What I like with air balloons is that it's a sereine way of flying. As long as the wind is calm and the skies are clear, it's astounding how relaxing this activity can be. You barely move at all. You just kinda float and you can admire the landscapes calmly and even think. That's amazing.

Because it doesn't get hot enough. The flame below the balloon heats air blown into the balloon enough to cause it to expand and be lighter than the outside air. But the temperature of the hot air in the balloon is below the combustion point of the balloon material.

You can't. Prevailing winds dictate where it will go. And if the flames go out, it drops like a rock rolling downhill, faster and faster. I have witnessed a balloon crash, and it wasn't pretty. A dead drop, from 50 feet, 6 passengers, spilling out from the wicker basket, suffering arm, leg, and skull fractures. I could never understand why these things never had any sort of landing gear, collapsible skids like helicopters, shock absorbed wheels, something, ANYTHING.
