    The amount of adult men who think women can control their periods is insane. I once bled through and a guy asked me why I didn’t just wait to go to the bathroom to have my period. It’s not like pee I can’t control when it comes out. Need to teach better biology in schools.

    • @NaliaDanger

      Yeah seriously. Life would be so much easier if I could control when I bleed. Also, if I had the choice, I definitely NEVER would have had my period at school. Ever.

      @@lofiraven3654 I cant speak for all women as some know a lot, some dont know anything, same with guys, some know a lot and some dont know anything. But in my experience GENERALLY most men and women dont know much about other gender.
      and about theirs as well, there are many misconceptions people have about their own gender as well. The scale might be slight tilted towards guys knowing less about women based on the fact that your reproductive system is much more complex than ours, but I dont think it is significant and also I think most women dont get good enough education about their own reproductive system as well. but again, point is that it should be improved for both

      Plus, if you don't know your blood type, the Red Cross tells you for free after you donate. And if you're lucky enough to be CMV negative(it's a virus that's dangerous for babies), you get put into a special rewards points catrgory where you can get gift cards and merch. They're pretty desperate for CMV negative blood because it's safe enough to give to premature babies.
      Blood donation is great, and if you're eligible I super recommend it.

That means you carry the genes for an autoimmune immune system but your immune system is triggered by (typically) a viral/bacterial infection your immune system struggles with (although some triggers can be stress or trauma). Your immune system then misidentifies a body part as a foreign body and attacks it. In type 1 diabetics, it’s the pancreas but there are hundreds of other autoimmune conditions. Once you have one, it is very likely to get others at a future point in your life. You can also get type 1 diabetes at any age. You just need a trigger.

      Ever since I can remember, I've always been (1) super sensitive about sensory things like wetness, (2) OCD about toilet-related cleanliness, and (3) naturally use more toilet paper than is probably necessary, probably because of (1) & (2). Does it mean more flushing? Yes, but in my obsessive brain, it's the only way to be. If I feel any hint of moisture on my hands after wiping, I definitely wash them--but most of the time, I simply don't need to.

      There's a little bit of nuance to this question (but not much). The short version is that if I call myself Dr. Mallon, that in itself is not criminal. If I self identify as a doctor in the context of giving you medical advice (especially if I am offering medical services or trying to persuade people to do things by saying "trust me, I am a doctor"), that's a different story.
      In the case of this Internet health guru, it sounds like she is a chiropractor, or was at one point, and it is common for those in that line of work to call themselves doctors (at least in the US).
      I would say that if she gave someone some kind of actionable medical advice (like if she said drinking mercury cures asthma or something and one of her Twitter followers died as a result) there could definitely be a case there. But probably the first thing her attorneys would argue is that she doesn't have a medical degree and never claimed to have one.

    Talking about Adderall and not taking it... When I was young (in the 80s), I was on Ritalin for ADHD. I found it worked remarkably well and I was actually able to focus on things in school. During the summer, my mother decided she was going to take me off Ritalin because she was worried it would stunt my growth. That was the worst summer I ever had and it took me years to forgive my mother for doing that to me. I didn't know how to express my feelings so I just told her "I feel jumpy". What I was trying to say is, "my body doesn't feel like I'm the one controlling it and my muscles are constantly twitching". My mother finally took me to the doctor about 3/4 through summer and he told her, "that was not a good idea" (about taking me off Ritalin). The rest of my summer was rather nice!
    Parents, if your child is diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, get a second opinion. If the diagnosis persists, please don't arbitrarily take your child off....well, ANY medication without consulting their doctor.

      First off, adderall is additive. And so if you go off of it cold turkey, you will suffer from withdrawal symptoms. If you look up the medication on WebMD or other sources, it very clearly says that. So, you definitely should work with your doctor on these things as you say. But at the same time, you shouldn't blindly take medications just because your doctor recommends it either. It's important to hear what the doctor says and then do your own research on the subject. Then with that information in hand, you are in a position to consider the benefits and risks involved with taking the medication. Doctors make mistakes, and they over prescribe medications. So, patients really need to educate themselves and to advocate for themselves to get the best possible health care. In my case, I was diagnosed with ADD along with autism when I was about 44 years old. I had been managing my condition for decades without the use of medication. So, why would I take a potentially dangerous drug now? It made no sense at all. Elon has Asperger's and may also have ADD like I do. It's pretty common for Aspies. But when you combine the neurological differences associated with Asperger's and ADD, there is no way for me to know how close my situation is with other people with ADD or ADHD. Or how easy or difficult it might be to control it without medication. I would just advise people to exercise caution whenever dealing a drug with potentially dangerous side effects.

      It's so incredibly baffling how people from the outside will just assume that you don't need certain treatments just because you "seem fine", especially when the treatment is doing its job. Sometimes I'll have people be like "are you sure you have anxiety? You don't /seem/ anxious." Like for one, considering I've probably had anxiety for most of my life and it was misdiagnosed as autism (due to anti-social tendencies I picked up as a result) before being deemed that I was "just quirky", yeaaah I don't believe for a moment I "seem anxious" to anyone. Two, of course I don't seem anxious, the medicine I take is doing what it's supposed to do to reduce my anxiety to begin with.
      It's like seeing someone with glasses and saying "you don't seem visually impaired to me" in response to how they're maneuvering the world while wearing their glasses.

    A medic recommend tasting pee to me when I was in the military... yeah he was a bit of a weirdo. There is a small tiny bit of truth in that in the past tasting pee was a way to check for diabetes, but now we have superior diagnostic tools than "idk tastes kinda sweet".

    • @TerryProthero
      @TerryProthero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      If it's alright with you, I'll just poke my finger and use my digital meter. First, I'm pretty certain it's going to be more accurate. Second, I don't need to taste pee. I see that as a winning situation across the board. But in all seriousness, I think there is a small bit of truth to this. The problem being that you probably wouldn't taste anything in their urine until they had ridiculously high sugar levels. You would want to catch things long before that. And worse still, that doesn't help you with low blood sugar levels. Which are even more dangerous than high blood sugar levels. And on top of all those problems, it takes time for urine to form and be excreted. A blood test will tell what is happening right now rather than being an average of what has been happening over the last several hours.

      In that case, you have a serious problem. Because of the reasons I stated. There might be a tiny grain of truth to the idea of tasting the urine. But in the vast majority of cases, it wouldn't help at all. Probably only in the case of someone having extremely high sugar levels. And even then, it's not a precise enough test to allow you to properly treat the person. All you would know is that they are diabetic. It wouldn't tell you how much medication to give them. That's kind of important if you don't want to kill them. So, not really very helpful. You just tasted pee for nothing. Also, what diabetic would have modern medicine for it and not have proper testing equipment? Literally none. Diabetics always have both with them. If they didn't have one, they wouldn't have the other. So, now you tasted pee, found out they are diabetic, and have nothing to treat them with. Again, not very helpful.

    Personal story time: I was on Adderall for 18 years for ADHD since I was about 5 or 6. I had to stop taking it because I was going overseas to a country where it was outlawed. Adderall withdrawal is a HORRIBLE THING to go through. HORRIBLE. I was even judged by the nurses at my doctor's offices trying to get the Adderall refills when I was still on it, saying "you're too old for this medicine" like ADHD just goes away on its own. Today I'm on a medicine called Straterra and it works a lot better. It's a lot less stimulating than Adderall but it gets the job done.

I had a similar struggle, I tried to get my diagnosis at age 19, after observing multiple classmates who also had adhd and reading up on it. I brought my school reports from my elementary school to my therapist at the time and asked them to look at it and reconsider the autism diagnosis they gave me, because there were no indications for autism to be found in the teachers’ notes, rather strong evidence for me having adhd instead (two psychiatrists confirmed this for me). But they refused to look at it because they were so convinced that I was on the spectrum solely based on the fact that I played online games with childhood friends as a way to hang out with them because my parents were super strict at the time and only let me out to either go to therapy or to school. And also because adhd is exclusively a little boy disease 🤪

    As someone with adhd I appreciate the defense of Adderall. Every medicine has potential side effects and can even rarely lead to severe unprecedented reactions. But that doesn't mean those medicines are bad for everyone, and fear mongering only makes the issue worse. It's important that people are aware of the potential side effects and symptoms of severe reactions so they can keep an eye out and make an informed choice on whats best for them. I started taking Strattera (atomoxetine) for my adhd and had such a bad reaction I ended up in the ER, now I take Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) and it works really well for me. Let me clear that up for you. Type 1 diabetes is when your body doesn't produce insulin. Or so little that it might as well be producing none. This is caused by damage to the pancreas from an accident, injury, an autoimmune problem, etc. Type 2 diabetes is a form of diabetes where your body produces a respectable amount of insulin but not quite enough. This is most often the result of insulin resistance. This is a situation where your body doesn't use insulin as efficiently as a normal person. Some thin people have type 2 diabetes, but it's far more common in obese people later in life. Let's say 40+ years in age. For this reason, people with type 1 diabetes always need to be on medication whereas that may or may not be the case with type 2 diabetes. Mostly because type 2 diabetes often responds well to losing weight and improvements to a person's diet. In my case, for instance, I can keep mine under control with my diet. And if I were to lose enough weight, my numbers might return to normal levels. So far I have seen an improvement by just losing 20 or 30 pounds. I have about 100 more to go. And keep in mind that I'm a pretty mild case even with being 51 and morbidly obese. Basically, type 2 diabetes tends to be less serious of a condition and is more easily treatable. But if left untreated, it can get ugly as well. As in going blind and body parts turning gangrene and needing to be amputated kind of ugly.

    • @TerryProthero
      @TerryProthero 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that there are a lot of people who don't know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can be treated by losing weight and/or changes in diet. When my AIC got to 6.9, my doctor insisted on putting me on diabetic medication. I told him no. And then over the next few months I changed my diet and lost about 20 pounds. With no medication, my AIC dropped to 6.2. Then over the next few months it dropped to 6.0. I later found that the AIC goal for a diabetic as anything under 7.0. So he should never have been pushing medication on me in the first place. It takes work, but my sugar levels are extremely well controlled just with diet. Better, in fact, than what would be possible with medication.

    "Just eat better and exercise. Yoy shouldnt need medication forever" (prediagnoses. My 1st psych tried so many variations of antidepressants instead of looking if anything else was wrong)

I didn’t take any sex education classes. I am only knowledgeable because my household had more females than males. I saw tampons and pads a lot growing up, just seeing them under the sink or in the trash. My parents had trouble explaining it, but my older sisters didn’t hold back.
    However, these men who believe that women can choose the exact moment they have a period never learned growing up. It ain’t their fault. Blame the schools for not teaching them, blame the mom/parents for not teaching them, and/or blame the fact that topics on periods and feminine products such as tampons and pads are considered taboo, especially when trying to explain it to men.

    I'm vitamin D deficient and a lot of people just tell me to go outside more.... I could be outside nearly all day (Like I was at my old job) and my levels never changed. I was told to take vitamin D every single day and now I'm a lot better
    Edit: I also burn easily and sunscreen has never worked for me, I have a mostly irish heritage so that makes sense

    I used to have severe anger issues as a kid, which was a result of undiagnosed ADHD and a lot of other stuff in combo. After I got prescribed Adderal, I actually calmed down a lot because my ADHD was one less problem to worry about and I could focus on coping etc.

    I can’t begin to describe the feelings I have gone through with my ADHD diagnosis…I wish more doctors spoke out about ADHD. I personally do believe there is a over abundance of prescription medication but knowing what untreated adhd can do to someone’s life is just as important… on top of the personal emotional process that comes with the diagnosis I’m also fighting a stigma that is much bigger than the sigma was around depression and anxiety and it’s not even a mental Illness. Hopefully there’s more awareness. It maybe one of the most talked about but it’s definitely the least understood.

    Doctor Mike you're amazing thank you I have type 1 diabetes and it's a pet peeves of mine when people say "diabetes this diabetes that." If you don't understand it please don't make blanket statements about any form of diabetes. You can be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes even from not eating enough. Yes please ask questions if you're interested and learn but no if you don't have diabetes please don't perpetuate stereotypes. But thank you Doctor Mike for explaining the difference, I love this and all the awareness it brings. These are very complicated diseases, like anything else, there's so much nuance.

    When I was a kid, I got an extremely serious sunburn across my shoulders- my nan took me to the beach and fell asleep, and being a kid, I didn't bother with sunscreen without supervision. Basically my entire upper back and shoulders turned into one huge blister, and despite being a fairly hairy guy, to this day no hair grows there- as well the skin there is highly freckled and pale compared to the rest of my skin.
    I make sure to get a skin exam every couple of years now I'm older, and always wear a shirt and sunscreen these days.
