I read about this just recently and evidently it's becoming more common on the US mainland.
I read about the case of a young child in Australia a few years back who became very ill after playing with snails- but not sure if it was rat lungworm disease of not.

Charlotte, you are beautiful from the outside down into the depths of your soul. When I was diagnosed with a non-curable disease that brought on excruciating pain and mental turmoil that will last until I die, I concluded that suicide was my best way out of what I thought was a hopeless condition. One night I picked up my loaded 38-caliber handgun and was going to go outside and end it all. I spent 2 hours writing a suicide note; but by the time I had finished with the note, my overwhelming urge to take my life had subsided. I called the suicide prevention hotline and they arranged for me to spend 9 days in the mental health wing of a VA hospital. I found new hope and strength there. Since my release, I have sought and found continued strength by searching for others who have been through their own crisis and who came through with the strength to carry on. TH-cam has many stories of people who never gave into hopelessness. You may never know how your experience has fueled hope in those struggling to hang onto life. I hope you beat the odds and recover completely.

Parasites are a big problem the AMA refuses to address. I had asthma all my life and was assigned inhalers or anti biotics. Humans can also create conjested heart failure. We know that animals have heart worms, right? They dont want to treat people for parasites. We know that our animals need treatments regularly. Why not people? They dont want people to live longer than 70. Our corporate food supply is slightely poison. It is against the law to kill you, but it is lawful to slowly kill you over a period of time. The VA Clinics dont want to properly identify illnesses or cure us of anything. The best thing we can do for ourselves is to grpund our bodies to the earth. (EARTHING VIDEOS)! THAT WILL CLEAN OUT YOUR BLOOD VIENS. Separates your blood platelets to not stick together. Lowers blood thickness and pressure. Dont drink soda pops or sugar. Honor God and get out of Babylon !

How come there was never any discussion about the long-term symptoms & consequences of Rat Lungworm Disease...We hear about some of the common initial symptoms, & eventual diagnosis..Then what??? That's just the *beginning* & not the end...What can patients expect about the quality of their future lives...How are they suffering & why??? My heart really squeezes with emotion for these individuals & everyone ultimately effected...

    • @ohwiseone7069

poppykok5 I contracted rat-lungworm disease in early 2006 after a trip to the Caribbean. Symptoms developed about a week after I returned to my home in Canada. I was misdiagnosed for about three weeks; the doctors were convinced my headaches were migraines and would send me home with opioids. It was a nightmare. The pain was excruciating and I seriously believed I was dying and at one point I begged to die. I was finally diagnosed with rat-lungworm, and have recovered...not completely, but mostly. I have permanent nerve damage on my left side (side of my face, neck and lower arm), after 12 years, I don’t anticipate the nerves regenerating. Although my cognitive impairments have improved, my working memory has suffered greatly, and it is still often difficult to find words in conversation. It’s like early symptoms of dementia, which is terrifying to me. I guess I am one of the lucky ones, as some of the people in this video are much worse off than I am. The face that this disease has moved into the southern US and moving north is very disconcerting. I hope the scientific/medical community continues to study and learn about this disease to prevent anyone else from contracting rat-lungworm. I hope this info answers some of your questions :-)

Yes, I see the disease is devastating and avoidable, but what I really take away from the experience is their personalities, spirit and resilience. We were one of those families. No confirmed diagnosis but nerve pain, burning skin pain, meningitis - pounding headaches. My 11 year old son was ill for 3 months and in bed for 2 of those months. He was then depressed and was afraid to go outside for fear of dying. Kay was an awesome source of information and support. I was only slightly ill and my boyfriend was in the hospital for 1 week and ill for about 6 weeks. We all are still recovering. We are at about 90-95% healed. Getting our stamina back and still have some sensitive areas on our bodies. I was educated about this disease. I washed my produce and checked each leaf for slim and/or slugs. PREVENTION is the key. I now buy only hydroponic or California greens.

My friend was just released from hospital in Canada with a "lung infection of unknown origin".
It did a number on his diabetes, he should be blind or brain dead from a blood sugar of 66, and he was 113 lbs when he was admitted.
Some of his symptoms were nerve pain in his feet and legs, sudden sickening headaches and a sensation like he was being burned by cigarettes. I'd imagine those might also be diabetes neuropathy pain, but the doctors never figured out what the infection was.

Got tears in my eyes watching this, especially for Graham McCumber who has been hit so hard. Folks so vibrant having been struck so viciously, fortunately it appears that it is possible to regain some of their original vibrancy. I lived in Kihei, Maui back in the late 80s and didn't have to worry about this disease. It is tragic to think that folks living and visiting the islands now have to be extra vigilant about avoiding potential exposure to rat lungworm disease vectors. Thankfully folks like yourselves are spreading the word and informing the public about these dangers to help others avoid befalling such a life shattering disease. Thank you.

I have also never fed my child raw local produce and have no idea how she got it. Doctors sent her out of the hospital both times we had confirmed cases and if we ever have any symptoms anymore they refuse to do any labs to indicate it because of how they are colluding with the DOH to keep confirmed cases down. I'm so upset about the research lab closing here in Hawaii, it seems totally ludacris

To beautiful Charlotte, I am so sorry this has happened to you! I really am!! However Hun with the energy you have left & that beautiful soul you clearly have (as do all of these people afflicted) maybe with your teaching skills? Maybe with this adversity, there might be a way you can spread awareness Hun?? I know this very real documentry opened my eyes........ I think a foundation called 'charlotte's web foundation' might be a calling Hun (just a suggestion) you may not beagle to strike up the strength, however when I saw you I really felt you could be 'that' everlasting face and voice to educate schools, farmers, wherever it may take you..... A big ask, believe me with my story I can say I have an idea on how much of an ask this would be....... Much love to ALL OF YOU to your families, friends to ALL inflicted by this cruel parasite!! My heart goes out to you all and to this amazing, curious & confusing world we live in.... Much light (fee the gal from oz)

Mainstream/traditional western medicine, at its best, does a lot of good. But things like this show up its limitations. It is disappointing how often mainstream medicine is the last, not the first, to recognize new or emergent diseases. In Canada, mainstream medicine denied for years the presence, and even in some cases the reality, of Lyme disease. Now suddenly they are issuing warnings about its presence far into Canadian territory, as though this happened overnight. This is an example of mainstream medicine's sometimes dogmatic, stubbornly lazy thinking, and it must change or we are all at great risk.

I live in puna. This film is very well done visually but I found it frustratingly lacking on actionable information. I still don't understand what the woman in the thumbnail is suffering from and will supposedly be suffering from for the rest of her life? The filmmaker criticizes the lack of information then gives very little information on prevention or treatment; or where to find a trusted up-to-date source of information.

      Hi Dylan,
Charlotte Harris is also suffering from Rat Lungworm disease. Unfortunately, there is no diagnostic tool yet available and certainly a lack of treatment for this parasitic form of meningititis. Creating a discussion is important because many people are suffering with Rat Lungworm, as Charlotte and my father. Research both at UH Manoa and UH Hilo is ongoing, but funding remains a struggle for various reasons - including because this disease is considered to be less significant. I hope my film illustrates that there continues to be a strong need for further research.
With what knowledge we have at this point, being cautious of what we eat (and perhaps drink) remains our best strength. Here is some more information pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu/rlw/

You are misinforming people, All research shows that she should be free of the parasite the sad truth is she is most likely suffering permanent neurological damage, something we are a long ways away from being able to help with medically. The actual parasite has been dead and disintegrated ages ago, she is not living with the parasite actively as the video and you seem to be implying

Hi mntnrder. My intention is not to inform my audience that the parasite still exists within these individuals bodies - I agree with you. The sad truth is that indeed these individuals continue to suffer the lingering sometimes severe damages long after the parasites have died. Mahalo for your time.
