Here's your actual, non-mob mentality answer. He had to follow that rule because he agreed to that rule when he bought the tickets. It's in the fine print, and is almost universal in the Airlines industry. It allows for each individual ticket to be a bit cheaper for the consumer in the end.... but you get confrontations like the one in this video which obviously means it's not worth it. Hopefully laws get passed soon to ban overbooking, but if that happens it will directly reflect in ticket prices too.

Lol. As a veteran myself i say open it for everyone. Being a veteran doesnt mean your better than wveryone like some veterans think. Just ask what they did in the military and their discharge type and code and theyll say they were like human resource, mechanic, etc. Or they got a bad conduct. Wasn’t their call to make, they were dispatched by their superiors to respond to a “belligerent” passenger, they asked him to vacate he refused and action was taken to remove him… it doesn’t make it right, but as the victim said they were doing their jobs, and the officers only know the orders they’re given in a moments notice. NO. You do not forcibly remove a paying passenger, who is not making trouble, from a plane. You make an announcement that asks passengers to volunteer to give up their seats for a voucher.

The airline didn't do anything any that other airline doesn't do, and the doctor assaulted a law enforcement officer to get on property he had no rights to after his ticket was cancelled. The easiest way to get people off a plane when over booked is to offer enough money to get some one to switch. Just keep raising the offer until enough take it. I would take it for $1000. Much cheaper than $5M settlement and several billion$ loss from bad PR.

The security were not just doing their job. It's not their job to beat somebody up. I feel so bad for this guy. He seems like such a gentle soul with a kind heart. but is it their job or not? security guard is such a vague description and can vary greatly from one job to the next. for example: the guys that protect the president could conceivably be called "security guards", but because of where they are employed people naturally assume they could and would shoot you if you threatened/attacked the object they were securing (the president). I also consider airport security on a higher level than that of say a mall security guard. It really all depends upon their training and their employers. Clearly in this instance their training sucked. As did their employers as proven by the presidents real sentiments disclosed in that email. EDIT: nowhere in the story did it say that he was beaten up. It just stated that he received those injuries, which he probably got just from banging into stuff while being dragged - not by a direct assault. I know - it's a fine line, but probably not so fine in legal terms. ;)

I didn‘t even get a refund, because the travel agency and the flight company were arguing about who has to pay. I had to pay for another flight on my own and lost precious time on vacation, because of the company‘s stupid mistakes. They don‘t even care about their passengers. So sad!

United would codeshare with Lufthansa, you cant know when buying tickets long time in advance, and you cant boycott all airlines to be safe. Im not a fan of codeshares and was annoyed once when i had to take a British Airways long haul flight, but was pleasantly surprised when they were several notches better than the airline i had booked.

No. What happens is, they give you a seat on another plane that goes to the same location (country) in a couple of hours. But he mightve been in a rush to reach his destination ASAP. Its not like they were gonna charge him and not give him a seat on another plane.
Strangely enough its only like that in North America. Im from England and Ive been an airport manager for many years and Ive worked all over the world including China, South Africa, India and Columbia. When ever there is an issue where security get involved they will handle it with words 99% of the time and only use violence as a last resort. However in the USA it seems to be the first thing the security do, they like to use force. Its like all of the security guards are a bunch of angry guys. Its like that in Canada as well but they're not as abrupt as the Americans.

They oversell all the time BUT ask for volunteers to give up seats for a compensation and speedy rebooking. I got paid well to give up mine once and was only 3 hours delayed, i was not in a hurry and noone who was in a hurry had to stay behind. There are peaceful solutions, and overbooking gives us cheaper tickets.

The seats were all taken and now they decided to bump a paying customer to give up his seat, he already told them that he had to be on that flight to go to work but the airlines refused to listen to him, why didn't the Airlines just increase the amount of money to someone give up their seat.

The police did not beat him but they allowed his face to go full force into the armrest across from his seat is what happened. Because, 3 police officers NOT security, thought a better option of instead of properly removing someone from their seat was to rip and pull an elderly man by his arms out of his seat sideways over his wife's armrest and her seat since he was seated by the window. It also looked like they didn't unbuckle him either when they were using too much force. When he got pulled out they let go of him and he went flying into the opposite armrest. Where another officer was standing beside the armrest did not protect the passenger at all. He could have helped catch him or even put an arm out to prevent his face from smashing into the seat. Then they proceeded to drag him out by his arms by 1 officer only with his feet dragging on floor. While the other officers walked behind the Dr instead of helping carry him by his feet after being badly injured he could have hurt his neck too luckly he didnt. He was wearing glasses too and they allowed his broken glasses all bent and out of place on his face instead of putting back on or carry them for him or even give them to his wife to hold on to. They did not tend to his injuries either couldn't even give him anything to clean himself off or to stop the bleeding he had blood dripping all over him. The flight attendants could have given him sum first aid as well but didn't. I just feel for anyone mistreated by any airline company especially bad mouthing a paying customer on top of that afterwards.

Wasn’t their call to make, they were dispatched by their superiors to respond to a “belligerent” passenger, they asked him to vacate he refused and action was taken to remove him… it doesn’t make it right, but as the victim said they were doing their jobs, and the officers only know the orders they’re given in a moments notice. The airline didn't do anything any that other airline doesn't do, and the doctor assaulted a law enforcement officer to get on property he had no rights to after his ticket was cancelled. but is it their job or not? security guard is such a vague description and can vary greatly from one job to the next. for example: the guys that protect the president could conceivably be called "security guards", but because of where they are employed people naturally assume they could and would shoot you if you threatened/attacked the object they were securing (the president). I also consider airport security on a higher level than that of say a mall security guard. It really all depends upon their training and their employers. Clearly in this instance their training sucked. As did their employers as proven by the presidents real sentiments disclosed in that email.
EDIT: nowhere in the story did it say that he was beaten up. It just stated that he received those injuries, which he probably got just from banging into stuff while being dragged - not by a direct assault. I know - it's a fine line, but probably not so fine in legal terms. ;)

People will miss funerals, medical appointments that can be life altering or life ending, people don’t get to say goodbye to loved ones who are dying because the stupid airlines just don’t care. How about they fill the plane 95% and the other 5% of seats can be sold as standby plus another 10 standby tickets. They can use the 5% for employees if needed. It really makes me mad that I have to pay half a months worth of salary to fly and I’m not guaranteed a seat on the plane.

Strangely enough its only like that in North America. Im from England and Ive been an airport manager for many years and Ive worked all over the world including China, South Africa, India and Columbia. When ever there is an issue where security get involved they will handle it with words 99% of the time and only use violence as a last resort. However in the USA it seems to be the first thing the security do, they like to use force. Its like all of the security guards are a bunch of angry guys. Its like that in Canada as well but they're not as abrupt as the Americans.

I remember the story of that poor dog being put in the bag compartment, or that autism girl getting kicked out of the plane. This is why you shouldn’t overbook flights.
Airlines need to stop "over selling" their seats, and these kind of things wouldn't happen.
They oversell all the time BUT ask for volunteers to give up seats for a compensation and speedy rebooking. I got paid well to give up mine once and was only 3 hours delayed, i was not in a hurry and noone who was in a hurry had to stay behind. There are peaceful solutions, and overbooking gives us cheaper tickets.

The seats were all taken and now they decided to bump a paying customer to give up his seat, he already told them that he had to be on that flight to go to work but the airlines refused to listen to him, why didn't the Airlines just increase the amount of money to someone give up their seat.

The police did not beat him but they allowed his face to go full force into the armrest across from his seat is what happened. Because, 3 police officers NOT security, thought a better option of instead of properly removing someone from their seat was to rip and pull an elderly man by his arms out of his seat sideways over his wife's armrest and her seat since he was seated by the window. It also looked like they didn't unbuckle him either when they were using too much force. When he got pulled out they let go of him and he went flying into the opposite armrest. Where another officer was standing beside the armrest did not protect the passenger at all. He could have helped catch him or even put an arm out to prevent his face from smashing into the seat. Then they proceeded to drag him out by his arms by 1 officer only with his feet dragging on floor. While the other officers walked behind the Dr instead of helping carry him by his feet after being badly injured he could have hurt his neck too luckly he didnt. He was wearing glasses too and they allowed his broken glasses all bent and out of place on his face instead of putting back on or carry them for him or even give them to his wife to hold on to. They did not tend to his injuries either couldn't even give him anything to clean himself off or to stop the bleeding he had blood dripping all over him. The flight attendants could have given him sum first aid as well but didn't. I just feel for anyone mistreated by any airline company especially bad mouthing a paying customer on top of that afterwards.
