    There are hundreds of videos on youTube showing how to breed all sorts of fish but yours are the only ones that cover absolutely everything from setting up the tank, water parameters, filtration (or not), plants, mops, selecting and conditioning the fish, etc etc including when and why it doesn't always go according to plan. You cover the lot.

  • @TitanChief10
    @TitanChief10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heey man these are such amazing complete videos, yet I still have one question. I have honey gouramis in my community tank. The male has created a bubble nest about a week ago and yesterday I investigated the nest to see there are eggs in there. However since the nest has been there for so long is it safe to assume the eggs might not be fertile/alive (It would have been useful if I looked at the nest earlier but I didn't want to break apart the nest which was necessary). The male is starting to terrorize the rest of the fish a bit and claiming most of the tank. However I have seen that the fish can still eat and so does the male. Would placing the nest in a floating breeder stop his behaviour and allow the eggs to survive if they are still alive? Or should I destroy the nest? I don't have the active desire or the extra tanks needed to raise the young, although fish life is still precious to me.

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The eggs will hatch within 24 hours, in most cases, and the fry will remain in or near the bubble nest for another 3 to 5 days before they become free swimming.
      If you Don't want to bring the fry on just scoop out the bubble nest.

    • @TitanChief10
      @TitanChief10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MARKSAQUATICS Thank you for the quick reply. I've started removing the nest to the best of my ability. However, when I started scooping away the bubbles I found some free swimming baby fish in between the bubbles. So I'll try my best to raise them, maybe put them with my shrimp tank? Anyway my tank is rather naturalistic so I can't get out all the bubbles which is still enough for the male to keep his protective behavior. Do you know how long this behaviour lasts for? There were still developing eggs in the nest.

    Hi Mark,
    Another excellent video!!
    Quick question about Gold Rams. They have spawned twice now, but have eaten the fry after they have hatched( not the free swimming stage). When they spawn again should I remove the eggs or give them another go? They are very young and I have three(3) sides of the aquarium covered so they do not become frightened.

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best thing to do is remove the fry to a grow out tank as soon as they hatch. Just fill a small tank with the main tank water,add a heater to the same temperature. As soon as they're free swimming start feeding then newly hatched brine shrimp.

      I just had babies two days ago, I had the pair together for less then a week never noticed a bubble nest or breeding. I did see the female hiding and then saw babies.

    Hey Mark, just a little question for you. The infusoria culture, i think i remember you saying it can smell a bit. Does the storage container/jar for it have to remain open or will sealing it with a lid etc kill the infusoria?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leave it open to the air. Try using a banana skin they don't smell as bad. But don't forget to add a piece of plant from your main aquarium ok the starter culture will be on that. 😀👍

    I'm having a hard time culturing infusoria... just had to throw one out... I started 2 more, one with broccoli and one with banana peel... it's been 4 days and not a sign of any.... HELP!!!

    • @robertchapman1957
      @robertchapman1957 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember to add some plant from an established tank as they usually have some micro life on them. Also I can't see mine often, I use a cheap usb microscope hooked up to my computer to see for sure what's in my batches. Some infusoria types are larger and more obvious than others, but just look for the dust moving.

    • @andystokes8702
      @andystokes8702 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you use tap water or water from your aquarium?
      Give it time and you will see that the water goes cloudy, this can take some time and it is caused by bacteria breaking down the organics, either broccoli or banana skin or whatever else you are using. A few days after that the water should begin to clear; that's the infusoria feeding on the bacteria and you'll begin to see them moving in the water (you may need a magnifying glass).
      You really have to give it a fortnight or even three weeks sometimes depending on light, temperature etc. It will happen eventually, just give it time.

      Give it a good 10 days .first it will go cloudy from the bacterial bloom and a few days after that you will see it start to clear . Then have a look with a magnifying glass and you'll see um. You can also use a banana skin or piece of 😀👍
