SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE | The ultimate full Sheffield City Centre tour [Yorkshire England]

  • We visit Sheffield City Centre, South Yorkshire, England for a full tour of the steel city of Sheffield showing all the Sheffield City Centre landmarks and places from Town Hall to City Hall, The Moor, Fargate, Fitzalan Square, West Street, Division Street, Barkers Pool and more.
Sheffield City Centre is a much changing and evolving city centre with lots of building work to update, refurbish, revitalise and improve Sheffield. We take a wander around to see what's happening and what it's like here and look for things to do in Sheffield.
Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England. It is situated in South Yorkshire close to Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham and with a lot to see and do. Sheffield has two universities, Sheffield University itself and Sheffield Hallam University so there are lots of students in the city who tend to stay here after their studies are complete.
The changes happening in the city are huge, particularly around barkers pool, the moor and charter square where the new retail quarter is being constructed, and around Peace Gardens and Pinstone Street where the new hotel is being built right opposite Sheffield Town Hall.
In this Sheffield tour I try and cover as much as possible that you would want to see in Sheffield from the new look Fitzalan Square, down Haymarket and up Angel Street to Sheffield High Street and up to Sheffield Cathedral.
From there we cross over to Fargate and head down Chapel Walk to Tudor Square home of Sheffield theatres including the Crucible, the library theatre and The Lyceum theatre.
From here it's just a short walk through the beautiful winter gardens to the St Paul's place and then The Peace Gardens where we see people relaxing and enjoying the fountains outside the Town Hall.
We then venture down fargate, through Orchard Square shopping centre and up into Leopold Square on Leopold Street where we head through to West Street one of Sheffield's main nightlife streets, especially for students (who love The Cavendish bar!)
Then we head into West One complex of apartments and bars before going down Division Street and Devonshire Green to Barkers Pool and Sheffield City Hall.
Across from City Hall is Cambridge Street so we nip down to see what changes are taking place here and then end up on Pinstone Street, the new look Charter Square, before ending on The Moor after a look inside The Moor indoor markets
This is quite a Sheffield walk and it took me a while to film and edit it but I wanted to show off Sheffield City Centre as best I could for you so I hope you enjoy it.
Sheffield City Centre gets some criticism from Sheffield residents who complain (in their Sheffield accents) about the cycle lanes, lack of shops and other things that visitors and people coming here from other places don't see. Make of that what you will.
Sheffield City Centre is a wide and large one going from Park Square Roundabout and Parkway (that runs from the M1 motorway) round past Sheffield Railway Station and round to Netherthorpe and down to Kelham Island and back round again.

I left Sheffield with my parents 71 years ago and went abroad. I can hardly recognize the city center today. However, I love Sheffield and would love to visit there, if I was a little younger. Great video.

Left the City in 1957 for Australia, I was only a young boy and most of my memories were of a dark , drab, wet and smoke stained landscape. The City looks absolutely wonderful now. I have never been back but often travel around where I was born on Google Earth.

This is wonderful. Grew up in and around Sheffield in the 70s and 80s. I live abroad now and haven't been back to my home city in 10 years. A couple of glass boxes here and there but it's fantastic to see it generally on the up. Thank you so much for doing this.

      It’s not on the up.
      If anything it’s getting worse.
SCC are only interested in taking government cash for allowing all the imports to flock here.
The city centre is a disgrace. Full of cheap shops and Greggs.
Impossible to drive around and park.

I lived in this wonderful city between 2010-2016 and it changed so much even in these 6 years. Most important being the old Castle market ! The new one in Moor lacks in character that the old one exuded in abundance! Plus The new Tesco in Saville street (not so new anymore)
I can see the city centre has changed a bit even from the time I left !

I'm loving this Neil. I've mentioned to you before, but I doubt you'd remember, how we moved from Sheffield in 1962, when I was just short of my 7th birthday. We only moved over the hill to Glossop. 'My Sheffield' is a far cry from the one you show on here and even further from Mum and Dad's. My Sheffield was Redgates, obviously I suppose and then as I got older and we would come over on the train to Victoria or the bus into Pond Street, I loved Suggs. I also remember a great shop on Leopold Street, where I could buy my Subbuteo stuff from. I wonder what my parents and even my grandparents would make of the city now. I often wonder what my life would have been like, had we stayed on Manor Lane. I do think it's a great place.

Nice to see my home city again as I left Sheffield in 2006. Every time I see it on TH-cam it upsets me to see how it's been changed and the shops I knew have long gone. I said one day I would come back to live in Sheffield but I am not so sure now as I don't like change. But thanks gimbal for showing me how it as changed, I had some very happy times way back in the 60s and 70s in the Sheffield I knew, but it's changed that much I don't think I would find my way round the city centre let alone the pubs I use to visit. You do a sterling job with your videos gimbal

I used to go to the classic cinema on fitzalan square when I was a kid. It was next to wigfalls tv shop until they burnt down. Best shop though for me in Sheffield was Redgates, the best toy shop ever. Once a great city but now can’t compete with Manchester and Leeds which are booming in comparison. I’ve got a set of six books which the Sheffield star released titled ‘do you remember Sheffield’ which tell the history of the city and how it grew. I’ve also got a drawing they released of Sheffield as viewed from castle hill (where the Hyde park flats are now) which was originally drawn in 1750 when it was not much more than a small town. It overlooks Fitzalan square.

Wonderful video. I was a student in Sheffield early 1970s and the last time I visited was at least 20 years ago. Astonishing to see how it has changed - for the better. Sad the Hole In The Road is no longer there. It was built 1967 under the Castle Square roundabout. I think there was a fish tank built into one of the walls. It was a meeting place for all and sundry.

I left Oughtibridge in the 60s and occasionally come home from Texas to visit the bank, and see the Owls. The city centre has changed a lot. Recall the cream and blue buses and trams, the two railway stations (Victoria and Midland). When I was very young, I would watch my dad rolling steel by hand at Samuel Osborns in't Wicker (weer twatter flows over't weir). ,

It was a dirty old place back then because we were a steel forging city and the Owls were a good team. I was there when they beat Spurs 2-1 at S-6. We used to go to the fish market on Saturdays and I'd have 4d-worth of whelks while my parents bought fish. We didnt have a fridge back then, and we had only just bought a black and white telly.

Nightlife in Sheffield was great back in the day but sadly gone down hill fast and a violent city like most Towns and cities in UK. Personally I don't not feel safe in towns and cities now due to the idiots that frequent them why cant people just enjoy themselves with making trouble for others this is not just Sheffield but all over

Oh! dear. Am I a miserable old man or do I have an insight on to the reality that I see. I remember Sheffield as a very dirty place.Dirty because of the smoke from the factories. BUT I loved it. The streets were full of people going about their own interests. What the video shows to me is a place without people. The large number of buses and trams don't contain passengers. The streets are vitually empty. What is the point of all these smart buildings? So I'll go back to watching the few old videos of Rotherham and Sheffield to wallow in a time when there were no grooming gangs of child abusers. OK the newspapers were full of police corruption but that corruption was for their own greed not to cover up the grooming gangs whose origins were far from Yorkshire. Who is to blame. I say those nice people I so admired. They were so full of their own lives that they allowed those in control to create an urban desert.

Same as when parents always used to complain about their kids music (and still do)
Just because people get older doesn't mean they should start criticising the city or town
It's just change - and all towns and cities change
      As people get older
Some things are better, some are worse - how's it's always been.
I used to love some things in the old Sheffield City Centre, but I didn't like the risk you took going in the hole in the road at night
Didn't like the skinheads spitting on people from the gallery at the Castle Market
Didnt' like the no-go area of the Peace Gardens
Didn't like how so much of the city centre smelt of pee
      It's just life, change, evolution

Things change my friend. Time passes us by.
The people before me and you were saying the same things you are saying
You are just clinging onto your time growing up and not allowing the younger generations coming through to be proud of their city and enjoying their time growing up as you’re trying to insist that everything should go back to how it was
Could you imagine the hole in the road being put back, or Kelvin Flats with all their problems being rebuilt, or how about the underpasses around the city centre being reinstalled to be an unsafe way of getting from a to b?
Sometimes you have to just accept that many views from older generations like you and I can be very rose tinted
Visitors to Sheffield LOVE the city these days
My children are proud of it and appreciate the improvements and recent changes.
People buy online these days so the days of Sheffield being a busy retail hub are over and the city must evolve into something else where more people move into and live in the city centre and enjoy more leisure things there like concerts and coffee shops (like the 50s and 60s)
I can accept your opinion that you personally preferred the old Sheffield - that’s fine
But the old Sheffield simply couldn’t operate successfully in the modern world
