Happy Halloween! Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker, filmmaker Alan Seawright, and returning guest Rebecca Parham of @LetMeExplainStudios are celebrating spooky season by reacting to Corpse Bride. They’re talking about the psychology of heartbreak, mostly from Emily’s perspective, and how she navigates loss. Jonathan talks about Victor’s journey of heartbreak and reconciliation and how Victor, and all of us, can learn to heal. Alan and Rebecca discuss the beautiful melancholy of Corpse Bride’s design, and Rebecca shares why this is the ultimate Tim Burton movie. She also explains the magic of facial animation. It is very common with the death is that they either don't know they are dead or sometimes they misinterpret the reason why they stay behind or their purpose in finding the path to cross over, just like Emily who thinks that the reason why she has to return from beyond the grave was to find a new husband when she forgets that the marriage will remain unbound because she is dead and her husband is alive(This is more than just about the fact that she loves the idea of Victor Van Dort) when the real reason for her reanimation is to save another bride from suffering the same fate as she did and to also be resolved for her vengeance in favor for the wrong that was committed upon herself as well.
I actually appreciated that they made Victoria likable, and not bratty and demanding, as most fiancées are depicted in movies. I like to think that if Victor and Victoria had a daughter, they'd have named her Emily, and she'd have a fascination with butterflies.

Speaking of the nurse, she is one of the three people besides victor, victoria, and emily that is still at the church by the end of the movie (not counting emily's worm). Considering that there are some implications that emily is from victoria's family, those three elderly people might be those still living who remembers and mourns emily. It's my personal headcanon.

I used to want Victor to end up with Emily instead of Victoria, but then everyone involved would have been miserable. Victor would have to die to be with Emily, she'd have felt guilty for forcing him away from everyone he knew, and Victoria would have been trapped in an unhappy marriage with Barkis, who likely would have eventually killed her.
And it wouldn’t have solved her problems either. She’d still have that unresolved hole in her heart and no closure for the horrible thing that Barkis did to her.
And with Victor not being in love with her, eternity together would have been miserable for both of them.

All things considered, things had to happen the way it did for poetic justice and resolving bad karma.
And emily moving on, finding peace allows her to give the true spiritual blessing needed for victoria and victor's union (there are implications that emily is from victoria's family, so she'd be "family" blessing the marriage); her tossing the bouquet is not just her acting what she would have done in life and letting go, it's also passing down all the items needed for a marriage; something old, something borrowed, something blue; emily's old blue bouquet is just that.
Something I love is that when Emily shows up, Victoria BELIEVES Victor. They have a relationship of trust.
Precisely! I believe that Victor and Victoria's almost immediate trust of one another stems from a place of true camaraderie, companionship and loyalty as they are presumably the first friends that they have ever had, apart from Hildegard and Mayhew, respectively; given that they both came from highly sheltered household environments in which they were never truly presented with the opportunity to interact with other individuals who fostered their unique artistic interests and encouraged them to pursue them fully. Although there is also the element of gender expectations involved (given that Victor himself posessed a significant academic, socioeconomic and artistic leverage that Victoria could never had access to because of the decadent state of her family's legacy and wealth in society), I find it very interesting that even though Victor and Victoria are kindred spirits, their challenges present numerous differences and similarities that are worth noting. Victor for instance, did have the societal permissivity to pursue his flourishing interests in butterfly entomology, botanical and environmental illustration and music in great part because of his gender, but he was never truly provided with the necessary emotional and financial support to pursue these interests to their fullest extent, because of his codependent relationship with his parents (more specifically Mrs. Van Dort) who is described by Victor as having been very dissaproving and even in the original script, it is also described that Victor's social anxiety was caused because of his toxic relationship with his mother and his father's passivity to her agression; however he is entirely the opposite of his family, an incredibly doting, highly intelligent and observant young man who shows true devotion to those he cares for and his identity is not defined by money or traditional masculine stereotypes. Victoria however is incredibly passionate and fond of music, literature and even in certain parts of the story, highly inquisitive in her spirituality. She is also profoundly determined, caring and a highly intelligent strategist and resourceful young woman, even going as far as to risk her own emotional and physical safety in her abusive household and being accused of the so-called "Female Hysteria" by her family because she confronted the Pastor and was dilligent and proactive in helping Victor even beyond her own means and even if it meant finding a supernatural solution to his predicament with Emily. Their relationship is this impassioned because they are devoted to the goal of creating a home in which their partner can find safety and the freedom to express themselves and their identities without reproach, something that they ultimately find in each other.
I am so tired of the hatred toward Victoria when she didn’t even do anything wrong. Like she’s a victim of neglect and abuse from her family and was sold off like chattel for them not to end up in the poor house not once but twice. And thankfully things worked out and she and Victor ended up developing a real love between them but if she hadn’t been so lucky? Probably would have been worse for her. But she literally does nothing wrong over the entire runtime.
I know a lot of people like Emily and I do too, but she is the one in the wrong here for kidnapping Victor and forcing him to be attached to her when he’s engaged to someone else. Which is something that she realizes toward the end of the movie in her selfless act of letting him go.
I think the problem a lot of people have with Victoria is that they have no concept of the era the movie is set in. It's frustrating since she really is a victim of her time and actually a good character.
I honestly can't hate either of them. They're BOTH victims of circumstance and neither of them are bad people. They're just trying to have happiness with the bad hand they've been dealt.
I never really thought victoria was an asshole. I more of thought that of emily. Yes she was murdered and was waiting for marriage and with her own problems but victor doesn't owe her anything to actually go through with her to set her free. She has nothing on him and he was just put in that situation. They literally just met and dont know shit about each other and not to mention she is fucking dead. She comes out of nowhere and expects victor to marry her so ofc victor tricks her to "see his parents" so he can go to the living world as any sane person would do because he doesn't know what she is capable of and can possibly hurt him if he straight up says "no" and angers her.
And in the end when she finally let her go, well he was never hers in the first place so thats what it should be. They literally just met!
I don't understand why victor would finally accept to marry her either because he literally doesnt have to when she was basically just forcing him to marry a corpse.
It's what bias does to people; it clouds our mind from seeing the wrongs and rights. Besides the fact that we get more time with emily and learn what drives her, emily is a pretty nice and charming person and her piano skills is a great bonus; she is just more fun and easier to relate to for most people. There is also the fact that people tend to be ignorant of the societal implications in the movie, which is based on real life historical settings; victoria's family is old money gentry/nobility now bankrupt, victor's family is new money merchant class, women needed to marry for financial stability and societal protection, being expressive and passionate was considered unladylike or improper, etc etc. Knowing these details gives perspective into all the characters, especially victoria, and again, most people aren't well informed about these things, especially nowadays unless one is a history or jane austen nerd.
The only one I hate is Barkis. I have empathy for Victor, Victoria and Emily.
I’m going to respectfully disagree that Victor is acting “selfishly.”
HE WAS KIDNAPPED. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO OBLIGATION FOR HIM TO COOPERATE WITH THE WOMAN WHO IS HOLDING HIM CAPTIVE AGAINST HIS WILL, no matter how sympathetic his kidnapper may be.

I know many people wanted Emily and Victor to end up together but I love the ending. Like they said, Emily didn't love him that way but still he helped her so much so much and in the end gave her the closure she needed.
At the end she did love him that's why she chooses his happiness over her own, becuase she truly loves him and is willing to let him go for his own happiness. That and what they said she felt peace realizing she is enough and sacrificing her wants and "needs" for others is what brought her true joy and peace.

You can say she has finally see things as they are, she wanted to be married so much that she couldn’t be in peace after being killed…She is kind, and loveable, but she can’t live no more, because what happened and it was time to accept it. Is more an I want you, than I love, until Emily let him go thinking about his happiness.
Her story is more about loving herself before loving someone else. They talk in the movie a lot about how she wanted to be married when she was alive, like obsession, and ending with her married to someone dead or alive would be terrible for her and the partner.
There are no therapists in the movie😅sadly

I appreciate how Victor attempts to be respectful to her parents as it demonstrates how he truly loves Victoria and understands that her complex relationship with them is not the same as his frustration toward their attitude.
What a great point! I experience this with my in-laws, and I never saw it in this movie till now.
My husband was the one to tell me they’re pretty narcissistic and materialistic, and kind of toxic, but he still loves them and tries to honor them because they are his parents.
I see all of those traits in them, and it makes me dislike them, but I choose to work hard to be friendly and kind with them, because I know it means a lot to him.
@@milo_thatch_incarnate Mm, just be careful with that, especially if they start demanding things from your husband that effects you, him and any kids that you have. Parents like that depend on your husband willing to overlook their toxicity to keep THEM happy and if he ever establishes boundaries, they WILL turn on him (and you) quick.
@@Callimo - Yes, I actually considered going back to edit my original comment to include that we've agreed that his parents don't get to set the boundaries, make demands, or have any say in our life or how we live it. That's healthiest for us.
_Especially_ when it comes to grandkids, because I've already seen that with their other grandkids, they feel completely entitled to their time, pictures of them whenever they demand, expecting their parenting advice to be taken, etc.
When I say we're friendly with them, I really mean cordial, but taking everything they say with a grain of salt, and not being pressured by them into anything (while remaining cordial). We both do that.

Can we talk about how Victoria was willing to put herself in danger, threat of being put in an asylum, just to save Victor? She doesn’t get enough love!

@@LadyLuckyLu that's because a lot of people were rooting for Victor and Emily to get together and are pinning the blame on Victoria for 'getting in the way'. A lot of people give her crap because, yeah she was trying to warn the priest about Emily taking Victor away and her going through with marrying Lord Barkis. One, she married him not out of love but money and is also BEING forced to marry by her parents who've never given her the time of day in her whole life, probably since the day she was born, until they needed her to marry for money, not love. Two, A LITERAL CORPSE took Victor away, a walking, talking dead person. If I saw a loved one of mine get taken away by a corpse I'd be frantic and trying to get help too. Plus in the end, Victoria wasn't getting in the way of the wedding, she was watching from a distance in shock, probably cause a whole grave yard came back to life and is celebrating a wedding, but is also shocked that Victor isn't going through with it but she NEVER steps out to stop it herself, she watches because she knows it's Victors choice by him reciting the vows. It's actually EMILY who makes the choice to stop the wedding because she knows its not right for her to take someone else away from a loved one, a genuine loved one who cares, which she is but she realizes what and whom she's taking Victor from and through that moment she stumbled through the vow she makes the choice to put a stop to it. This is what we call a character arc.

Something I’ve heard recently is so much hate towards Victoria for being selfish and only wanting marriage, and also Emily for stealing Victoria’s chance at happiness. We don’t see much of Victoria and Victor’s relationship, we see he has more chemistry with Emily, but we do see Victoria is neglected by her cruel parents and is marrying into Victor’s newly rich family because her family is bankrupt. Emily on the other hand has been waiting for years for someone to ask for her hand so she can be at peace. She does technically kidnap Victor but once he understands her situation and thinks Victoria is marrying someone else, he offers to give his life for Emily. That is true kindness. He is not a bad guy, he’s just a shy, sheltered guy who has good intentions. I understand all the arguments made about Victoria and Emily, but when you step back and see things from their perspective you can understand they just want to be happy and they do care for Victor. He cares for them as well, although he was terrified of getting married and making a mess of the wedding rehearsal, he is still a good guy under pressure to marry into nobility by his parents.
Who says that Victor is a bad guy? 😀😀
@@princesserika9899 No one, I’m just adding that because it might look that way because he lies to Emily in order to get back to Victoria, but he does make his peace with both of them. He’s tossed into both marriages but he’s able to have his own happiness in the end
That's what I love about the movie
I always feel sad this story gets divorced from it's Russian folklore roots. The story is basically the same with what Burton created with one minor difference. Emily dies because of cultural oppression (think Esmeralda's song from Hunchback of Notre Dame to read between the lines TH-cam might delete my comment for).
Anyway Victor and Victoria are of the same peoples in the story and their promise to live on and remember Emily has more resonance because they mean it deeply. They won't let women like her be forgotten. I understand why that context got cut because it's not wildly family friendly but it ends up meaning that they try and restore some peace to the past.
Russian fairytales are really really well written.
I disagree. He likes Emily but I’ve always felt his chemistry is with Victoria. Look at how they meet…awkward, but they click immediately.
Victor needed to meet Emily to be a better person for Victoria. I’ve always felt this movie was a gender reversed Phantom of the Opera.
Kinda realized how the worm is kinda representative of her inner thoughts, the selfish ones, or rather the strong feelings she bears.
It's the worm that berates her, it's also the one that suggests killing victor.
And when Emily is walking out of the church, the worm isn't by her side.
It is because she let go of her wishes that she got rid of the worm of her negative thoughts that was literally gnawing her inside out.
Yah it's a great representation of negative thoughts being the worm that eats you inside
Their piano duet is EVERYTHING. One of the most communicative, emotional pieces of music I’ve heard in recent years…
I know it gets glossed over in this episode because Emily's heartbreak is more core to the story than her actual death, but I also like to think that part of her reaching fulfillment at the end is the realization of who Barkis is and what he did to her. Not just the solving of that last lingering mystery, but connecting that all of her heartbreak, her desire to be a bride, all those years of pining... was ultimately because of a man who was, to put it lightly, a complete asshole. If Rebecca's interpretation of Emily is someone who's been living in heartbreak, a state that feels like death, Barkis is the one that put her there, both literally and figuratively. By confronting him and what he did to her, I think that's what helps her realize that while she wants to be a bride, what she needed was that sense of closure, and marrying Victor wouldn't give her that.
I also like how, in terms of character design, so many of the people in the afterlife look like they're all bones and they're just enjoying themselves completely, while Emily's got more of an undead look to her, showing how she's still attached to her life. Granted, I think how bony everyone is or isn't there is just an indication for how long each person's been dead, but hey, can't let that get in the way of an interesting theory!
What’s weird to me is that everyone always mentions what Emily wants but not what victor or Victoria wants. Even if it sounds messed up, Emily already had her life. It was pretty much an innuendo from the start that victor wanted to kill himself before he met Victoria. And Victoria was miserable until she met Victor and actually fought to keep him. I don’t know why she even gets hate tbh. Victor liked Victoria since they first met and towards Emily, it felt more of a forced marriage than his actual one with Victoria. Also I was fine with the ending as a kid I don’t understand why a lot of people hated it.

@ojealism yeah but I like how she sort of redeemed herself at the end and realized she was in the wrong. I don’t think she was a horrible person but definitely very desperate selfish and delusional. I guess victor wasn’t perfect either because he could have explained it to Emily without being harsh and let her know straight up that he was practicing on her hand for Victoria. However that would make a short and kinda boring film so the story throughout and how it ended was perfectly fine, its just how people reacted to it that upsets me. Also victor wasn't going to marry Emily for her sake, he was going to accept death. Like i said he wanted to kill himself at beginning and towards the end because he thought victoria had moved on and thought that was the only option left
I'm a fan of Emily but I agree she was selfish but luckily Emily comes to understand how much wrong she did with Victor and Victoria and let go of her pain and moves on to the afterlife a perfect ending for her. @@sweethvmm8582
@@sweethvmm8582I mean I love Emily for her character growth. She also wasn’t completely in the wrong. Victor did propose to her. The whole plot is a play on the “miscommunication” trope, and the “oopsie daisy, I slipped and accidentally [married a corpse]”. It’s not meant to be taken that seriously. Judging any of them harshly is just not fair. Emily realized she was being selfish. She also wasn’t going to ask Victor to die for her.

I've had to cut out a lot of my family because that "love" was a desire to control me and make me into someone I wasn't meant to be. I've worked hard to become my own person and not another version of my parents
such a powerful movie about how a woman can be neglected to the point she accepts whoever to love her and Victor learning how important Victoria is to him and his life and that he truly loves her and is not marrying her for money such an underrated movie
Just a correction: Victor never wanted to marry her for her money in the first place. It’s an arranged marriage from both him and Victoria’s parents.
It’s also Victoria’s parents wanting Victoria to marry Victor so they’ll be saved from being poor. They’re the ones who need money.

Especially since Victoria's family NEED money desperately.
Also, Victor's family are actually rich fish merchants but are looked down upon because they're from a lower social class. That's why Victor's parents agreed to this marriage so they can mingle with the higher social class, to which Victoria's family are.
@@NinaSylveon No, if both are poor the match would not happen. Nobility are snooty and care about titles after all. However, the title itself matters little to nothing if they do not have the money to support that title, which is when why bankrupt nobility/gentry, heck even royalty, consider marrying rich people of lower class. Victoria's family is indeed bankrupt as shown by their empty vault in the movie. Victor's family is rich merchant class as it was mentioned how they have a fish business AND Victor's mom wearing a turban.

I also like how Victor grows up. He starts out timid and terrified of everything and grows to be a loving, caring, and brave man.
It's really a testiment to the animators and Helena Bonham Carter's performance that Emily can be a rotting, undead corpse who can look and sound very frightening and creepy one minute, but also be this adorable cinnamon roll who you don't want to see be hurt, and want her to be happy.

I love how even though Emily is the one who's dead, she is still so beautiful and always has this bright light/glow behind her. She's graceful and full of life, having many expressions. The contrast with the living people, who are monotone in color (like they mentioned) and almost emotionless except for maybe greed/hate, is amazing and just makes you wanna root for her and the dead. Just a masterpiece I've loved as a child and adult 😍
I think its unfair to talk about Victor's "selfishness" and his hurting Emily when he's literally been kidnapped and Emily won't listen to his explanations. Folks are allowed to hurt the people that force them to marry them aganist their wills
I think that he still is acting on selfishness because he's only thinking about himself, but I don't think that it's a bad thing and he had very good reasons to act the way he did. I think that everyone needs a bit of selfishness to be able to look out for themselves. I know selfishness is usually viewed in a bad light but it's necessary for us to be at least a bit selfish so we could stay true to ourselves, and Victor wasn't about to give up on himself and the people he knows just for some stranger who wants a groom.
“Tell me dear…can a heart break once it stopped beating?”
That sentence made me break so much,I saw this movie when I was a child and it was incredibly sad how the other guy treated Emily,both in life and in death :,)
Somehow the intro summary is the first time I realized Emily is using Victor as a rebound for the heartbreak of being killed by her fiancé. She isn't clinging to Victor just because she likes him, she likes the idea of him as the person who married her. When she recognizes that Victor is a good person, she also realizes that tearing him away from someone else just perpetuates the cycle of heartbreak, and thus she needs to let him go.
The piano duet - geez I'm STARVING for someone to make a musical analysis video essay of it.
He joins in by continuing her theme, she insists on repeating it, he puts a spin on it, she repeats again but gives it a slight variation in the harmony; then he plays his own theme, she isn't impressed... yet, but when he starts again with an ostinato she joins in wholeheartedly - and it's with _his_ theme in _her_ low register.
21:11 really stuck with me, as someone who recently has broken up with a cheater and just saw that person two days ago with a new person really hurt. I told my friend "I feel like I am too nice, people who claimed they cared about me hurt me in the worst ways, in a way I wouldn’t ever dream about hurting them back. I wish I could go down to their level, and get them back"
Hearing that integrity is the best way, really was reassuring that I am healing myself by not stooping down that low.
Buddha said "holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else. You are the one who gets burned."
Unless they change their ways, they will suffer by their own actions. They are holding onto the hot coal. You don't need to hurt them; they are already harming themselves.
You are the one who is able to move on, to actually LIVE and love and be happy, because you care. To heck with the pretenders. Find the people who actually care about you, who support you when they disagree, who love you for you and don't try to manipulate. The ones who love you through their actions, not just words.

I've seen sources online talking about how the original folktale was Jewish in origin and that the "Emily" character was meant to represent young Jewish women who had been kidnapped from their weddings and murdered during the pogroms (as an act of genocide), and Victor and Victoria were a more modern Jewish couple. If that's accurate, that would have been fascinating to include in the movie somehow - Emily's heart being appeased not only because Victor showed her true love, but because he and Victoria are able to live in safety.
But there's quite a lot of Christian imagery in the film, isn't it? The church, the priest's appearance, etc

I definitely wish the original folktale had been addressed. Maybe it would have been too much for the movie's intended audience, but it definitely gives the story so much more weight than "this one swindling jerk".
I rewatched Corpsbride last weekend. As a gown up I notice so many details I missed. How neglectfull Victor and Victorias parents are. And People seem to believe Vicky and Vic don't connect, well they see each other the first time when the movie starts but they do connect over the Music in those stolen moments. They aren't even supposed to have those few minutes alone at the piano. But in those minutes Victor sees how gentle and kind Victoria is. And Victoria sees that Victor would be willing to let her learn the piano. She has a chance of happyness there. What many people don't realize is how awfull the position is Victoria finds herself in when Emily kidnapps Victor. She is basically left at the altar. That makes her unmarridgeable! If she doesn't marry the vilain she won't marry at all. Victorian etiquette was cruel in that regard. Victoria would be at her parents mercy and her parents would not be mercyfull. They want money and Victoria can't help them to get it anymore. Imagine her live. Victor knew that. That's why he tried so desperately to go back. That is far from selfish. Emily on the other hand had it bad, too. She was burried alive. That's why her skeleton hand sticks out. She tried to claw herself out. Her dress is ripped very high nearly to the hips. That's no fashion choice. Think about what that suggests. Of course she wants happieness but as she says at the end. I can't steal another brides happieness and groom. Victor never belonged to her. As the old skeleton told Emily: It's till death separates us and you are death. You aren't married to him. To put it simple Emily has no business meddling with the living. Yes she was hurt, yes she didn't deserve her fate but that makes her actions not less wrong.

The story isn't originally Tim Burton's. It's a Russian folktale he adapted. She is thrown into an incredibly shallow grave in the story to humiliate her corpse as part of their murder. Because the story has deeper cultural reference points then this film was ok exploring. (understandable as it links to genocide) long story short. Burton and the team kept ALOT of the original story beats. Way more than you'd expect. The shallow grave is one of them

This movie is one of my absolute favorites, it’s MASSIVELY underrated in the Burtonverse. I’m Emily in real life so the bittersweet nature of this movie really hits me 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
What I love is that neither leading lady is painted in a negative light. Victoria has her own brand of backbone and I love her for that, while Emily is much more out of the box, like myself. I adore both women so much!

I actually would go so far as to say it's Tim Burton's best. This and Beetlejuice are my faves from him.
I think it’s unfair to suggest Victor is doing anything wrong when he lies to Emily to get back to the living world. I know that he soon learns that she is fundamentally a good, kind person, but at that point the only thing he knows about her is that she wants him to stay in the land of the dead. She essentially wants him to die. This is life or death for him, and he has no way of knowing how she would react to any suggestion he’s not willing to stay. He is doing *exactly* what you should do when you are kidnapped by someone who is telling they want to keep you prisoner forever (or kill you) cause they love you.
I live a simple life. I see Cinema Therapy, I see Rebecca Parham, I click 😁 I love the Corpse Bride, it has an amazing score and a really cool story to tell.
I loved Corpse Bride as a kid but was really confused with the ending as I wanted Victor and Emily to end up together. But as I got older, I really appreciated the message and the ending for Emily's story - finding inner peace and closure. Which is much more powerful.
When my husband and I got married 5 yrs ago we used the vows from this movie because we both loved it and the movie. ❤ Happy Halloween 👻🎃👻

I love the exploration of losing something that you wanted the most, and I can relate to it heavily.
Long story short: I did ballet for 11 years. I started when I was 2. I didn't want to make a career out of it or anything, but it was my outlet and my everything. I ended up getting a benign, but aggressive tumor in my fibula that had to be surgically removed. I also had to get a bone graft because my bone was so hollowed from the tumor. I rehabbed my ankle (it was my lower fibula and close to my ankle), but the tumor reoccurred. It was never the same after the 2nd surgery, and I had to stop dancing because it wasn't safe or a possibility.
I legitimately mourned the loss of ballet in my life. Mourned what I thought my life would be. Eventually, I accepted it and now I'm happy, but it is definitely a process. This movie shows that, and its amazing because of that.
The thing with Emily is that she was so hurt because of the deception she's been through that she was blinded, she somehow put in her head that only another romantic lover would bring her back to happiness and forgot that she was happy around her friends in the under world! Only in the end of the movie is when she realizes that she didn't exactly needed a lover, she just needed to see how much people around her loved her and when Victor decides do die to be with her was when she realized that she already had enough
I love that in the piano duet scene, Emily starts out annoyed when he plays with her, then she's intrigued, then shes like "challenge accepted" and then they're besties
I think as much as the world of the dead is exciting compared to the living, everyone there is stuck exactly how they died. There's no growth or thoughts of the future, even a wedding is something extraordinary. Emily is charming and talented, but as one of the dead she can only think of the past, not the future. She doesn't want a partner for eternity, she just wants someone to finish her wedding. Victoria, while subdued in comparison, represents the reality of marriage. Her world is drab and full of rules and responsibilities, things Victor would rather avoid, but it also has growth and change. It's in Victoria that he sees a life ahead of him, while marrying Emily would mean literally choosing suicide.

I just realized something about you guy's fashion choices in your videos. Jono's is often wearing blue which is the more collected of colors. It's more composed and meant to be calming. Jono's the therapist, so it represents his role in the videos. Alan is mostly wearing orange (best color) which is more of a symbol for passion and creation. He goes over more of technical stuff and is more openly emotional about the movies. That is so smart to free from a writing standpoint because it signifies the roles you play in the videos. I love details like these! Good job!

This is my favorite Tim Burton movie out of them all. I would have been ok if Emily and Victor ended up together but I LOVE the ending when Emily's soul is laid to rest permanently.
The moment Emily looks back before passing on always breaks my heart. She looks back at what she never got to have but accepts that fact and finds peace that she was able to give the one thing she wanted most to Victor and Victoria. The music adds to it as the sad note plays with them standing at the altar with their whole life ahead of them and Emily is willingly giving it up knowing that it's not what's best for her or them if they had gone through with their original plan.

I’m so glad y’all covered this movie. When I first watched it I was actually grieving for Emily at the end of the movie because I couldn’t get past the fact that she never got what she wanted because to me it was such a small ask to be happy. But rewatching it this year and seeing the interpretation in this video, I would agree and see this perspective as more empowering and joyful for her.
Emily was a scorned woman and yet she had a heart of gold. She couldn't bring the wrath; it wasn't in her nature.
I love the theories around Frankenweenie, corpse bride, and nightmare before Christmas as all being a trilogy of sorts. Even if the dogs aren't the same name and various other inconsistencies. I just find it an adorable connection between the three :)

I’m surprised they didn’t talk a bit more about the animation. Contrary to popular belief, there is almost *no* CGI used. This is 99% legit stop-motion animation. The behind-the-scenes stuff on the dvd is absolutely jaw-dropping. The amount of work, dedication and commitment it took to make this movie sets it as one of the best animations of all time imo.
I loved the part where Emily turns into a bunch of blue butterflies. It’s soooooo beautiful and sad yet full of inner peace. 🥰🥰🥰

The part where an Emily finally dissolves into butterflies is so poetic and moving to me. It’s bittersweet because she no longer exists. But maybe once you heal from heartbreak, you are literally reborn, not so much that you have to die lol

What a beautiful episode of Cinema Therapy!! I’d like to add, how much the music adds to the emotional expressions on the characters faces and the energy throughout the movie. See for instance, how when Emily finally accepts to be with herself the music goes up and turns kind of angelic as she’s literally moving up to the night sky turning into magical butterfly particles
Oh damn lol I didn’t think this movie would hit hard in any point in time. I had recently went through a breakup with someone I really loved and I honestly was and still am in pain that it ended so abruptly and that this person didn’t love me how I wanted to be loved. I’m now coming into the sense of I don’t need anything more than love for myself
The eyes are the gateway to the soul and can tell a lot about the internal life of a person, so makes sense the eyes are the thing you don’t want to mess up in animation
I like to think that true love did set Emily free in the end, but it wasn't the romantic type of love since there's other kinds
This came at a PERFECT time for me as I'm still reeling from a break-up.

Genuinely as a child. Out of all Disney princesses and non Disney princesses I felt most connected to Emily. She exudes elegance and has such a tragic backstory. Almost an allegory for depression in all of her blue glory. Also her character design is chefs kiss 💙💙💙
This is one of my favorite movies, I love the stop-motion, one of the many reason's I enjoy Tim Burton's work, I honestly feel bad for Victoria in this film, she's thrown into this arranged marriage, falls in love with Victor, but then he vanishes, her parents don't really care about her, and she's then forced to marry a murderer. I'm glad she got her happy ending. ❤

I love the use of the butterflies / moths ... From beginning to end you know what they are for .. yet the beauty of it all was saved for that ending 💝
I think it's great that the Land of the Dead always seems more "alive" than the village.
Between filming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton called on his best friend and his dear wife to voice the stop motion animation “Corpse Bride”. The film is a beautiful story of a catastrophic groom who fails to say his wedding vows and accidentally proposes to a different bride. The analogy that the film makes is very interesting, as the world of humans is completely dark, gloomy, empty and the world of the dead is filled with parties, music and drinks. An accurate shot by Tim that demonstrates his incredible skill when it comes to animation.

It doesn't matter if I'm cold or hot.
My heart doesn't beat, but it still breaks;
And he continues to suffer, refusing to surrender.
Death is in me,
But I still have tears to give. ♪♪
The plot itself is just good, without any major surprises, what is most incredible about this film is Tim Burton's ability to create a macabre earthly setting, almost in black and white, melancholic and lifeless, and in counterpoint a land of the dead full of of color, music, joy, party, full of life! And of course, this trio of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter is a delight ♥ I recommend it!
“Can a heart break after it has stopped beating?”
A film where the dead are more alive and colorful, while the living are dead and ''gray''.
I love Tim Burton's work in both animation and live action. Here in particular, it continues with its style and characteristics: Dark, fun, crazy, original, different, brilliant. It is a work that criticizes the Victorian era where there are hypocritical, bitter, gray people who only think about appearances, status and power in every way. And suddenly the character discovers the underground world where the dead are much happier than those alive on the surface. It is an unforgettable work, with peculiar and unforgettable characters such as the skeleton dog who is very cute and loyal. And it features a main character in conflict about the meaning of marriage and what actions he will take in life from now on. A concise script that gives us a masterpiece that once again the great Tim Burton nails the production, especially in the visual aspect, the effects are fantastic, the studio work is incredible. It's no wonder that Tim Burton's animation and live action works are my favorites. 10/10.
Three things to comment:
1) Victória looks a lot like Anya Taylor-Joy;
2) I think it's cool that the detail of the world of the dead has more colors than the gray world of the living, which is usually the opposite. This must be because those alive are kind of dead inside with all that automatic life filled with antipathy;
3) You may not be a fan of stop-motion gothic animations, but the rhythm, the songs and the excellent production make it a memorable work.
I know it's not a movie but have you guys considered the tenth kingdom? I like the character growth and the way the relationships evolve.

I really can't say how much I needed to see this video today. I've been dealing with the end of a long term relationship and today was one of those bad days where it feels like everything is hopeless. I think I might go rewatch Corpse Bride, I feel like it'll have more of an impact this time
