Meredith Jenkins honestly United Airlines is the real loser here. Between diverting, landing, taxing, and taking off again to their destination they probably cost them selves 5-15 grand worth of jet fuel.

People with autism are prone to violent meltdowns, which, in a small, compacted space such as an airplane, can be disastrous. A screaming baby does not have the capacity to be violent.

@@toastyegg391 But then all of a sudden she had money to pay for the first class meal? Doesn't she get like financial aid for having a handicapped child? How many cases of autistic people you hear on planes that make scenes??? Very little to ZERO. Cause those people get prepared, don't take fucking planes which are much more likely to scare people or the pilot, they could use cars, trains, etc. But no they wanted to use a plane. So they took a gamble and were wrong. It sucks that they had to get off and sucks MORE FOR THE PEOPLE INVOLVED, since they had no part in it and they lost time also I assume. We don't even fucking talk about the other passengers, who blame the airline but should blame the family.
So because they knew this shit could happen, didn't have a hot meal prepared, or had the option to buy it (some airlines provide hot meals even in non first class as far as I know) they caused this to happen, ruined the flight for everyone else AND THEN THEY SUE? Like fuck off. Take the loss, apologize to the people and company, next time prepare better.
This sounds so stupid from my point of view it wouldn't amaze me if the family didn't plan this to make free money for life by suing a huge company. And don't tell me people don't want free unearned money, don't be naive.
I hope AA would just issue a rule about this crap so in the future they can't get sued, or not allow autistic people WITH SERIOUS REACTIONS, on planes.

I was on 30 day Princess Cruise that covered most of Asia and I noticed a woman and her autistic child in the dining room. Her child was VERY loud and it bothered all of the people eating. I have some experience with autistic children so I made a very bad decision and walked over and asked the woman if I could help in some way. Normally that would be welcome but the woman flew into a rage and said there was "nothing wrong and to mind my own business", so I did. I noticed them several more times in that first week, always with the child screaming at the top of his lungs. Long story short, a couple days later I was sitting on my balcony and i noticed a scuffle on the gangplank between a woman and security personnel. It turned out to be the woman kicking and screaming as she and her child were physically thrown off the ship. One wonders if this woman on the plane even bothered to mention to the attendants or the boarding staff that she had an autistic child who might have behavior issues on the flight. Many of these mothers insist that their child is "normal" This is not true. They need special care and treatment and these women sometimes refuse to accept that..

She really shouldn't have to announce such a thing, as if a child is radioactive and everyone needs to banish them. Human empathy is why we survived as a species, to help each other out. Stop being an evolutionary dead end and learn to treat disabled people with empathy

    • @AA-iy4gm
      @AA-iy4gm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

no, nothing to do with empathy, the child is disabled and needs special care which regular people don't know how to do as they aren't specialized in it AND they also deserve peace on their vacation, where is the empathy for them if they worked themselves so hard for a whole year or more just to have a vacation and then they have to endure a continuously screaming child? Screaming just like yelling or barking causes a physical stressful reaction in people and they have the right to say that that's not okay, if you're okay with it then go forth and volunteer to be in those unpleasant situations but don't bully others into it by attempting to make out as if its something to do with their empathy.

There is SO much more to this story. Her daughter's condition did NOT pop uo an hour BEFORE the flight, but since she was 3 yrs old. The daughter was screaming, & hittind airline personnel, while the father was caught saying "There's gonna be a lawsuit, & we WILL win." I saw the original tape, & the mother was such a demanding BLANK. When they were put off the plane, the ENTIRE plane ERUPTED in applace. Why don't parents who KNOW something like this may happen, contact the airline beforehand in order to PREVENT things from happening? If the mother knows that the daughter gets unruly if she doesn't have a warm meal, then why didn't she contact the airline before the flight and arrange for one? I'm sure things would have gone very differently. Too many times people automatically side with the parent but this parent could have done better.

But whatever we do, sometimes stuff just happens. So you can guess how jittery we were when we were flying home from Tokyo to Budapest (via Moscow), because we had heard stories like the one in the video. She doesn’t have a meltdown because of her behavior, she has one because the change in environment is overwhelming for her. Autism affects our behavior but it doesn’t mean our behavior is bad. It is the families fault though, never in the report did they mention her telling the crew or Airline that her daughter had Autism. To them it looks like a child throwing a tantrum about not getting hot food. It caused a disturbance among other passengers and was also impairing the pilots ability to have the confidence to know with 100% certainty that they would be same if she continued which in turn impaired his ability to land safely at their final destination. I do wish them love, happiness, and well being especially for their daughter as I also work with and provide for people suffering from Autism as well but this could have been avoided if they had warned the airline up front. Even if they did say that they did inform them I guarantee you that the people working on that flight have too big of a heart not to care for her if they knew that she did have Autism and needed the help she required by receiving a VIP hot meal.

Flight attendant of 17 years here. I don’t work for United but I know for a fact, NONE of the US domestic carriers are allotted extra “hot food” to offer non-1st class/business class passengers on flights. If we have 16 1st class passengers, we are provided 16 1st class meals. That’s it. No exceptions. And every single passenger eats their food because they not only prepaid for it, they also preordered their exact meal, days or weeks ahead of time. We are not at liberty to declare to a paying 1st class passenger, “Sorry. There’s a family demanding your meal for their daughter so, tough luck.” We also aren’t a magical restaurant. We can’t just make food appear at 30,000ft. We only have what we are catered on the ground. There’s literally nothing we can do, which is exactly what they would have explained to the mother. I’m willing to bet my retirement the food that ended up being provided was from a flight attendant’s own personal packed lunch cooler from her home, which is technically not allowed by any airline and FAA policy. She could have lost her job for doing a good deed and giving away her own dinner but clearly, the complaints and behavior escalated.
What would this family have done had they been on Southwest? They don’t offer any meals on their flights because their exclusively B-737 retrofitted fleet is not equipped with ovens, 1st class, or the required galley space in order to do so.
Furthermore, airlines don’t just divert for a mild inconvenience such as a teenager making quiet moaning sounds as the parent is claiming. It costs A LOT of money and the pilots and flight attendants are often the ones who take the brunt of the blame and have to submit tons of paperwork to make sure they aren’t issued disciplinary repercussions.
I’d like to see the other side of this story because there seems to be way too many holes in it.

Yup, I thought the same thing. It really sucks that her kid has autism and was having a meltdown, but she knew before boarding that she wasnt provided a meal with her seat. She's saying she "needs a little support" for her special needs child, well waiting until your at cruising altitude before asking is stupid on her part. Absolutely no one was prepared or even able to help at that point, and that's 100% her fault. I also try to be patient with crying kids or anyone with a disability like this, but she probably wasn't "just" making noises. She was probably becoming aggressive for the pilot to have made the decision to make an emergency landing. They don't land for someone irritating other passengers- but they do if there is someone being unruly or violent. And child or not, autistic or not, I'd be willing to bet money that she was bordering on violent.

Maybe the solution is to fly first class.
Also...maybe each plane could have just 2-3 extra hot meals available for unusual situations like this one. Cost could be covered by selling it to the family at double the normal cost. Profits could be split among the crew.

Just to be realistic on the matter, it seems like nobody is talking about the other perspective. She is a mother of an autistic child, meaning, she needs to be extra aware of how to plan ahead for her child that needs special care. So, in this case, if she needs warm meals, then as she was booking the flight, it was her responsibility to find out whether the economy class for that specific flight offers warm meals or not. If not, she could have booked business class instead. (I guess if she was willing to pay for the warm meal, she would probably also afford first class anyway). Or if not that, just call the airline either way in advance to ask if there is any way to prepare a warm meal in the plane ahead. She could have also got special aluminium boxes to keep meals warm for a longer time. My point is, it is mainly the mother's responsibility to plan ahead, plus, the flight attendant has to follow protocol. If he made an exception, he would not only break the rules, but that may also cause more people to think they can take advantage of that.

The fact the parents explained just baffles me more.
Autism is a diagnosed medical condition that covers a massive spectrum, if your job involves interacting with members of the public then - sorry - you will interact with autistic people on occasion. He doesn't know how to deal with kids shutting down and treats them like they are idiots for being overwhelmed. Singled out the black kid in my class and made some passive aggressive statements about homosexuality. He thinks that ppl with depression shouldn't take meds and should just "deal with it" . I can't stand him and don't know what to do.
I feel like this family getting kicked off the flight is ridiculous and the world needs to know that a kid with autism having a meltdown isn't scary or threatening. The child is in distress and overwhelmed. She should have been treated according. Not treated like she was holding everyone on the flight hostage.

He was taught that and not in a good way. Maybe he shouldn’t have chosen a job that requires him to work with people. He either genuinely thinks he’s doing good, is doing it for the money, or just does it for the fun of it and really is a sick creature who gets off on being able to control others. I don’t know him so I can’t say. However, I’ll say you’re just as “bad” as him considering how you easily judge him, the same way he does to other people. Sure, people are becoming more educated but that does not mean everyone are as open or understanding as you have shown. People had to be tough, you know. Outside society, the world really is kill or be killed. Living in society really is a privilege that so many people had to fight and die for it to become the way it is today. It might not be perfect, but then again what is? We’re really all just trying to live a good life with the cards we were dealt with.

Just today, I'm at work, walk to the front and find an autism older adult just sitting in our motorized carts. Drink in his hands and staring blankly at nothing. I walk up, smile and Hi. He looks at me, smiles and says Hi. I ask him if he's OK. He says Yeah. His replies to me are very sluggish and slurred mind you. Knowing someone had told him to sit there and wait, I feel bad for him. And having worked with autism kids before, I asked if he wanted a magazine. He says Yeah. He's right in front of the magazine rack, so I'm trying to find one he likes, but he can't vocally tell me. So I start guessing. We have lots of gun magazines, but I didn't want him looking at guns. So I'm still guessing and he's still nodding No. I finally find a truck magazine that he wants. But now he can't hold the magazine. He wants to hold his cup, but also wants to look at the magazine. He's finally persuaded to put his drink in the basket but is still not wanting to hold the magazine. So I have to show him how to hold it. I give it back, and tell him to be careful and don't tear it. He bends it and my brain is screaming (it's not paid for). But I wait and he stops. He finally settles down with it on his lap. I flip a couple pages for him and a customer had walked in. Seeing him with the magazine, she tells she'll pay for it. And she does. The thing is, people aren't supposed to be sitting around in the motorized carts cause they're for people who need to use them, and you ARE NOT allowed to read magazines before purchasing. But it's not the end of the world to make one exception.

kenicke579 When you work with autistic people, you can tell. Even some people with extreme case of HADD are like looking after an autistic person, but on a different level. I know what ADD and HADD looks like and met a mom who was trying to control her son. Again, it was at work, I had a stock cart and he had to use the restroom. He bolted for the back room then bolted out, then latched onto my stock cart and started pulling. His gaze was going every where and was touching everything. A brain like that is on hyper drive and you gotta keep up with it %100. No slacking. When you work with special needs you know what it looks like, how to help them and how to make the experience pleasant for everyone around the special needs person who isn't used to that type of activity. And each one really are special. They all are unique.

You get what you pay for. On long haul flights food is included but that is so many hours. In the uk i mean. If a flight is 4 hours a passenger won't get food included and will have to pay extra. Airlines are alot cheaper now.

Poor woman you could see the pain in her eyes bc of the way her daughter is treaded. Also I have so much respect for the guy who recorded it.

First of all that's not the airline's faults that you don't know how to control your kid. My brother has autism and he cannot talk. And he is known to having tantrum sometimes but there are medicines to calm him down and also sleeping medicine for a flight. That is a airplane not a hotel things work differently. Be more prepared. Know your child and always have ready. And always put in requests before the flight.
