Same. Now all I can hope is that Trump's authoritarian rhetoric was simply exaggeration, a way to build up his fanbase, but that's probably too much to hope for. Low-key mentally preparing for the mass deportations, a restriction on free speech by attacking media outlets, the jailing of Trump's political opponents, tariffs across the board which will raise inflation, project 2025, and just general incompetence. Makes me feel sick.

Based on the details provided, I really can't imagine how they could possibly find room to make "the main character is gay" a focal point. It would be a little too much like "the climate is spiraling out of control, the world's most powerful nation might turn to fascism, there's a homeless epidemic and housing crisis, and I can't find my car keys."

I haven't watched, but I can say without reservation that Dr. Oliver Sacks, the neurology professor and physician on whom the main character was based, is fascinating, and a great basis for a show. Sacks' parents were both doctors, he did have a difficult childhood and some hardship, and he worked in the Bronx. The thing that interests me is their handling of his patients, all of whom had interesting neurological disorders. His empathic case stories, and the level of detail he collected, led to his ability to understand, ameliorate, and sometimes cure, his patients. He was the doctor Robin Williams played in Awakenings. For those who enjoy interesting reads, he has written many books about his patients conditions, including An Anthropologist on Mars, which includes autism, and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. If the show is even 20% as interesting as Sacks and his patients, I can't wait!

My pitch: one of the character's backstory is that they grew up on their parents' Jurassic park. It just turns out that in this reality, that's just a regular thing. People figured out how to actually do a "Jurassic Park" style attraction safely. So this world just has dinosaur parks. One episode where they go to a dinosaur park, and the whole episode the audience is expecting a disaster like the fictional Jurassic Park, with everything going off the rails. Nope, nothing goes wrong. They've actually figured out how to do it safely, and it's just like visiting a zoo. This appears in one episode and is NEVER addressed again.

Quinto is an AMAZING actor. I legitimately hated him (his character) during the first two seasons of Heroes. I admittedly never got around to watching the rest of the series, but his portrayal of his character made me hate him so much because he did such a good job.
Jake Gyllenhaal did the same in Nighcrawler and Anna Gunn did it in Breaking Bad.
It's not common that a performer can elicit actual HATE that lingers from me for their character, but when it happens, they are AMAZING at their job.

    • @BrainMedicine
      @BrainMedicine 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

He was absolutely the best part of Heroes. Part of that show's problem was that they couldn't bear to let him go even though his character arc resolved quite early on, so had to jump through increasingly ridiculous narrative hoops to keep him around. He was also a great Spock - I'm not a huge fan of those movies, but that's not because of the cast, who were uniformly excellent.

Sylar is a favorite in our household. We don't really hate him the same way, but we agree Quinto did a fantastic job. Just, uh...maybe don't go back and finish the series. It never truly recovered after the writer's strike towards the end of season 1.
As for actors that sold their characters? Imelda Staunton. Everyone can agree Voldemort was evil, but almost anyone will tell you that they hate Umbridge FAR more than they hate him. And she sold the movie version to an insane degree. To the point where watching her be a sweetheart in interviews is a bit disorienting :P

I loved Sylar, well, I loved to hate him. That role landed Quinto as one of my favorite actors from then on. Another two actors who have proven very able to be absolutely hated is Rosamund Pike(The wife Gone Girl and main character in I Care A Lot) and Jeff Gleeson(Joffrey Baratheon).
Such absolutely visceral disgust with their characters is a hallmark of great acting chops.

Sounds like there's a bit of a House reference there too. If Dr. Gregory House was intended to be the medical equivalent of Sherlock Holmes, then Dr. Oliver Wolf might be a medical cross between Oliver Sacks and the fictional Nero Wolfe, from Rex Stout's excellent mystery novels. Stout couldn't quite equal the great British mystery writers, imo, (meaning Conan-Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, or PD James), but his books are still well worth reading!

Ive seen billboards for the show and having watched this video wouldve never guessed such a generic-looking prestige-hopeful hospital drama was actually overflowing with silly goofy fun times. This video was such a great sell for the show, i am watching ASAP!

Taking mystery drugs instead of having a lab analyze them is a bold move. As much as I doubt that an MD would do such a thing, a doc on PCP sounds entertaining.

I stumbled on the trailer months ago and thought, "Wait a second, why does Zachary Quinto look so much like Oliver Sacks?"
Lo and behold, one of the show's numerous gimmicks is that it is based on Oliver Sacks.

I bought an ounce of White Rhino(RINO) out of respect for those on the other side, putting country ahead of party and voting to save our Republic. I voted weeks ago. I'll resurface on Friday to see if I have to make a break for the border to claim political asylum.

Along the first miles of every long trail you will find the detritus of every rookie hiker who realized they packed and are attempting to carry WAY TOO MUCH and as they’re already committed, they have no choice but to dump stuff.
That’s this show. If they’re allowed to cook, they’ll slough off premise after hook after gimmick until the essence of the premise remains - the good stuff, the core stuff.
And I bet the things that go first all have to do with character neurodiversity.

This show sounds wild. I hadn't bothered watching it because most medical dramas bore me now (they started to become a little too rote and often turn up the melodrama or make things too ridiculous to enjoy, or they become a soap, like Grey's Anatomy). That said, I have been watching one through Disney+: Doctor Odyssey - the medical drama set on an upscale cruise ship. That's a concept that's just too ridiculous not to enjoy, and I think the leads (well, Joshua Jackson, Philippa Soo, and Don Johnson) are charismatic enough to carry it...far more than I'd expected, but there are some wild cases and things happening in the few episodes of the show released so far.
