Undoubtedly. When he fessed up to his friend that he hated his boots, it was 100% because he (Chidi) would feel better about it. He didn't want it weighing on him so he did what he needed to fix it without taking into account how it would make his friend feel at all. 100% selfishness. I think in general living your life by a single moral philosophy is always going to cause issues because life isn't black and white enough for that. No single philosophy is going to be able to take every possible situation into account. I think living based on a specific set of morals no matter what, and refusing to ever consider that they might not work in certain situations is itself selfish because ultimately all it does is make things easier for you when you need to make a difficult decision. If you have to make a decision that whichever choice you make someone will get hurt, a normal person will feel bad that they caused harm to someone, even if there wasn't a better choice. Having a moral philosophy to lean on doesn't relieve you of having to make that choice, all it does is leave you with a clear conscience about your decision. Instead of feeling bad about the person that got hurt you could blame it on your personal code, even if without the code you actually would have made the choice that hurt others less. I'm guessing you weren't expecting such a long answer, but I apparently don't know how to stop writing once I start.

@Pasclesrm what a ridiculous remark. Social norms are not ethically nor morally enforceable unless it's something that not participating in would cause undue harm to others. This isn't one of those. It's wrong to force a cake (or anything else for that matter) on someone who doesn't want it just because it makes you feel good and will later get you a reward [this is selfish intent, i.e. self-serving] that's forced instead of freely given.
