Here in this video (using PAD-O-PAPER and MARKERS), I explore the idea of.... semi-representational self-portraits, and the possibility that they could show us things about our inner selves. What do you think, am I onto something, or going totally crazy?

It’s so funny you talk about regret of not playing piano, and I watch your drawings and feel longing to be an artist. I think there is loss no matter what path we choose- and I think why we feel grief even while we have joy. And it’s ultimately why we need comfort even in joy...which is why I watch your videos:) thank you!

Hi Peter, I hope you are doing well! I am assuming you are busy with school work but in case that is not the case I just want you to know I think the work you have done on TH-cam has helped me so much. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago and have lived in constant pain and extensive treatment. I had not done any art since I was a child. You are the one who taught me to just draw lines and dots, and then draw another line. I can’t even explain what this has done for me mentally. I am certainly not at your level, however, I have made drawings and I have improved. It means so much to me to have this because I am often too weak to get out of bed but I can draw some lines and dots. Often, it’s the only thing I can do. So thank you Peter for sharing your art and trying to explain how you can just do it for the sake of doing it. I hope you are well, I miss new uploads but there are so many videos to watch and rewatch, I cannot complain. I hope everything is alright, that is the main thing. I wish you all the best, all the time! You are my favorite artist, youtuber, and teacher!

Talk about feeling behind, I feel ya there. I’m 30 and feel like I truly just started being a “serious artist” I was dissuaded from following art (the thing I was good at and liked) quit for 5 years after graduation, then came back to it. I’ve got a whole non art life I work around, kids, job, etc, it’s a constant battle against the clock… and like you I have other hobbies I want to give time to too. It’s hard not to be hard on ourselves about where we’re at. But as long as we enjoy the process I guess that’s all that matters.

Peter, I just finished a video of yours from last year. I noted you mentioning how you often put a filter on your videos to make your inks look more black. If I could make a recommendation, I highly recommend the Sailor Kiwaguro Ultra Black Pigmented ink. When I first got it, I thought to myself, "Goodness! My inks are finally as black as the ones that Peter Draws uses."
The Ultra Black in the name is no joke, and I find it amazingly keeps my pens wet, and is extremely black, but does not bleed (even in a normal notebook). If you already use it, though, please disregard!

Not only just drawings and self potraits, but also someone's general taste in art tells a lot about your inner psyche, I believe. The types of colors you prefer...and if you like it sketchy or clean and so on. You begin to notice a trend and it's always fun to try to evaluate what these could mean.

I had a college experience with an art teacher who thought she could interpret my personality from my art.
I did smaller scaled works to save up space on my paper because art supplies are expensive.
She interpreted as a self esteem issue on my part. I told her " I am pretty sure this is a community College art course not a psyche 101 course."
She hated me but I realized the class wasn't worth my time when she showed us an drawing of a mouse she was doing that took her months and it was only half drawn 🙄.

so when I was a kid my dad gave me his old College text books from the 80’s and I particularly liked the psychology book and read that thing cover to cover several times. I had an overactive mind as a kid and I particularly latched on to the chapters about schizophrenia, I was deeply worried I would suddenly have schizophrenia set in during my teenage years (maybe a 10 year old with an overactive imagination should not be given a college psychology textbook? idk but my dad was never the type to sugar coat anything or shied me from information) but I remember a section of the book had self portraits from a couple of artists who developed schizophrenia or some other form psychosis… It showed multiple self portraits they drew years apart and each one becoming more abstract and chaotic, it was really interesting almost as they descended into “madness” so to did their work. They also showed the Louis Wain cats- he started with nice little paintings of cute cats and as time went on and his schizophrenia became worse his cats paintings became super psychedelic and trippy and strange. I believe he was eventually even institutionalized but continued painting. this was around 100 years ago when as a society we didn’t understand how to properly help these people. Even 20+ years later that psychology book sticks with me. There is also an artist who created a bunch of self portraits under the influence of various drugs which I really like. His name is Bryan Lewis Saunders.

I feel like you would like the movie “The Pistol” it goes over Pete Maravich, and his father had a similar way of building his son(Pete) up for basketball.
