  • Ice Road Wyoming, I-80 | A Day In The Life Of A Truck Driver
    This was CRAZY guys! In this video, BKM and I get stuck in the middle of the icy interstate 80 in Wyoming. Wintertime, as a truck driver, can be pretty treacherous. Make sure you're prepared for the weather conditions, or you can easily end up in the predicament we were in. Stay safe out there drivers!

    Been at this 38 years, no accidents. If the roads are not clear, park the truck early so you get a safe spot. Always remember, no one pays you enough to chain and risk your life. If the load is late, they will get over it. If you wreck, they will terminate you or cancel your contract and not give a damn about you. Drive smart, stay safe.

      I think FedEx requires you to chain up if the roads are not shutdown. LTL carriers are like that. Same for ups & yellow freight.

    Always carry a backpack of supplies with snacks water and anything you may need, I plow I-25 in Denver, Vail and different mountains in Colorado and sometimes even we get stuck and are there for a while before we get help. Having a backpack has always helped me even if it takes up space I’ll rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it. For some reason I always blow cold air on my windshield and never have a problem while plowing, I just can’t stand having the heat on while driving, I feel like I’m about to fall asleep when the heat is on. Be safe and just drive smart.

    I live in Wyoming and we close 80 a lot. Weather on that road can change quickly, or you may have one area that's fine, then 30 miles down the road it's horrible. Ever since there was a huge pile-up several years ago that resulted in multiple deaths, WYDOT closes it quite frequently. That section around Rawlins and Elk Mountain is especially hazardous. Not only was that ice, that was black ice. Traveling through here it's best to have a survival kit of some kind in the winter. People tend to forget there's a lot of empty space between towns here.

    Drove eastbound on I-80 across the Red Desert in January 1975 the road was solid ice with blizzard conditions. Drove 10 or 15 mph with wheel turned to the left. There were semis in the median that hardly broke through the snow. I was used to winter driving but that was a real thrill!

    I was south of Pittsburgh heading down to West Virginia one night in a snowstorm during my rookie winter and we all got stuck climbing a hill (trucks and 4 wheelers alike). I tried to keep climbing and the drives started spinning out, jack knifing the trailer toward the flat bed next to me. We all sat there for about two hours and the heat from the truck ended up melting off enough snow and ice beneath the truck that I was able to get traction and start moving again. I climbed the hill and the lights of an exit three miles or so never looked so inviting. Took the exit and parked in a grocery store parking lot for the night. I was so relieved to be shut down for the night! That experience left an indelible impression, for sure!

      One more quick note/lesson learned. About an hour before I got stuck on the hill, I'd stopped at a rest area to replace my windshield wipers because they were no longer keeping up with the snow. I thought to myself at the time, "self...it's starting to snow pretty hard. Maybe you should just shut down here for the night." Did I listen? Nooo, of course not. My ego wrote a check that my skill set could not cash and I kept plugging away. Lesson learned: I no longer ignore that inner voice.

Chains got me out of it every time. Single chains on the drives. A single on one side of the lead trl. A single on the con gear and a single on the rear trl. Sure footed as a mountain goat. Try it if you need to move across that ice again. Guys will tell you chains don't work on that... that's a lie... I've done it.. it works.

If there wasn't a video of it, along with how crazy other drivers were being and the whiteout conditions early on, I don't know if I would have believed it! Nice videos of I-25 /i-80 during bad weather. Shows the struggle of being a truck driver thru bad weather. What surprises me more is that almost no trucks seems to have light above their windshield giving light ahead and above the weather like most trucks do in Scandinavia, especially those driving far up north. The struggle with chain is real and scary especially when doing it in the traffic.

    When I was otr, I wouldn’t drive through anything more than a light snow. I didn’t drive at night if temperatures were close enough to freezing for black ice to be a possibility. I didn’t drive through extremely high winds. It’s simply not worth it. I’m running a local overnight route for recycling now. It doesn’t snow here but flooding, winds, hurricanes are common. If I see water in the road I’ll skip and come back. I don’t work through hurricanes and I don’t dump in high winds. When I used to do otr long haul, I would shut down at the beginning of a snow/ice storm so I wouldn’t have to fight for parking later. I’ve seen storms move in so quickly out west that the DOT didn’t even have time to treat the roads properly and they’d be covered within minutes to an hour, impassable after a while. Where I live, hurricanes can move in extremely fast and I don’t like to get caught up mid route in those winds or even tropical storms. Last winter I missed a tornado by minutes at one of my stops. After I left the school, a tornado cut through and tossed cars all over the parking lot like toys.

    As long as drivers aren't speeding I do my best to facilitate them passing if I'm traveling below the speed limit, different folks have different comfort zones due to years behind the wheel, local knowledge, and where they are from as there's a huge difference between Georgia trucks and Canadian trucks operating requirements.....if you had chains and you didn't put them on is probably why the troopers were angry just saying, my advice to the novice drivers is to wait until the storm clears before they attempt treacherous areas , sadly there are a lot of impatient people out there ,the best thing to do is ignore them which takes away their power, I80 is nothing compared to the trans Canada lol....

    In case anyone is wondering. There was no chain law, no one else was chained, and we could not chain because it was not safe to do so. Just wanted to get that out of the way.

    • @socal87border
      @socal87border 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@snek9353 we only got stuck bcuz of traffic from the Jack knife. So technically it wasn’t my fault. Other drivers driving too fast for conditions and crashing causing slow traffic to make me stall out on ice isn’t my fault. I didn’t need chains until that happened.
      Everyone likes to criticize when just last week I passed at least 20 flipped trucks on I-80 from wind, 7 Jack knifed trucks on I-80 from ice, and 6 damaged trucks from a snow storm on I-70. We are not the problem, and we are extremely capable of doing our jobs safely. More so than most drivers. I think people forget the fact that Shelby is extremely intelligent with a bachelors degree from a major college, and I’m an ex-cop that excels in anything that I do. We have this trucking thing under control lol. Not saying we know everything, because we definitely don’t, but we aren’t the ones crashing and causing issues for everyone else.

    Shelby here is a tip for you, on de-icing the window of your truck and helping to keep it clear. Lemon juice will melt ice, granted it is a bit harsh but it will work to melt ice. Second thing, take an onion and cut it in half, then rub it on the window to help keep it from icing back up. Now that is not a perfect solution, but it will help and should last long enough to get you to some place where you can put RainX on the windows. Now this was told to me by my old science teacher, and it does work oddly. So keep a bottle of lemon juice in the truck, and a couple of onions just for such situations, you will have to reapply the onion from time to time but it does help.
