People should never forget, Steve, that you are an artisan. You practice a profession that few people do any more. You're not just any store, any "mechanic"; you're a keeper of a trade almost lost through the cracks of time, of history. You deserve to be well remunerated for that. Soo much respect for you and your fellow cobblers all around the globe.
not just any mechanic? Mechanics or Automotive technicians spend years on their profession. Working on some of the most complicated machines that are changing at an unprecedented rate. @@TheLynx1984 Yeah, no. There's a reason they dump ex-cons in auto shops. Mechanics are a dime a dozen. Quality mechanics are highly sought after for their rarity.
Yea everybody has full mouth of ecology these days.
But they buy cheap (Made in China) crap and throw it away when it breaks.
But key to ecology and sustainability is to make quality goods and repair them when it breaks.
@Robert Scott - exactly. Between his experience, skill, shop space, tools, equipment and materials, you're talking a massive investment and he deserves to be compensated accordingly, as does any high level craftsman.
@@TheLynx1984 I think he means like you could take your car to any mechanic and have it fixed, or you can take it to a special technician who understands nuance to his trade and has the know-how to fix it right. Don't get stuck on the word mechanic, it's used for tradesmen in other fields.

I would expect a well trained professional/artisan to charge at least $70/hour, and maybe more if they are located on either coast. I think people forget that your hourly rate also covers things like rent on the building, and electricity and web hosting fees and wear and tear on machines, professional fees, training, you tax accountant, placing orders for supplies, etc, etc. Overheads have to be calculated into your prices to make running a business sustainable.
I also think it is easy to forget that when I see you with a pile a cut out pieces and your sew one seam and then the bag is done, that it looks easy. I imagine that 30% of your time is spent looking a bag and reverse engineering how it was made, and coming up with pattern pieces and a plan. And that is not shown because it is less interesting to film.

Exactly. People have no idea how much running a business costs. I had none, untill I ran my own ... It took me a full year to know learn how much I should be charging, and what to expect.
Also there are wastages on materials that Steve have to absorb, as these materials sometimes came with flaws that cannot be used for the repair work.
👌😄 $500 for a bag that would last even one decade is a hell of a deal, let alone the priceless sentimental value and cherished memories that go with it!
Don’t ever feel like you need to justify your prices..... you’re skilled labor with year experience, people pay for quality work. You wouldn’t trust a 1 Star doctor for your children, so don’t trust unqualified people to repair your objects.

@@alextindal2640 totally agree. It helps consumers know what prices for certain repair jobs go for and helps protect them from getting scammed. It also kind shines a light on how much the labour is actually worth ! Most times people get too accustomed to paying incredibly cheap labour for their clothes/items made from countries like China or elsewhere. It helps bring fair wages to workers there too!

You got me with that coffee trick. People who complain about the costs really don’t understand workmanship. Things might be commoditized now and made in mass in factories but repairs are unique and require the human touch, as you demonstrate. Thanks for these videos.
Getting quality workman ship is a lot like buying Oats if you want good clean fresh oats you have to pay a fair price but if you want oats that have been through the horse, their a lot less

I use to have the dirty bench debate with my old boss quite a bit. But it was always a matter of how effectively i got work done. I was almost always juggling 5 tasks at once. So yeah the cleaning side was secondary. But it never prevented me from doing quality work, and making sure customers where happy. These days, I have learned my processes and work habits to the point that I can organize my work areas better. So they become less cluttered. But the work and quality is always more important than how clean my bench is.
BTW, i really appreciate your attention to detail and work ethic. It shows that you care about what your doing. I wish more industries and businesses approached their work to the same degree.
Your customer really loved the person that gave her that bag. I think this is such a beautiful sentiment. You are a blessing.

I discovered Bedo’s YT Channel looking for tutorials on how to care for my leather belongings, and to find a true master leather craftsman. What I immediately liked about Steve’s work ethic that I noticed in all his projects is his attention to details. In this project he added several improvements to the bag that the OEM didn’t do and he uses better materials where needed. Like applying Loctite to the screws then gluing gussets over them, to protect them from chafing the liner or adding leather stiffener to the openings. That’s the level of craftsmanship I am willing to pay for.

I have watched almost all your videos in the last 3 days and I can't get enough of the handbag restoring ..you are so interesting to watch and your skill is amazing! !!😊
Your approach in giving prices is interesting to say the least. My approach to more expensive things that are affordable but may sting a little at first is buy once cry once. Years after the $500 was spent and forgotten the lucky customer will have something much more valuable than the price charged. The video and process also make it special. I have know idea of your hourly rate but out of thin air if it's $50 that's 10 hours of work (just labor no material). For your skill set that is more than reasonable. Not many people can do what you do.
$50 per hour at this level of skill is more than reasonable. It took him years to perfect his skill. If one doesn't like the rate he can go somewhere else, have that person spend 30 hours on it without getting this awesome result.

Firstly I think you are amazing. I will admit that sometimes when you say a price I think it’s expensive. That said, I’ve had inexpensive repairs done to things and sometimes the result is crappy. I’m a voice teacher- someone once said that people who don’t charge a lot don’t think they are worth it.
What I can say is I’ve watched at least one video of yours each night before bed for the last two months. Truth. I appreciate your attention to detail and your passion for your craft. Thanks!
Well, cheers to the shop that stopped work when they figured out it was beyond their capabilities. Anyone who questions the costs needs to research the prices of tools and materials needed to run his shop. A spool of thread can top $100. Oh, and Steve needs to feed his family too. :)

I have three sons and the only one who likes coffee is the one who lives 1,000 miles away from me. I see him only about once a year now and I cannot tell you how much I love drinking coffee with him in the morning. Sometimes we don't even talk, and I don't care. We sit quietly near each other, and for a brief moment of time, I am again his father and he is my son.

Just like magic... It looks brand new!! Re: Your prices-- in my opinion, they are more than reasonable considering the kind of expertise you provide and the end result. It's up to the costumer to decide whether they agree or not to the price. There's another place that provides the same quality and craftsmanship you have but their prices are just unbelievable. Their clients go to them knowing that they'll get an excellent end product. However, they are not nearly as entertaining and funny as you are. Keep up the good work!!
As a kid and even sometimes now, I loved to take things apart. I have a lot of talent to do that, but putting it back together never ends well. Nice to watch someone else do it and do it right. To see it all come together is rewarding.

I just paid $2,000 to repair Converse sneakers from about 20 years ago. It may sound like a lot, but almost all of that cost is tied up in labor. I think $1,900 was labor, and $100 was for new laces.
It’s a nice purse, amazing work, couldn’t stop laughing at the coffee brake. I’m 32 been drinking coffee since I was about 15/16 and I know exactly what you mean about having a cup and chatting with dad. I do it with my father when I have the chance to see him. It’s therapy for the soul!

Well, both are true. He doesnt have to tell people his price but it is helpful for people with similar condition bags, and yes, his prices are too high.
But, that shouldn't matter. There are always customers for every cobblers price range and obviously there are people who can afford his work. I can't, and that's ok. Thankfully there are professional cobblers on his level and higher who are local to me in NYC and more in my price range.

I think it's cool that you are transparent about your costs. It might encourage more people to learn this trade, and it might educate people on what to expect for repair costs. You know your value. You keep getting more work, thus, you are not overpriced.
Why do people want to now what it cost. That something between you and the costumer. Clean bench is a bench where nobody works.
Well maybe some people want to do similar job. So it is good to know what price to expect.

Steve. You need to sneak a label with your name and date in the lining. My Dad and I always left notes inside out 100+ year old homes walls when renovating. For future generations to find. We often found old newspapers inside the walls when we tore them open. I did that to my new home when we built in 2006. I did it during framing in places that a future door would perhaps be made down the line if future generations decided to expand the small house.
