, are you not getting the right voltage charging at the battery test?

    • @8710795
      @8710795 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both Check out fine with the meter. Recently on a trip the bike died, 4.7 volts left in battery. I've charged battery back to 13.1. Completed the tests and to my surprise they all tested fine. Confused.

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So could be a couple things...Honda's have a rectifier heat issue sometimes. When the rectifier gets hot, it stops functioning properly so the bike will draw off the battery. Once cold, it will work fine again. Hard to diag since it's intermittent. Also, check the wiring from the stator all the way to the battery, there may be a loose connection or corrosion.

      Partzilla ok thanks so now I'm more confused then. I dropped a brand new charged battery in the bike, and on my first ride about 20 miles in, it left me stranded, totally dead. When I got it home I switched batteries and it fired right up. I tried to charge the new battery and it would no longer take a charge. Any ideas as to cause?

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's the output of your stator?

    • @edwinnieves5476
      @edwinnieves5476 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Partzilla it was between .3 to .4

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No no, actual voltage output. My guess is it's not charging your battery, so it'll run until the battery dies then goes dead. Just trying to confirm. Could be a broken connection or wire as well.

    I got a question in your opinion how long do you think they'll make parts for the VTX Brand since Its been 10 years out of production

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob -- That's really a question for Honda. It all depends on how much overstock they have. If there's enough popularity even if they run out they will do small recasting runs. BUT -- if we had to guess -- we imagine that parts will be around for a long time to come especially because there are so many carryovers that are in production today that are based off or use that exact same engine

      I make Yamaha parts where I work and Yamaha will place what is called a (service run order) to keep basic stocks replenished. You may have to order it it and wait a week or so, but usually Yamaha will order 100 to 200 peices just to maintain special orders.

      Very similar process for the 1300. You will need to test the stator and regulator/rectifier. Once you test the voltage should be able to tell what's not working properly.
