How to Be a Good but Dangerous Man (w/ John Lovell)

  • There is a war on masculinity and men need to rise up and respond. According to former Army Ranger John Lovell, we need an antidote to the "chaos and crisis we are experiencing today." What is this crisis and how must we respond? Check out my recent conversation with the founder of the Warrior Poet Society as we discuss his new book THE WARRIOR POET WAY which releases July 11.

Thank you both. Reminded of a thought that came a while back- I felt God prompting this, but you decide that: You know the story of Achilles- how the Greeks' best warrior sat by at the sidelines whilst they were being pummelled by the Trojans. I felt that this is true in the church. Some of our best warriors- those who had a great heart for the Lord and a passion to pray- are sitting by whilst the battle rages on. Maybe they've lost faith or hope, or been hurt by a congregation or individual, or maybe they've just gone a bit dry or lukewarm and need to rekindle that first love. I think it would be good, at the very least, to pray for those people. That will bring challenges, but God is more than up for those.

Sounds like Screwtape Letters. Wormwood wanted the target guy to die but Screwtape understood he woukd lose the soul to God if the target were to die for others. My dad was John Lovell Bruce. He loved the Lord and taught Sunday School. He regretted being too young for WWI and too old for WWII.

As a European where we don't have guns, I never understood why American Christians hold so tight to their guns, but lately I have to agree: the only thing keeping traditional American values alive are the guns. The insanity happening in the States is simply out of this world.

    • @timffoster

I'd be curious to get a European's take on the insanity here in the USA, as seen from your side of the pond.

    • @bakacs1n
      @bakacs1n ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@timffoster Well, the western part of Europe mostly identifies with the movements, maybe a little more civilized, because there are a lot more regulations in the EU. But in eastern Europe I don't see how in the next 100 years gay marriage would be accepted. The gender debacle by most people is just affirmed as mental illness and insanity. Some media might be more politically correct, but that is all. Any sane person will just call it what it is. Well imagine that in Hungarian for example you don't even have pronouns, so that whole agenda is null in Hungarian. But if in eastern Europe if anyone would find out that their children are brainwashed with that gay and drag things in school I assure you, that person would be beaten to pulp by the parents.

This is your winningest interview. The warrior piece of Christianity is being hollowed out as men within the Church are too afraid to stand up and say they serve God, not the government. As Josh McDowell said subjectivity is creeping in everywhere, this allows for everyone to live in their own world. The best part about physical training is it brings you closer to reality and helps people see their is objectivity outside themselves.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend you read “Wild at Heart”. It’s a great book that deals with what it means to be a man, and how every man carries a scar from their father. It goes through how every man is looking for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue. I actually picked it up a couple years ago on John Lovell’s recommendation (full circle!)

Love this! I know that women and men have different but equal roles and strengths to grow and refine. But I feel that women also need to grow in not being afraid, to be okay being uncomfortable, and becoming stronger and not complacent in our calling and design is the similar. My Marine dad taught me to face and run to my fears. My military service has taught me to be like Deborah. A safe place to land, unafraid to speak truth, and also to give life and encourage in purpose to the Baraks around me. And the thing about grit is so true. A 24 year old PT stud male and me 34 female who is slower can last mentally longer in a long run or a long time in the field. I am not better, I just refuse to give up, or be a liability.

I knew that I would either go completely ( die) or there would be something happen that I didn’t understand ( I never thought that a god was in control)

Hello, this is a year late, but here we go. I believe that you don't seem to fear death as you do not know the true meaning of death without a relationship with the risen Savior. Your Christian friends know this, and their fear springs from the whisperings of the devil and, in our frail humanity, a lack of complete surrender of their life to Jesus. To have no fear of death does not change the reality of the consequences of death without having been covered by the work done on the Cross. This also goes along with the realization that we, as humans, are not inherently good and that we do need a Savior. If you are interested, read the Gospel of John, if only to get another perspective on how to understand your Christian friends. Hope this finds you well.

Appreciate the opportunity to listen to this conversation.
This dear brother, well meaning, screams insecurity as he overemphasizes so-called masculinity.
Carnality comes in all shapes and sizes... no less in a fleshly bravado of mistaken identity and function.
This is a full pendulum swing, a reactionary stance to the world (i.e. wokism, feminism, etc).
This has pinned him down in the ditch on the opposite side of the road in a mere culture war (carnality) possing as spiritual conflict.
If we are not careful, talk like this is an ambush to actual existence and thriving as Christians.
    Hard pass.
    PS
CS Lewis warned us that the Devil sends temptations in pairs.
    Effeminacy and barbary.

Thanks for your channel. I find it very encouraging generally.
However, regarding gun control, I found the logic of John's argument flawed. Many multi-victim shootings in the US are sadly perpetrated by people with serious mental health issues; they aren't hardened/organised criminals. (I suspect organised criminals mostly shoot other criminals.) Most proponents of gun control aren't proposing the banning of all guns, but a system to ensure citizens who purchase guns (particularly powerful semi-automatic weapons) are competent to handle them safely.
It's not hard to see that other countries with gun control laws have much lower multi-victim shooting rates.

"The righteous are bold as lions." For two reasons: 1) they are not afraid of being found out in their secret sins because they are righteous, and 2) they are not afraid of death because they are righteous. That is why they are bold as lions.

  • @royhiggins7270
    @royhiggins7270 ปีที่แล้ว

Christians teach that we are all born with a sinful nature. We are predestined to sin according to Christianity. Is being born one of the greatest sins? If there were no births there would never be any sins correct? The only way to escape our sinful nature is to believe in Jesus Christ and repent to keep oneself from eternal damnation. This presents a catch 22...if you don't believe in Jesus you can never be saved. It is literally impossible for your brain to believe in something it doesn't! Try! For example, no matter how much I would like to believe Santa Clause is true because that would be really cool, my brain doesn't allow it. So now to try to save myself from eternal damnation I honest and truthful say the following prayer: "Dear Christian God if you exist please forgive me for being born...sincerely me". Am I now saved from eternal damnation?

I'll be honest, I have a fair amount or courage but possible torture scares the crap out of me. So much so that at times I'm immobilised. I also fear terrible car accidents. I've been in one fairly bad one and I thought I'd never drive again.

There's no way to know what we face on a daily basis. I live, first for Jesus, then for my family. Fear is a paralyzer, it will keep you from reaching potential you don't know you have. Through my commitment to God, I won't allow fear to stop me. Now that's far different from doing things to test that out, but if tribulation comes, I believe I will face it with courage. Courage is not an absence of fear, it's facing the fear and being in control of your spirit. God bless.. hope I spoke plainly enough for you to understand where I'm coming from.

A good guy may become a bad guy, like old Testament Saul, who then killed a lot of good people. A bad guy may become a good guy, like New Testament Saul, who turned from persecuting many good people to death, and became Paul, an instrument for saving many repentant sinners into God's eternal kingdom. Also, despite a prevailing commitment to God, King David was not only good guy, but also bad guy on some occasions, resulting in adultery and significant deaths. Therefore, arming persons on the good guy versus bad guy paradigm is flawed, due to human individual and corporate variability, and results in some nasty, and even fatal surprises. It is sounder and safer to speak about checks and balances, when it comes to hand weapons and weapons of war. Despite systemic and human deficiencies, checks and balances are more effectively implemented by established organizations, such as police forces, armies, registered security companies, and other official, protective and law enforcement agencies, than by every civilian acquiring a gun or other weapon. Also, state and private law enforcement agencies, including the army, are continually sensitized and held accountable by public feedback, human rights concerns, and court cases. It would be unthinkable for untrained individuals to decide to perform surgeries, do doctors' or dentists' work, or start fiddling with the power supply system of a locality or state; and yet the prevailing concept in some territories on Earth is that everyone who is not formally a police officer, soldier or security personnel, can legally get a gun and safely defend themselves and others without problems. The results of such a philosophy are repetitively disastrous. It is important for all persons to pursue healthful fitness, and to be able to hold their own before the law enforcement intervention level, as certain developmentally damaged persons routinely pursue signs of weakness, through relentless bullying. This may be achieved peaceably through submission to God, and through living a disciplined, well ordered life. Future development of law enforcement weaponry would need to prioritize a restraining, rather than a disabling or killing function, although even this is not without complications. For instance, a human friendly weapon may immobilize a person though rope or net, but the suspect may fall face forward and break nose and teeth, and later be found to be innocent and wrongly harmed by the law enforcement agent(s), resulting in a lawsuit. Also, the guilty suspect thus harmed would still file a case/lawsuit pertaining to excessive use of force. G-d bless!

Interesting discussion. However, as an atheist it raises a number of questions.
How do you reconcile being a dangerous man with the “thou shall not kill commandment” ? The US has 5% of the worlds population yet 40% of the world’s civilian held firearms. In fact there are more guns than people. It also has the second highest death by firearms, and the most mass school shootings. It has high levels of shootings at places of worship and businesses, and suicides by shooting,
If the afterlife is so much better than this life, shouldn’t Christians look forward to death, and does this not make Christianity a death cult?

HH, Good points. On the other hand the C view of death is that it is more life than the life we know is, and the death part a shedding of the skin- then that changes it- like a bunch of dragonfly larvae contemplating a world of air and sunshine.

I'm on my smartphone so I won't get into details, however, you should know that your stats are commonly cited, but well off the map.
Almost without exception, anytime someone compares the USA's homicide rate to other countries, they only look at Western European countries or East Asian ( Japan, for example). Those cultures are as homogenous as the day is long, with scant variation in culture and social norms, Etc. Consequently, There's little social friction, and hence, little violence. Also, and perhaps more importantly, those cultures always tend to place a much higher value on human life than other cultures.
If you try comparing our homicide rate to Africa (or Central America), you'll see that our homicide rate is 1/5th of every single African country's homicide rate. And that's just regular homicide, not Wars or civil unrest. And did I mention guns are illegal in all African countries? The preferred weapon of homicide is the machete.
Imagine how much higher their homicide rate would be if they had access to guns like we do here in America. I shudder to think.
Because fundamentally the core issue in those cultures is a much higher disregard for the sanctity of human life than what we have in America or in West Europe.
Not trying to insult anyone - just stating facts.
Another factor that cannot be ignored is the sky-high homicide rate just within black community. Blacks in the u.s.a. make up 13% of the population, yet account for slightly more than half of all homicides ( blacks kill and are killed at a rate of ~8 times higher than whites). The sad fact of the matter is this: if you were to remove our segment of the population, the homicide rate for all of America would be cut in half.
And that's not just me making stuff up or quoting random Talking Heads; any one can look up all those numbers on FBI's UCR reports.
The core issue is a disregard for the sanctity of human life. Take away the guns, and humans will simply resort to machetes and rocks.
      Sad, but true.
(not that it matters, but I was born in Africa, and I am not white)

    Like and respect these guys
One glitch though on guns. Sure the good guys need weapons to fight the bad guys but the rest of the civilised world rightly thinks the American gun culture is INSANE and how can Americans allow it to go on when your beautiful precious irreplaceable priceless little children are repeatedly having there bodies blown apart often in mass Shootings at school. Every real warrior in America should be devoting their lives to better gun control in your country. No civilian need or should be allowed to have an Automatic rifle. The NRA and the gun industry and Hollywood have your children’s blood on their hands.
Anyone who has walked into a kindergarten where children’s body parts are scattered around will have ALL their good beliefs not only challenged but often destroyed apart from their belief that THIS HAS TO STOP
And the old cliche about its not guns that kill people it’s people is BS.
Look at the statistics. If there hadn’t been a gun around or worse still an Automatic rifle then the horror would have been less.

Can you tell me the statistics, that you've asked us to look at, how many defensive uses of firearms there are in America annually compared to offensive uses per the CDC?

      @curiousgeorge555 ปีที่แล้ว

@@HzFvr I don't see how security at every single place of a possible shooting or mass shooting is possible. I'm torn on the issue. I can see both sides. As for now though, there should be security at every school and place where woman and children are vulnerable. My daughter has 7 kids and she is scared for them. I get it. I agee with the original poster. There should at the very least back ground checks. There should be punishment for the bad guys who carry illegaly. This is insane. 30,000 murders a year?!

I need a gun where I live to protect against rabid foxes which just attacked a family of three this week. Guns are inanimate tools. Some use them for bad. Some use knives, rocks, cars or fertilizer. The tool is not the problem. The heart of the person using the tool is the problem. There would be a civil war if guns were made illegal. As he said there are more guns than people in the US, by the logic that guns are the problem, then America wouldn’t exist with that # of guns. We’d all be shooting each other. The real issue is the lack of value for human life. When young people see mothers killing their own children in the womb, then why should they value life?

For statistics on mass shootings in USA just google mass shootings in USA
In Australia in1996 a deranged gunman murdered 35 people including little children and wounded 23 using 2 semi automatic rifles. Australia came together mostly apart from the gun nuts and banned Automatic weapons for civilian use. If mass shooting is defined as 4 or above there has hardly been any since as far as I know.
Come on real American warriors stand up for the lives of your citizens and children and join the rest of the civilised world. Call out the NRA and theGun Lobby and Hollywood for perpetuating the insanity and bloodshed and grief.
How can the rest of the world respect a country that doesn’t care for its children and other innocent victims
Work a miracle and help turn the civilian Automatic weapons into ploughshares. I

"Love your enemy." "Turn the other cheek." "Do not repay evil for evil."
You don't need to be violent to take up the cause of the orphan and the widow. Their cause is second to God's cause. You do it in God's way.
Small is the gate and narrow is the way to life. Wide are the gate and road to destruction. Many will say to Me, "Lord, Lord, did I not prophecy in your name and cast out demons, and I will say away with you evil doer.
"I advise you not to have families so your attentions do not become divided from The Lord's will."

One step at a time. One challenge at a time, to become that “poet” in my life. The other day a man cut me off and flicked a cigarette butt at my windshield. My blood boiled and my foot accelerated for a second and then I decelerated, took a deep breath and told myself, “Swallow that ego. Choke that pride out. Let it go. This guy won’t get the best of me.” Etc etc etc. I’m 40 and my goals in life are to provide for my kids and wife, to become closer to Jesus and God, and to become a true Warrior Poet. Lovell is correct, we as men never stop growing, we morph and advance and grow into the next being (spiritually, mentally and physically) of our lives. God bless you gentlemen and brothers for this interview 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
