- I am so glad you would like to learn tai chi. It is going to be one of the most enjoy and rewarding activities for you. Start with a little research. Ask yourself why you want to learn tai chi? If your purpose is to gain more control to a medical condition like arthritis, diabetes or heart condition. Or just for better health, to reduce stress, improve immunity, improve balance, to prevent falls and be happier and healthier. Then, tai chi for health would be a great place to start.
The next step is to find a good teacher. Talk to the teacher, or visit his or her class, find out if the teacher understand how to help achieve your objective. If possible watch a class, talk to participants to find out if this class is right for you.
If you choose to start with one of my Tai Chi for Health programs, Tai Chi for Beginners or Tai Chi for Arthritis would be a good one to start with, you don’t have to have arthritis to learn Tai Chi for Arthritis. It has a gentle but powerfully healing property, especially safe for people with arthritis or other chronic conditions. It is easy to learn, very good at releasing stress, enhancing healing, and improving balance and preventing falls among many other health benefits. The Centers for Disease control and prevention, USA National council of ageing recommend this program for fall prevention and to improve health and wellness. Arthritis foundations around the world support it. It is a very nice short program suitable for anyone, especially if you like a gentle start. Or you could start with the Tai Chi for Beginners based on the most popular Yang style 24 Forms. I posted a free lesson and introduction of Tai Chi for Beginners on you tube, and in few years we have over 4 millions views!
You can find certified instructors of these programs from our Institute's website or order my instructional DVD which is designed to be like if you were in my class. You can try out the free TH-cam lesson of either program, google my name, free lesson and Tai Chi for Beginners or Tai Chi for Arthritis.
Once you start your tai chi lesson, learn one lesson or part of it that you are comfortable with, and practice that until you are familiar with it before you go to the next lesson. Find a regular time preferably daily, at least most days to practice. Do persevere with your lesson and practice. Tai chi is very different from most exercises we are used to. Where the stronger force the faster the better, in tai chi we move in gentle curve, and emphasize on using softness to build inner energy. Allow yourself time to get used to the rhythm and feel of tai chi, soon you would enjoy the movement and gain the benefits from this wonderful exercise. Slowness and softness is part of nature like yin and yang, we don’t have enough of these in the modern fast paced world. Your body and mind need both slowness and fastness in good balance and in harmony.
Continue to practice regularly, reach out to tai chi enthusiasts around you and practice with them. If you have not done that yet, find teacher who resonates with you. Enjoy your journey to health and wellness.

TH-cam is a great tool to answer & post practical questions and responses for the general public!BRAVO! BRAVO Dr. Lam!
I Started Dr. Lams Tai Chi for Arthritis program in April 2015 at age 60. It was a tremendous help for strengthening my knees and for lower back pain. I attribute not having suffered injuries from a recent car accident where my car was totaled from being rear ended in January 2017. I must give credit to the safety of my car and my consistent and regular conditioning using the practice of Tai Chi. I drank the water (tai chi water). I am a believer sold on Dr. Lam's tai Chi for health programs.
