  • NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE | Tour of Newcastle City Centre from St James' Park to Eldon Square, Grey Street and down to Quayside and the Tyne Bridge
Also watch our video of Newcastle Quayside - • NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE | ...
We took our cameras up to Newcastle Upon Tyne in Tyneside in the North East of England for a 4K walking tour through the stunning City Centre there and what a great place this is!
The last time we were in Newcastle Upon Tyne we filmed around Quayside and up to the castle but this time we thought we'd start our walk at St James' Park the home of Newcastle United, before heading down into Eldon Square, and along to Grey's Monument and then down Grey Street to the Quayside area and the iconic Tyne Bridge.
This Newcastle Upon Tyne walk starts at St James' Park which is the countries eighth biggest football stadium and home to Newcastle United Football Club. We take a look around the outside of the stadium and the various plaques and statues dedicated to former players and managers of the club.
From St James' Park we head into Newcastle City Centre by walking along Strawberry Place and down Leazes Park Road to Percy Street. From here we can see the entrance to Eldon Square so we have a wander down Blackett Street and into Eldon Square itself where we can see Eldon Square Shopping Centre and the central war memorial.
Passing through there we continue along Blackett Street and onto Greys Monument which stands at the junction of Grainger Street and Grey Street
In this walking tour I wanted to show Grey Street in all it's glory because I think this street is absolutely stunning. It has recently been awarded the title of the most instagrammed street in the country and it's easy to see why. This historic street is simply amazing!
There's so much Newcastle Upon Tyne History here. Grey Street is an immaculate Georgian street in the Grainger Town area. The area also includes a mediaeval 13th-century Dominican friary, pieces of the historic Town Walls and many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings.
Grey Street contains the stunning Theatre Royal, the southern entrance to Monument Metro station and the Central Arcade. It is renowned for its Georgian architecture, and was in 2010 voted 'Best street in the UK' by BBC Radio 4 listeners and it's easy to see why.
We stop off at Theatre Royal on Grey Street for a look at the front facade which just looks great!
Further down Grey Street we continue our walking tour and head down over Mosley Street onto Dean Street and then down onto side and round to Sandhill.
From here on our Newcastle Upon Tyne tour we can start to see the iconic Tyne Bridge over the River Tyne.
Before we get to Quayside we see Newcastle Guildhall (which now has a Hard Rock Cafe built into it!) and then we come to Quayside and Hadrian's Wall Path.
As we look east down Quayside we can see past the Tyne Bridge to see the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and across the river we see the shiny silver Sage Gateshead, an events building that hosts concerts and arts and performances.
This walking tour of Newcastle Upon Tyne was filmed before learning any knowledge of this Tyneside city so if there is anything I missed that I should have included please drop it into the comments section so I can add it to my route next time I visit Newcastle City Centre!

I don't know what's with Newcastle and I don't know anyone from there but there's always something in my heart which I don't know how to explain but it makes me love the place though I've never been there. I find Newcastle very friendly and the people are kind and welcoming. It's very laid back and I just love the vibes of being with Geordies, awesome people. I hope to go there one day and meet some new friends. Greetings and love from Iloilo, Philippines.✨

The stream Lort Burn runs under modern-day Dean Street and Side, which used to be the historical site of the city butchers. They threw the offal into the burn to travel down into the Tyne, the smell was reportedly 'something else'. The Crown Posada was shown, which is one of the oldest surviving pubs in the city (although it was refaced during the Grainger Town renovations), beaten by The Old George at the top of Cloth Market which dates from 1582.

I have just had 4 days in the Toon. Even your 2 videos don't cover the whole of the city. Not shown on your video was the Parish Church near the roundabout described by John Betchamin as the prettiest church in England.
Now on my hit list to return & discover more of this fascinating city. Thank you

by the momument what you asked what this is (25:02), its actule a vent for the metro, but covered in art. also when you looked at the original row of house for eldon square, one of those houses is actutual a vent for the metro, you can see the vent on the roof. Vents disguised in muct the same way the london tube does.

You made reference to the first viable steam turbine-powered vessel, The Turbinia, which is on display in The Discovery Museum (free entry). The shot of Mosley Street shows Collingwood Street in the distance, now just known for nightclubs, but it was named after Lord Admiral Collingwood, whose family house was nearby and who was married in the cathedral at that location, he was second in command at the Battle of Trafalgar and took over command to lead the fleet to victory when Nelson was fatally injured.

In the absence of a reply to your question (I lived in Newcastle for many years) I’d say this was a weekday late evening (in June/July the Sun doesn’t set till almost 10pm). It’s definitely a quiet time of the day. During the middle part of the day those streets would be busier and at weekends VERY busy. Newcastle is certainly a well used bustling city centre with tons of shops, bars and restaurants (the Theatre Royal on Grey Street is Sir Ian Mckellen’s favourite theatre and I saw him play Romeo there way back in 1977 when I was a schoolboy)

In the video I have noticed that the city is quite clean, is it really a clean city? One of the things I don't like about where I live at the moment is the litter and dirty everywhere. I plan to visit this coming summer and will consider moving there in the next few years. I'm fed up with the incivility of some people.
