Pulling A Corvair Engine In Four And A Half Minutes!!! (7.3.12)

  • We had to take the engine transmission and differential out of my 1963 Corvair! We were having trouble with the starter and the ring gear on the torque converter. So, inorder to access those parts, we had to pull the whole engine! which was easier than you would think!

    Many years ago.. ( about 1973 ) I had similar problems which regularly cracked the starter nose piece... requiring replacement. I lowered the engine onto a plastic milk crate then used a chain fall from the garage ceiling to lift the rear of the body up. I was then able to pull the engine rearward by sliding the plastic crate across the floor.
    I miss my Corvairs. I had 63, 64, 65 Corsa, 66 and 68.

    This was one of the marketing and advertising claims for the Corvair. They said the whole “power pack” was quickly removable so the whole “unit” was easily serviceable. The idea was it was quicker and easier to remove the power unit for speed and ease of repair and the owner would save money in the long run.

    Our family had a 1964 Corvair Monza convertible (110 hp), and later on I had a 1966 Corvair Corsa convertible (140 hp). ;-) They were fun.
    My mom worked at a tire store (bookkeeper) and the 64 had some of the first Michelin radials in the U.S installed (free). Gas station attendants shook their heads when my mom said they weren't flat. ;-)

    I had a standard shift 65 red corvair in high school. 1974.. It broke starters, made sound like bad throwout bearing, but only when foot was OFF clutch pedal. flywheel had a thick sheet metal inner, which would flex very slightly. Removing flywheel revealed six bolts holding bell housing to engine ( Small end of housing) three had come loose and rubbed the flywheel, which warped it, and the attached pressure plate wobbled when running, Note: ring gear teeth are on pressure plate. So it broke the starter snout off. Nothing does this except a corvair. Had this assembly out twice before finding it, Took a very long time.

    Dad had a 66 500, 65 Monza. I drove the 66 and could have the engine on the floor in 30 minutes. I learned a lot about working on cars with that rig. Every once in a while I kinda miss it. Will probably never own another one.

    Pity the Corvair was never in Europe (except Switzerland and Norway, I think). I find this car fascinating. I know it is not a very good or safe car, but really I like the model (almost Italian styling), the engine set up (Porsche) and the interior and engine feel (American). That combined makes this a unique car.

      The safety thing was overplayed, they were interesting and nice driving cars, have a friend here who's owned 6 of them and recently bought a '66 with an automatic, he let me drive it around, was decently powered, good brakes for all drums and drove very normally. Engine structurally seemed more Tatra like as it was pushrod and more utilitarian. I kind of want one now, 4 speed Corsa would be nice.

    Some good stuff to know, but even with my 50 years in the car business I doubt you can pull that whole assembly in under 5 minutes. Maybe 5 minutes in time-lapse but not in real time. Rebuilding a Corvan 95 as I type. Garage space is tight (hey it's winter in Ct) and I'm into it about 6 hours already for driveline removal. OTOH, I never did one of these before so it's a steep learning curve. I plan on doing the rear suspension over while everything is out for a differential problem. Will probably do the clutch as well as the rubber mounting bushings that hold everything together.

    This question is a bit off subject, maybe, but here goes... I have a 1981 Mazda B2000 truck, she has a custom bed with step-side and fenders, and windshield visor, so not a typical looking little truck. To set her aside from any other truck, I need something big. I'm a fan of old VW's and the Chevy Corvair, and wanted to see if a mid engine setup would be possible with a Corvair engine and Transaxel. Your thoughts? At the least, a 2500cc VW engine mounted to the Corvair Transaxle due to space.

    • @toddheil42

    Isn't what I am seeing is a clutch and pressure plate instead of a torque converter which was used with the two speed automatic transmission? I've never seen a Corvair engine removed with engine and transaxle, so I could be mistaken. Nice video!

    Had a 66 in 69, pulled the motor out the bottom more than once using scissors jack on a skateboard, seems there were 8 bell bolts, two in the rear. From beginning to end, everything: jack, stands, electric, fuel, linkage, about 40 minutes. That's the way it was

    • @andrewgillis8572
      @andrewgillis8572 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK Paka could you take a minute? Can I take the diff & PG off my EM car, frontwards & down - & thus get into the bell housing with ne real engine drop????
      There's no boss upfacing to match the chain fall eye, at least not seen here - just on he rear of the housing at 12 o clock position.
      Meaning, i could be good.
      Goal is is to clean converter, check starter Bendix - & the key, , add new pressure plate with new teeth
      I can support body & engine of course but want to move as little possible out from under the vehicle. What say you, LP?

    I always loved the idea of having the engine in a Corvair turned 180º, engine in front of transmission; as there are many reverse turning camshafts available, it won't be a problem; for the ring and pinion, if needed, for sure someone will build a custom-made unit allowing an inverted turning for wheels.
    This would noticeably improve steering, handling and road behavior of Corvair cars, that was already acceptable, whatever the 'Unsafe at any speed' promoters would cry, as long as tires had the right pressures, and steering wheels alignment and load is within specifications.
    How much room exists below the back seat of a Corvair to accommodate a centrally located engine?
    A firewall thick and strong enough will prevent engine going too far ahead in case of a front crash...

    • @scottgolden2766
      @scottgolden2766 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jose G A I have seen a couple mid engine with a small block Chevy half way in the back seat. I'm pretty sure they flip the ring gear. Crown manufacturing is the company's name and they have a kit for that. I think that's the name of the company

    • @Oldbmwr100rs
      @Oldbmwr100rs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was done by many people, a company called Crown used to make a kit to turn the driveline around and install a V8, it did work, but required you to build your own engine cover.
