As someone who owns and drives both the GX460 and the 4Runner, I think the GX is much more comfortable for road trips. Unfortunately, the V8 requires Premium gasoline, so is significantly costlier. The 4Runner is a reliable workhorse, that is more utilitarian while tolerable for road trips. If cost was not an issue, I’d choose the GX for the comfort of long cross-country trips.
I'm going to let you in on a secret. The GX runs just fine on regular octane. My land cruiser "requires premium" too. but its well documented it makes no difference in longevity or mpg whatsoever.
GX sales were up by 10% in 2020 while the 4Runner had another solid year in a down market. Who knows how many discount 4X4s Toyota could sell if they still offered something priced like the FJ was when it first came out.
Best on the Road? But you guys just keep talking about differences in design, features, value proposition, etc but where's the actual comparison of the on road performance? Acceleration, dB especially HT vs AT tyres, cargo volume, parking, etc

The trd pro Fox shocks are probably higher grade than the Lexus coilovers. My 470 coilovers were kyb stock and my Bilstein 5100 are much better. BTW the boys at GXOR have many better shock options and often look down at the 5100s.
Just on looks I would take the 4 runner in a heartbeat, but if I had to live with one daily in my very urban setting it would be the Lexus without hesitation.

"...it is useless but luckily you don't drive the FJ Cruiser from the back seat you typically drive it from the front seat, if you're carrying passengers it sucks to be them..." I felt that.
I have owned both the FJ and currently a GX 460 and the GX is built to such a high standard it's really true about Japanese craftsmenship with both of these vehicles. Cons of the GX are fuel economy but I knew that before I bought it. Fulltime 4wd with a reliable Toyota V-8 is where it shines. Plenty of torgue to get it moving down the road but it's not a racecar for sure. I would say the engine power is "OK". The torque is the best benefit with an example of a 50mph speed it sits around 1200 rpm. At 70-75 mph it sits around 1800 -1900 rpm. Average hwy mileage is around 21 mpg with 4 passengers and gear. In town due to it's weight, it is getting around 16-17 mpg starting and stopping. One of the most reliable engines and drivetrain combos in modern times. These Gx 460s are each taken to a track and driven by 2 people for a series of driving tests before it can ship. This is how you get the quality in a product they have skilled workers and they take pride in the cars they produce. Go watch a factory tour video and see how things are made at Lexus. Pretty fanatical.
The 30 horses and 42 ft lbs of torque of the GX make a huge difference when climbing in the mountains. Better payload in the GX and most of us have a Sawzall!! Best of all a 2 year old GX cost similar to the 4 Runner that is 2 years old. GX all the way!!
Once you drive a GX you never want anything else . It’s turning circumference is even better than 4 runner . One day when mine gets old I’ll chop the front bummer , and get off road tires . If the air bags go , I’ll lift it . Can hardly wait . Plus wife loves it
2010-2013 Gx460 had the best front end. Best front end clearance and was the face-lift before the "Predator mouth". Looked better, functioned better and essentially the same truck/engine etc as the most current ones. One example of how capable the GX was: First off road trip in the GX was on street tires and stock everything. 4 runner that was lifted on all terrains had trouble getting up some obstacles. GX in stock form got up no problem. You guys need to get a hold of one of the earliest versions of the Gx and try it out.
I really wanted a four runner but could not pick between the limited package or offroad, fulltime 4x4 vs kdss. I got GX for the best of both worlds and I am super happy with my decision, it may not look as cool but it's definately a better truck.
I have owned a 4Runner and a GX460 and I have to say I went from the Toyota to the Lexus because the 4Runner Is absolutely gutless once you get people and gear inside of it. The Lexus is not only more comfortable but that extra power makes all the driving experience.
Most comfortable and daily drivable is the gx. Most offroad capable and for weekend fun, FJ. The middle ground is the 4Runner. The GX 4.6 V8 is hands down better than the 4.0 V6. Basically more usable torque which makes daily driving easy. Also the GX is fulltime 4WD which helps maintain traction at all times in all terrain.
I love how people talk about the GX460's shortcomings, yet it's always there being stacked up against whatever the new hotness is at the moment. I'll admit that I have no love for the 2021 Lexus GX body molding crap. Yes; I agree that they should go back to the 2010 front end and throw on some rock sliders. But if you have 2021 GX460 dollars then cutting the bumper cover (to add an actual bumper) and replace the running boards, it just budget dust. The other two items that you may want to be change out (to hit the trail) are the tires and the intake (with an AFe Momentum GT Cold Air Intake System w/Pro 5R Filter Media) for the grunt the kid was tweaking about (basically you need to take that bubble wrap off the hammer so you can use it). I don't know what happened to the 0-60 time for the 2021 GX, but my 2010 is under 7 seconds at sea level. I'm okay with it being normally aspirated because the average elevation of the United States is roughly 2500 feet above sea level and that pushes my stock HP down to about 278. As for gas mileage; I don’t mind paying at the pump as I’m out $0.00 in repairs on my 2010 (correction I did replace a fuse back in 2018) and my GX depreciates at a rate of about $4.00 a day (5 year average). This is some I could never brag about with any of my Mercedes vehicles. So bash away guys; as I’ve literally don’t see a need to purchase a need SUV to replace the GX I have. But in the future, please don’t tell me how crappy a 4runner is and then how great a Land Rover is (they are much better these days) as it’s like peeing on my leg and telling me it’s raining. BTW; I still absolutely love the show…..You guys know how to have fun…….P.S. The 2021 Lexus GX460 is what happens when you let the Marketing guys manage a Toyota Prado.
The shortcomings of the GX impact only extreme offroading, so 2% of the actual 5% of owners who off-road them in the first place... It's inconsequential. Most of the people doing crazy offroading aren't buying new/paying Lexus anyway, so they're irrelevant. The few people offroading these are taking them on dirt and gravel roads, pastures, live in heavy snow and other "real world" scenarios rather than extreme hobbyist rock climbing nonsense.
Owned an FJ, sold it, I now have a GX, it’s way more comfortable and more powerful and bigger than the other two. FJ’s are cool as hell but I prefer the GX.
4runner for overall(on road vs off-road). I’ve been in many cars with more gears but really... the 4runner 5speed tuning is almost perfect. You can’t even notice it and it shifts so good with the right pull to it.

The GX right now makes more sense. Any TRD Pro in California is going over MSRP by 5-10k. The 2022 GX has a totally redesigned center console and infotainment screen. And locally I can get it cheaper than the 4Runner go figure. The V8 will last for a million miles. The FJ is discontinued so I won’t mention it since I’m looking at a new vehicle. This GX is loaded and is over 70K. GX’s start at 55k and a decent optioned one at 60 is still way more luxurious and enough to tackle the great outdoors. A 2” lift for 1500 bucks plus installation and some bigger tires and it’ll eat some decent trails for breakfast Check out some TH-cam videos on lifted GX’s they are no slouch.
The 4Runner is awful on the hwy at elevation. Driving between CO & NM @75 w/hills, wind, we got 11mpg, white knuckled. Great in town and off road though. Went with an LR3 and an LR4. So comfy and capable.
I guess it all depends on what you need. The GX with V8 and 4 wheel has been great for towing my tritoon boat and pulling it out of the water on a steep wet boat ramp. I also plan on getting a camper so I'm not sure I would want the 4Runner V6.
Owning both the Gx460 and the FJ, I can agree with a lot of the comments. The FJ was my daily driver and it’s awful with kids especially car seats. For two people it’s great and will go anywhere but it’s not a family vehicle

hey. that 4.6Lv8 getting 16mpg is good. my dad has a 2016 ford edge awd with a 3.5L v6 and despite it not being or feeling fast it gets an average of 15l/100km which is about 15.5 mpg( he doesnt even drive fast).... so the gx has 2 more cylinders, 2 more seats, is more heavy, makes more power, can actually go offroad and gets better miles to the gallon than a 3.5L v6 from ford...
Guys, I love your content, but it's too hard to keep up with so many channels. Just create a consolidated brand, you're big enough and have a huge following!
I have both a gx and t4r trail, both lightly modded and it’s a toss up. For family stuff/road trips goes to the gx and for off road and camping I go with the t4r. My bro had a fj and he eventually changed to a 4runner due to the low viz and horrendous highway noise.
Roman is at that age where comfort is the #1 deciding factor. Lol. Stupid thing is if they just gave it the same treatment as the one they converted for that show they would probably sell tens of thousands at 80k to 90k. People would by that comfort and luxury if it just had 33" tires, a high quality 3" lift without the air suspension, a locker and some real bumpers and skid plates for protection.

@@Cristobal_Ygnacio_Arriaga it honestly doesn’t need a v8 I do agree however the ride isn’t all that comfortable if it was possible to put the Lexus suspension on the Prado I wouldn’t mind buying one
I just replied with the same comment and have said previously that no Toyota SUV comes with air suspension. They should do a fact check otherwise their credibility in their reviews can be put to question, as Roman was once reviewing the LX, RR and Lincoln navigator, said that LX in its highest setting has a harsh ride yet the spring rates don't change as its coil sprung not air sprung.
Fj cruiser, 4th gen 4Runner, Lexus GX470, and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 are on the same J120 platform 5th gen 4Runner, Lexus GX460, and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 are all on the J150 platform. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
I think the key here is if you could only have one “do it all” vehicle, the 4Runner wins every time. I’m not a Toyota fan boy, but if I had to downsize and could only have one family car it would probably be a 4Runner. The wrangler lacks interior space for a family of 5 and the Bronco isn’t out yet. Subarus are cool but are soft roaders (I say that owning one and a couple of 4x4s) And I’m gonna get heat for this too but the Tacoma isn’t practical for the price. If you need a truck go full size. If you want Toyota reliability get a 4Runner.
you are right about the tacoma. my wife's old CRV has more rear seat room than the taco. i have an 18' 4R off road and the rear seats are perfect for the size of the 4R.
Oh come on, you can get a brand new GX base model for 53-55k. You can't compare a luxury model to 4 runner price wise. Furthermore the air suspension doesn't change the ride quality that significantly. It only raises the vehicle in the rear.
How are the rear doors on the FJ any worse than having a 2 door vehicle where people can’t get out easily? And you never open the rear window while driving as fumes are sucked into the rear of the cabin.
For the FJ, one thing you quickly learn is: If you have rear passengers, you let them get out BEFORE backing up in a tight parking spot. Otherwise some people will get boxed in between doors...
I consistently get 20 mpg on my gen 4 4 runner v6. Which has the same engine and transmission as the 4runner in the video. Mine gas 270K miles on it . Also if I baby it ie drive it slowly and steady( hypermilling) I can get up to 22 mpg
I'm sorry guys, I keep mentioning it, but no toyota SUV has air suspension. They are all coil springs. The only toyota to come with air suspension is the lexus LS and century. The rest of Toyota's AHC is done by hydraulics fitted above the suspension towers.
Great video. I love all three of these and seriously looking at a GX460 and 4Runner to be honest. Also looking at a Nissan Armada(Patrol) for hauling the fam damily.
Look at a used GX460 around 13’. I love mine and it was a no brainer in cost comparison, power and features compared to the 4Runner. The luxury feel and tank like feel is just a perfect mix. They say there isn’t much of a power difference but switch the 4Runner to 4wd and it’s a major difference.
I wanted a 4 runner trd, simply not available last year , dealer said he only got 2/ yr and no customization. So bought a 2017 GX 460 luxury kdss, trans cooler , crawl , the works ,for $15000 less than new fully loaded 4Runner . It’ll last more than 10 years easy . After driving it , I’ll never want anything else and happy I didn’t get 4 runner ( wife over the top ) . Can’t compare
The 4Runner is just the most versatile. Comfortable on road yet just a capable tank off road. It’s just the perfect balance between the other 2, it’s more similar to the fj but feels like a perfect middle ground and just the most versatile for all different driving and lifestyles. The fj is still a super fun awesome little truck but not as versatile as the 4Runner and doesn’t have as much room.
I have both an FJ Cruiser and a GX460; the 2010 FJ was $28K and has 94K mile, the 2012 GX was $24K. I thinks they are both great vehicles but it is hard to not like the luxury of a Lexus. I am taking the FJ off-road to Lake City but I am taking the Lexus on the road trip to Denver.

If $400 over 10,000 miles is significant to you, then you shouldn't own any of these vehicles.
@@sly9263 I am confused where does the extra $400 come from?
@@1pittmanj then you didnt look at the comment I replied to in this very short thread
I have driven the Prado and 4 Runner for many kilometers. GX for the win.
The 4R and the Prado are the Gx and vice versa
GX sales were up by 10% in 2020 while the 4Runner had another solid year in a down market. Who knows how many discount 4X4s Toyota could sell if they still offered something priced like the FJ was when it first came out.
“You can’t keep expecting people to keep on buying the 4Runner “ except they are...129,000 in 2020...the year of the pandemic. (131,000 in 2019) !!
I bought one in May. Love it! Idk why I waited so long. Everything I was looking for. Reliable, capable, and low tech.
Lol I bought one two weeks ago. I love it.
Beastly apocalypse vehicle
Gx is king baby
Best on the Road? But you guys just keep talking about differences in design, features, value proposition, etc but where's the actual comparison of the on road performance? Acceleration, dB especially HT vs AT tyres, cargo volume, parking, etc
There's a lexus in the group, pretty much 100% it's the best. But yes, would've been nice to compare that to the others. All they talk about is how old they are blah blah.
Nothing about comfort and road noise. Fj road noise is awful above 80kmh
Watch savage geese for that lol
The trd pro Fox shocks are probably higher grade than the Lexus coilovers. My 470 coilovers were kyb stock and my Bilstein 5100 are much better. BTW the boys at GXOR have many better shock options and often look down at the 5100s.
Just on looks I would take the 4 runner in a heartbeat, but if I had to live with one daily in my very urban setting it would be the Lexus without hesitation.
That is exactly the choice I made, but I do get more seat time in my Tacoma.
Don’t test drive the GX , you won’t go back .....best deal out there find a 2-3 year old GX ....it’ll last forever and cheaper than new 4 runner . Only problem is poor gas mileage .....but with less maintenance, I’ll plan for that
You’re missing out then. GX crushes off road
@@DDL-n2u you're saying I'm missing out on something by choosing a more capable off-road vehicle for my Urban setting oh ok you know I have to go pick up a couch next week maybe I should just buy a semi truck.
@@GeneralJameson I see this flew completely over your head. The Lexus is MORE capable and is more civilized in town. That's the point.
I got my 2020 Gx460 premium with sport design package for $51270. “Makes a lot of sense” I would not get the luxury trim for $70+ . Just missing the rear bags which I didn’t want and I could install crawl control mod for $$ cheap.

Every weakness the GX has can be fixed with a little cash

The 4runner is a very well built vehicle. More gears in the transmission and that’s all it needs. Leave it alone!
I think not needs a better turn radius.
@@marimashburn7796 I have a 2010, first year of the fifth gen and I’ve never had any complaints about the turning radius
A Toyota 4Runner was always a vehicle I wanted to buy until I started traveling abroad and fell in love with the prado. The original 4runner with the removable top will always be special to me but I'll take a gx over a newer 4runner any day! I love my gx!
The 4runner is almost completely identical to the Prado
@@noctilucent7396 the gx460 literally is a prado…it just has some extra poshness and a new badge. The 4runner is a different vehicle, but is still pretty similar.

@@colesisler582 the 4R and the gx aren't sold over seas, the gx is the luxury version of the Prado kinda like the LX is the luxury version of the LC. The 4runner is the Spartan version of the Prado like the LC is the Spartan Version of the LX.
@@colesisler582 the reason the 4R sells more than the GX in the used market is because long term will out last the gx, it's litterly the same thing but weighs two morbidly obese people less so the exact same components will last longer due to less stress put on them. It's the same thing but a different format. After the 3rd gen 4Runner they moved from the hilux surf platform to the Prado platform. Anyway, 4R if you want a work horse Gx is you want a luxurious 4R, it's mind blowing how few people know the 4R is a LC Prado. It's probably a great hidden secret.
"...it is useless but luckily you don't drive the FJ Cruiser from the back seat you typically drive it from the front seat, if you're carrying passengers it sucks to be them..."
I felt that.
Plus wife loves it
This is one of the best reviews you guys have done together in a long time. Classic TFL Review from the OG days. 🍻😎🍻
FJ is the best Toy given its age and off road worthiness.
I just love the Lexus GX460... Although it is expensive.
Lexus is hands down the best on road vehicle out of the three, but give me the 4runner anyday.
My heart says FJ, my brain tells me it is 4Runner.
Your brain is smart...
Me too, but my wallet tells me it is Rav4.
If there was ever a time for a new FJ it's right now. Come on Toyota!
Consider building out a used GX................................
I really wanted a four runner but could not pick between the limited package or offroad, fulltime 4x4 vs kdss. I got GX for the best of both worlds and I am super happy with my decision, it may not look as cool but it's definately a better truck.
I just bought a 2013 gx460 and I love it. Super comfortable and capable in the snow
That was a very well put together video guys and hilarious!!!
The 4 runner anyday!! The front end of that Lexus is hideous!
Dude the 2013 and earlier models had a nicer grill
I totally agree!!! I love the gx but the big ass grill turns me off and where is the bumper ???!!!
Gx 460 for me. Because I can.
I’ll be honest I own an FJ cruiser it’s like being in a dryer filled with bricks but does make a striking presence
4runner for overall(on road vs off-road). I’ve been in many cars with more gears but really... the 4runner 5speed tuning is almost perfect. You can’t even notice it and it shifts so good with the right pull to it.
The GX shifts far smoother. I have owned both.
Until you get on the HWY
Man, you think the FJC is tight? my cousin has one with a 3rd row installed that he takes his whole family wheeling in. 7 people! No I don't know why either.
Except in five years they're all the same price and suddenly the Lexus is a slam dunk.
Really seems like the 4Runner is just an updated transmission away from being a near perfect all rounder.
A new transmission and engine, and some more tech. Not too much, but just a little more....
@@chasdj1915 I mean tech is perfect rn. Cept for cameras. But it has latest safety features and apple carplay etc. And trans and engine are reliable af and most people dont want them to change
10:50 "You can't expect people to keep buying the 4runners" Thanks for the laugh! You were joking right?
On the road GX is the best there is no contest. And you can feel the price difference in driving it. There is a big difference unlike other brands
GX for sure. A beast off road yet sexy on road.
52K for the 4 runner "OR" 60K for the *2022 Green GX460 "Black line special edition"* with a V8 and all that luxury, it's a no brainer. Buy both, I have a 5th gen 4r and my GX is arriving at the port of los angeles in 2 days.
4runner 🔥🔥👊🏻👊🏻
hey. that 4.6Lv8 getting 16mpg is good. my dad has a 2016 ford edge awd with a 3.5L v6 and despite it not being or feeling fast it gets an average of 15l/100km which is about 15.5 mpg( he doesnt even drive fast).... so the gx has 2 more cylinders, 2 more seats, is more heavy, makes more power, can actually go offroad and gets better miles to the gallon than a 3.5L v6 from ford...
Hey TFL!!!! Morning!!! Thanks for waking me up!!😎💙Love this show... pizza 🍕 for breakfast!!

I have both a gx and t4r trail, both lightly modded and it’s a toss up. For family stuff/road trips goes to the gx and for off road and camping I go with the t4r. My bro had a fj and he eventually changed to a 4runner due to the low viz and horrendous highway noise.
The 4Runner has something that the GX and the FJ definitely don’t have. APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO!!!
Is that Left Hand Reservoir out at the Boulder Res? One of my favorite starting points for runs out here in Boulder!
4runner all the way!!!
I didn't know Toyota sold a v8 Prado in the US with a Lexus badge. in Australia they're diesel only I believe

Is it air or hydraulic assisted suspension on the GX?
I just replied with the same comment and have said previously that no Toyota SUV comes with air suspension. They should do a fact check otherwise their credibility in their reviews can be put to question, as Roman was once reviewing the LX, RR and Lincoln navigator, said that LX in its highest setting has a harsh ride yet the spring rates don't change as its coil sprung not air sprung.
I have an lx470 and I know that too. I almost spill my coffee when they said air suspension, twice 😂
Toyota will never use air suspension because they know it needs constant maintenance.

Fj cruiser, 4th gen 4Runner, Lexus GX470, and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 are on the same J120 platform
5th gen 4Runner, Lexus GX460, and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 are all on the J150 platform.
Subarus are cool but are soft roaders (I say that owning one and a couple of 4x4s)
And I’m gonna get heat for this too but the Tacoma isn’t practical for the price. If you need a truck go full size. If you want Toyota reliability get a 4Runner.
you are right about the tacoma. my wife's old CRV has more rear seat room than the taco. i have an 18' 4R off road and the rear seats are perfect for the size of the 4R.
When these 3 work together your guaranteed to laugh your tail off the entire episode.
Oh come on, you can get a brand new GX base model for 53-55k. You can't compare a luxury model to 4 runner price wise. Furthermore the air suspension doesn't change the ride quality that significantly. It only raises the vehicle in the rear.
Loved the format. Excellent way to cover the pros and cons. Great video.
FJ is my number one choice
I consistently get 20 mpg on my gen 4 4 runner v6. Which has the same engine and transmission as the 4runner in the video. Mine gas 270K miles on it .
Also if I baby it ie drive it slowly and steady( hypermilling) I can get up to 22 mpg
@arabiantxn thx for this comment. I was wondering what kind of real world mpg 4runner got since Toyota rates it at 16/19 mpg
Though we have lost the land cruiser
Atleast we have the 4Runner,gx460 and sequoia
we still have the land cruiser, it's just wearing a lexus tuxedo (LX570)
A wife owner Range Rover, said to me one day.....your FJ is a better ride then his Range Rover!!!
What if you can only find a 2018 gx460 local vs only base trim 2010-2013 out of state?
The comment about the cement color really dates the 4Runner. I’ve head of “old as dirt” but not “old as cement”. That was brutal.
Nice jacket, Tommy!
We have a gx460 and love it. Next step is to put a nice 3in lift with some offroad capable tires.
It only has air spring for the leveling suspensiom in the rear which is a disadvantagee ... the front is a normal coil spring dual wishbone suspension
Excellent and entertaining video guys. Brightened my lunch break. Cheers
Nice vid 😎
I'm sorry guys, I keep mentioning it, but no toyota SUV has air suspension. They are all coil springs. The only toyota to come with air suspension is the lexus LS and century. The rest of Toyota's AHC is done by hydraulics fitted above the suspension towers.
@@audreyappliance the GX doesn't have air suspension, although the front doesn't also have the hydraulic lift kits.
I have never laughed so much while watching a "TFL" video. Who knew Tommy and Roman could be so funny and informative at the same time? Carry on.
Great video. I love all three of these and seriously looking at a GX460 and 4Runner to be honest. Also looking at a Nissan Armada(Patrol) for hauling the fam damily.
Here in Indiana tbh. Prob not an FJ because it’s old, but would love to have one for a toy indeed Roman. It is def an amazing off-roader.
Dont overlook the Sequoia, it has full third row with plenty of headroom and a very solid v8.
Would have loved a 4th surprise entry...a 100 series TOYOTA Land Cruiser...wonder who would have won that one?
The 4Runner is just the most versatile. Comfortable on road yet just a capable tank off road. It’s just the perfect balance between the other 2, it’s more similar to the fj but feels like a perfect middle ground and just the most versatile for all different driving and lifestyles. The fj is still a super fun awesome little truck but not as versatile as the 4Runner and doesn’t have as much room.
used the GX drops value quicker than the 4runner. Used mid 2010's are similarly priced. do you take the GX then over 4runner?
Yes. Insurance is more and it uses more gas, so keep that in mind. But overall the gx is a much better vehicle for everything but off road.
